Realizing that these events have become commonplace has me wondering when and how “the golf outing” originated. The Golf Guide’s crack staff investigated deep into the golf history archives, but even with our best efforts, we drew a total whiff on the first tee. Using a mulligan here, we’ve concluded that charity golf outings spawn from ProAms that are still played today. More than 1,000,000 golf events take place in this country each year with the average golf tournament in the U.S. raising about $5,000. In the scramble, the format most often used at a charity golf outings, players decide which teammate’s tee shot best begins each hole. Each player then plays his second shot from within a club length of where that best ball came to rest, and the procedure repeats until finishing the hole. I have seen some golfers abuse the club length rule, and around our neck of the woods, we call those players cheaters. In a “champagne scramble,” another recently well-received scramble format, each team member tees off on each hole. All players move their own ball to the resulting best drive and play their ball in from there. An individual best score or a multiple player score counts. Both tournament systems normally begin with a shotgun start and hopefully speed up play, but for some reason when I play, I always run into a backup on the Bay Bridge. On that rare occasion, a best ball format may be used, even though that format is normally reserved for clubs’ member events. Group outings serve first and foremost as a major form of fundraising each year for many organizations. Anything from a major charity to a local needy family can benefit. Some additional forms of fundraising also occur at these tournaments. I normally buy mulligans, maybe get in a skins pool or putting contest, or just purchase some 50/50 raffle tickets because at some of these events, that booty can add up to a pretty lucrative payday! All of these tactics along with hole and tee sponsorships boost the cash to grow the overall donation. Don’t forget that at most of these events a new car or maybe even cash are up for grabs on a designated par 3 for someone lucky enough to make a hole-in-one. My good friend Glenn Murphy of Opequon Motors in Martinsburg, WV, has been sponsoring hole-in-one prizes for years and has given away seven vehicles for aces at events. Golf outings are always a fun and social part of golf season. If you are a group looking to raise some money, put one together. It won’t be a difficult task as long as you have plenty of volunteers and the golf course head pro leads you in the right direction to make your event one that could possibly generate funds for your charity for years to come. 2 G O L FG U I D E I N C. CO M SPRI N G 2 0 1 5 3 Cover Story Cover Story Lakeview Golf Club ~ All The Right Moves Nick Ciattei Spring Hole 7 Par 4 I made a very wise and right decision when I moved to the Shenandoah Valley back in the late 1970s. Sure, every now and then I miss my hometown, especially the crab cakes, but I do not regret making this beautiful part of the country my home for the better part of the last 35 years. I have also been pleasantly surprised that I have been able to continue my love for the game of golf in this region with quite an array of fine courses within 45 minutes of my front door. This valley so rich in history has seen quite a lot of growth since I sprouted roots here. The city and suburbs of the Harrisonburg, VA, region have exploded with James Madison College jumping to the university ranks and Spring Hole 9 Par 5 with the building booms of the 80s and 90s. In keeping up with the Jones’s per se, Lakeview Golf Club also saw the need to expand during these times and moved forward with a fourth nine being added to their existing 27 holes. They also redesigned the original nine holes. Without a doubt I have never played a more unique 36-hole facility than Lakeview with its four different nine-hole segments built by four different architects at four different times. Not many courses can include these incredibly rare facts on their resume. golf hole as you can play. The Spring Nine wraps up with one of the more memorable holes at Lakeview. The 512-yard dogleg left par 5 plays from an elevated tee that dramatically tumbles down to the fairway below, which is infiltrated by a ball-flogging creek. From there, travel basically straight uphill to a small green that slopes sharply from back to front. Peak Hole 4 Par 3 The Peak Nine puts forth some of the tightest driving holes at Lakeview and yet balances them very nicely with generous greens and approaches. Peak opens with three consecutive par 4s. The first two dogleg gently left, while the lovely downhill third plays shorter than advertised. Good scores on these starting holes will help your total Peak Hole 9 Par 5 because this nine gets progressively harder as it goes on. The par 3 fourth, the poster child hole for the Peak, features a 50-foot drop from tee to green. The par 5s range from the interesting, uphill fifth that is only 440 yards from the whites to the more conventional three-shot closer that plays to a well bunkered green. Most consider the Lake Nine the easiest of the four, but several ponds and a spring-fed creek will keep you thinking throughout play. Big hitters aren’t the only ones to easily reach the greens on the par 5 second and fifth holes. A right to left shot off the tee on the second hole provides your optimal chance at glory, but any Throughout the years, each nine has been partnered with another. Head Professional Mike Gooden feels the current rotation gives players equal part challenge and variety. Russ Roberts designed the original course, the Spring Nine, that opened at Lakeview in 1963. Ault, Clark and Associates completely redesigned it in 1987. Its winding spring-fed creek and several doglegs pair well with the Peak Nine’s tree lined fairways that require more precision off the tee on the Buddy Loving designed nine that opened in 1976. The Lake Nine, another nine designed by Roberts, debuted in 1967 and incorporates more water for the golfer to negotiate around and over. The Mountain Nine, with Virginia resident Lester George taking the creating credits, was unveiled in 2001 and pairs its incredible views with the Peak’s to form another great combination. Given the current setup at Lakeview Golf Club, let’s highlight some of the signature holes to play on your shuttle across this very diverse landscape. The most difficult hole on the Spring Nine, the fourth, presents a long par 4 that plays through a beautiful wooded section. The eighth may be this writer’s favorite on this loop. A short par 4 cascades downhill and to the right and offers as natural a 4 G O L FG U I D E I N C. CO M SPRI N G 2 0 1 5 Lake Hole 9 Par 4 5 Cover Story miss-fired second shots will most likely meet a watery grave in a pond short of the green. The latter par 5 plays over 75 feet downhill to an ample landing area. Sand traps protect the small putting surface, but even this writer has reached its green in two! The Lake Nine wraps up with a terrific par 4 that plays uphill to a green handsomely decorated by a bulk-headed pond. Lake Hole 5 Par 5 The Mountain Nine opens rather timidly with an easy par 4, but the second hole is anything but. Also a par 4, it can stretch to 490 yards from the back tees. Raw beauty and dramatic bunkering punctuate the sweeping par 5 third. Playing in an open section of the property with a delightful view of the Massanutten Mountain Hole 3 Par 5 Peak in the background, both the par 3 fourth’s and par 4 fifth’s lakes become formidable obstacles to your game. The seventh’s unique split fairway makes golfers decide whether to take the more easily accessible high road or the more direct low side. The par 4 ninth can be played several different ways from the tee, but that does not change your approach from a fairway that is some 50 feet above the green. Mountain Hole 5 Par 4 Lakeview hosts several large tournaments each year and has always been recognized for its superb conditioning and outstanding value. Playability and a well-maintained rolling landscape offer just a couple of explanations for Lakeview Golf Club being regarded as one of the best 36-hole facilities in the Commonwealth. Locally, the club has captured the “Best in the Valley” title for golf by readers of the Daily News-Record. The club maintains a solid membership while still being able to court daily fee players. The service-friendly atmosphere and professional staff foster enjoyment of the game at any level. Lakeview has an outstanding practice complex for long game, short game, and putting practice. The club continues to make improvements to their website and on-line reservation feature. These smart decisions please today’s technology driven consumer who demands information faster and more conveniently. Lakeview Golf Club in Harrisonburg provides exceptional golf while making all the right moves. For more information visit lakeviewgolf.net 6 G O L FG U I D E I N C. Arkansas offers 52 state parks but only a couple of them have golf courses: DeGray Lake Resort State Park and Village Creek State Park. Additional picturesque golf is available when you follow the Natural State Golf Trail. Created to showcase the scenic courses that dot the state, the Golf Trail allows you to play through rolling hills, hardwood forests, towering pines, grand prairies, fertile deltas, and alongside tranquil rivers, crisp mountain lakes, and pristine streams. Since the Golf Trail’s 12 courses are spread throughout the state at 11 unique locations, you will find ample opportunities to enjoy the scenic countryside while traveling among them. Part of my adventure brought me to the eastern part of Arkansas called The Delta. A unique geological formation called Crowley’s Ridge rises several hundred feet above The Delta’s flat plain. My first stop at Village Creek State Park, Arkansas’s second largest state park in land area, spreads over 6,900 acres with 96 campsites. Nestled The Ridges at Village Creek on a nearby ridge are the park’s ten fullyequipped cabins that feature kitchens and wood-burning fireplaces. This park has one of the more exciting 27-hole golf layouts I have ever seen at The Ridges at Village Creek Golf Course. This public course features the rolling terrain of Crowley’s Ridge, dramatic elevation changes, and the backdrop of the surrounding hardwood forest’s seasonal beauty. Depending on which configuration of the two nines you choose to play, the yardage can stretch to more than 7400 yards. Water comes into play on 12 of the holes. Do yourself a favor and stay overnight in one of the cabins so you can play this course a couple of times. These three distinct nines offer outstanding golf and fun challenges. This course is a real diamond in the rough and well worth the drive to get there! Village Creek State Park lies two hours east of Little Rock, Arkansas, or one hour west of Memphis, Tennessee. Sage Meadows 8 as well as enjoyable recreational rounds. Holes of notable mention include the second with a waterfall dedicated to the memory of the late Rachel Stewart, the sixth with a tight tee shot between water on the left and trees on the right, the signature ninth with a beautiful but treacherous water hazard from tee to green, and the fourteenth that can rank among the toughest on the course if not played properly. Part of the Natural State Golf Trail, the course hosts several regional tournaments, and the Arkansas State University men’s and women’s golf teams also call the course home. While in Jonesboro, I recommend going downtown to dine at Skinny J’s. They specialize in steaks, burgers, and interesting sandwich combos. They also have live music several nights a week. Further east, almost to the Mississippi River, I reached Blytheville where Thunder Bayou Golf Course, also part of the Natural State Golf Trail, resides. The real star of the show, their 18-hole links-style layout, presents more than 80 bunkers and water that comes into play on seven holes. Experienced players can be challenged and casual golfers can select the most appropriate tees for their skill level and still enjoy the gorgeous landscapes. Play at Thunder Bayou spans more than 7000 unforgettable yards of rolling fairways, strategically placed hazards, and fast greens. Although hole three is considered their signature hole, I found all of the holes exciting. Back in central Arkansas at Heber Springs on a peninsula of Greers Ferry Lake, the quaint Red Apple Inn and Country Club sits. The Inn was founded over 40 years ago with a vision of gracious country living that remains through today. Upgraded in part, they have kept the natural wood look, native stone, and lush plantings to create a quiet elegance to enhance relaxation. The dining room is situated for panoramic views of the lake, the landscaped patio, or the pleasantly shaded breezeway. They are proud to say that “fine dining and attentive service come with the view.” More active guests can North to Jonesboro I proceeded to Sage Meadows Golf Course, a modern links inspired, Tommy Bolt signature course that is fair yet challenging to golfers of all ages and skills. The semi-private course has a great practice facility and a very nice clubhouse with restaurant. I liked getting to play on the zoysia grass fairways and lush bentgrass greens. With water on nine of the holes, Sage Meadows offers great tournament play G O L FG U I D E I N C. CO M Thunder Bayou SPRI N G 2 0 1 5 9 Golf Destination enjoy the golf course, tennis courts, a fitness center, lake, and forest trails. The Inn’s 18-hole championship golf course differs a little from than those mentioned above. The original nine holes were built in 1969, but when the second nine holes were added in 1979, they became holes one through nine. The tree-lined, narrow fairways meandering through the front nine are tempered a bit by the back nine’s more forgiving, flatter fairways even though some large trees still thrive. Hole number two was once voted the most scenic hole in Arkansas, and I could see why. This delightful par-3 features about a 100-foot drop and a splendid Red Apple backdrop of trees. The mature course still maintains traditional small green complexes that can make for some interesting second shots! Before leaving the golf shop, be sure to pick up some of the Southern Pecan Toffee. I have never had better toffee. The last stop before heading to the airport lies just north of the Red Apple Inn in the town of Mountain View. Not only will the drive be pretty, but the family can take the opportunity to have some old-fashioned fun at the Ozark Folk Center State Park. A trip here by itself provides enough of a reason to visit this part of Arkansas. Arkansas’s unique park is considered to be “A Wonderful Way to Enjoy Yesterday” and America’s only facility that works at preserving the Ozark heritage and sharing it in an entertaining way. “We keep the crafts, music, and herblore of the Ozarks alive.” They offer more than 18 pioneering skills and crafts including candles, soap, brooms, fiddles, and blacksmithing. And then there is the music! I listened for over an hour to a group of three called “Whoa Mule” who played a fiddle, guitar, and bass and shared music from the 1820s to 1940s. The center also offers hands-on classes in different skills and has a restaurant and cabins so you can enjoy it even more. A full calendar of events is planned for the 2015 season. Whether you seek to challenge your skills at a championship golf course or just play for the pure joy, very enjoyable golf awaits you naturally in Arkansas. Bowling Green North and South, two of the best the Shenandoah Valley has to offer, is located between Winchester and Front Royal, off Route 522. Wingfield Golf Properties now manages the courses. One of the Mid-Atlantic’s most popular golf destinations each year is the scenic Cacapon Resort State Park. This challenging championship golf venue is set in the rolling foothills of the 2,300 foot Cacapon Mountain and is the centerpiece of the 6,000 acre park near Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. Designed by famous golf course designer Robert Trent Jones, Sr., the layout makes prime use of the rolling hills at the base of the ridge. Yes, you might take on an opponent as in other sports, but the actual battle pits the golfer against the course rather than their opponent. In the mid-Atlantic, several courses bring thoughts of combat by the mere mention of their name, and The Gauntlet Golf Club in Fredericksburg is one of those battlefields. Hole 2 Par 5 The name “Gauntlet” itself needs examining. In medieval times knights wore a glove or mitten, made of mail or plate, called a gauntlet, and architect, PB Dye, known for designing challenging and creative golf courses, has forged a striking fortress for golf on the shores of Curtis Lake. The Gauntlet incorporates some target Hole 4 Par 4 golf philosophy, undulating bentgrass green complexes, and unique design features. Dye moved a lot of earth with towering, sculptured bunkers and modern mounding prevalent throughout the layout. Four sets of tees provide a comfortable range from the red tees at just less than 5000 yards to 6900 from the tips. Three of the first five holes play along and sometimes over the lake. Curtis Lake runs down the entire left side of the 493-yard par 5 second hole with a wetland area crossing the fairway just inside 150 yards. The layup area over the marsh appears smaller from the fairway than its actual size. Pinpoint accuracy yields a bonus on this breathtaking hole where the green resides on a peninsula. More shoreline adventure awaits on the par 4 fourth. A sharp dogleg left around the lake beckons big hitters to cut the corner. Even those who play it safe need to negotiate several gaping bunkers and a “Dye”-abolical three-tiered green. Take a deep breath because you are almost through the toughest stretch of holes at The Gauntlet. The par 5 fifth, a natural three-shot hole, plays with water to your left off the tee. A second shot must carry a finger of the lake that crosses the fairway. From there, travel uphill to a large, well-protected green. After the par 3 sixth, a trio of par 4s close out the front nine. The par 4 eighth, which is almost as long as a couple of the par 5s at 470 yards, plays downhill after the drive, as does number nine. leads the way to the par 5 thirteenth, the longest hole on the course. The last par 3, fifteen, spans well over 200 yards. Three here is gold. While holes eleven through fifteen offer a links feel, the three closing par 4s play through a wooded parkland setting. Seventeen’s dogleg left demands an uphill second shot that ends on The Gauntlet’s most intimidating green armed with deep bunkers. You’ll be wise to take an extra club on your approach to the beautiful uphill par 4 eighteenth. Hole 17 Par 4 The comprehensive practice facility at The Gauntlet includes about 20 tee stations and several target areas on the range. The facility also includes a practice bunker and chipping area. The full service terrace clubhouse’s veranda overlooks the eighteenth green and makes an ideal late afternoon campground to settle bets, bandage any wounds, and discuss tactics for ye next war game endeavors at The Gauntlet. The inward nine at The Gauntlet starts with a straight, up-the-tree-chute par 5 that plays longer than suggested. Bunkers border the fairway as well as front the putting surface. By contrast, distance wins over accuracy on the par 4 eleventh where all the trouble looms to the right. The par 3 twelfth, the shortest hole, For more information visit golfgauntlet.com 34 G O L FG U I D E I N C. Penn National Golf Club & Inn in Mont Alto, PA, is one of the most popular and successful 36hole golf operations in the entire midAtlantic region. Two award winning 18-hole golf courses and comfortable lodging entertain golfers for an entire day or several days. A short road trip from the Washington and Baltimore Founders Hole 8 Par 4 metropolises can have you swinging the club on both the Founders Course and the Iron Forge Course in the same day. Travelers from outside the area vacation at Penn National for several days each year as they sojourn to this South Central Pennsylvania golf landmark for the perfect stay and play package. The Founders Course, the work of long time popular Northeast golf architect Ed Ault, plays 5360 yards from the forward tees and presents a real challenge for the ladies. Measuring a chip shot under 7000 yards from the tips, even the best players enjoy tackling its expansive girth. The great par 4 starting hole plays from an elevated tee to a green set against a Founders Hole 16 & 17 Par 4 & 3 large lake that is the focal point of some of the key holes. The first par 5, the second, stretches around the corner of a water hazard and offers a realistic birdie opportunity if you can keep it in the short grass. The par 4 eighth is rated the hardest hole while the ninth boasts being the longest par 3 on the front side. I’d choose the inward nine as one of my favorites in the mid-Atlantic with its solid test of golf from start to finish. Many golfers remember The Founders Course for its three pretty darn good closing holes. The most identifiable holes on the course, the sixteenth and seventeenth, par 4 and 3 respectively, play around and over the aforementioned lake. Iron Forge Hole 4 Par 4 make this course a driver’s paradise. The par 3 sixth hole plays over water to a green fortressed by a stone wall. A rustic, towering silo, remnants of the old farmland, stay intact as a backdrop to Iron Forge’s signature par 5 eleventh. Golfweek has released its highly anticipated “Best Courses Issue.” This special edition unveils the complete rankings of Golfweek’s best classic, modern, and state-by-state courses, which together illustrate how public layouts continue to rise through the ranks of the game’s greatest tracts. To produce Golfweek’s “Best Courses” lists, an expert team of more than 725 course raters used a 10-point ranking system to identify the best layouts from two distinctly different eras: pre1960 and 1960-present. The exclusive system recognizes that before 1960 – the year that separates classic from modern – most course designers relied on native contours for course features. Since 1960, as the game became more popular, designers began to utilize high-tech engineering and advanced mechanical means to transform the landscape to suit their designs. In Maryland, three of The Golf Guide’s feature courses have been recognized while one in Virginia also made the grade. Bottlepops, a sports-themed bottle opener, adds the twist (no pun intended) of making fun sounds when you use them to take the top off of that cold one whether it be a beer or soda. In fact with BottlePops, you do not even need to twist. Simply place it over the bottle cap and pull and an entertaining sound clip specific to the featured sport plays. Most of you will probably choose the golf ball Bottlepop, but you can select from many other sports including baseball, football, basketball, soccer, and auto racing. Designed to look and feel just like the actual ball with 15-25 fun sound bites, you will never get bored with this feature. It would make a great Father’s Day gift. Pop a Top! We have reviewed the Leupold brand several times, and once again we proclaim the new GX®-1i2 rangefinder a winner. We have raved about the compact look and feel of Leupold’s selections in the past, but recent technical advancements including their Prism LockTM feature brings accuracy and individuality to a new level. This latest installment from Leupold changes the spectrum when it comes to rangefinders. You can customize it to fit your needs while on the course. As is the case with many soldiers who participate in SMGA or other golf programs dedicated to helping our soldiers, Brian credits the game of golf as a big part of his recovery. “I know golf is a healer because the world was too busy when I came back and was injured. Expires 7-30-15 Larry Ringer, PGA Teaching Professional MAPGA Hall of Fame Musket Ridge Golf Club, Myersville, Maryland With spring finally here we are ready to begin our annual quest toward breaking par! Unfortunately, we did nothing over the winter months to help us get ready for that challenge. Oh yes! We had high hopes and a great plan to work out three times a week and find the time to practice our putting in the family room by making those five footers into an empty water glass. But, those family obligations, those weekends doing chores inside the house, and the fact that it really felt good to sleep later than usual kept us from working on those goals. Now, what do we do? Do we go through another season of struggling to get that feeling back in our swing and that touch back on the greens? Or, do we actually take the time and set aside a few dollars to take a series of lessons from the local PGA professional? Do we actually think that lessons will improve our game or will it just mess up what has felt comfortable over the last few seasons? Well, as a PGA professional who has taught thousands of students over the last 35 years, the best medicine for improving your game in the spring is to find the time and get a series of golf lessons! Without a doubt it will provide you with a solid foundation towards getting the clubface on the ball and giving you a blueprint for the overall improvement to your golf game. Most of the students who come to me in the spring want to hit the ball more solidly, be more consistent, and drive the ball longer. What I try to teach early in each season is getting the student to develop a more consistent position and feel at impact. In fact, if you are asked what position is the most important in golf, you should know the answer is the impact position. Keeping that in mind, I try to work with my students on the short game before any efforts are made to hit it farther. Developing a team concept (teacher and student) will enhance your enjoyment for the game and long-range plans for improvement will come into focus sooner. If you are planning to spend some time on your golf game this year, then it should be with a plan and some goals. Making yourself a plan with a PGA professional will only enhance your practice sessions and make them more efficient by working on certain goals. So, before you go out and get frustrated with your game this spring, make the effort to contact your local PGA professional and set up a series of lessons. Remember, this game is way too hard to master by yourself. Get some quality instruction and make sure you work at the plan your teacher sets up for you. I assure you that your game will improve, you will begin to enjoy the game even more, and more importantly, you will start to lower your golf scores. If you need help contacting a PGA Professional near you, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or call me at 304-279-7524. Good luck and good golfing in 2015! SPRI N G 2 0 1 5 61
