Presidents Message
Hello Houghs Neck and beyond. ChowdaFest is less than a week away.
The 9th annual Chowdafest September 14 will be the biggest event of the
year. We will need lots of volunteers for this event so please contact Helen
Kelly @ [email protected], visit HoughsNeck.org for updates. The Mayor
of Houghs Neck race was a very competitive this year. The four candidates
worked hard on events all summer to raise funds for the Community. I would
love to tell you the winner now but you must attend ChowdaFest to find out.
2‎ 013 Chowdafest logo contest winner is Renee Gaura-VanGestel. Renee’s
art will be featured on the back of the ChowdaFest T-shirts. Thank you to
all the participants. The decision was difficult but only one sketch could be
chosen.
Good Neighbor Banquet will be held on October 20th at 5PM. If you have
a neighbor you feel goes above and beyond being the average neighbor, you
should consider nominating them for Houghs Neck Good Neighbor. Please
see “Good Neighbor” ad for more details.
If you have a love for your community please consider joining the HNCC
board of directors. It is a great opportunity to meet new people, get to know
what is going on in the community and help out the very cause that makes this
a great place to live.

Good Neighbor Banquet Oct. 20th
It’s time to recognize your Good Neighbor. Do you know a member of our
community that goes above and beyond to help out. Someone that mows a
neighbors lawn, shovels the snow or just checks in to make sure all is OK.
Someone that coaches your child’s team and has done so for many years or
coaches different sports? A special leader of your group? Your Best Friend
that not only helps you but others also. There are three categories, Good
Neighbor, Civic Contributions to our community and Outstanding Senior
Citizen, and we can have more then one civic or senior winner. Nominations
are easy, just send a note with an explanation to: Good Neighbor, 367 Billings
Road Wollaston MA 02170 or email [email protected]. Deadline
for nominations is September 15th so think who your Good Neighbor is and
send in your nomination NOW! The Banquet will be held at the St. Thomas
Aquinas Hall on Sunday October 20 at 5PM with a social hour beginning at
4:pm.

Birthdays. Anniversaries.
My favorite flower.
He never forgot anything.
Including making his funeral arrangements ahead of time. I’m thankful
that he took care of the details in advance and saved me the added anxiety
of having to make dozens of decisions at a difficult time. And because he
paid for his services in advance, my family was not left with a financial
burden, but with peace of mind knowing his wishes will be honored.
The professionals of Deware Funeral Home took care of all of the details
and helped us plan a fitting tribute to a life well lived.

JUST BECAUSE
CANCER WALK
On October 5, 2013 we are once
again running the Just Because All
Cancer Walk to benefit victims of
this dreaded disease. This is a 5k
(3.1 miles) walk offering scenic
shoreline views around Hough’s
Neck. The walk will start at 11:00
am from Brill Field with a reception
to include refreshments and raffles at
the Quincy Yacht Club. Please visit
this page often as updates and news
will be posted over the next few
weeks.
This years Cancer walk is being
dedicated to Peggy Morrell &
Bernard E. VanTassell.
We hope to be able to donate a
substantial amount of money to the
Commonwealth Hematology and
Oncology center. This money will
be for the less fortunate “in need”
victims of this disease to help with
related expenses.
Everyone knows of someone who
has suffered from cancer and we
ask all of you to be generous with a
donation, gift certificate or a gift that
can be raffled off. I look forward to
seeing you!
Thank you in advance,
Peggy O’Neil Simone

of the lobster boats for their time and use
of their boats. The funds raised from this
exciting day assist the youth sporting
activities of the Holy Trinity Parish.
Annual Pot-Luck get-together was held
in August and many members attended
with their guests. Our Host & Hostess
did their usual great job and the “When
Pigs Fly Bar and Grill is always a great
place to meet. The fire pit did little to keep
the pestky bugs away, but all had a great
time and the food was wonderful. Thanks
again Tom and Susan.

Houghs Neck Sports
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts
TACKEY CHAN
State Representative ~ 2nd Norfolk District,
I hope you had a safe and fun
Labor Day Weekend. August is
a relative slow month at the State
House, but there is some good
news to share. The Massachusetts
Cultural Council awarded a $25,900
grant to the Quincy Arts Council.
The Quincy Arts Council is located
in at the Quincy Historical Society
on 8 Adams Street and is responsible
to redistributing funding to local
organizations. The Massachusetts
Public Health Association will be
giving Quincy the “Health by Design”
Community Leadership Award for
promoting walking and biking in
the new Quincy Downtown. Given
how busy it had been, I did not get
a chance to share with you the final
destination from my family trip last
November, Macau.
Macau (pronounced Ma-Cow) is
the last stop on the trip. Macau is a
series of four islands and a peninsula
located 37 miles southwest of Hong
Kong. Like Hong Kong, it is a
Special Administrative Region of
the People’s Republic of China.
The government is very similar to
Hong Kong, but less than half the
size. The Portuguese first arrived
in China at Macau in 1513 and
established a trading post by 1535.
After the Opium War (1839 to 1842),
the Portuguese fully controlled
Macau. In 1887, China formally
ceded control of Macau to Portugal.
Starting in the mid-1980’s, China
and Portugal negotiated return of
Macau to China, which happened in
1999. The majority of the 522,000
residents living over 11.5 square
miles are Chinese. The currency is
the Pataca and is tied to the Hong
Kong Dollar.
When I visited Macau in 1990,
it was quiet community that relied
heavily on fishing and a handful of
Houghs Neck Manets
casinos. The Portuguese heavily
influenced Macau’s architecture and
food. The official languages continue
to be Chines and Portuguese. Today,
there are 33 huge casinos with hotels,
massive bridges connecting the
islands and constant construction to
accommodate the millions of people
visiting the island. China, Macau
and Hong Kong are currently in the
process of constructing a land bridge
highway on the water from Hong
Kong to Macau. We stayed at the
Grand Lisboa, next to the original
Lisboa Caisno, the oldest casino
in Asia. We watched the House of
Dancing Water at the City of Dreams
complex owned by the Hyatt
and the Hard Rock Casinos. The
performance involved a stage that
becomes a pool inside of 30 seconds,
video projections, dancing, fighting
and high diving. We were able to
get a local resident, nicknamed PC,
to give us a tour Macau. We visited
a national park dedication to Chinese
achievements, and a children’s park
which had a pair of 3 year old pandas
on loan from China. One of my
biggest thrills is to see live pandas
up close. I had the best Chinese,
Portuguese and Italian meals. The
most popular casino games among
Chinese are baccarat, Dai Siu which
guessing the high low on a three dice
roll, and horse racing. Slot machines
and other Las Vegas casino games
are there but not as popular. And no,
I did not hit it big.
Thank you for allowing me to
share a little bit of my trip with you.
I look forward to see many of you
at Chowderfest when the next Mayor
of Houghs Neck is announced.
Good luck to the candidates and the
chowder applicants.
Sincerely, Tackey

57 Years of the
Houghs Neck Bulletin
Can you believe that this publication,
The Houghs Neck Bulletin, one of
the oldest continuously published
Community Newsletters in the Metro
Boston area a celebrating its 1st issue
of the 57th volume.
Long before I came involved with
the printing of the Bulletin it was
printed on a mimiograph machine
on the basement of one of the board
of directors house. The addresses
were hand printed by volunteers and
delivered by hand.
Three years ago we changed the
look of the Bulletin by converting
to a newspaper style and this has
been well received. Thank you to
all the volunteers over the years
that helped inform out community
through the Bulletin. We hope to
continue that tradition for many more
years. Let us know what you think
