Honoring Jim Elliott
In 1996 Jim Elliott decided to leave a successful career in the media to become a full-time volunteer. In 2001 he founded the
Diveheart Foundation, a volunteer-driven, not-for-profit organization that helps build confidence and independence in children,
adults, and veterans with disabilities through adaptive SCUBA diving and snorkeling. Diveheart works with individuals who
have any type of disability, including developmental disabilities, vision and hearing impairment, paraplegia, quadriplegia, and
amputation. Elliott’s goal is to have more people with disabilities experience the therapeutic value of the underwater
environment through collaboration with hospitals, rehabilitation centers, veterans’ organizations, and volunteers. He is
currently planning a world headquarters for Diveheart, which will feature a dive training facility. Through his work, people
with disabilities all over the world are experiencing freedom underwater.
