with micro-depressions, abandoned river beds etc).
The formation of the city area actual relief dates from the end of the Pliocene from
the Tertiary era, being tied up to the clog of Panonia Lake. The sand, loess and

Cities twinned with Satu Mare city
Presentation. Common events
Satu Mare is twinned with Wolffenbütel city ( Germany) from 1974, with
Zutphen (Holland) from 1970 and with Nyíregyháza (Hungary) from 2000.
Nyíregyháza- Hungary
The first mentions about Nyiregyháza city date from 1209.
The most eastern of the big Hungarian cities, this one already has over
115.000 inhabitants, being situated on the seventh place, after the
number of inhabitants. The municipal can be proud with a large offer
of cultural and sportive institutions, the Village Museum, The Zoo,
Sóstó baths and with a fruitful and high level artistic life. The economic, cultural and
demographic development of the city is continuous since 1960.
The industrialization processes was started, and the number of inhabitants raised,
the dwellings build-ups raised. Nyiregyháza became an educational center, a
collegiate city, though, the collegiate education was founded, in domains as theology,
religion, economy, medicine.
Wolfenbüttel – Germany
Wolfenbüttel, city that developed around a fortress, documented already from
1118, becoming between 1432-1754 the residence of the Braunschweig-Lüneburg
dukes. It is situated in the Inferior Saxon Land (Niedersachsen) at 52° 09´ 47´´
North latitude and 10° 32´ 19´´ longitude from Greenwich. The city is placed in the
old valley of Ocker river, at an altitude from 134 to 74 meters over the sea level. The
territory of the city sums 1.446,64 ha, and together with the 10 suburban
incorporated localities 7.845,57 ha. In 2002, the locality sums 54.635 inhabitants,
from which 3.303 foreign citizens. The modern city from today has an agitated
history, having for three centuries (1432-1754) the role of an important political and

founded here the first German theatre with a stabile troupe, and from 1572 the duke
founded the first rare books collection, the future Duke August Library, famous in
the whole wide world. In 1838 the first state train from Germany was given to
circulation, on the line between Braunschweig and Wolfenbüttel. In 1609 appeared
“Aviso” the first newspaper in German.
During centuries, around the castle from the old city centre
has developed a renascent city of a beauty that is
appreciated by the tourists even today. The city is proud of
almost 600 buildings constructed between the XVI-th and
the XVIII-th century from beams and half –timber/brick –
most of them restaurants. From 1602, in one of these
historical buildings is the City Hall Headquarters, in a
square in which from 1570 is hold the weekly fair. Nearby,
there is the imposing cathedral, Beatae Mariae Virgins, built-up between 1608-1643,
the first church building that is important to the German Protestantism, decorated
on the exterior with no less than 800 sculptural decorations.
Other important points of the city are: The Castle, renovated several times, which
shelters a remarkable museum, protocol rooms of the City Hall, and a High School
also, Lessing House, where the great culture man Lessing, has lived and created (he
wrote here his opera “Natan the wise” <<Natan înţeleptul>>), the Arsenal, today a
part of Duke August Library, Trinitatis Church, “The Small Venice” (“Mica
Veneţie”) neighbourhood, the baroque suburb Auguststadt with its romantic lanes.
The most known enterprises from Wolfenbüttel are Jägermeister Company, the
producer of the well-known plants liqueur, MKN firm, which produces large
capacity kitchens, Welger technical – agricultural enterprise, as well as an enterprise
that produces herbicides and fungicides. A large number of inhabitants work at
Volkswagen vehicles factories from Wolfsburg, a city that is situated nearby.
A century ago, Wolfenbüttel was still considered a gardeners city, because of the
numerous vegetables gardens on the out-skirts of the city. Today, only the small
associations “The little gardeners” (“Micii grădinari”) have survived, and they try to
hold on to the traditions of this profession. The gardens were replaced with modern
dwelling assemblies.
We have to remark that in the city activate 47 sports associations with 17.732
members, which means 32,5 % of the population.
The fraternity between Satu Mare and Wolfenbüttel was born after the catastrophic
floods from 14th of May 1970, when this German city helped the disaster victims
from Satu Mare, sending urgently more transports with blankets, textiles, shoes,
food and medicine and other goods too.
As a result of this humanitarian action, which continued in the following years, the

Fraternity Protocol was signed in the Spring of 1974 (31 May 1974) by the mayor
Friedrich Ehrhoff, and his colleague, his homologue from Satu Mare, Vasile Gîta
together with the secretaries of the two cities Wolfgang Wessel and dr. Iuliu Luţaş, at
the time being the first of a kind between a RFG city and a Romanian one.
This partnership developed over the 30 years of official delegations exchange, at the
friendly relations between a high number of citizens belonging to the most diverse
categories: pupils, medical cadres, cultural and arts men, didactic personnel,
administrative functionaries, leaders of some enterprises, members of ONG,
members of sports associations, artistic assemblies and usual citizens. The list of the
common projects realized during these years, but also after 1989, is so ample, that
cannot be presented in this restricted area.
The mayor of Wolfenbüttel city is, from 1996, Mr. Axel Gummert, who together
with the vice-mayor Manfred Ammon, was distinguished with the title of Honour
Citizen of Satu Mare Municipal, for the special merits within the development of the
partnership between the two cities.
Wolfenbüttel is also twinned with the cities Sèvres (France), Kenosha (U.S.A.),
Kamiena Gora (Poland).
Zutphen – Holland
Zutphen city, having a population of almost 32.000 inhabitants is not
a big city. Although, besides its gorgeous landscape, it has a unique
attraction point. A walk on the banks of Ijssel offers multiple
possibilities to enjoy the relaxing beauties of this river. The arts and
history passionate are fully satisfied by the two museums. The
Municipal Museum, with its artifacts and Henriette Polak Museum with its modern
art collection. Taking a tour of the old city, you can find an ample variety of
historical buildings. The beautiful library of fastened manuscripts is unique in
Librije, a well-known library, dating from the XVI-th century, build-up on the
Walburg Church’s structure.
The municipal authorities try to make the inhabitants’ life as pleasant as they can.
The city invests in its future, and there are not only urban plans for dwellings but
also plans to create new industrial areas.
From Martinetsingel, you can admire the aspect of the city from the beginning of
the Middle Ages. The old fence of the city is kept in all its beauty, and behind it
there are the picturesquely roofs of the old houses. You can also find here
Drogenaps Tour, dating from 1446. Another captivating objective, witness of the
glorious past, is Berkel ruin from Hagepoort Square.
Because of its importance as a regional centre, Zutphen has a great variety of

specialized stores. The city is famous for its markets, with program on

possibilities to make sport and the water sports are also available. A
day in Zutphen can be closed with a visit at the theatre, cinema or one
of the numerous restaurants and cafés. There are also multiple
educational possibilities. The city is proud with its regional
institutions, as the Commerce Chamber, the Consumer’s Protection
Service, and the Work Forces. More, Zutphen is a district
jurisdictional centre.
Zutphen is situated between Ijssen River and Twente Channel. Berkel River crosses
the centre of the city. This is not a coincidence, because in the past,
water was essential for commerce. Various regions having a special
natural beauty, historical and cultural value, as Akhterhoek, Twente,
Overijssel, Range, Salland, and Weluwe, surround Zutphen. The city is
easily accessible, taking benefit by important connections (roads,
railways and navigable ways), which constitutes a motive to visit this beautiful city.
The manifestations and meetings organized within this twin hood
partnerships are: cultural manifestations, infoldments of socio-economical
development projects by both sides, these ones unrolling on all the years of
