Principal Kurt Rosenbaum
“The total proceeds for the first two days
were $9.75. The total proceeds for the entire
month were $275.30. Expenses were
$114.03.” (Quoted from program of the
dedication of the current ALA property and
building, 1/11/87, p. 19.)
expanded later to continue support for ALA.
Over the years, hundreds of dedicated
volunteers and a few paid staff members
kept the store open, receiving donations and
selling goods, all out of love for a school and
living for an Audience of One.
Though these numbers are in 1970 dollars
($275 = $1712 in 2015), one still wonders
how something so seemingly insignificant
could accomplish much of anything.
About five years ago, circumstances in the
neighborhood around the Thrift Store and
the growth of large chain operations for
second-hand items brought about a marked
drop in activity, and the Board that oversees
this business determined eventually that it
was no longer feasible to continue
operations. The Thrift Store will close its
doors after business on Wednesday,
September 30, 2015, nearly forty-five years
after its first day of sales.
These statements summarize the beginning
of operation of the HELP Foundation Thrift
Store, the beginning of a dream that was to
be Arizona Lutheran Academy. A group of
mothers desiring a Lutheran high school
option for their elementary school children
considered running garage sales, but the
stakes were raised when the Thrift Store
opened its doors on December 1, 1970, in a
small shop on Van Buren near 15th Avenue.
In the first fifteen years of its operation, the
Thrift Store contributed nearly $500,000
(1970’s and 1980’s money) to the opening
and running of ALA!
We take a moment to reflect on the wonder
of those years and to thank God for his
marvelous blessings through that
institution. We cannot identify by name all
the many Christian people who donated tens
of thousands of hours and countless items
for sale since 1970, but collectively we offer
them our hearty and sincere thanks.

Gaining Ground. We are humbled and thankful that
God is blessing our campaign through his people.

Well done, good and faithful servants!
NEW this year! We will have
strawberry milk (Danzeisen Dairy) and
strawberry ice cream (Scooptacular)
for purchase during the games. All
donations collected will be given to the
Side-Out Foundation.
We will continue to promote Gaining Ground for
two more months, so there is still time for you to
pray and ask God how you can be a part of our
vision for the future. Our students still need your
support as we serve them with the message of the
Gospel.

Homecoming week information – 2015
Dear ALA parents and students,
Homecoming is always a special time at ALA. It provides the opportunity to build friendships, show
school spirit, and develop school pride. The ALA student council has planned a wide variety of
activities for the homecoming week and weekend.
Friday, October 16, features a special day for eighth grade students to come and experience ALA. In
the afternoon they will join the ALA students for chapel at 12:40 and a pep rally at 2:25.
There is a separate Homecoming Planner/Calendar posted on the Parent Resource page of
ALAcoyotes.org. The planner has been given to all students also. There are many ways for students
to get involved: help with the wall decorations, participate in dress-up days, help with the skit, be
loud at the pep rally, attend the Tailgate Supper, play in or cheer at the cross country meet,
volleyball and football games, and attend the dance on Saturday night with their school mates.
Homecoming concludes Saturday evening, October 17, with the Homecoming Dance. ALA is
committed to doing everything possible to ensure a safe, secure and Christian environment for our
students. The dance runs from 7 pm to 10 pm. Students and parents are encouraged to help with a
brief takedown immediately following the dance. All parents are urged to be sure that they know
their child’s whereabouts after the dance and that any after-dance gathering has appropriate adult
supervision.
Please review the dance policies and dress code on the back side of this letter. The ALA dance is a
lock-in. That means that students are not allowed to go to or from their vehicles during the dance.
Once students leave the dance, they are not allowed to return. Parent chaperones are always
welcome to join us at no cost. Student ticket prices are $10 for each student and they are being sold
at school from October 5-15. Tickets cost $12 each the day of the dance.
Thank you for your help in making this year’s homecoming a safe and memorable one. I welcome
any questions.
Serving Jesus,
Gary D. Gray, Student Council Advisor

Dance policies and dress code
Homecoming 2015
As an extracurricular function of ALA, the homecoming dance is an opportunity to enjoy Christian
fellowship and God-pleasing recreation. To that end, it is critical that both dress and conduct reflect
an attitude of decency, modesty, and Christian love.
General policies








The dance will begin at 7 pm.
The dance is a lock-in. That means that students are not allowed to go to or from their
vehicles during the dance. Once students leave the dance, they are not allowed to return.
The homecoming dance is intended primarily for ALA students. Guests of ALA students will
be admitted provided that they have been pre-registered with ALA no later than
Wednesday, October 15 at 3pm. The guest’s name and valid parent contact phone number
must be furnished. No more than one guest per ALA student is permitted.
We will play only music that is appropriate for a Christian setting.
All dancing must be modest and safe. Couples must remain face-to-face. Reckless or “mosh
pit” type dancing will not be tolerated.
Light food and beverages will be provided at the dance.
The dance will conclude at 10 pm. Please be on time when picking up students.
All student council members are required to remain at ALA following the dance until the
cleanup is complete. Help from parents and the student body is always appreciated!
Dance dress code
The homecoming dance dress code is a reflection of who we are—redeemed children of God who
seek to glorify him in everything that we do. Since the homecoming dance is a “formal” activity, the
following standards will apply.
Prom/Dance Attire
The following standards will be adhered to at events where formal wear is worn. Girls must wear
attire that is modest and that meet the following criteria:
For the girls:
 Girls’ clothing must not expose cleavage. No midriffs can be exposed. Covering these areas
with lace, netting, or other see-through material is not acceptable.
 The length of the dress or the slit on the dress may be no more than 4” above the knees.
 The back of the dress must not go lower than a standard bra line.
 A strapless dress with sweetheart or straight-across necklines are acceptable—no keyholes
or plunging V’s.
For the guys:
 A tuxedo, a dress suit, or a blazer with dress slacks, OR
 A long-sleeved dress shirt with dress slacks; a tie is optional
Students not in compliance with the dress code must be able to permanently remedy the
problem immediately. If a student is unwilling or unable to comply, parents will be
contacted and the student will be dismissed from the dance.
