Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! As Christ is risen and we celebrate
His Resurrection by breaking our fast, I reflect on the words our
Holy Father Saint Augustine shared with us:
“The season before Easter signifies the troubles in which we live
while the time after Easter, which we are celebrating at present,
signifies the happiness that will be ours in the future. What we
commemorate before Easter is what we experience in this life.
What we celebrate after Easter points to something we do not yet
possess. This is why we keep the first season with fasting and
prayer, but now the fast is over! And we devote the present season
to Praise! Such is the meaning of the Alleluia we sing!”
-Saint Augustine of Hippo
I pray you all have a joyous Easter Season. I have been happy to
hear that many of our Augustinian parishes in the Midwest have
embraced the Jubilee of Mercy this Lent by finding ways to carry
out the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy: blood drives,
food pantries, clothing collections, and more. This is truly the
work of Christ! Let us continue these great works of mercy
throughout Easter and beyond!
In other news, the deadline is approaching to attend our fourth
annual Augustinian Gala which will be held on April 22nd at the
Drake Hotel in Chicago. This gala will honor Fr. Mike Slattery,
O.S.A.; Ernie Mrozek; and the late Fr. Ted Tack, O.S.A.; the
deadline to RSVP or sponsor an ad in the gala program book is
Friday, April 8th. You are also welcome to attend our Diamond
Jubilee Closing Mass at St. Rita of Cascia Shrine Chapel in
Chicago on April 23rd. Visit midwestaugustinians.org/events for
more information about these events.
On behalf of all the Augustinians, I wish you a happy Easter!
Our Mother of Good Counsel, pray for us!
Sincerely in Christ and St. Augustine,

Session B
What will help you to believe? Today’s scripture readings tell
of faith and doubt. They offer stories “recorded to help you
believe,” as the passage from John’s Gospel (20:31) remarks
today. There is an urgency about this. On this Second Sunday
of Easter, we are challenged to join the company of believers—
countless men and women who witnessed the power of the
apostles’ faith.
There is no doubt that this power comes from Jesus Christ.
The second reading, from the book of Revelation, reports
John’s mystical vision of the Son of Man, who proclaims,
“Once I was dead, but now I live” (Revelation 1:18). The
Gospel gathers everyone but Thomas to see the Risen Jesus
and receive the Holy Spirit from him. Like Thomas, we who
have come along later must have faith so that we can have life.

TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — The apostles perform many signs and
wonders among the people. Many are added to their numbers
(Acts 5:12-16).
Psalm — Give thanks to the Lord for He is good, His love is
everlasting (Psalm 118).
Second Reading — John, caught up in the spirit, envisions the
glorified Lord, the first and the last, the one who lives
(Revelation 1:9-11a, 12-13, 17-19).
Gospel — The risen Christ comes to His disciples with peace
and the Spirit. The absent Thomas doubts
(John 20:19-31).

The Midwest Augustinians have served in the Midwest for over 100 years.
They have served at numerous parishes (including Our Mother of Good
Counsel) over the years, taught at area schools (Providence Catholic High
School), and served as local retreat and hospital chaplains.
The Augustinians will be holding their 4th annual gala on Friday, April 22, 2016 at the Drake Hotel in
downtown Chicago. This year’s honorees include Fr. Michael Slattery, O.S.A., Mr. Ernie Mrozek
(president of St. Rita High School in Chicago) and the late Fr. Ted Tack, O.S.A., Prior General
Emeritus of the Augustinian Order.
The proceeds of the fundraiser benefit the Augustinian formation and vocation efforts, the retired and
infirm Augustinians, and Augustinian missions in Peru. To get more information about the gala or to
order tickets, please visit www.augustiniangala.org.
Individual tickets are $300 each, sponsored tables are $3,500, and full color program book ads or
congratulatory messages start at just $100. (Deadline for ad submission is April 8.)
Divine Mercy Sunday
THIS SUNDAY, April 3rd—3 PM
Divine Mercy Sunday is the Second Sunday of the Easter season. It was named by Pope John
Paul II at the canonization of St. Maria Faustina on April 30, 2000, and then officially decreed by
the Vatican.
Divine Mercy Sunday can be seen as the convergence of all the mysteries and graces of Holy Week and Easter Week.
It is like a multi-exposure photograph of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, and Easter Week.
Or we can think of it as a converging lens that focuses the light of the Risen Christ into a radiant beam of merciful love
and grace for the whole world.
Please join the Worship Commission in reciting the
Chaplet of Divine Mercy THIS Sunday, April 3rd at 3 PM.

In the area of time and talent, many individuals commit a certain number of hours each
week to prayer and charitable activities. In the area of treasure, some Christians choose
the biblical norm of giving ten percent or more of treasure. Others might start at two,
three or four percent, and work upwards.
