March 2013
Ready for Spring!
Thank you for your continued support of all we are
doing in this fast-paced economic environment. It’s hard to
believe that we’re a few short weeks away from the official
beginning of spring, although many days in February registered spring temperatures.
The warm days certainly helped contribute to another great year for the World’s Greatest Horseman, Slack,
and our very successful Stock Show & Rodeo by spurring midway attendance. Thanks to all the volunteers, sponsors and
Mark Thieman
staff for another outstanding event. February also found
Chairman of the Board
many of us attending the very successful gathering of the
Ports-to-Plains Southern Work Group Conference hosted by
the City of San Angelo with assistance from the Chamber. Delegates from West Texas and
the states of Coahuila, Chihuahua and Durango, Mexico, delved into important discussions
regarding transportation, energy, the economies of our regions and the potential for major
economic growth from trade and transportation initiatives underway.
Also last month, the Chamber held its annual Cornerstone Investors luncheon
Feb. 20, during which we talked about recent achievements and the return on investment
from Cornerstone dollars in economic development, legislative affairs, and major event
tourism. Focusing dollars through these strategic efforts is having a very positive impact on
San Angelo, and if you weren’t able to join us and want more information, please let us
know. Also in February, we hosted Congressman Conaway’s military legislative assistant
from Washington, and our P-16+ Education Partnership facilitated its third very successful
College Goal Sunday, serving over fifty students and families.
Our regular monthly events were truly outstanding as well, with Texas Agriculture
Commissioner Todd Staples addressing our monthly luncheon about the huge impact of
agriculture on our region. Thanks to sponsors American Classifieds and Capital Farm Credit
for enabling the event. Also, kudos to Concho Valley PAWS for the wonderful Business @
Happy Hour networking event at Sunset Mall, and to Pamela Venable of Strategic Business
Solutions for leading our Business Brown Bag attendees in the session on improving the
financial management of your business, co-sponsored by the Chamber, ASU Small Business
Development Center and the Business Factory.
I hope to see you at some of the following during March:





Join us for the important March 5 luncheon for our annual update on Goodfellow AFB
from Col. Mark Damiano, Commander, 17th Training Wing. It takes place from 11:30
to 1 at the Clarion Hotel and is sponsored by Mitchell Automotive and Qualtrust Credit
union. Please call 655-4136 ext 235 to make your $15 reservation, register online at
www.sanangelo.org, or email [email protected].
Join us for Business @ Happy Hour on Tuesday, March 26, at Beauregard Place, 1421
Beauregard, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The cash drawing and door prizes will enhance your
great networking, along with the hors d’oeuvres and beverages.
Look at opportunities to become a sponsor, volunteer or a vendor for the Chamber’s
“Showdown in San Angelo” drag boat races, June 21-23.
Help recognize business growth and expansion during 2012 in San Angelo by returning
the business expansion recognition form regarding your business or another employer
by this Friday, March 1.
Don’t forget our Brown Bag Business Lunch Tuesday, March 19, at the Visitor Center
River View Room, exploring “Business Leadership” with Terry Mobley. This is free
unless you order a $7 box lunch, but please RSVP to 655-4136 to reserve your space.
Remember, with your help and support, we’re takin’ care of business.

From the Economic Development Division
Cornerstone Program Generates Huge Return on Investment
Since the program’s inception in 2006, Cornerstone investors have pledged just over $597,000. Those
dollars have been put to work over the past five years to generate enormous returns in the areas of
economic development, government affairs and major event tourism. To date, an economic impact
over $153 million has been documented.
The 2013 Cornerstone Campaign kicked off with an information luncheon on February 20th and will be a focus
for the next several months. If you would like to learn more about Cornerstone, please contact the Chamber.

Board Member Perspective
Your Chamber is guided by 19 volunteers who make up the Board of Directors. Each month we feature a different board member perspective to better acquaint you with the men and women who serve in these leadership roles.
Blaine Smith
I moved to San Angelo in 1980 to attend Angelo State University. I began working for Rio Concho
Retirement Communities in 1992 as operations manager and currently am the Assistant Executive Director.
My primary responsibility is to oversee the operations and expansion of Rio Concho West. Rio Concho
West currently has 272 homes and over 400 residents and new construction is beginning on the next phase.
I first became involved with the Chamber in 1984 while employed at First City Bank. I volunteered
during Fiesta del Concho at the ticket booths and participated in the parades. I especially enjoy helping
now with the Goodfellow AFB Picnic and the Drag Boat Races.
In addition to the Chamber, I currently serve on the local RSVP Board, Leadership San Angelo
Alumni, Angelo State Athletic Foundation and Project Janus. I have volunteered in the community by
coaching youth baseball, soccer and basketball. It is a true joy to work with our youth and future leaders. I have also previously served
on the United Way and Angelo Civic Theatre Boards and recently served as an Elder at St Paul Presbyterian Church.
The San Angelo Jaycees (Junior Chamber of Commerce) opened my eyes to volunteerism and taught me that we can all make a
difference by working together. Service to humanity is the Best Work of Life.
I am a graduate of Odessa Permian and Angelo State. I have been married to my high school sweetheart, Terri, for 31 years.
She and our daughter, Tricia Hartman, are SAISD elementary teachers. Our son Ryan is employed by Glazer’s. We love San Angelo because it is a great place to live, get an education, work, raise a family and volunteer. Be good.
