WASHINGTON (BP) – The U.S. Supreme Court has delivered a historic ruling in favor of same-sex marriage, but it stopped short of redefining marriage nationwide. In one of two rulings regarding gay marriage, the high
court struck down Wednesday, June 26, a federal law defining marriage as
only between a man and a woman.
In a breakthrough for homosexual couples, the court said in a 5-4 decision the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) violated “equal protection”
under the Constitution by refusing to recognize gay marriages. The opinion means same-sex couples will have access to employee, Social Security,
tax and other benefits previously limited to heterosexual couples.
In the other case about gay marriage, the justices appeared to provide a
limited victory for same-sex marriage advocates. The court’s 5-4 ruling on
a procedural question apparently will have the effect of allowing to stand a
federal judge’s invalidation of a California amendment that limited marriage to heterosexual couples. In its opinions, however, the Supreme Court
did not legalize same-sex marriage throughout the country or rule that
states cannot limit marriage to a man and a woman.
Southern Baptist leaders expressed remorse at the high court’s opin-

ions, especially in the DOMA case. Ethicist Russell D. Moore described the
DOMA ruling as “far-reaching, with massive implications for family life and
religious liberty.”
“The grounding of this decision in equal protection and human dignity
means this is not simply a procedural matter of federalism. This is a new
legal reality,” said Moore, president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty
Commission.
Appearing on CNN Wednesday morning, R. Albert Mohler Jr. said many
dates in American history stand out as red letter days and “this is one of
those days.”
“I think even as there are many people celebrating this, we recognize
this is a major cultural divide over something as basic as marriage,” said
Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. “It is, I think,
something that will be very, very devastating for our country over the long
term because what it means is the inevitable marginalization of marriage
and the subversion of the most essential institution for human existence.”
Executive Committee President Frank Page called the DOMA decision in

When America’s founders faced challenges,
they often had the wisdom and insight to call for
a national day of prayer. America is facing challenges today that, in many ways, rival anything
since the start of World War II.
There is a concerted effort to redefine marriage
as any union between people, regardless of sex,
possibly even regardless of the number of participants in that union and possible even regardless of
the blood relationship between them.
America continues to abort unborn babies by
the millions, and now has moved further in the
direction of euthanasia on both ends of the life
spectrum - possibly even making it a matter of
national, state-controlled health-care mandates.
American foreign policy seems directionless,
no longer with the primary concern being
national security, but in fostering and fomenting
change for the sake of change and breaking
down the barriers of national sovereignty.
Government seems determined to enforce a
monopoly on force by making it more difficult
for Americans to exercise their constitutionally
protected right to procure and bear firearms.
Government and cultural institutions are
breaking down the pillars and principles upon
which self-government has been built.
Government is building up its authority and
diminishes the role God plays as the supreme
authority in the lives of free people.
The people are responding, predictably, by
doing what’s right in their own eyes, as the people of ancient Israel did before their judgment.
These are just some of the overwhelming
problems our nation faces.
Government is broken. No longer does
Washington see itself as a servant of the people
but rather as their master. So where do we turn?
How can we save America? What would our
founders do faced with such predicaments?
Those of us who understand the challenges we
face for the very survival of America as we have
known it throughout most of its history... a shining city on a hill... one nation under God... must
start planning now to do something radical.
A nationwide day of prayer and repentance
can have an enormous impact on restoring our
country. Imagine thousands of churches open-
ing their doors to millions of worshippers who
heartily confess their sins, seek forgiveness and
pray for salvation and redemption and the
restoration of our country.
Will you make a note on your calendar now to
join us in that commitment?
Will you help spread the word to the remnant
of Americans who understand what we’re up
against?
Will you talk to your pastors and Bible study
leaders and get them on board?
Will you sign up to register your expression of
support and your intention to participate?

This is a matter between God and His people.
His word tells us in 2 Chronicles 7:14: If my
people, which are called by my name, shall
humble themselves, and pray, and seek my
face, and turn from their wicked ways; then
will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their
sin, and will heal their land.
We’ve got our instructions. God is waiting on
us to act – His people. He’s not waiting on the
whole world to act. He’s not waiting on a majority of Americans to act. He's waiting on us.
Will we follow His command and accept His
promise to forgive our sin and heal our land?

a written statement “a wrong decision with far-reaching moral
and religious liberty implications. With one stroke of the pen,
this Court has redefined the universal, historical, and biblical
ideal of marriage as a monogamous relationship between one
man and one woman.”
In contrast, same-sex marriage advocates were ecstatic at
the developments.
Kevin Cathcart, executive director of Lambda Legal,
described it as a “thrilling day.”
“[O]nce again, our world has changed,” he wrote on his
blog. “We are two steps closer to the goal of full equality for
[lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender] Americans.”
President Obama applauded the court’s DOMA ruling.
In a statement, Obama said he had directed Attorney
General Eric Holder “to work with other members of my
Cabinet to review all relevant federal statutes to ensure this
decision, including its implications for Federal benefits and
obligations, is implemented swiftly and smoothly.”
On CNN, Mohler said he believes marriage “is a pre-political institution that God gave to all His human creatures and
that it always has been and always must be the union of a man
and a woman. To radically transform the institution of marriage is to change the definition of what it means for humans
to exist together in community.”
In his statement, Moore told Southern Baptists and other
Christians, “Same-sex marriage is headed for your community.
This is no time for fear or outrage or politicizing. It’s a time for
forgiven sinners, like us, to do what the people of Christ have
always done. It’s time for us to point beyond our family values
and our culture wars to the cross of Christ as we say: ‘Behold,
the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.’ And
that’s good news.”
In the DOMA ruling, the Supreme Court affirmed lower
court decisions that struck down only Section 3 of the law
passed by Congress and signed by President Clinton in 1996.
Section 3 defines marriage as a heterosexual union for purposes of such matters as federal benefits and bars the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages.
DOMA “violates basic due process and equal protection
principles” applied to the federal government, Associate
Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in the majority opinion.
Kennedy seemed to indicate DOMA was “motivated by an
improper animus or purpose.” It deviates from the tradition of
the federal government recognizing state definitions of marriage and provides evidence of disapproving of a class of citizens, he said.
“The avowed purpose and practical effect of [DOMA] are to
impose a disadvantage, a separate status, and so a stigma upon
The justices “could have gone much further and struck
down the marriage amendments which are in 30 states,”...
“They did not do that. This only applies to California, and
how it’s going to be implemented we don’t yet know as we
are still combing through the opinion.”
all who enter into same-sex marriages made lawful by the
unquestioned authority of the States,” Kennedy wrote.
No states had legalized same-sex marriage when DOMA was
enacted in 1996, but 12 states and the District of Columbia
now have done so.
DOMA’s purpose is to treat gay marriages recognized by
states as “second-class marriages for purposes of federal law,”
Kennedy said.
The law is unconstitutional because “no legitimate purpose
overcomes the purpose and effect to disparage and to injure
those whom the State, by its marriage laws, sought to protect
in personhood and dignity,” he wrote.
Joining Kennedy in the majority were the four associate justices considered the most liberal on the court: Ruth Bader
Ginsburg; Stephen Breyer; Sonia Sotomayor; and Elena Kagan.
In his dissent, Associate Justice Antonin Scalia said he is certain the majority’s accusations that Congress and Clinton acted
maliciously toward same-sex couples are false. “To hurl such
accusations so casually demeans this institution”.
“[T]o defend traditional marriage is not to condemn,
demean, or humiliate those who would prefer other arrangements, any more than to defend the Constitution of the United
States is to condemn, demean, or humiliate other constitutions,” Scalia wrote.
Chief Justice John Roberts and Associate Justices Clarence
Thomas and Samuel Alito also dissented.
In its other same-sex marriage decision, the high court did
not rule on the constitutionality of a California amendment
known as Proposition 8. Instead, it ruled Prop 8’s supporters –
who appealed a lower court ruling after the governor and
attorney general refused to do so – did not have standing, or
the legal right, to make such an appeal. The justices sent the
case back to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San
Francisco and ordered it to dismiss the appeal.
In the majority opinion, Roberts said the Supreme Court
declined to break precedent in the case. “We have never
before upheld the standing of a private party to defend the constitutionality of a state statute when state officials have chosen
not to,” he wrote.
The ruling made for an unusual mixture of conservative and
liberal justices on each side. Joining Roberts in the majority
were Scalia, Ginsburg, Breyer and Kagan. Dissenting were
Kennedy, Thomas, Alito and Sotomayor.
The high court’s action left a federal judge’s opinion striking
down Prop 8 in effect.
California Gov. Jerry Brown announced later Wednesday he
had directed the Department of Public Health to “advise the
state’s counties that they must begin issuing marriage licenses”

to same-sex couples throughout the state when the Ninth
Circuit rules in response to the Supreme Court’s order.
Alliance Defending Freedom, which helped defend Prop 8,
contended, however, the amendment is still the “law of the
land in California.” It apparently reasoned the federal judge’s
ruling applies only to the district of his jurisdiction and not the
entire state.
California voters approved Proposition 8 as an amendment
to the state constitution in 2008 after the state Supreme Court
had legalized gay marriage earlier in the year. The Ninth
Circuit, however, affirmed a federal judge’s decision striking
down the amendment.
Defenders of the biblical, traditional definition of marriage
expressed some relief that the Supreme Court limited the reach
of its decisions.
The justices “could have gone much further and struck down
the marriage amendments which are in 30 states,” Family
Research Council President Tony Perkins said in the same CNN
interview with Mohler. “They did not do that. This only applies
to California, and how it’s going to be implemented we don’t yet
know as we are still combing through the opinion.”
The 12 states that have legalized same-sex marriage are
Connecticut; Delaware; Iowa; Maine; Maryland; Massachusetts; Minnesota; New Hampshire; New York; Rhode Island;
Washington and Vermont.
The DOMA decision is U.S. v. Windsor. The Prop 8 opinion
is Hollingsworth v. Perry.

End Times Preparation at
Living Waters Ranch
By Rev. Jim Jones, Blazing Grace Church, Pocatello, ID
This past weekend my bride and I attended a retreat at Living
Waters Ranch in Challis, Idaho, and the subject was end times
preparation. Whether you believe in pre, mid, or post tribulation the fact is it is going to happen and we need to be ready
when Jesus comes back. Jesus died on the cross for us and that
is a fact, but what I see “Christians” doing is leaving it at that.
We are to do all we can to further His kingdom and to equip
the saints to prepare for the battle that is already happening in
the Spiritual Realm.
Owners Christopher and Debby James gave us a blessed
weekend with much uplifting and even networking so that we
can all come together and work for God as one, just as Christ
intended. It is not a request from the Savior, but a mandate that
we go out and preach the Gospel. We as Christians have gotten
so comfortable in our nice homes and easy chairs that there is
no sense of urgency to talk to our neighbors or co-workers
about Jesus. Jesus is the author and finisher of our faith, yet we
want Him to also do all the in between stuff and somehow
supernaturally bring our family and friends to Christ. What in
the world are we thinking?
Along with preparation this weekend there was some prophesy that the valley would be filled with water and the rock
would be moved, I believe this is God’s cleansing of the valley
and preparing it to be used by the saints for the tribulation.
Well, they were right and by that I mean God was because three
days later, and that’s not a coincidence, a flash flood did exactly what God told them would happen – the valley was cleansed,
and although Christopher and his team have a lot of work to
do, God has made this valley whole. To God be the glory.

See You at the
Pole
September 25, 2013
...at 7:00 a.m. millions of students gathered at school flagpoles
all over the country...
A small group of teenagers in Burleson, Texas, came together for a DiscipleNow weekend in early 1990. They came seeking God and little did they know how powerfully He was about
to move. On Saturday night their hearts were penetrated like
never before, when they became broken before God and burdened for their friends. Compelled to pray, they drove to three
different schools that night. Not knowing exactly what to do,
they went to the school flagpoles and prayed for their friends,
schools, and leaders. Those students had no idea how God
would use their obedience.
God used what He did among those teenagers and others
who were holding similar prayer meetings at their schools to
birth a vision in the hearts of youth leaders across Texas. The
vision was that students throughout Texas would follow these
examples and meet at their school flagpoles to pray simultaneously. The challenge was named See You at the Pole™ at a
brainstorming session during a meeting of key youth leaders.
The vision was shared with 20,000 students in June 1990 at
Reunion Arena in Dallas, Texas.
Only God had envisioned how many students would step up
to the challenge. At 7:00 a.m. on September 12, 1990, more
than 45,000 teenagers met at school flagpoles in four different
states to pray before the start of school. Reports came into a
toll-free number for days after the first event.
A few months later, a group of youth ministers from all over
the country gathered together for a national conference in
Colorado. Many of them reported that their students had heard
about the prayer movement in Texas and were equally burdened for their schools. No other events had been planned, but
it was clear that students across the country would be creating
their own national day of student prayer. There was no stopping them.
On September 11, 1991, at 7:00 a.m., an estimated one million students gathered at school flagpoles all over the country.
From Boston, Massachusetts, to Los Angeles, California, from
North Dakota to the tip of Texas, students came together to pray.
Some sang, some read Scripture, but most importantly, they
prayed. Like those first students, they prayed for their schools,
for their friends, for their leaders, and for their country.
As in all great movements of prayer, See You at the Pole™
did not begin in the hearts of people. It began in the heart of
God. God used the obedience of a small group of teenagers to
ignite what has become an international movement of prayer
among young people.
Since 1991, See You at the Pole™ has grown to God-sized
proportions. Within the first few years, the movement began to
spread to other nations through missionaries from the U.S.
Now each year, more than 3 million students from all the world
participate in See You at the Pole™. Students in more than 20
countries take part. In places like Canada, Korea, Japan,
Turkey, and the Ivory Coast, students are responding to God
and taking seriously the challenge to pray.

The complete history of See You at the Pole™ is documented in a segment available on the Promo DVD. To order, please
visit our Online Store at www.syatp.com or call (817) HISPLAN (447-7526).
God is continuing to call His people to repentance and
prayer. Countless inspiring testimonies of how He has used See
You at the Pole™ to bring students to Christ and to change
lives affirm God’s power to answer those who cry out to Him in
humble dependence. Bible clubs, weekly prayer meetings, and
other ministries have begun on campuses where students participated in See You at the Pole™ (www.syatp.com).

engaging in irresponsible hermeneutics...
Discernment Review
By Pastor Jordan Hall, Fellowship Baptist Church, Sidney, Montana
A few weeks ago, [professed] Christian and author, Rachel
Held-Evans, tweeted out an Amazon link to one of my recent
books as a cause for scorn, after which dozens of her followers heaped insult after insult upon my Twitter feed. Granted,
the title of my book is meant to cause a stir, but the content is
rather tame – a children’s allegory designed to teach the
Doctrines of Grace from a classically Reformed perspective. It
turns out that Held-Evans has quite a few Universalists in her
following, and quite a few more that freely fling out vulgarities
and expletives in the name of religion. What astounded me was
not that those from an opposing side of the salvation debate
within evangelical Christianity took issue with my book (there’s
been much debate in recent years on the topic of election and
most of it has been healthy), but that so many non-believers
religiously follow Held-Evans on Twitter, hold her in celebrity
status, and champion her cause.
Held-Evans calls herself an evangelical, which is intended to
give her more credibility when picking apart Christian essentials or engaging in irresponsible hermeneutics. One can hardly apply the term ‘evangelical’ to themselves if they – as HeldEvans – say they have stopped believing in “the Bible’s exclusive authority, inerrancy, perspicuity, and internal consistency.”
Almost every definition of “evangelical” ever floated around
theological circles as valid would include a belief in the
authority and inerrancy of Scripture. Furthermore, Held-Evans
seems to deny exclusivism (that salvation can be found in
Christ alone) on her website, making one wonder what exactly the evangel is in her evangelism. It’s also no wonder that so
many of her followers are Universalists (those who believe all
will be saved regardless of a confessed faith in Christ), atheists,
or agnostics. It seems that her supposedly “Christian” career
does more to excite non-believers than to edify the saints.
A Year of Biblical Womanhood is Held-Evan’s attempt at
discrediting the Holy Scripture by mocking it through an
absurd hermeneutic of applying Levitical Laws given to the
Nation of Israel (outside their context) to the New Testament
era and without any real explanation of why these laws existed
in the first place. To build this fallacy straw man, Held-Evans
sets about following (sort of) Levitical commands for a year,
pointing out the main thesis of the book – that Christians are
hypocritical for following some of God’s decrees concerning
“Biblical womanhood” and not all of them.
Held-Evans made her own clothes, grew out her hair, and
camped outside her house when menstruating. Her desired
effect was to make the Biblically-ignorant (few believers with a
quasi-serious grasp of the Old and New Testament would fall
for this tactic) believe the Scripture’s prescription for female
godliness is unreasonable and that no Christian can truly
uphold standards that still apply in a post-resurrection world.
The problem with Held-Evans’ approach in A Year of
Biblical Womanhood (aside from its devious intentions of
unraveling a thoroughly Biblical worldview in respect to gender and marriage) is that the main thesis could easily be filleted by an elementary understanding of the design, purpose, and
scope of Levitical law. Instead of providing this lesson, HeldEvans uses the common misunderstandings concerning Old
Testament law to bait nonbelievers and the Biblically unlearned
into discounting virtually anything the Scripture says about the
honored place of women and their unique roles within marriage, church, and culture.
Old Testament law is recognized by almost any Bible scholar as being divided into three categories; moral, civil, and ceremonial. Moral laws – like the Ten Commandments – remain
enforced, if not in the letter, certainly in spirit. God’s Moral Law
demonstrates his character and holy nature. For example, not
stealing, committing adultery, or not murdering someone is
still revelatory of God’s moral requirement of men. The Civil
Law imposed on the nation of Israel dealt specifically with the
interaction of ancient Israelites toward one another, both
neighbor to neighbor and individual toward society (or society toward individual).
For example, having a rail on your roof obviously pertained
to the houses of the day that were flat and served as patios for
living during warmer seasons. Mandating that someone cover
a pit or hole on their property so their neighbors don’t accidentally fall into them teach a basic concept of property liability that the nation of Israel (still of theocracy at this point)
needed to have. These laws are not in force today, but do serve
as principles to follow when applicable. For example, we
should consider the law about covering a pit for our neighbor’s
safety when deciding whether or not to put a safety fence
around our pool if our neighbors have small children.
Ceremonial laws, however (which seem to be the favorite fodder for Held-Evans), have been fulfilled in Christ and we are
under no obligation to follow them. A new student of the Bible
could easily ascertain that these laws are not in force – laws
from circumcision to dietary restrictions.
What would have been helpful for those looking to pick
apart or mock the Holy Scriptures would have been an even
half-hearted attempt to explain the existence of these ceremonial laws. Concerning the feasts, these have been fulfilled in
Christ and served the purpose of pointing to the coming
Messiah. In the Gospel of John, for example, we see fleshed out
the ways that the Festival of Tents was pointing toward the
Christ who came and dwelt among man. We can see how the
Passover clearly shows Christ as the Passover Lamb who has
been killed so that death would pass over us and so that we can
escape the bondage of sin. The laws concerning cleanliness
are clearly teaching that there is such thing as uncleanness
before God that hinders our coming to Him that can be
declared clean by a priest, pointing to the High Priest who
would make all things (and all believing people) clean.
If what people want is an honest look at Scripture, we
should rightly embrace it even if they are hostile toward it.
Masquerading as a Christian who views the Bible as holy
while systematically abusing it, however, is neither helpful nor
honest.

SCRIPTURE
“They stood in their place according to their custom, according to the Law of Moses the man of God; the priests
sprinkled the blood received from the hand of the Levites. For there were many in the assembly who had not sanctified themselves; therefore the Levites had charge of the slaughter of the Passover lambs for everyone who was
not clean, to sanctify them to the Lord. For a multitude of the people, many from Ephraim, Manasseh, Issachar,
and Zebulun, had not cleansed themselves, yet they ate the Passover contrary to what was written. But Hezekiah
prayed for them, saying, “May the good Lord provide atonement for everyone” – 2 Chronicles 30:16-18 New King James Version

You say you will never forget where you were when
you heard the news on September 11, 2001. Neither
will I.
I was on the 110th floor in a smoke filled room with
a man who called his wife to say “Good-Bye.” I held his
fingers steady as he dialed. I gave him the peace to say,
“Honey, I am not going to make it, but it is OK. I am
ready to go.”
I was with his wife when he called as she fed breakfast to their children. I held her up as she tried to understand his words and as she realized he wasn’t coming
home that night.
I was in the stairwell of the 23rd floor when a woman
cried out to Me for help. “I have been knocking on the
door of your heart for 50 years!” I said. “Of course I will
show you the way home – only believe in Me now.”
I was at the base of the building with the Priest ministering to the injured and devastated souls. I took him
home to tend to his flock in Heaven. He heard my voice
and answered.
I was on all four of those planes, in every seat, with
every prayer. I was with the crew as they were overtaken. I was in the very hearts of the believers there, comforting and assuring them that their faith has saved
them.
I was in Texas, Virginia, California, Michigan, and
Afghanistan.
I was standing next to you when you heard the terrible news. Did you sense Me?
I want you to know that I saw every face. I knew
every name – though not all knew Me. Some met Me for
the first time on the 86th floor.
Some sought Me with their last breath. Some couldn’t
hear Me calling to them through the smoke and flames;

Dear Senator [Representative]:
As leaders charged with the responsibility of defending religious liberty on behalf of our respective organizations, we join together to urge all members of
Congress to support passage of H.R. 940 and S. 1204,
the Health Care Conscience Rights Act of 2013. This bill
would address threats to religious freedom and rights
of conscience that have become particularly grave in
the field of health care. As many people are being
forced – and many others will soon be forced – to
either follow what the government compels or suffer
for their faith, now is the time to pass legislation that
protects our God-given freedom.
One challenge that demands prompt attention is the
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ mandate for almost all private health plans to cover sterilization for women and all FDA-approved “contraceptive”
drugs and devices, including those which can cause an
early abortion, as well as related “education and counseling.” Dozens of lawsuits have been filed against this
mandate based on moral or religious objections by
people of faith, including some from our respective
faith communities. Despite assurances to the contrary,
HHS’s accommodations to protect the rights of religious freedom and conscience under the mandate
remain inadequate. Consequently, countless non-profit
and for-profit organizations must either obey the government’s mandate in violation of their beliefs, or follow their consciences and incur massive fines or the
loss of their ministry. This is unacceptable.
Both our denominations value God’s gift of procreation. We agree that it is wrong to promote drugs and
devices that destroy a newly conceived human life at
any stage, as items mandated by this policy can do. We
agree that unmarried minors must not be subjected to
government-mandated “counseling” on sex and birth
control without their parents’ knowledge or over their
objections, as proposed by this mandate. Further, we
agree that the religious beliefs of our faith communities
and others must not be suppressed or ignored by a
government supposedly committed to protect the religious freedom of all.
Due to deficiencies in existing federal conscience
laws, even Americans’ right to serve the sick and needy
without violating their religious convictions on human
life is not secure. Health professionals continue to face
pressures and threats to take part in the destruction of
innocent life. Yet under current law, women and men in
the health professions do not even have a right to go to
court to defend their own God-given rights of conscience. Enforcement is left entirely to HHS, which in
recent years has become not the solution, but part of
the problem. The Health Care Conscience Rights Act
would address these serious problems in ways consistent with our federal government’s long history of
bipartisan consensus on respect for rights of conscience.
While Catholics and Southern Baptists espouse different theological views, we are united by the belief that
Congress must act to help preserve our freedom of religion and conscience. We urge you to do all that you
can to ensure prompt enactment of this much-needed
legislation.

Religious Liberties Update –
As told to IMCNews
Michael S. Oswald, J.D., Boise, Idaho
A Reminder of the Source of Our Religious Liberties
Outcomes of the
“Marriage Cases” at the
U.S. Supreme Court
The Supreme Court of the
U. S. (“SCOTUS”) handed down its eagerly-anticipated decisions dealing with the definition of marriage.
The good news is that SCOTUS did not simply invent a
Constitutional right to same-sex marriage, in the way it invented a right to abortion in the case of Roe v. Wade.
The bad news (Part One) is that in the case of United States
v. Windsor, the court struck down Section 3 of Defense of
Marriage Act (“DOMA”), which defines marriage as the union
of one man and one woman for purposes of all federal laws.
The court found that the Federal government lacked a rational
basis for establishing a uniform Federal definition of marriage,
and that animosity toward same-sex couples must have been
the motivation behind DOMA.
The bad news (Part Two) is that in the case of Hollingsworth
v. Perry, SCOTUS ruled that the citizens who had initiated
California’s Proposition 8 (amending the CA Constitution to
define marriage as between one man and one woman) lacked
the legal standing to even be in court defending Prop 8. The
citizens had been providing the defense from the trial court all
the way to SCOTUS because California’s elected officials had
refused to do their jobs and defend Prop 8 when it was challenged. The ruling in the Federal District Court for the
Northern District of CA now has the effect of legalizing samesex marriage in Northern CA. It is unclear what the law is in the
rest of the state.
Watch for emboldened activists to increase their use of antidiscrimination laws to deprive believers of their right not to get
involved in same-sex marriage. There are already cases against
a Christian photographer who said she preferred not to attend
and photograph a same-sex commitment ceremony, and the
Christian owners of a bed and breakfast inn who believe it is
wrong to provide rooms for unmarried couples.
The Alliance Defending Freedom (“ADF”) and the Pacific
Justice Institute (“PJI”) are both public interest law firms that
stand ready to provide, at no charge, legal representation to
believers who find themselves ensnared in such matters.
Followers of Jesus will need to be vigilant in detecting and
reporting to ADF or PJI any instances of His followers being
sued or prosecuted for refusing to participate in same-sex
marriages or any other conduct that violates His law.
Believers must also remain engaged in the arena of public
policy. God designed humans and human institutions. He
knows what is best for us, and He gave us the instructions in
The Bible. We must insist on policies that uphold these “best
practices for living.” We must also resist efforts to redefine the
First Amendment. “Freedom of worship” is a sleight-of-hand
phrase used by those who wish to rule God and God’s people
out of the public square. The First Amendment protects our
free exercise of religion, which means being able to live our
faith whenever and wherever we are. Accept nothing less!
In its landmark opinion yesterday, the 10th Circuit majority
found that “no one” – not even the government – “disputes the
sincerity of Hobby Lobby’s religious beliefs.” The court ruled
that denying them the protection of federal law just because
they are a profit-making business “would conflict with the
Supreme Court’s free exercise precedent.”
Today, following the 10th Circuit ruling, the trial court granted Hobby Lobby a temporary restraining order against the HHS
mandate. Further proceedings are scheduled for July 19, 2013,
in Oklahoma City.

Hobby Lobby Gets 11th Hour Victory
Against the HHS Mandate
Lost in all the publicity about the marriage cases was the
wonderful news that Hobby Lobby won a huge victory. From
the June 28, 2013 news release issued by The Becket Fund for
Religious Liberty:
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, for the first time, a federal court
has ordered the government not to enforce the HHS abortiondrug mandate against Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. The ruling
comes just one day after a dramatic 168-page opinion from the
en banc 10th Circuit recognizing that business owners have
religious liberty rights. This was the first definitive federal
appellate ruling against the HHS mandate.
“Hobby Lobby and the Green family faced the terrible choice
of violating their faith or paying massive fines starting this
Monday morning,” said Kyle Duncan, General Counsel with the
Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, who represents Hobby
Lobby. “We are delighted that both the 10th Circuit and the district court have spared them from this unjust burden on their
religious freedom.”

The Night I
Became a Carrot
by Faye Higbee, Post Falls, Idaho
I was seriously convinced
that Christians were vegetables. After all, they believed
that God talked to them. Sure,
fools, go ahead and believe
myths. As a member of
MENSA, I took my own intelligence seriously. I was smart
and knew it. God giggled,
slapped Gabriel on the shoulder and watched as His setup
moved forward.
I worked at a local police
department. After my shift on
Wednesday evenings we had a
tradition of going out for
“Two for One” drinks at a bar
across the street from our
workplace. That particular
night I ordered only two
drinks… and got a total of
four. It’s how to get blotto in
half the time.
I left early and drove home.
(Yes, you say, pretty stupid for
a smart person). I stumbled
up the stairs and plopped into
bed in a drunken stupor. At
around 10:30 p.m. the phone
rang. Since in those days the
phone was downstairs rather
than conveniently beside my
bed, I hopped out and started
to run down to answer it.
Kathunk, kathunk, kathunk. I
hit the top step and whacked
into every step in the entire
flight until coming to a stop in
a heap at the bottom. I wasn’t
a great candidate for ballet
dancing at that moment.
My husband returned
home from work about an
hour later, and I was still sitting on the floor in agony. He
helped me to the car and we
drove to the hospital.
Fortunately, nothing was broken, but both legs were
severely sprained and beginning to turn black and blue.
They told me not to go to
work for at least a week so
that the sprains would heal.
The next couple of days
were spent with my legs
propped up on the hassock in
the living room. One evening
the doorbell rang, and a lady
I knew as the wife of a local
FBI agent stood there with a
stack of books. She was
always smiling, friendly,
and… one of those Christian
“vegetables.” She was charming, but she made me a little
nervous with that “happiness”
routine.
I invited her in and we had
a warm conversation. She
went over the books with me,
even some that she had written. Those looked like good
material for poems. But I kept
a wary distance, lest she try to
recruit me into her vegetable
garden.
After she left, I piled the
books on the coffee table and
flipped on the television. My
favorite shows were on that
night and I didn’t want to miss
them. As I watched the TV, I
absent mindedly picked up a
book called “Prison to
Praise” by Merlin Carothers.
In the blink of an eye I was
hooked. The television faded
into the background. Then I
picked up another book,
“Face Up with a Miracle” by
Don Basham. He wrote that
God had a plan for everyone.
The words snagged my
heart so deeply that I found
myself speaking to the air.
“Do You have room for me in
Your plan?” I asked. Instantly
a bright golden Light flooded
my living room. My toy poodle panicked, ran to the
opposite corner of the room
and sat there trembling. I was
awestruck by that Light.
As His Light broke through
the clouds of my life, I distinctly heard these words.
“Yes, I have room for you. I
love you.”
I wept and sang at the same
time as God’s love flooded my
being. For the rest of the
evening I worshiped, realizing
that my life had been instantly
transformed. The lady who
brought me the books
became a “heart friend.”
Over the years we have both
been through many fires, now
nearly 35 years and counting.
It was the night I became a
carrot in the vegetable garden
of God, a night that changed
my heart forever. I have never
been the same since.

NEWS BRIEFS
from around the Web
Parents, students tired of prayer
being pushed aside
by Bob Kellogg American Family News/OneNewsNow.com
Present and past football players at a Michigan high
school are outraged that team members can no longer
participate in voluntary prayer at the games.
Bloomfield Hills School District Superintendent Rob
Glass quickly caved after receiving a complaint from a
parent and banned players from praying publicly after
the games.
But as Mat Staver of the Liberty Counsel points out,
such prayers are protected by the Constitution.
“Interestingly, a number of years ago there were
Mat Staver
some federal guidelines with regards to religious
expression in public schools that were issued," he notes. "It also clearly states that
this is a right that students enjoy and must be protected and respected by school
authorities.”
The Liberty Counsel founder believes many parents and students are tired of the
barrage of prayer bans in schools across the country, and many are not going to
stand for it anymore.
“There’s a time that ultimately comes where a line is crossed, enough is enough,
and we have to push back,” he asserts. “That’s what our founders did, that’s what
we need to do today, and I think that’s what we’re seeing across the country.”
He adds that Liberty Counsel, a non-profit legal organization advancing religious
freedom, is ready, willing and able to represent Bloomfield Hills students or students
at any other school where school officials have crossed the line regarding religious
rights.
Advice columnist battling 'disturbing
trend' toward censorship
by Russ Jones OneNewsNow.com
Noted family therapist, author, and columnist John
Rosemond says his free-speech rights are being violated by a
government agency in Kentucky that asserts he is breaking the
law when his columns are published in newspapers in that state.
Since 1971, Rosemond has worked with families, children,
and parents in the field of family psychology, speaking at local
retreats, producing video and DVD series, and penning 11 bestJohn Rosemond
selling parenting books along the way.
And. since 1976, his nationally syndicated parenting column, which currently
appears weekly in more than 200 newspapers across the U.S., has addressed such
hot-button topics as spanking, children's rights, blended families, and home schooling. It is the longest-running, single-author advice column in the country.
But the popular columnist has received a cease-and-desist order from Kentucky
Attorney General Jack Conway who, along with the Kentucky Board of Examiners of
Psychology, received a complaint in May 2013 from a retired psychologist about
Rosemond's advice column. “Stop publishing your advice column in the Bluegrass
State or face fines and jail,” the letter demanded.
The attorney general and the licensing board argue that Rosemond's column constitutes the “unlicensed practice of psychology” in Kentucky when it appears in a
state-based newspaper.
Paul Sherman is an attorney with The Institute for Justice,
which is representing Rosemond.
“This is part of a disturbing national trend in which occupational licensing boards have decided that the First Amendment
just doesn’t apply to them,” he tells OneNewsNow. “These
boards are the new censors; they are aggressive, and they’re
cracking down on speech across the country.”
The attorney is in the process of filing a temporary restraining order and a preliminary injunction allowing his client to conPaul Sherman
tinue writing his column during the lawsuit.
“The consequences of holding that [such] advice is not protected by the First
Amendment are extraordinary,” Sherman explains. “It would allow the government
to arrest Dear Abby or throw Dr. Phil in jail – that simply can’t be the law. Advice
columns are a form of speech, and they are fully protected by the First Amendment.”
Sherman adds that Rosemond’s challenge addresses one of the most important
unsettled questions in First Amendment law: Can the government use occupationallicensing laws to trump free speech?
Updates on the case are available on the Institute for Justice website.

What is Creationism?
(Honoring Our Awesome God – Creator and Sustainer)
Creationism is nothing new – it is simply the Biblical theology about origins. Creationism is simply emphasizing what the
Bible says about who God is as Creator and what the Bible
teaches about creation without any compromise with the devious doctrines of macro-evolutionism that have developed in
the past one hundred fifty years, since Charles Darwin’s book,
The Origin of Species, was published in 1859 and popularized
after that. So in essence, creationism is the restoration of
Biblical doctrine about God as Creator and sustainer of the
entire universe!
The doctrine of Creation needs to be restored to its prominent place in Biblical theology because some well-intentioned,
but misguided Christian leaders, including theologians and scientists, have accepted the propaganda of evolutionists who
teach that the earth is billions of years old and evolution is a
fact.
Whether the compromised position is called theistic evolution, progressive creation, the gap theory, or anything else, if
they try to shove millions or billions of years into the text of
Genesis, it is not Biblical theology. Any compromise with evolutionism is destructive to Biblical theology and devastating to
Biblical faith.
The primary problem with evolutionists and compromisers
is not that they are stupid – most are highly intelligent, but that
they firmly believe they “know” so many things that are not so!
They “know” too much that is not Biblically or scientifically
sound!
The basic issue is not complex. The philosophy of evolutionism traces back to the Greek philosophers 300-400 B.C., with
possible roots in Hinduism, so it is definitely a pagan philosophy with some religious similarities to Hinduism. (Hindus
believe in Karma which is the evolution of the soul through
many lifetimes in order to become better and better). The doctrine of long ages of time (now billions of years) is essential to
evolutionism and on this issue they will not compromise
because, as stated by evolutionist George Wald, “Time is in fact
the hero of the plot... given so much time the ‘impossible’
becomes possible, the possible probable and the probable virtually certain. One has only to wait: time itself performs miracles.” (George Wald, The Origin of Life, Physics and
Chemistry of Life, 1955, p. 12).
Later, Carl Sagan wrote: “The secrets of evolution are death
and time – the deaths of enormous numbers of life forms that
were imperfectly adapted to the environment; and time for a
long succession of small mutations that were by accident adaptive, time for the slow accumulation of patterns of favorable
mutations.” (Carl Sagan, Cosmos, 1980, p. 30)
As you can plainly see from these quotations, deep time plus
chance plus death are the gods of evolutionism. Theistic compromisers say “no” to chance and materialism but “yes” to
deep time and death, so they reject two of the gods of evolutionism but accept two others. It is the same fatal fallacy the
Israelites fell into when they compromised with the pagan religions around them.“They worshiped Jehovah and served other
gods.” Kenneth Beckman said, “When you compromise you
become part of the problem you once sought to solve.” How
true!
Compromised positions that accept evolutionism’s time
table of billions of years are not Creationism! They are not
Biblical theology! Why not? Because our almighty, awesome
Creator is not some bumbling idiot who takes millions or billions of years of trial and error to do a job! When Authority
speaks, things happen –
instantly! Consider these pertinent, potent passages from
the Word of God:
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the
earth. The earth was without
form, and void; and darkness
was on the face of the deep.
And the Spirit of God was
hovering over the face of the
waters. Then God said, “Let
there be light”; and there was

It is a sad fact that some unbelievers are more perceptive

It is not Religion...
It is Relationship!
By Cristy Brown, Ucon, Idaho
As a servant of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ I am in
awe of the love and compassion I and my family have come to
know through our relationship and walk with Our Father who
is in Heaven.
I am a 38-year-old wife of a wonderful husband and mother of two beautiful children, all of whom I love so dearly. My
husband and I have been together for twenty years and married for fifteen. As very young adults we decided to 'walk for
a while' before we got married. We had both seen and lived
with divorce and sadly ending relationships and it seemed a
good idea to make sure we were really willing to spend the
rest of our lives together before we shared the sacred vows of
marriage with each other. We then waited ten years before we
had children, we are slow movers – it sure gave us time to
grow and learn though. It turns out God had great plans for
us and our sweet children.
I grew up having very confusing mixed messages about
God. My mom’s family are Jehovah Witnesses and my dad’s
family are born-again Christians. I attended the Jehovah
Witness meetings for most of my young life and I went to a
LDS church with some friends I had known. Talk about a big
difference in beliefs and teachings, luckily I was very blessed
with a mom who loves me and let me experience both. I was
very disinterested in God, thinking He was some very distant...
something, I really did not know.
I was certainly never aware of how close He was to me and
how He longed for me to know His Love and Grace. I could
not understand how God would deprive me and my siblings
from celebrating our birthdays, Thanksgiving, and The Birth
of Christ? I wondered why we had a memorial on Easter when
others were celebrating, and why do they pass around juice
and bread and no one can eat or drink? Needless to say I was
confused.
Thank God my Grandma from my dad’s side found The
Light. She was raised very strict Catholic and later became
Lutheran and found her way to being a ‘born again’ Christian.
My mom worked a lot to support four children and she was
usually working on holidays. My dad took the opportunities
to celebrate holidays with his family and us kids. We would
have big parties with that side of the family and we loved it.
When I was about ten I went to a Christmas party with my
Grandma at the Shilo Christian Church. I was ecstatic to see
how everyone there was so friendly and loving. They were
Praising The Lord and celebrating with food and laughter and
everyone was praying with each other. It was Awesome. I went
back with her every chance I got. I started realizing the God I
wanted to serve was the One whom His children celebrated.
Bozeman, Montana
As I grew older I started going out with my friends to parties and heavy metal concerts, there was usually drugs and
alcohol involved. I got myself in some pretty dumb predicaments with the choices I was making and suffered with the
consequences. Thank God I had so many people praying for
me, because I was not. I had then known God, but had not yet
really acknowledged Him as my Lord and Savior nor as my
Loving Father.
When I was eighteen my brother fell off a cliff and almost
died, then when I was nineteen my dad passed away from
heart failure. He was only fourty-seven. My brother, sisters
and I were still pretty young as well. It was devastating to all
of us. The next month my uncle, who was like my second dad,
passed away, and then the next month two of our friends were
murdered.
I started realizing that life was very short and unpredictable. I decided maybe it was time to change some things
in my life and one of those things was my thoughts I had about
life and death. Where were my loved ones? What happens
after the death of this life? Would I see them again? What did
I have to do to get to Heaven?
When I was twenty-three my sisters invited me to go to
church with them. I was very surprised when I ended up at
The Shilo Church that my Grandma took me to as a child. It
was exciting to be back there after all of those years. When
they put the words to the song up on the screen and everyone
started sing, I started bawling. The tears of joy would not stop,
I cried the whole service. I knew I was home, it was not just
the building, it was home in Jesus. I never wanted to be without Him again.
I did not end up at the Shilo again, but my friend and I
started attending Calvary Chapel. The first Sunday my daughter and I came to worship there I was awed again by God, my
dad’s entire family was going to services there. My aunt
almost cried when she saw us there. She affirmed that she had
never stopped praying for my family’s salvation. And there we
were, celebrating with family once again. Now we just needed
my husband to start coming with us.
He is a wonderful man, a very loving and kind father and
husband. I prayed with the Pastor and his wife for one day to
have our family together in church, and in Christ. Five years
later my husband, our two children and I got baptized together. One pool, one family, in one God.
I hope I never lose the faith I have grown to have in a wonderful, loving, compassionate, and caring Father. I am very
happy that my family never stopped praying for me and my
Father in Heaven never gave up on bringing me to Him.

Prayer Requests: SE Asia
Please continue to pray for Patrick and his friend as they
travel in an extremely closed country in SE Asia. Please continue to pray for Divine Appointments and that they will minister
the love of God to those they come in contact with.
Please pray for our contact in the red-light district. She has
been experiencing a great deal of spiritual opposition to the
work she has been doing and some outright attacks. This week
she was riding her bike home after a wonderful outreach
where many were open to the Gospel. On her way home she
was struck from behind and was knocked out and taken to the
hospital. She was released with injuries to her head and her
hand. She will be having an MRI to make sure she will be okay.
She is doing better, but still has pain. Please keep her covered
in your prayers. The enemy does not like the work she is doing
as it is directly attacking territory in his control. Please pray for
God's strength, healing and protection to surround this faithful
servant of the King!
Please continue to pray for our contact who was diagnosed
with liver cancer. Pray for God's peace and comfort to surround her and her family. Pray His strength will fill her, along
with His healing power and that she will be able to continue in
the work the Lord has given her! Please pray she will experience a deep and abiding sense of His presence with her during this difficult time.
Please continue to pray for Saeed Abedini who remains in
prison in Iran. We are approaching one year that he has been
in prison and away from his family. Pray for his safe return
home to them soon! Please pray God will be glorified by the
things Saeed has had to suffer and endure while he is in prison.
May His Word go forth in power in Evin prison through His
servants there!
Current Needs:
Travelers with medical/dental experience – VBB will be taking a team to the refugee camps in December that will be
focusing on the medical needs in the camps. We are in need of
travelers with medical experience. There is a special need for
people with dental experience. The medical and dental needs
in the camps are great. This is a wonderful outreach opportunity by meeting these physical needs. If you have medical or
dental experience, please pray about joining the team that will
visit the camps in December!
Support for Refugees:
There are three projects in the refugee camps needing regular support. One is located within the largest Karen IDP camp
inside Burma housing more than 4,000 displaced Karen. The
home cares for 40 children who have been orphaned, abandoned or taken in because a single parent was unable to provide for them. The second home is located inside Thailand
deep in the jungle caring for 50 children. These homes need
as little as $10 per child per month to provide a safe Christian
home for these children to grow in the ways of the Lord. The
third project we have committed to helping on a monthly basis
provides education, medical and hygiene supplies as well as
Bible lessons to about 120 children. Please pray about supporting these precious kids on a regular basis.
Thank you for your faithful prayers and support!
God Bless You! Patrick and VBB Staff

The “Lukewarm” Church –
A perspective commentary on today’s
Christian Church
By Michael A. Hernandez, Aurora, Colorado
Several years ago early in my Christian walk; I read 2
Timothy 3 which headlines in my bible, “The Dangers of the
Last Days.” At the time, I can remember feeling appalled. Call
it my naiveté as a 21 year old optimist or the fact that I believed
there were too many good people in the world who would
surely never become this type of generation. Either way, that
was 23 years ago and here we are today. Does this biblical
warning not fit today’s society?
“You should know this, Timothy that in the last days
there will be very difficult times. For people will love only
themselves and their money. They will be boastful and
proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and
ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be
unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have
no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good.
They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with
pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them
godly. Stay away from people like that.” – 2 Timothy 3:1-5 –
NLT.
A WIIFM Body
Have we become a “What’s In It for Me” Body of Christ?
Consider the motivation for church attendance in today’s society. Is there such thing now as a Christian-Secular blend? From
a Christian-Secular blended perspective, an ideal Christian
church service should be a one day tribute to God to convene
with fellow believers leaving service, either convicted or
encouraged, but not necessarily motivated enough to make a
difference beyond convenience. How easy is it then for one to
(regularly) attend service out of a spiritual social obligation…
i.e. being seen or even serving with other (complacent) believers complete with the usual church jargon?
Consider verbiage not so typically used in the prior generation… “mega churches, prosperity preaching,” and all the
other social terms that “tolerantly describe” the issues and
reputation of the church. With the likes of media exposure and
instant internet access to international news, it’s no wonder
why the church has the social stigma it does by a liberal society finding fault and motive in every act and church perspective. The question however is “what is the church’s perspective
and what is its motive? If we can no longer tell the difference,
then it’s no wonder 2 Timothy 3 reads as a foretold generation.
Rightly so.

Led by the Spirit or led by the masses?
Is the church doing the best they can then to meet the
needs of its body in a range as wide as possible? Some pastors readily admit that their messages are neither too hot nor
too cold keeping it within an acceptable range of understanding. As a result, what of those who require more “meat”
in our messages depending on the intimacy of their walk?
Subsequently, is it possible then to blur spiritual growth with
social obedience and expectation?
It’s no wonder then how the distinct distraction between
our souls and our savior is… ourselves. But we as people
prone to minimize, justify and blame, reason away truth.
After all, we say to ourselves, “thank God we are not where
we used to be!” But does that necessarily equate to yielding
fruit? That is, could the church then be lukewarm during a
time when the harvest is as ripe as it’s ever been; the world
needing Jesus Christ and His truth more than ever before
while the church may be as complacent as it has ever been?
I am blessed to have two or three brothers in the Lord I
can call upon during my own spiritual weaknesses or when I
feel the need for prayer. I find the importance of this type of
fellowship crucial in today’s Christian society. Jesus himself
sent out his disciples in two, lest one fall the other should
help him up.
Do we as the body of Christ, have these types of relationships of accountability beyond Sunday morning feel good
greetings and salutations? Might our spiritual best friends
and relationships of positive accountability be the very person we ignore on Sunday mornings or might they be at a
bible study we have chosen not to attend for one reason or
another?
And so I encourage you to engage within today’s society by
first and foremost keeping yourself prayed up and accountable within the body of Christ. Pray that the Holy Spirit would
reveal your spiritual giftings and if you are already aware of
these giftings, consider prayerfully how you may be a part of
spreading the truth of God’s message and the hope God has
for each and every one of us.
God bless you my brothers and sisters. Let us keep each
other in prayer as well as ourselves as we diligently seek His
will as vessels unto His honor.

It’s easy to forget all that we have to be thankful for. It’s
also easy to forget that the privileges we have as United States
citizens should never be taken for granted. We are free to
worship and to live as we do because the Lord blessed our
country; and continues to bless us, not because we are
mighty in our own right.
The God and Country Festival began 47 years ago as a
small rally in the park, local churches joined on the
Wednesday before the 4th to praise the Lord and celebrate
this great country. Since then, the festival has grown to host a
typical crowd of more than 12,000 people.
This old fashioned, patriotic and religious Festival places
emphasis on the words and ideals of our nation’s founders,
with special recognition given to our military and the men
and women who currently serve and to those who gave their
lives to free this country and keep it free. The event also provides one of the largest fireworks shows in the Treasure
Valley.
Ministry booths have been an important part of the Festival
since it moved from the park in Nampa to the Idaho Center
in 2000. Organizations such as AWANA, Boise Rescue Mission
and Mission Aviation Fellowship provide information and
assistance to Festival attendees.
The theme of this year’s festival, Celebrate Idaho, honored
Idaho’s 150th year as a territory. Entertainment for this year’s
event was chosen from many talented local artists, and
included the Daniel Kelly Band, A Rotterdam November,
Esterlyn, Compel, Scott Riggin and headliner Ryan Stevenson.

Is Islam now the ‘mostfavored’ religion?
By Chad Groening (OneNewsNow.com)
A pro-family spokesman says the recent revelation that the
FBI is no longer conducting surveillance of mosques is just
another indication that the Obama administration has given
Islam
“mostfavored status.”
I n v e s t o r ’s
Business Daily
recently reported
that
since
October 2011,
mosques have
been off-limits to
American Family Association's Bryan Fischer
the FBI, with no
more surveillance or undercover sting operations allowed
without high-level approval from a special oversight body at
the Justice Department dubbed the “Sensitive Operations
Review Committee.” The panel was reportedly set up following
complaints from Muslims about sting operations conducted by
the FBI, which proved very effective in disrupting dozens of
Islamic terror plots.
In an earlier interview with OneNewsNow, Laurie CardozaMoore with Proclaiming Justice to the Nations implied
President Obama – through his actions and his policies –
demonstrates a decided favoritism toward the Islamic faith and
its adherents. Bryan Fischer, director of issues analysis at the
American Family Association, agrees.
“We’re at a place now under this administration where
Islam has really been granted a most-favored status among all
the religions of the world,” says the AFA spokesman. “There’s
no question that this president has profound sympathies for
the Muslim faith and seems to have at the same time a real
antipathy for Christianity.”
Fischer believes the White House may feel a backlash from
imposing what some critics perceive as another act of political
correctness.
“I think the American people have reached a saturation
point with scandal, with anti-Christian hostility [and with] this
ObamaCare monstrosity [which is] going into full effect next
January,” he states. “And every member of [the House] has to
stand for re-election in November of 2014 – and I believe a lot
of liberals are shaking in their boots right now.”

Mikel Fuller:
A Life of
Redemption
Mikel and his wife, Marisela, still actively engage with Denver Rescue
Mission all the way from Peru. We are excited about their new adventures!
I walked into The Crossing in October 2009. After being
there for a month, I was ready to leave. I was sober from drugs
and alcohol and I was tired of people making my schedule for
me and telling me what to do. I felt that a month was all the
time I needed to sober up, and that drugs and alcohol were my
only problem. Then my best friend and roommate, Josh Rall,
who has since then passed away, came to visit me. I told him
that I was ready to leave and he asked me to give it another two
months. His exact words were, “Give it another month, maybe
even two.” So I stayed.
Three days later Christ spoke to me. He said “Mikel, it’s not
the drugs, alcohol, sex, or always traveling trying to find something that will fill that bottomless cup. It’s that you don’t have
Me in your life!”
It was so powerful that I got on my knees and asked God to
forgive me for all that I had done: for the guilt and shame that
I was carrying around for not taking care of my kids, not
accomplishing any of my goals, being deceitful, and being a
thief. Whatever it was, I had done it or was trying to do it. That
is what the enemy wants to do: destroy us. I asked God for forgiveness and He did. I felt Him take that weight that I was carrying around for over 20 years and lift it off of my shoulders.
I graduated the New Life Program (NLP) in July 2011, and I
moved back to downtown Denver. But God had different plans
for me. I now live in Chiclayo, Peru. I am married to a beautiful young lady whom I’ve known for almost 12 years and we
are expecting our first child. I’m working at two universities,
teaching English. We are also working on opening a non-profit restaurant that will help feed orphans and widows.
Many people have asked themselves, “Why am I here?” God
blessed us with that answer. We are here to spread that good
news to as many people as possible and to serve. The Lord has
blessed me so much and it all started when I walked through
The Crossing’s doors. I want to thank so many people that
helped me there. I pray that the Lord blesses them with
strength, courage, patience and endurance.

I joined the New Life

many areas of my life. One of
the most important areas is
my spiritual walk with Jesus
Christ. Since I was six or

my parents. Growing up in
the church was great. I
always enjoyed the praying
and worshipping.
But when I turned 21 I
moved out and got my own

began to fall into the partying

INTERMOUNTAIN RESCUE MISSION TESTIMONIES
Spotlight Testimony
My name is Brandon Butler and this is the story of my life:
how a one-time missionary, college graduate and middle school
teacher became a homeless heroin addict and how my life
changed at the Rescue Mission of Salt Lake.
Finding Comfort in Drugs
As a kid, I wasn't overly nerdy or awkward, but I was unusual enough (I liked to read and play music instead of sports and
video games) that I was picked on all through elementary
school. I hated it and loathed my experience in school.
Growing up in the Salt Lake Valley, my parents supported me
and cared for me, but it hurt me that many of the people who
bullied me were the same kids I went to church with on Sunday.
When I turned 14, I began to struggle with serious depression:
not the normal middle school angst, but deep sadness.
In high school I found that the people who used drugs and
alcohol were friendly to me, so I started hanging out with this
group and was soon smoking pot and drinking. I immediately
loved getting high because it made me feel better about myself
and seemed to make me more likable. By the middle of 10th
grade I had a serious marijuana problem and ended up getting
kicked out of Brighton High School for smoking pot during
school.
My parents put me in private school and I got good grades
there, even as I continued to use drugs. When I graduated, I
went to Westminster College in Salt Lake for a year before
deciding to go on a mission for my church. I really didn't want
to go because I had been questioning what I had been learning
about in church, but I felt I had no other choice.
Despite my doubts, I embarked on the mission for
Manhattan, which did have the positive effect of helping to keep
me sober as I prepared to leave. I stayed in New York for six
months and felt like I did some good, especially by helping several poor families there. But I started feeling guilty about teaching something that I had doubts about. I told my church leaders that I didn't feel right being a missionary anymore and I
returned to school in Salt Lake.
Predictably, I went right back to drugs and alcohol. Since I
wasn't 21 yet, I started shoplifting alcohol. Despite my serious
substance abuse problem and criminal behavior, I managed to
graduate from college with a history degree in just three years.
Drugs Are No Longer a Comfort
After graduation, I had little motivation to find a job and
move out of my parent's house, especially since I was constantly smoking pot and drinking. When I turned 21, I started to go
to bars and met people that I could actually call friends, including girls. My parents, with good reason, kept pressuring me to
get a job, so I finally started working at a shipping company. It
was there that I met a group of coworkers who introduced me
to cocaine. I started spending all my money on drugs and was
even getting payday loans to support my habit. On some weekends, I would spend nights at a crack house, a place where a
bunch of strangers would get together to do drugs. I realized
my crack use was out of hand, so I quit and turned in force to
alcohol instead. It was 2006 when I got my first DUI.
My parents intervened and sent me to a treatment program,
which helped me stay sober for about a year. During that time,
I got my teaching certificate through the Western Governors
University and started student teaching Social Studies at a local
middle school. The teacher that oversaw me went on maternity
leave, so I ended up finishing the last two months of school for
her. That summer, I applied for several teaching positions and
had 12 interviews, but didn’t get any job offers. It could have
been because of the DUI on my record, or that I was too young,
but for whatever reason I couldn't get a teaching job.
The disappointment added to my depression and I took a job
stocking shelves at the Draper Library, finally saving up enough
money to move out of my parents’ home. I started hanging out
with a girl at my new apartment complex and soon learned that
she was a heroin junkie. I would go over to her apartment and
drink alcohol and she would do heroin and we would hang out
together. I kept telling her she needed to stop but she never did.
Eventually, she convinced me to try heroin, and it was at that
moment when my life truly took a turn for the worse. I instantly became addicted to heroin and my job performance started

declining. I was constantly showing up late and missing work. I
decided to quit before they could fire me. Without a job, I
pawned all my stuff to get money for heroin. Then I started
shoplifting electronics that I could pawn to get money.
One day I was driving a car with some of my heroin friends
when one of them started to overdose. We called 911 and when
the paramedics showed up, the police were in tow. I was arrested for possession of heroin and began a life of being in and out
of jail. Another time, after I was released from jail to a local
treatment program, I overdosed and the paramedics were
called. Rescue crews injected me with Narcan to reverse the
effects of the heroin and save my life. I was put back in jail and
continued the cycle as I struggled with heroin addiction.
Finding Real Change
In October of 2012, I was once again released from jail. I
was part of the Drug Court program at that point and a condition of my release was that I join the Rescue Mission of Salt
Lake’s New Life Recovery Program. I really didn’t know what I
believed about God, but I had been reading the New Testament
in jail and felt like maybe God was preparing me for what I was
about to learn at the Rescue Mission.
While it was a bit of a culture shock to live with homeless
people at the Mission, I quickly realized that God had put me in
the place I needed to be if I was going to change. It was really
a spiritual comprehension that ignited a change in my heart.
The understanding was that Jesus did all the work (in order for
sins to be forgiven and a way to Heaven made clear) by giving
His life on the cross. There was no more work needed to get to
Heaven, only a simple faith, trust and resting in the reality that
Jesus' sacrifice saved me. Obedience to God comes not as a way
to get to Heaven, but out of love for Him and what His Son did
(Ephesians 2:8-10). This realization lifted a huge weight off my
shoulders.
Through daily Bible studies and recovery meetings I learned
more about God’s grace and felt much of my depression go

the heart-level issues that were causing depression in my life,
leading to drug use to numb that pain. I found that talking
about emotional hurts that I had suppressed helped ease some
of the sting.
The Rescue Mission connected me with a great community
mentor - K.J. - who has been a boundless friend to me, even as
he teaches me more about the Bible and who God is. I have also
been learning more about God at the two churches I attend regularly - Calvary Chapel of Salt Lake and K2 The Church.
Today I feel confident that I won’t use drugs again, but I
know that I need to take a one-day-at-a-time approach. I have
entered the employment phase of the New Life Program and

Proclamation
President Abraham Lincoln, March 30, 1863
A PROCLAMATION BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES
Source: www.wallbuilders.com
At the White House James S. Brady Press Room Monday,
July 22, 2013 for Daily Briefing.
Dr. Anthony Harper here with the InterMountain Christian
News praising GOD for another trip to the White House to be
a witness of our Christian concerns for America to White
House staff and news reporters.
Even though I did not get called on in the White House
press conferences on Monday, July 22 and Tuesday, July 23, I
was able to make a difference for good and was a Christian
witness to several White House staff and news reporters.
President Obama’s press secretary Jay Carney expressed a
desire through his scheduler to meet with me privately on
Thursday July 25, but due to schedule conflicts, this did not
occur. Despite this disappointment, I am encouraged that Jay
Carney did want to meet with me.
On Friday, July 26 while at the White House to cover
President Obama’s helicopter departure for Camp David, I
was able to leave my following question with the 2 Chronicles
7:14 verse with his scheduler along with a copy of the book
The Harbinger that discusses America’s future to give to
President Obama’s press secretary Jay Carney. Pray that Mr.
Carney and President Obama read all the information I have
left for them and that I will be able to have my private meeting with them soon sharing The Gospel message and our
Christian concerns for the United States.
My question:
Mr. President, with regard to last month’s Supreme Court
decisions on marriage, what would you say to Americans who
believe that the solutions to our nation’s problems are found
in 2 Chronicles 7:14 and President Abraham Lincoln’s March
30, 1863 call for ‘genuine repentance’?
2 Chronicles 7:14 (King James Version)
If my people, who are called by my name, shall humble
themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from
their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will
forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
Whereas, the Senate of the United States, devoutly recognizing the supreme authority and just government of
Almighty God, in all the affairs of men and nations, has, by a resolution, requested the President to designate
and set apart a day for National prayer and humiliation;
And whereas, it is the duty of nations, as well as of men, to own their dependence upon the overruling power
of God, to confess their sins and transgressions, in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon, and to recognize the sublime truths announced in the Holy Scriptures,
and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord;
And, inasmuch as we know that, by his divine law, nations, like individuals, are subjected to punishments
and chastisements in this world, may we not justly fear that the awful calamity of civil war which now desolates the land, may be but a punishment inflicted upon us for our presumptuous sins, to the needful end of
our national reformation as a whole people? We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of Heaven.
We have been preserved, these many years, in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth and
power, as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God, we have forgotten the gracious hand
which preserved us in peace, and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined,
in deceitfulness of our hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of
our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self sufficient to feel the necessity of
redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us!
It behooves us, then, to humble ourselves before the offended Power, to confess our national sins, and to pray
for clemency and forgiveness.
Now, therefore, in compliance with the request, and fully concurring in the views of the Senate, I do by this
proclamation, designate and set apart Thursday, the 30th day of April, 1863, as a day of national humiliation, fasting and prayer. And I do hereby request all people to abstain from their ordinary secular pursuits,
and to unite, at their several places of public worship and their respective homes, in keeping the day holy to
the Lord, and devoted to the humble discharge of the religious duties proper to that solemn occasion.
All this being done in sincerity and truth, let us then rest humbly in the hope, authorized by the Divine teachings, that the united cry of the Nation will be heard on high and answered with blessings, no less than the pardon of our national sins, and restoration of our now divided and suffering country to its former happy condition of unity and peace.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.
Done at the City of Washington, this thirtieth day of March, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the independence of the United States the eighty-seventh.
By the President,
William H. Seward, Sec’y of State.

• That this mystery lies behind everything from 9/11 to the collapse of the
global economy?
• That ancient harbingers of judgment are now manifesting in America?
• That God is sending America a prophetic message of what is yet to come?
Before its destruction as a nation, ancient Israel received nine harbingers, prophetic omens of warning. The same
nine harbingers are now manifesting in America—with immediate ramifications for end-time prophecy.
Hidden in an ancient biblical prophecy from Isaiah, the mysteries revealed in The Harbinger are so precise that
they foretold recent American events down to the exact days. The revelations are so specific that even the most
hardened skeptics will find hard to dismiss. It sounds like the plot of a Hollywood thriller – with one difference… IT'S
REAL.
The prophetic mysteries are revealed through an intriguing and engaging narrative the reader will find hard to put
down. The Harbinger opens with the appearance of a man burdened with a message he has received from a mysterious figure called The Prophet. The Prophet has given him nine seals, each containing a message about
America's future. As he tells of his encounters with The Prophet, from a skyscraper in New York City, to a rural mountaintop, to Capitol Hill, to Ground Zero, the mystery behind each seal is revealed. As the story unfolds, each revelation becomes a piece in a greater puzzle - the ramifications of which will even alter the course of world history.

In Memory of Don Nelson
Don Nelson, A Memorial 1945-2013
Personal Reflections on Don’s Life from Shiloh Youth Revival Center Friends
(Shiloh Ministries)
Pictured above

Crystal.
From Ed McIsaac, Idaho Falls, Idaho
I first met Don and Shirley in the Fall of 1972 in Idaho Falls,
Idaho soon after Karan and I left our 2 1/2 year tenure and
beloved service with Youth Revival Centers, and not long before
Don and Shirley would join the same ministry with some
encouragement from us. We became dear friends and broke
bread (shared meals) together and hung out enjoying each
other's company. I looked up to Don and Shirley as torch bearers and exemplary models of the faith. Don was employed as a
mechanic at a local dealership in Idaho Falls and had a reputation of being an "ace" mechanic. Don helped me on several
occasions when I experienced problems with my vehicles or
simply needed an oil change.
Both Don and Shirley were true selfless servants and more
than dear friends. One memory that stands out is when Don
baptized Anthony Harper in his bathtub. Anthony came up out of
the water with a "good confession" of a life committed to Jesus
Christ. The bible says that the end is better than the beginning
and God saves the best for last. I am sure that Don has heard the
words that we all long to hear: "Well done my good and faithful
servant; enter now into the joy of the Lord!" Well done Don and
congratulations on your recent graduation into Paradise! We
will see you soon Don!
From egg to chrysalis the caterpillar neither sees nor dreams
beyond the comfort of his familiar surroundings. But, after his
triumphant transformation, with gossamer wings, is transported
from his earthly sanctuary as he soars into celestial's realm. The
caterpillar asks: "With what body shall I escape this mundane
life and the confinement of my pupation?" Then answer comes:
"Thou fool! The body that is sown into the cocoon is not quickened except it dies. And through terrestrial dissolution is raised
into the glorious liberty of heaven's transcendent sphere."
Alone, a seed will remain until death's domain conspires its life
to steal; but through burials demise the seed will arise pushing
terra firma aside. With new birth it shouts virgin corpus it
sprouts a sapling will reveal; Resurrected from the earth confirming it’s worth a garland becoming a bride. (A poem dedicated to Don.)
From Dr. Anthony Harper, Boise, Idaho
I first met Don and Shirley Nelson in 1972 when I was going
through a severe bout of depression following drug use, Don
and Shirley gave me a place to stay in their home and Don
helped me get a job as a car washer at Studer Volkswagen in
Idaho Falls, Idaho where he worked as an auto mechanic.
I have a special memory of Don baptizing me in his bathtub
along with his friend Ed McIsaac in the winter of 1972. What a
Statement of Faith
Intermountain Christian News is nondenominational
in attitude and emphasis.
We believe the Bible to be the only inspired, infallible, and authoritative Word of God. We believe in one God, eternally existent in three persons, - FATHER, Son (JESUS), and The HOLY SPIRIT. The Bible is the
totally sufficient resource for learning how to live a Godly life.
We believe in the virgin birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, His sinless life,
His vicarious and atoning death, His bodily resurrection, His ascension
to the right hand of God the Father, and His personal return in power
and glory.
We believe that only God The Son (Jesus) is the mediator between
man and God The Father and The Holy Spirit. Jesus alone can save us
from our sins, permit people entrance into Heaven, and is the only
Savior and hope. Only a personal relationship with Jesus will bring true
healing to people.
We believe that only Jesus is to be regarded as our spiritual Teacher
and Father. We do not look to ungodly counselors for wisdom.
We believe our salvation is by grace through faith, in His shed blood,
which is evident through our works.
We believe that Humans are a special creation of God and not as a
result of evolution.
We believe in the sanctity of life and therefore oppose abortion and
euthanasia.
We believe only in the Biblical view of marriage which is between one
man and one woman.
We trust in JESUS to give us wisdom, courage, strength and protection from evil.
We believe that it is our Christian duty to express our faith as a witness for Jesus in all matters public and private.
blessed spiritual time with them!
Don loved to share The Gospel and I would often hear him
sharing his experiences street witnessing, passing out Gospel
tracts and visiting prisoners in the Idaho Falls city jail.
I have a fond memory of helping Don and Shirley move to the
'Land' at the Shiloh Ministries center in Dexter, Oregon in
October of 1973. Don and I drove a truck of their belongings to
Eugene, Oregon from Idaho Falls, Idaho. On the way, we
stopped to visit my mother who was living in Nampa, Idaho. I
was blessed to have lived in the Idaho Falls, ID Shiloh Ministries
house (1971) and the Eugene, OR Shiloh house (1975).
My wife and I stayed with Don and Shirley in their mobile
home August of 1982 while we were on a Gospel concert tour.
After that visit, I lost track of Don and Shirley till 2011.
Don and I would have phone conversations weekly for the last
several years with wonderful fellowship and prayer time. I was
blessed to have seen Don and his adoptive son Jason when visiting them in the summer of 2012.
Don and I would often share our concerns for America and
pray that our country would return to its Godly American
Heritage. He was especially interested in my efforts at the White
House to share our Christian concerns for our nation.
My last phone call with Don was Tuesday, July 23 from
Washington, D.C. I shared my desire to visit with him on my
return and was able to arrange my plane flight to see him on
Saturday July 27. What a shock to hear from Don's daughter
Friday, July 26 that Don had already passed away.
It is hard to believe that my brother Don is gone. I still have
an urge to call him. How I love you brother Don and long to celebrate JESUS with you in person.
Maranatha! Come quickly LORD JESUS!

From Keith Kramis
I first met Don in 1975 shortly after Mary Beth (Peters) and
I were married. We purchased an old VW station wagon that was
in need of a bullet-to-the-head when we bought it, but we all
remember finances were not our first priority in those days.
Walking by faith was alive and well. Don and Shirley were part
of the Eugene Marrieds Fellowship and somehow The Lord
brought us together. Shirley and Don were well-seasoned and
showed the living-Word through their lives which helped us
greatly. Don worked on my VW and brought it back to life. I
don't recall spending a great deal of time with Don and Shirley
but my memories of Christ's impact through their lives is memorable.
Don drove big-rigs at some point and Mary Beth and I had
moved to Boise after the ministry closed. Don called me during
a trip that brought him through Boise and we hooked up. Don
was real without pretense or playing favorites when sharing his
time and friendship. This is a memorable trait which emulates
that of Jesus, constantly in give-mode. They will know us by the
love we have for one another. Both Don and Shirley were lovers
of men, especially lovers of the brethren going the extra mile to
serve, to give, to love. They both gave Mary Beth and I their very
best, not their leftovers. I would that I could say this about
myself.
Anthony Harper called me on Tuesday, July 23 at 4:00 p.m.
and told me of Don’s deteriorating health and battle with cancer
and gave me Don’s number. I called Don right away but got
Devin who told me Don was sleeping but would let him know I
called. Not five minutes later, Don called. This was just like Don
14 – 8-9.2013 / Intermountain Christian News
putting aside his own need for rest and calling me. Our time
together was just as if we had just seen each other and our relationship didn't need to be reestablished. This is just how our
relationship with Jesus is. We step away from Him, but He never
moves and is right there for me when at once again look full in
His wonderful face. We were there. Full on with deep meaningful conversation with Jesus, Don and I.
We spoke of The Lord's grace and mercy and the wonder of
His work in our lives. I reminded Don that he had been a living
example of simplicity in living his relationship with Christ outload. Don didn't make grandiose or flamboyant overtures in life,
he simply let Jesus in his daily living do the talking. We talked
about how Jesus makes His loudest, most profound statements
through a quiet submitted and connected life. I reassured Don
of his impact on every life that he has touched or been observed
by others. Those in Don's immediate life will testify of the love
of Christ seen in Don's daily life. Don and I spoke of many things
all related to our personal relationship with Christ.
We prayed together for those in his life who would be left
behind by his departure to be with Jesus. We asked The Lord to
assign His angels to every life, to protect, comfort, provide for,
unity and that there would be no sorrow, but rather joy and
rejoicing that Don is now safely in Jesus, his saviors hands. Don
truly wants those who remain to be comforted in this, that He
who has begun a good work in them will complete it until the
day of salvation.
We spoke of Jason and Devin's love and commitment to him
and his care. Of Shirley's daily comfort, care and provision in
these final days Don was so very thankful and blessed. We
prayed of Crystal and the whole family.
Please know that Don was comforted and placed you all in
the Lord's care, and was comforted in knowing they are all in
His care.
God bless you.

I came from you;
A beacon of hope.
I learned about You,
And Your love for me.
I told You I loved You, and let You in my heart.
I tried to be true to You, but I was weak.
I listened to Lucifer speak.
You took away the girl I loved.
You let me punish myself, living vile.
You even let me hate You for a while.
When I hit rock bottom, in the pit of despair, I looked
Around, and You were there.
Your pierced wrist
Picked me up, and
Brought my angel Jessie to me.
And,
Blessed me with boys.
Three bundles of joy.
You gave me
Life again, yet, I still
Struggle with sin.
And You forgive,
And forgive.
So I worship You and
Tell of your glory. I try to tell people of my healing story.
So, I can once again,
Be with You, in Heaven.

SuRVEy: Majority of Americans - Even Those Who don't
Attend Church - Say Nation Would Be Better if More
Americans Were Religious.
Thousands of churches suggest one way to improve communities is by participating in
National Back to Church Sunday on September 15th.
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO
August 1, 2013
ChristianNewswire.com
According to a Gallup poll released in May, a whopping 75%
of Americans think the USA would be a better place to live if
more people were religious – even though many of those surveyed reported they don’t attend church themselves.
One suggestion being offered to help? Come back to church.
A growing national movement is inviting all of America to
come to church on Sunday, September 15, for National Back to
Church Sunday®.
As of July 31, more than 16,000 churches across all 50
states had already signed up to invite their communities to
church on Sept. 15.
The online tally upticks continuously at www.back
tochurch.com as churches discover the free project and commit to promote the day in their congregation and their community, moving toward this year’s goal of 20,000 churches across
all denominations who are all reaching out to the nation with
special services on the same day.
The initiative, the largest nationwide effort at church outreach, draws on research indicating that although approximately 80% of Ameri-cans consider themselves Christians, only
about 20% attend church. Yet about two-thirds of Americans
would go to church if someone they knew asked them, according to a study by LifeWay Research and the North American
Mission Board.
“It’s been revealing to us that Americans greatly value the
role of religion in our society, and to realize how many people
would be open to trying church again if a friend or family
member made it easy by inviting them,” said Eric Abel, Vice
President of Outreach, Inc., the nation’s leading provider of
church communications resources that helped launch
National Back to Church Sunday.
“Part of the idea for National Back to Church Sunday,” he
added, “is that by making this a day when entire church communities make a special effort to be welcoming, it is an easy
time for someone to come back to church, or come to church
for the very first time.”
More than 95% of churches who participated in 2012 indicated they would do so again, citing a 38 percent increase in
attendance on National Back to Church Sunday and ongoing
benefits of increased participation and enthusiasm.
“I really encourage pastors to do this next year,” reported
Pastor Eric Evans, Walnut Grove Baptist Church, Hollister,
North Carolina, in survey comments. “Not only was it a great
way to get visitors in, but it also forces you to examine your
church to see how ready you are for them.”
There is no charge to participate, and the website at backtochurch.com offers a searchable roster of participating
churches along with free publicity materials, tips for using
social media, and information about using the Back to Church
Facebook page and YouTube channel.
In addition, banners, printed invitations and other timesaving publicity helps are available, as well as a richly-resourced
Back to Church kit. The kit includes a planning guide, videos,
posters, e-book, sermons, children’s curriculum, samples of
other printed resources, and more than 60 digital resources,
such as e-vites, web banners, Power Point presentations, logos
and childen’s resources. The videos, for use on Sunday mornings and on church websites, include three new videos as well
as the now-viral, innovative and light-hearted Pastor Rap video.
National Back to Church Sunday is the largest annual community-based church outreach effort in the nation, when thousands of churches share the simple message and mission of
inviting everyone in America Back to Church. The campaign
empowers churches and church members with the tools they
need to welcome their neighbors, friends and loved ones back
to church, while providing an easy way for everyone in the
community to find a welcoming church.

America’s “Changes” Far Outpaced by GOP Establishment
By Christopher G. Adamo, Wheatland, Wyoming
Even before Barack H.
Obama won reelection last
fall, Republican insiders
were beginning to chant the
mantra that “This is no
longer the America of Ronald
Reagan.” What they did not express so openly was their delight
at the prospect. And of course ever since Election Day, the
vaunted GOP Establishment has relentlessly espoused this message as it’s sorry version of a new awakening. From Bush
strategist Karl Rove, whose “Crossroads GPS” organization
focuses on the defeat of truly conservative Republicans during
political primaries, to conciliatory statements towards the
counterculture Republican National Committee Chairman
Reince Priebus, it is disturbingly apparent that behind closed
doors, Republican “moderates” are perceiving the political
atmosphere inside the Beltway as an opportunity to move their
party decidedly to the left.
On one issue after another, conservative America is being
abandoned by the GOP. Worse yet, on pivotal issues which will
determine the future of the country for decades to come, key
Republican figures are joining sides with the Democrats to
wrest control of the nation from the conservative grassroots.
The Republican betrayal on amnesty for the purported “eleven
million” illegals currently in America (the actual number is
likely several times that figure) is but the latest in a long string
of such capitulations on fundamental Republican principle.
Perhaps the makeup of the nation has changed since the
1980s, and it is no longer the America of Ronald Reagan as it
was three decades ago. But neither is it the America of Barack
Obama, despite incessant liberal assurances of such. Though
Obama won last fall, that election was hardly a direct contest
against the ideology and wisdom of Ronald Reagan, nor was
the 2008 campaign against John McCain a referendum on conservative versus liberal ideology. If America had truly drifted so
far left as to comfortably reside in the Obama camp, he and his
minions would not have needed to resort to rampant distortions and lawlessness for his victory. And once in office he
would not have required underhanded Chicago/ACORN tactics
in order to implement his agenda.
With each ensuing speech or press briefing, Barack Obama
proves he still operates in the Alinsky/Rules for Radicals mode,
and fully intends to do business in that manner for the duration of his tenure at the White House. It is crucial to realize that
while this scheme presents his greatest potential for doing
damage to the country, it also reveals his greatest weakness. In
order for such a strategy to work, the unwitting cowardice and
compliance of the intended target is an absolute necessity.
Otherwise, the paper thin leftist onslaught implodes on itself.
Enter the GOP Establishment.
Permeating any official discussion of S.744, the Senate
amnesty bill, are regular admissions of fear on the part of
Republicans. South Carolina Senator Lindsay Graham rationalized his support for the measure so that Republicans might
“get reattached to Hispanics.” Senator John McCain (R.-AZ)
openly admitted that amnesty would not garner Republican
votes, but hoped that it might get the GOP “in the game” at
some point in the future. Though Mitt Romney easily won
Arizona by a ten point margin in 2012, McCain had previously
asserted bluntly that his home state was “up for grabs” on
account of its Hispanic population. Such apprehensions are
stoked by regular “advice” from prominent Democrats who
insist that the Republican Party can only expect to win future
elections (no doubt a heartfelt aspiration of Democrats) if it
embraces amnesty.
Over on the House side, similar efforts are underway to
pressure Speaker John Boehner (R.-OH), himself hardly a bastion of conservative principle, to make nice with the Democrat
minority in that chamber even at the risk of thoroughly alienating conservatives. Rather than promoting an agenda of real
conservatism and thereby presenting America with clear alternatives to the rampant liberalism of the Democrats, Boehner is
admonished to drag his party leftward. The aggressive Senate
push for overwhelming majority support for amnesty (the
measure has already received a 2/3 majority in a preliminary
test vote) is specifically designed to accomplish just that. If
Boehner can be intimidated by its apparent momentum, he
may indeed be willing to discard his small reserve of principle
and join the amnesty bandwagon.
Sadly, it is by just such spineless strategic blunders that
Democrats may garner a win in a situation that, if it were properly characterized and opposed by the GOP, could put
Democrats completely on the defensive and dash their hopes
for political gains in 2014. The entire Obama agenda is daily
proving to be a dismal failure. The economy is still in ruins, as
it has been since 2009. The ravages of Obamacare are being
felt by an increasingly irate and resentful populace. And any
prospects for improvement are regularly thwarted by the latest
political onslaught from the White House, abetted of course by
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D.-NV) and House
Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi
(R.-CA).
On every other prominent
issue of the day, from the cavalcade of Obama Administration scandals to the systematic unraveling of the nation’s
cultural fabric (an indispensable component for advanc-
ing the leftist agenda) to the renewed assault on the nation’s
energy supplies, the people of the Heartland are waiting for
real opposition leadership to arise and confront the liberal
political machine. And when such individuals do make their
appearance, the response from the conservative base is immediate and overwhelming.
Barely a month ago, Florida Republican Marco Rubio might
once have been considered a universally popular contender
for the Republican Presidential nomination in 2016. Yet since
his abandonment of all previous reservations on amnesty, and
his subsequent decision to embrace it in its entirety, he has lost
much, if not all credibility with the conservative base. In contrast, during the same period Senator Ted Cruz (R.-TX) has
risen in stature on account of his willingness to remain true to
his ideals in the face of contrived ridicule from liberal
Democrats of both parties.
The principles which have defined the Republican Party are
still deeply ingrained in the hearts of the American people.
Traditional values, whether manifested in the reinforcement of
the family, the integrity of the nation’s borders, or any of the
other essential components of American society, cannot be discarded without reaping grave harm to the foundations of the
nation. It is not their presence in GOP policy that alienates the
conservative base. Rather, it is the degree to which the party
will predictably abandon them and start parroting Democrats
the moment political pressure is wielded against it.
The Republican Party cannot restore any shred of credibility if, at the bidding of the leftist counterculture, it ignores the
causal relationship between societal collapse and the expansion of government. Any attempts to straddle these fundamental truths and arrive at that mythical “middle ground” will leave
the party attempting to cast itself as nothing but a cheap imitation of the Democrats. This misbegotten thinking has never
worked, and never will.

What a New Generation Really
Thinks About Christianity…
and Why It Matters
By David Kinnaman and Gabe Lyons
Book review by Allen Marsh, Nampa, Idaho
“If Christians could read the mind of outsiders, filtered
through the objective lens of research, it would provide the
motivation we needed to change how we see ourselves and our
role in culture.”
This was the thought of Gabe Lyons that led him to resign
from his job and start a new non-profit organization to study the
cause of the division between “Outsiders” and Christianity. He
asked his friend David Kinnaman, who worked for The Barna
Group, to do the research for him. After three years of research,
the two coauthored the book.
Although speaking sometimes of “Busters” (born 19651983) and “Mosaics” (1984-2002), the main focus is on 18- to
29-year-olds, an overlapping group of the two.
Besides using their research material, the authors also
include perspectives of various Christian leaders.
The book identifies six stereotypes that Outsiders have of
Christians and discusses the causes of these perceptions.
Following are summaries of the stereotypes and of perspectives
we would like to see replace them.
Outsiders say we are hypocritical – we “say one thing but live
something entirely different.” We want them to see that
“Christians are transparent about their flaws and act first, talk
second.” [Are we really this way? Can we make this a reality?
The same questions apply to later stereotypes.]
Outsiders believe we “are insincere and concerned only with
converting others.” We want them to see that “Christians cultivate relationships and environments where others can be deeply
transformed by God.”
www.imcnews.org
Their perception is that Christians are anti-homosexual.
“Christians show contempt for gays and lesbians.” We want a
perception that Christians “show compassion and love to all
people, regardless of their lifestyle.”
They see Christians as sheltered. “Christians are boring, unintelligent, old-fashioned, and out of touch with reality.” The perception desired is that we are “engaged, informed, and offer
sophisticated responses to the issues people face.”
They believe we are too political. We “are primarily motivated by a political agenda and promote right-wing politics.” We
want them to understand that we “are characterized by respecting people, thinking biblically, and finding solutions to complex
issues.”
The final stereotype is that we are judgmental. We “are prideful and quick to find faults in others.” We want a change to belief
that “Christians show grace by finding the good in others and
seeing their potential to be Christ followers.”
The authors give not only statistical results of their surveys but
also narrative accounts of their conversations with Outsiders.
Outsiders have valid reasons for their perceptions. The book
gives ways we can be more aware of the image we are projecting.
After the surveys, Gabe said he “was unprepared for how
resistant, entrenched, and pessimistic the response would be.”
His hope is that as we read this book our heart and mind will be
changed – that we will reexamine what it means to be
“Christian” and begin to live it.

Michael Oard became interested in creationism after reading Whitcomb and Morris’s The Genesis Flood in the early
1970s. Having a focus on research, his interest grew to the
point that he asked himself what he could contribute. That is
when the idea of an Ice Age model started. The first paper on
the Ice Age was published in 1979 in the Creation Research
Society Quarterly.
Since then dozens of articles and about six books have been
published on the Ice Age. Research on the Ice Age ignited an
interest in glaciology, geology and geophysics, which he has
been ardently studying for over 35 years.
Michael has a B.S. and M.S. degree in atmospheric science
from the University of Washington. He was a research meteorologist for 6 years at the University of Washington. In 2001, he
retired as a lead forecaster with the National Weather Service
in Great Falls, Montana. Since then he has been doing full time
research in creationist earth science. Over the years, he has
learned to speak to lay adults and children on a variety of subjects in the earth sciences.
Michael has published eight papers or technical monographs in the secular technical literature of the American
Meteorological Association and the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Association. Since becoming a creationist, he has
published about 200 articles in the creationist technical literature and has authored, coauthored, or been editor of fourteen
published creationist books for different ages on the Flood, the
Ice Age, weather, geology, and National park guides. He is on
the board of the Creation Research Society.
Michael has been married to Beverly for over 40 years, and
they have four grown children with 10 grandchildren. All but
the youngest son live close by in Bozeman, Montana.

Foundations In Genesis of Idaho/Oregon, also known as ‘FIGI’ (pronounced fig-ee), is a science organization that
hosts adult & children's science seminars and geological field adventures. By bringing in scientists who are experts in their
fields, FIGI Seminars and Field Adventures offer fascinating information and cutting edge evidence which encourages critical thinking and an understanding of factual science which is key no matter whether a person chooses to interpret the evidence from either an evolutionary or a biblical perspective.
“WE BELIEVE that the origin of matter and all basic types of living things, including man, came about through direct creative acts of God during the six-day creation week described in Genesis.”
What does science tell us about the scriptures above? Did everything begin evolving billions of years ago after the big bang
or are we living on a young earth created by God?
Please join us. Our seminars are lay people friendly and are offered at no charge. Our geological field adventures consist of local one day trips and camping expeditions and costs are minimal. Check out our website for a history of our past
seminars and field adventures and for upcoming events. www.figionline.com

REVIEW
Answering
Mormons’
Questions:
Ready
Responses for
Inquiring
Latter-day
Saints
(Kregel Publications, 2013)
Co-authored by Bill McKeever and Eric Johnson, Mormonism Research
Ministry.
Answering Mormons’ Questions, a book written by Bill
McKeever and Eric Johnson to help Christians respond to common inquiries asked by members of the Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-day Saints, was re-released in May 2013. Originally
written and self-published by McKeever in 1981 before it was
picked up by Bethany House Publishers in 1991, the book has
undergone a major renovation.
“These are actual questions we have received on the streets
during many years of evangelism,” McKeever said. Added
Johnson, “This manual should be helpful for anyone wanting
to be more effective in sharing their faith with their Mormon
friends and neighbors.”
There are a total of six sections and thirty-six chapters, with
the questions framed as if posed by a Latter-day Saint. For
example, the first chapter asks, “Why won’t you accept
Mormons as Christians? Do you think we’re a cult?” Quoting
primarily from LDS sources – including the Standard Works,
official correlated manuals, and the words of general authorities – the authors provide easy-to-understand explanations utilizing their proven “gentle and respectful” tactics.
Each chapter starts with a quote from a church leader as
well as several possible “response questions.” A chapter summary helps readers know what to expect. Then, at the end of
the chapter, “Questions for Discussion” (with a leader’s study
guide available on the MRM website) provides a way for
groups to study the book. The chapter’s final paragraph is a
paragraph providing an evangelism tip.
Long-time apologist Sandra Tanner of Utah Lighthouse
Ministry wrote the book’s foreword. Those endorsing the book
include Josh and Sean McDowell, Mark Mittelberg, James
White, and Mark Strauss.
The authors, who are currently in the process of revising
their 2000 book Mormonism 101 (Baker, 2000), are available for interviews. If your media organization would like a
complimentary copy of the book or you are interested in interviewing the authors on your station, please contact Bill
([email protected]) or Eric ([email protected]).
