The Golf Outing
Since taking up the game I have probably played more
than 200 charity golf outings (which I normally attend
just for the food). Realizing that these events have
become commonplace has me wondering when and
how “the golf outing” originated. The Golf Guide’s crack
staff investigated deep into the golf history archives,
but even with our best efforts, we drew a total
whiff on the first tee. Using a mulligan here, we’ve
concluded that charity golf outings spawn from ProAms that are still played today. More than 1,000,000
golf events take place in this country each year with
the average golf tournament in the U.S. raising about
$5,000.
In the scramble, the format most often used at a
charity golf outings, players decide which teammate’s
tee shot best begins each hole. Each player then plays
his second shot from within a club length of where
that best ball came to rest, and the procedure repeats
until finishing the hole. I have seen some golfers abuse the club length rule, and
around our neck of the woods, we call those players cheaters. In a “champagne
scramble,” another recently well-received scramble format, each team member
tees off on each hole. All players move their own ball to the resulting best drive
and play their ball in from there. An individual best score or a multiple player
score counts. Both tournament systems normally begin with a shotgun start and
hopefully speed up play, but for some reason when I play, I always run into a
backup on the Bay Bridge. On that rare occasion, a best ball format may be used,
even though that format is normally reserved for clubs’ member events.
Group outings serve first and foremost as a major form of fundraising each year
for many organizations. Anything from a major charity to a local needy family can
benefit. Some additional forms of fundraising also occur at these tournaments.
I normally buy mulligans, maybe get in a skins pool or putting contest, or just
purchase some 50/50 raffle tickets because at some of these events, that booty can
add up to a pretty lucrative payday! All of these tactics along with hole and tee
sponsorships boost the cash to grow the overall donation.
Don’t forget that at most of these events a new car or maybe even cash are up
for grabs on a designated par 3 for someone lucky enough to make a hole-in-one.
My good friend Glenn Murphy of Opequon Motors in Martinsburg, WV, has been
sponsoring hole-in-one prizes for years and has given away seven vehicles for aces
at events.
Golf outings are always a fun and social part of golf season. If you are a group
looking to raise some money, put one together. It won’t be a difficult task as long
as you have plenty of volunteers and the golf course head pro leads you in the
right direction to make your event one that could possibly generate funds for your
charity for years to come.

Lakeview Golf Club ~ All The Right Moves
Nick Ciattei
Spring Hole 7 Par 4
I made a very wise and right decision
when I moved to the Shenandoah
Valley back in the late 1970s. Sure,
every now and then I miss my
hometown, especially the crab cakes,
but I do not regret making this
beautiful part of the country my home
for the better part of the last 35 years. I
have also been pleasantly surprised that
I have been able to continue my love
for the game of golf in this region with
quite an array of fine courses within 45
minutes of my front door.
This valley so rich in history has seen
quite a lot of growth since I sprouted
roots here. The city and suburbs of
the Harrisonburg, VA, region have
exploded with James Madison College
jumping to the university ranks and

with the building booms of the 80s and
90s. In keeping up with the Jones’s
per se, Lakeview Golf Club also saw the need to expand during these times and
moved forward with a fourth nine being added to their existing 27 holes. They also
redesigned the original nine holes. Without a doubt I have never played a more
unique 36-hole facility than Lakeview with its four different nine-hole segments
built by four different architects at four different times. Not many courses can
include these incredibly rare facts on their resume.
golf hole as you can play. The Spring
Nine wraps up with one of the more
memorable holes at Lakeview. The
512-yard dogleg left par 5 plays from an
elevated tee that dramatically tumbles
down to the fairway below, which is
infiltrated by a ball-flogging creek. From
there, travel basically straight uphill to
a small green that slopes sharply from
back to front.
Peak Hole 4 Par 3
The Peak Nine puts forth some of the
tightest driving holes at Lakeview and
yet balances them very nicely with
generous greens and approaches. Peak
opens with three consecutive par 4s.
The first two dogleg gently left, while
the lovely downhill third plays shorter
than advertised. Good scores on these
starting holes will help your total
Peak Hole 9 Par 5
because this nine gets progressively
harder as it goes on. The par 3 fourth,
the poster child hole for the Peak, features a 50-foot drop from tee to green.
The par 5s range from the interesting, uphill fifth that is only 440 yards from the
whites to the more conventional three-shot closer that plays to a well bunkered
green.
Most consider the Lake Nine the easiest of the four, but several ponds and a
spring-fed creek will keep you thinking throughout play. Big hitters aren’t the only
ones to easily reach the greens on the par 5 second and fifth holes. A right to left
shot off the tee on the second hole provides your optimal chance at glory, but any
Throughout the years, each nine has been partnered with another. Head
Professional Mike Gooden feels the current rotation gives players equal part
challenge and variety. Russ Roberts designed the original course, the Spring
Nine, that opened at Lakeview in 1963. Ault, Clark and Associates completely
redesigned it in 1987. Its winding spring-fed creek and several doglegs pair well
with the Peak Nine’s tree lined fairways that require more precision off the tee on
the Buddy Loving designed nine that opened in 1976. The Lake Nine, another
nine designed by Roberts, debuted in 1967 and incorporates more water for the
golfer to negotiate around and over. The Mountain Nine, with Virginia resident
Lester George taking the creating credits, was unveiled in 2001 and pairs its
incredible views with the Peak’s to form another great combination.
Given the current setup at Lakeview Golf Club, let’s highlight some of the
signature holes to play on your shuttle across this very diverse landscape. The
most difficult hole on the Spring Nine, the fourth, presents a long par 4 that plays
through a beautiful wooded section. The eighth may be this writer’s favorite on
this loop. A short par 4 cascades downhill and to the right and offers as natural a

miss-fired second shots will most likely
meet a watery grave in a pond short of
the green. The latter par 5 plays over 75
feet downhill to an ample landing area.
Sand traps protect the small putting
surface, but even this writer has reached
its green in two! The Lake Nine wraps
up with a terrific par 4 that plays uphill
to a green handsomely decorated by a
bulk-headed pond.
Lake Hole 5 Par 5
The Mountain Nine opens rather
timidly with an easy par 4, but the
second hole is anything but. Also
a par 4, it can stretch to 490 yards
from the back tees. Raw beauty and
dramatic bunkering punctuate the
sweeping par 5 third. Playing in an
open section of the property with a
delightful view of the Massanutten
Mountain Hole 3 Par 5
Peak in the background, both the
par 3 fourth’s and par 4 fifth’s lakes
become formidable obstacles to
your game. The seventh’s unique
split fairway makes golfers decide
whether to take the more easily
accessible high road or the more
direct low side. The par 4 ninth can
be played several different ways from
the tee, but that does not change
your approach from a fairway that is
some 50 feet above the green.
Mountain Hole 5 Par 4
Lakeview hosts several large tournaments each year and has always been
recognized for its superb conditioning and outstanding value. Playability and
a well-maintained rolling landscape offer just a couple of explanations for
Lakeview Golf Club being regarded as one of the best 36-hole facilities in the
Commonwealth. Locally, the club has captured the “Best in the Valley” title for
golf by readers of the Daily News-Record. The club maintains a solid membership
while still being able to court daily fee players. The service-friendly atmosphere
and professional staff foster enjoyment of the game at any level. Lakeview has an
outstanding practice complex for long game, short game, and putting practice. The
club continues to make improvements to their website and on-line reservation
feature. These smart decisions please today’s technology driven consumer who
demands information faster and more conveniently. Lakeview Golf Club in
Harrisonburg provides exceptional golf while making all the right moves.

Arkansas Delta Golf ~ Au Natural
Wes Bolyard
Arkansas is nicknamed “The Natural State” for its natural scenic beauty, clear
lakes and streams, and abundant wildlife. Arkansas offers 52 state parks but only
a couple of them have golf courses: DeGray Lake Resort State Park and Village
Creek State Park. Additional picturesque golf is available when you follow the
Natural State Golf Trail. Created to showcase the scenic courses that dot the
state, the Golf Trail allows you to play through rolling hills, hardwood forests,
towering pines, grand prairies, fertile deltas, and alongside tranquil rivers, crisp
mountain lakes, and pristine streams. Since the Golf Trail’s 12 courses are spread
throughout the state at 11 unique locations, you will find ample opportunities to
enjoy the scenic countryside while traveling among them.
Part of my adventure brought me to
the eastern part of Arkansas called The
Delta. A unique geological formation
called Crowley’s Ridge rises several
hundred feet above The Delta’s flat
plain. My first stop at Village Creek
State Park, Arkansas’s second largest
state park in land area, spreads over
6,900 acres with 96 campsites. Nestled
The Ridges at Village Creek
on a nearby ridge are the park’s ten fullyequipped cabins that feature kitchens
and wood-burning fireplaces. This park has one of the more exciting 27-hole
golf layouts I have ever seen at The Ridges at Village Creek Golf Course. This
public course features the rolling terrain of Crowley’s Ridge, dramatic elevation
changes, and the backdrop of the surrounding hardwood forest’s seasonal beauty.
Depending on which configuration of the two nines you choose to play, the
yardage can stretch to more than 7400 yards. Water comes into play on 12 of the
holes. Do yourself a favor and stay overnight in one of the cabins so you can play
this course a couple of times. These three distinct nines offer outstanding golf and
fun challenges. This course is a real diamond in the rough and well worth the drive
to get there! Village Creek State Park lies two hours east of Little Rock, Arkansas,
or one hour west of Memphis, Tennessee.

as well as enjoyable recreational rounds. Holes of notable mention include the
second with a waterfall dedicated to the memory of the late Rachel Stewart, the
sixth with a tight tee shot between water on the left and trees on the right, the
signature ninth with a beautiful but treacherous water hazard from tee to green,
and the fourteenth that can rank among the toughest on the course if not played
properly. Part of the Natural State Golf Trail, the course hosts several regional
tournaments, and the Arkansas State University men’s and women’s golf teams
also call the course home.
While in Jonesboro, I recommend going downtown to dine at Skinny J’s. They
specialize in steaks, burgers, and interesting sandwich combos. They also have live
music several nights a week.
Further east, almost to the Mississippi River, I reached Blytheville where Thunder
Bayou Golf Course, also part of the Natural State Golf Trail, resides. The real star
of the show, their 18-hole links-style layout, presents more than 80 bunkers and
water that comes into play on seven holes. Experienced players can be challenged
and casual golfers can select the most appropriate tees for their skill level and
still enjoy the gorgeous landscapes. Play at Thunder Bayou spans more than 7000
unforgettable yards of rolling fairways, strategically placed hazards, and fast greens.
Although hole three is considered their signature hole, I found all of the holes
exciting.
Back in central Arkansas at Heber
Springs on a peninsula of Greers
Ferry Lake, the quaint Red Apple
Inn and Country Club sits. The Inn
was founded over 40 years ago with a
vision of gracious country living that
remains through today. Upgraded in
part, they have kept the natural wood
look, native stone, and lush plantings
to create a quiet elegance to enhance
relaxation. The dining room is situated
for panoramic views of the lake, the
landscaped patio, or the pleasantly shaded breezeway. They are proud to say that
“fine dining and attentive service come with the view.” More active guests can
North to Jonesboro I proceeded to Sage
Meadows Golf Course, a modern links
inspired, Tommy Bolt signature course
that is fair yet challenging to golfers
of all ages and skills. The semi-private
course has a great practice facility and
a very nice clubhouse with restaurant. I
liked getting to play on the zoysia grass
fairways and lush bentgrass greens.
With water on nine of the holes, Sage

enjoy the golf course, tennis courts, a fitness center,
lake, and forest trails.
The Inn’s 18-hole championship golf course differs a
little from than those mentioned above. The original
nine holes were built in 1969, but when the second
nine holes were added in 1979, they became holes
one through nine. The tree-lined, narrow fairways
meandering through the front nine are tempered a
bit by the back nine’s more forgiving, flatter fairways
even though some large trees still thrive. Hole
number two was once voted the most scenic hole
in Arkansas, and I could see why. This delightful
par-3 features about a 100-foot drop and a splendid
Red Apple
backdrop of trees. The mature course still maintains
traditional small green complexes that can make for
some interesting second shots! Before leaving the golf shop, be sure to pick up
some of the Southern Pecan Toffee. I have never had better toffee.
The last stop before heading to the
airport lies just north of the Red Apple
Inn in the town of Mountain View. Not
only will the drive be pretty, but the
family can take the opportunity to have
some old-fashioned fun at the Ozark
Folk Center State Park. A trip here by
itself provides enough of a reason to visit
this part of Arkansas. Arkansas’s unique
park is considered to be “A Wonderful
Way to Enjoy Yesterday” and America’s
only facility that works at preserving
the Ozark heritage and sharing it in an
entertaining way. “We keep the crafts,
music, and herblore of the Ozarks alive.”
They offer more than 18 pioneering
skills and crafts including candles, soap,
brooms, fiddles, and blacksmithing. And
then there is the music! I listened for
over an hour to a group of three called
“Whoa Mule” who played a fiddle,
guitar, and bass and shared music from
the 1820s to 1940s. The center also offers hands-on classes in different skills and
has a restaurant and cabins so you can enjoy it even more. A full calendar of events
is planned for the 2015 season.
Whether you seek to challenge your skills at a championship golf course or just
play for the pure joy, very enjoyable golf awaits you naturally in Arkansas.

#1 Municipal Golf Course in West Virginia —Golf Digest
One of the best values you can find in the Mid-Atlantic is
Bowling Green Country Club. Two 18-hole golf courses roll
across Virginia farmland with charming mountain views,
excellent conditions, and challenging play. The North
course features several lakes, towering willows and even
an island green. The par 71 tract is not incredibly long,
but requires well thought-out shots. The South course is
a favorite amongst seniors and ladies, but has plenty of
character golf for players of all abilities. A shorter course,
from today’s standards, the South provides challenges
with rolling fairways and large, undulating greens. Bowling
Green North and South, two of the best the Shenandoah
Valley has to offer, is located between Winchester and
Front Royal, off Route 522. Wingfield Golf Properties now
manages the courses.
One of the Mid-Atlantic’s most popular golf destinations
each year is the scenic Cacapon Resort State Park. This
challenging championship golf venue is set in the rolling
foothills of the 2,300 foot Cacapon Mountain and is the
centerpiece of the 6,000 acre park near Berkeley Springs,
West Virginia. Designed by famous golf course designer
Robert Trent Jones, Sr., the layout makes prime use of
the rolling hills at the base of the ridge. Rated as one of
the 130 best designed courses in the United States, this
outstanding facility features 73 well-placed sand bunkers
and three ponds. Holes 4 and 8 share a double green that
is more than 100 yards wide. USA Today put Cacapon on
its list of the “Top 100 Golf Courses” in the country. The
resort is located 30 minutes from I-81 on Route 522, and
just two hours from Baltimore and Washington, DC.

“One of the state’s premier nine hole layouts” —Virginia Golfer
One of Virginia’s oldest, continuously operating golf
courses is still one of the best golf values in all of the
Shenandoah Valley. Front Royal Golf Club is under the
operation, direction, and management of the County of
Warren and celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2013. This
1938 nine-hole layout features dual tee boxes to create
a true 18-hole feel. Front Royal is reminiscent of the old
Scottish links-style courses that require accuracy, not
length. The challenge comes from the small undulating
greens and deep bunkering. Four holes border the
Shenandoah River, more than any course in Virginia, with
none more dramatic than the par 5 seventeenth hole, which
features a tee shot along the river’s edge. Front Royal Golf
Club brings back the 4-hour round of golf. It’s a fun and
excellent test of golf you’re sure to enjoy. Conveniently
located just off I-66 at Exit 6 on Country Club Road in the
beautiful and historic Shenandoah Valley.
Carroll Valley Golf Course is pleased to be starting its
5th season under the ownership of the adjacent Liberty
Mountain Resort. Set amidst picturesque rolling hills,
surrounded by the inspiring Catoctin Mountains, Carroll
Valley offers 18 holes of Pennsylvania’s best golf. Many
upgrades have been made to the course including the
installation of a state-of-the-art irrigation system, rebuilding
tee boxes, installation of drainage systems, and new
bunkers. The resort is currently constructing a new $14
million dollar lodge that will include an expanded pro-shop,
state-of-the-art indoor golf simulators, more dining options,
and an indoor pool and fitness center. Guests will continue
to enjoy the stellar championship course and friendly
faces you have enjoyed over the years. This mature layout
designed by renowned architects Ault and Clark winds its

Pendleton Golf Club is one of Virginia’s most exciting
new and picturesque golf courses. Pendleton opened to
the public in September of 2006 and is located mid-point
between Richmond and Washington, D.C. in Ruther
Glen. Named after Virginia’s first acting governor Edmund
Pendleton, this course lives up to its lofty namesake.
Designed by Thomas Walker, former lead designer at the
Gary Player Design Company, this spectacular layout
combines creative mounding and undulating greens to
challenge all levels of players. The course stretches to
more than 7000 yards from the back tees, while ladies will
find the 4500 yard length accommodating. There are five
sets of tees in all. Pendleton also features one of the best
practice facilities and driving ranges in the Mid-Atlantic. The
grass tee alone at the range is OVER an acre. Call 804448-4727 or visit us on the web at pendletongolfva.com.
Encompassing more than 150 acres of breathtaking
mountain views without one house, condo, or townhouse
spoiling any fairway, Musket Ridge Golf Club is the final
gem designed by the late Gentleman Joe Lee and is known
as one of his finest works, joining the ranks of Doral and
LaCosta. From the first hole’s dramatic elevated tee shot,
golfers will view this course as one of the Free State’s
best. Undulating greens, strategically located visible
hazards from elevated tee boxes, and unique bunkering
are trademarks of this superbly conditioned golf course.
The friendly, professional staff believe that a day on the
golf course should reward golfers with the “perfect golf”
experience, and the food is second to no other public golf
course. Surrounded by abundant natural beauty and unique
topography, Musket Ridge is conveniently located just off
I-70, west of Frederick, in Myersville, MD.

In the heart of the Shenandoah Valley sits one of America’s
most spectacular golf courses. Packsaddle Ridge Golf Club
in Keezletown, Virginia, is a stunning 18-hole championship
golf course featuring incredible views of the valley below.
Golf Digest in 2003 voted Packsaddle #5 “Best New
Affordable Course.” $40,000 worth or renovations were
completed in the fall of 2014 on the front nine. This
breathtaking facility was built on more than 500 acres of
rolling countryside. Designed by renowned golf architect
Russell Breeden along with Jeff Forbes, this 4-year project
required an incredible one million tons of rock and 750,000
tons of top soil to be moved. The result is a layout that will
challenge all types of golfers and overload your senses with
natural beauty. Packsaddle Ridge is located 15 minutes off
Exit 247, east of I-81.
The perfect combination of traditional and modern golf can
be found in Fayetteville, Pennsylvania, at Penn National
Golf Club, home of two four star, 18-hole championship
courses. The Founders Course (1968-Ed Ault Design) is
a classic northeastern-style masterpiece featuring large
contoured greens, tree-lined rye/bluegrass fairways,
sculpted bunkers, and a 7-acre lake. Iron Forge (1996-Bill
Love) is a contemporary design with bentgrass tees,
fairways, and greens and fescue bluegrass roughs. Iron
Forge has links characteristics with well-placed mounding
and tall native grasses in the outer rough areas. “Play
among the stars” at Penn National, located 18 miles west
of Gettysburg, close to I-81 and I-70. Stay & Play packages
are available at the on-site 52 room Inn.

Imagine yourself playing South Riding Golf Club – a
golfer's dream come true. Set in the gentle hills of Northern
Virginia, amidst the hardwood trees, grassy meadows, and
picturesque water features, South Riding boasts a Dan
Maples signature championship golf course, which has
challenged golfers since 1997. South Riding Golf Club is
a semi-private club that is open to everyone, and the only
requisite to becoming a member is that you are looking for
a world-class golf experience in a relaxing environment.
The course is located in the award-winning community
of South Riding in Loudoun County, just 25 miles west of
Washington DC. South Riding Golf Club is popular with all
skill levels and offers a challenging layout with a variety of
tee placements. No matter what your handicap, you will feel
welcome at South Riding Golf Club.
Designed by architect J. Michael Poellot and two-time
U.S. Open Champion Ernie Els, Whiskey Creek is as big
and bold as the land itself. Bordered by a high ridge of
hardwoods and a winding, free-flowing creek, the course
features wetlands, rock outcroppings, stone walls, streams,
and dramatic views of the Catoctin Mountains. Like most of
the tested and true championship courses, Whiskey Creek
is an honest golf course with its challenges and hazards
in plain sight. The holes at Whiskey Creek are designed to
test a player’s shotmaking ability, never more evident than
the par 5 closer, with ruins of an old farmhouse splitting the
fairway with great risk-reward opportunities. Come see the
drama that awaits just minutes off I-270, Exit 26, on Route
80 in Urbana, Maryland.

The Gauntlet Golf Club ~ Prepare Ye Weapons
Nick Ciattei
If you really think about it, the sport
of golf matches golfers toe-to-toe with
the course itself. Yes, you might take on
an opponent as in other sports, but the
actual battle pits the golfer against the
course rather than their opponent. In
the mid-Atlantic, several courses bring
thoughts of combat by the mere mention
of their name, and The Gauntlet Golf
Club in Fredericksburg is one of those
battlefields.
Hole 2 Par 5
The name “Gauntlet” itself needs
examining. In medieval times knights
wore a glove or mitten, made of
mail or plate, called a gauntlet, and
architect, PB Dye, known for designing
challenging and creative golf courses,
has forged a striking fortress for golf
on the shores of Curtis Lake. The
Gauntlet incorporates some target
Hole 4 Par 4
golf philosophy, undulating bentgrass
green complexes, and unique design
features. Dye moved a lot of earth with towering, sculptured bunkers and modern
mounding prevalent throughout the layout. Four sets of tees provide a comfortable
range from the red tees at just less than 5000 yards to 6900 from the tips. Three
of the first five holes play along and sometimes over the lake. Curtis Lake runs
down the entire left side of the 493-yard par 5 second hole with a wetland area
crossing the fairway just inside 150 yards. The layup area over the marsh appears
smaller from the fairway than its actual size. Pinpoint accuracy yields a bonus on
this breathtaking hole where the green resides on a peninsula. More shoreline
adventure awaits on the par 4 fourth. A sharp dogleg left around the lake beckons
big hitters to cut the corner. Even those who play it safe need to negotiate several
gaping bunkers and a “Dye”-abolical three-tiered green. Take a deep breath
because you are almost through the toughest stretch of holes at The Gauntlet.
The par 5 fifth, a natural three-shot hole, plays with water to your left off the tee.
A second shot must carry a finger of the lake that crosses the fairway. From there,
travel uphill to a large, well-protected green. After the par 3 sixth, a trio of par 4s
close out the front nine. The par 4 eighth, which is almost as long as a couple of
the par 5s at 470 yards, plays downhill after the drive, as does number nine.
leads the way to the par 5 thirteenth,
the longest hole on the course. The
last par 3, fifteen, spans well over 200
yards. Three here is gold. While holes
eleven through fifteen offer a links feel,
the three closing par 4s play through a
wooded parkland setting. Seventeen’s
dogleg left demands an uphill second
shot that ends on The Gauntlet’s most
intimidating green armed with deep
bunkers. You’ll be wise to take an extra
club on your approach to the beautiful
uphill par 4 eighteenth.
Hole 17 Par 4
The comprehensive practice facility
at The Gauntlet includes about 20 tee
stations and several target areas on
the range. The facility also includes a
practice bunker and chipping area. The
full service terrace clubhouse’s veranda
overlooks the eighteenth green and makes an ideal late afternoon campground
to settle bets, bandage any wounds, and discuss tactics for ye next war game
endeavors at The Gauntlet.
The inward nine at The Gauntlet starts with a straight, up-the-tree-chute par 5
that plays longer than suggested. Bunkers border the fairway as well as front the
putting surface. By contrast, distance wins over accuracy on the par 4 eleventh
where all the trouble looms to the right. The par 3 twelfth, the shortest hole,

Penn National Golf Club & Inn ~ Here We Go Again
By Nick Ciattei
Make no mistake. Penn National Golf
Club & Inn in Mont Alto, PA, is one
of the most popular and successful 36hole golf operations in the entire midAtlantic region. Two award winning
18-hole golf courses and comfortable
lodging entertain golfers for an entire
day or several days. A short road trip
from the Washington and Baltimore
Founders Hole 8 Par 4
metropolises can have you swinging the
club on both the Founders Course and
the Iron Forge Course in the same day. Travelers from outside the area vacation
at Penn National for several days each year as they sojourn to this South Central
Pennsylvania golf landmark for the perfect stay and play package.
The Founders Course, the work of long
time popular Northeast golf architect Ed
Ault, plays 5360 yards from the forward
tees and presents a real challenge for
the ladies. Measuring a chip shot under
7000 yards from the tips, even the best
players enjoy tackling its expansive girth.
The great par 4 starting hole plays from
an elevated tee to a green set against a
Founders Hole 16 & 17 Par 4 & 3
large lake that is the focal point of some
of the key holes. The first par 5, the
second, stretches around the corner of a water hazard and offers a realistic birdie
opportunity if you can keep it in the short grass. The par 4 eighth is rated the
hardest hole while the ninth boasts being the longest par 3 on the front side. I’d
choose the inward nine as one of my favorites in the mid-Atlantic with its solid
test of golf from start to finish. Many golfers remember The Founders Course for
its three pretty darn good closing holes. The most identifiable holes on the course,
the sixteenth and seventeenth, par 4 and 3 respectively, play around and over the
aforementioned lake.
Iron Forge Hole 4 Par 4
make this course a driver’s paradise.
The par 3 sixth hole plays over water
to a green fortressed by a stone wall. A
rustic, towering silo, remnants of the
old farmland, stay intact as a backdrop
to Iron Forge’s signature par 5 eleventh.
The par 4 fifteenth, also a visual pleaser,
plays downhill to a green bordered
on the right by a large lake laced with
fieldstone.

Penn National has always prided themselves in making a golf trip easy. Lodging is
located right on the property with golfer-friendly crafted bungalows that house up
to 16 golfers. The White Manor House, circa 1840s, houses guest services. Penn
National is still located in a “dry” county, so make sure you bring plenty beverages.
The staff will be happy to provide a cooler and ice for your cold ones.
In addition, Penn National’s adult community of more than 1,000 families has
been ranked among “America’s Best Master Planned Communities” for ten
straight years by Where to Retire magazine. The beauty of the surrounding area
along with the accessibility and affordability of living there are the main draws. At
Penn National, whether you spend a day, a week, or a lifetime, you get to wake up
and do it all over again.
The Iron Forge Course at Penn
National opened in 1996 and was
lauded immediately as one of the
best new courses in America. Bill
Love’s wind-swept links design has
aged beautifully and definitely shows
contrast to The Founders Course.

Golfweek has released its highly anticipated “Best Courses Issue.” This special
edition unveils the complete rankings of Golfweek’s best classic, modern, and
state-by-state courses, which together illustrate how public layouts continue to
rise through the ranks of the game’s greatest tracts. To produce Golfweek’s “Best
Courses” lists, an expert team of more than 725 course raters used a 10-point
ranking system to identify the best layouts from two distinctly different eras: pre1960 and 1960-present. The exclusive system recognizes that before 1960 – the
year that separates classic from modern – most course designers relied on native
contours for course features. Since 1960, as the game became more popular,
designers began to utilize high-tech engineering and advanced mechanical means
to transform the landscape to suit their designs. In Maryland, three of The Golf
Guide’s feature courses have been recognized while one in Virginia also made
the grade. Three courses all in the Frederick, MD, region cracked the top ten in

held in Orlando, FL, back in January. More than 1,000 companies and brands
introduced their new and innovative golf equipment, apparel, accessories, and

to grow the business of golf and participation in the game. “The PGA Merchandise
Show creates an extensive array of opportunities for a growing number of PGA
professionals, golf buyers, and industry leaders,” said PGA of America President

major brands, coupled with the energy and enthusiasm we saw throughout the

entertainment source. “I’m very excited to be among the first teachers associated
with the new, dynamic Golf Channel Academy,” said Larkin, selected for Golf
Digest’s Best Young Teachers in America rankings (Top 40 under 40) since 2012.
“This is a chance for golf instructors to work together,

in both teaching and the business of teaching. I think
it’s going to propel the coaches and coaching forward

Bottlepops–Sound Off
bottlepops.com
smathersandbranson.com
This product immediately found a place in our sports cave! You read
right. I said OUR sports cave. A huge Washington Capitals and Redskins
fan, my lady spends as much time in front of the 80" as I do. Bottlepops,
a sports-themed bottle opener, adds the twist (no pun intended) of making
fun sounds when you use them to take the top off of that cold one whether
it be a beer or soda. In fact with BottlePops, you do not even need to
twist. Simply place it over the bottle cap and pull and an entertaining
sound clip specific to the featured sport plays. Most of you will probably
choose the golf ball Bottlepop, but you can select from many other sports
including baseball, football, basketball, soccer, and auto racing. Designed
to look and feel just like the actual ball with 15-25 fun sound bites, you
will never get bored with this feature. It would make a great Father’s Day
gift. Pop a Top! (Ciattei)
Those who seek a totally unique golf item will appreciate this product.
One would not usually associate hand-stitched needlepoint with golf right
away. Smathers and Branson, a company that’s been around for more
than 10 years, creates one-of-kind accessories including wallets, belts,
flip-flops, and hats. You’ll find clever “Caddyshack” items as well as
general golf merchandise. Many other hobbies and passions also in their
mix of offerings include hunting, fishing, and a patriotic theme for the good
ole USA. Smathers and Branson have also aligned with Major League
Baseball and the National Hockey League to feature MLB and NHL teams.
Again, one of their pieces would make a nice, unusual gift for dad on
Father’s Day. He will remember it for a long time for its fine quality and craftsmanship. So, if your guy
enjoys the somewhat “preppy” look, Smathers and Branson has you covered. They sell through more than
1,000 retail outlets in addition to online. (Ciattei)
Leupold GX®-1i2 Rangefinder–Pin Hunter Wilson Golf Balls–Killing It Softly
leupold.com
Any serious golfer considers rangefinders essential to their equipment
needs. We have reviewed the Leupold brand several times, and once again
we proclaim the new GX®-1i2 rangefinder a winner. We have raved about
the compact look and feel of Leupold’s selections in the past, but recent
technical advancements including their Prism LockTM feature brings
accuracy and individuality to a new level. This latest installment from
Leupold changes the spectrum when it comes to rangefinders. You can
customize it to fit your needs while on the course. We really liked the
Fog Mode that provided continued use on a drizzly early season morning. Simply one of best rangefinders
you can put in your bag when you are getting close to make birdie, Leupold hunts pins better than anyone.

Shashi Cool Feet Socks–Tootsie Roll
shashionline.com
Whether I’m on or off the golf course, my feet must be comfortable.
I also belong to a couple of bowling leagues in the off season and
appreciate a cozy feel for my tootsies on the lanes. Shashi Cool Feet
Socks are made with a breathable panel across the top of the foot that
keeps them cool and dry on the hottest days, during the hardest workouts,
or on a casual walk around the neighborhood. Any female athlete as well
as dancers and gymnasts will find them ideal. They feature a perfect fit
with a right and a left sock and slip resistant grippers on the bottom of
each sock that adds stability and traction. I like all of my accessories to
be a stylish addition to my outfit. Cool Feet Socks’ variety of colors and styles gives me the options I like
and allows me to go directly from the golf course to the dance floor! (Barge)
Fila® Outerwear–Taking on the Elements
fila.com
This area’s brutal winter may have ended, but the air can still feel cool
on early spring mornings when on the golf course. Always stylish Fila
solves the problem again with the St. Anton Zipper Sweater for men.
Awesomely comfortable, this type of outerwear can be worn during any
season that you can play. A Velcro closure on the long sleeves makes
them easy to adjust, and the soft Tech-Dry material allows ample room
for the range of motion needed for your swing. An added reflective insert
surrounds the sweater to provide joggers safety while out on the streets.
Available at many fine departments stores including Kohl’s, Fila always
makes a statement on the links. (Ciattei)

I have been a long-time supporter of Wilson Golf having played their irons
for a better part of my golfing career. Needless to say, I was excited to get
my hands on a couple dozen of Wilson’s newest golf balls. They promote
their latest additions to the golf ball war as the “World’s Softest Golf
Ball” you can play. As one who resembles a bull in a china closet around
the greens, my game needs that soft feel. Wilson’s DUO and DUO Spin
have super low compressions that the golf industry has never seen before. Wilson Staff has been pushing
distance through the ball’s soft feel for some time with ratings at 29 and 35 respectively. The days of the
high compression golf ball may be in our rear view mirror. Long and soft are two words that very rarely
go together…in GOLF! After a couple of rounds under my belt playing this ball, the Wilson DUO and DUO
Spin will remain a part of my golf ball rotation because it’s always nice to have a couple of strong bullets
loaded. (Ciattei)
Bubi Bottle–Crush It bubibottle.com
I live an active lifestyle. I bowl in two leagues, walk every morning, do
Zumba twice a week, and when I get the chance, knock the little white
ball around a little. Whatever my activity, I always have a bottle of water
handy to replenish fluids. A groovy variation on the normal water bottle
that I have been so accustomed to using has now popped up. The Bubi
(pronounced boo-bee), a BPA-free beverage bottle that collapses into a compact unit, stores easily in your
golf or gym bag. The folks at Bubi use the word “scrunchable” when describing the folding ability of this
bottle. You can even take it from the freezer right to the microwave, so Bubi holds hot liquids also. This
would make a wonderful goodie bag entry or favor, and you can have it customized with your business logo
and information. Conclusion – Bubi is a better bottle. (Barge)
Personal Golf Tote–Carry All My Wayward Son
PGFfan.com
As one who sometimes goes to the golf course like a businessman would
go to the office, I have found that at times the golf cart just does not have
enough room for my gear. When I review a course, I bring a desktop of
supplies as well as my camera and clubs. The Personal Golf Tote can handle
all of that and more. Perfectly designed to shimmy over the side rail of any
golf cart, this handy dandy store all carries all of your personal belongings
and on-course golf needs. Not only does the Personal Golf Tote have lots of
compartments to stash stuff, its water-resistant fabric will protect your valuables from the elements. It can
be customized making it ideal for tournaments and businesses. So stick your business’s logo right on the
side. If you are looking for one for yourself, go online and personalize it with your name or initials. Now, I
have the needed space to store my stuff, and believe me, I can tote plenty! (Ciattei)

Stwrap–Team Spirit stwrap.com
The O’s, the Ravens, the Caps, the Terps, and Dale Jr. constitute just a
few of my sports favorites. If you are like me, you don your teams’ colors
whenever you can to show your support. You can always spot me on the
golf course with a shirt, towel, or hat boasting one of my squads, but
now I have a neat addition to my golf bag. The Stwrap (pronounced Strap) fits a majority of bag straps,
not just golf bags, but also travel bags, cooler straps, gym bags, you name it. If it has a strap, you can
most likely Stwrap it with your team’s logo. I Stwrapped an Orioles logo on my computer bag, so now
when I travel everyone knows that I shout “O” during the National Anthem and am proud of it. Stwrap is
officially licensed by every major sports league, so you can strap several of these collectibles to support all
of your darlings. Hmmm...I smell team spirit. (Ciattei)
Zepp Golf–The Future Is Now
zepp.com
Did you ever think that one day you would be able to buy a device that
you simply attach to your golf glove and within seconds you could analyze
your own swing? Zepp Golf opened my eyes to a training device that I
swear Q introduced to Bond...James Bond! I found it relatively easy to
set up. After you download the free app and follow its instructions, attach
the bold-colored sensor to your glove and you get immediate feedback. I
have to admit that I was a bit leery about seeing the flaws and faults to
my swing. Zepp Golf will assist you with your club speed, club plane, backswing and more. I was pleased
that the tempo of my swing, which I have been always told is pretty good, scored well on the metrics
delivered from Zepp. This modern day golf device, available at most golf stores nationwide, will make
another great Father’s Day gift. This year, I look forward to taking my practice swing sessions seriously
and improving my golf game with the help of my Zepp device. (Ciattei)

Feel Good Golf Stories

With so much bad news in the world, it’s refreshing to see that the game of
golf can be a source of happiness and inspiration for those who have seemingly
insurmountable obstacles placed in their way. There is so much good that the great
game of golf has to offer. This column features two of my favorites – kids and our
troops. Enjoy, and Play Golf!

Three-year-old Tommy Morrissey was born without a right
arm and LOVES golf. You may have seen the feature about
Tommy on the Golf Channel website. I am amazed by the fact
that Tommy, who is just a regular kid, attacks life with a zest
and zeal that is refreshing. He even named his missing limb
Nemo and slept in his crib with golf clubs instead of Teddy
Bears. My kind of kid! Way to Go Tommy!
At Fort Belvoir in Alexandria, VA, Head PGA Professional
Steve Greiner started an adaptive sports golf clinic to help
wounded soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Since
its inception, the Wounded Warrior Golf Program has assisted more than 600
brave men and women in overcoming physical and psychological setbacks as they
recover from their injuries. PGA professionals from all over the Middle Atlantic
spend time in the spring and fall teaching the basics of the game to these heroes
and their families. We know golf can be frustrating, but it can also be extremely
therapeutic.
The Salute Military Golf Association (SMGA) was cofounded by PGA Professional
Jim Estes of Olney, MD, with a mission statement of “Empowering Wounded
Warriors, One Fairway at a time.” Since its inception, SMGA has given more than
2,000 private lessons to post 9/11 wounded and injured veterans, provided more
than 800 custom-fitted sets, hosts more than 80 clinics per year nationwide, and
operates nine chapters nationwide.
Listen to the story of 1st Lieutenant Brian Donarski, United
States Army (Retired). “Ski” Donarski served over 10
years in the United States Marine Corps and was honorable
discharged in 1998. After 9/11, he re-enlisted in the US
Army. In 2005, Donarski was seriously wounded during
combat in Iraq. He suffered a traumatic brain injury, PTSD,
fractures to his neck and back, loss of vision in his right
eye, and had surgery on both shoulders. As is the case with many soldiers who
participate in SMGA or other golf programs dedicated to helping our soldiers,
Brian credits the game of golf as a big part of his recovery. “I know golf is a
healer because the world was too busy when I came back and was injured. Golf put
me in slow motion to allow me to rehabilitate at the pace I needed instead of trying
to speed everything up. My body needed time, and golf taught me that.”
Its stories like those of Tommy, Brian, and others that just penetrate my soul
and reinforce why I Love This Game and want to share my love of the game with
others. God Bless America and ALL of her Heroes!

Larry Ringer, PGA Teaching Professional
MAPGA Hall of Fame
Musket Ridge Golf Club, Myersville, Maryland
With spring finally here we are ready to begin our
annual quest toward breaking par! Unfortunately,
we did nothing over the winter months to help us get
ready for that challenge. Oh yes! We had high hopes
and a great plan to work out three times a week and
find the time to practice our putting in the family
room by making those five footers into an empty water
glass. But, those family obligations, those weekends doing chores inside the house,
and the fact that it really felt good to sleep later than usual kept us from working
on those goals.
Now, what do we do? Do we go through another season of struggling to get that
feeling back in our swing and that touch back on the greens? Or, do we actually
take the time and set aside a few dollars to take a series of lessons from the local
PGA professional? Do we actually think that lessons will improve our game or will
it just mess up what has felt comfortable over the last few seasons?
Well, as a PGA professional who has taught thousands of students over the last 35
years, the best medicine for improving your game in the spring is to find the time
and get a series of golf lessons! Without a doubt it will provide you with a solid
foundation towards getting the clubface on the ball and giving you a blueprint for
the overall improvement to your golf game.
Most of the students who come to me in the spring want to hit the ball more
solidly, be more consistent, and drive the ball longer. What I try to teach early in
each season is getting the student to develop a more consistent position and feel at
impact. In fact, if you are asked what position is the most important in golf, you
should know the answer is the impact position. Keeping that in mind, I try to work
with my students on the short game before any efforts are made to hit it farther.
Developing a team concept (teacher and student) will enhance your enjoyment for
the game and long-range plans for improvement will come into focus sooner. If
you are planning to spend some time on your golf game this year, then it should be
with a plan and some goals. Making yourself a plan with a PGA professional will
only enhance your practice sessions and make them more efficient by working on
certain goals.
So, before you go out and get frustrated with your game this spring, make the
effort to contact your local PGA professional and set up a series of lessons.
Remember, this game is way too hard to master by yourself. Get some quality
instruction and make sure you work at the plan your teacher sets up for you. I
assure you that your game will improve, you will begin to enjoy the game even
more, and more importantly, you will start to lower your golf scores.
If you need help contacting a PGA Professional near you, please feel free to
contact me at [email protected] or call me at 304-279-7524. Good
luck and good golfing in 2015!
