A Message from the VP
Dear Friends and Colleagues
First, let me thank everyone for your contributions to making 2011
another successful year. In 2011, we completed work on our new
website, launched the first issue of our KleerViews newsletter, introduced
a new marketing brochure highlighting our best-selling products
and completed our new swab video. All of these can be seen at
www.kleenmold.com. Regarding 2012, we plan to attend the Glassman
South America Exhibition in Mexico City on May 15 and 16, and the
Glasstech Exhibition in Dusseldorf from October 23 to 26. We hope to
see everyone at one or both of these events.

Vice President, Glass Business
“...2013 will be the 75th
anniversary of the birth
of Kleenmold.”
As you all know, Kleenmold has been around for a long time. The first
Kleenmold product (Kleenmold # 1) was developed in the United States
in Jersey City, New Jersey by Bud Singer of Specialty Products Co. This
means that 2013 will be the 75th anniversary of the birth of Kleenmold.
As this is a special occasion, we believe it calls for a celebratory meeting.
In this regard, we have been promising Rodger Damen of Millchem from
South Africa (who attends our meetings all around the world without
fail) that we would reciprocate one day and have our annual distributor
meeting in his territory. So, we’re pleased to announce that the 2013
distributor meeting will be held in South Africa. Final plans are being
made and will be announced in the next few months.
Please check out the new Kleenmold website. Within the site, you’ll find
our core products by type and all current Product Data Sheets (PDS) and
Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). Under the “Resources” tab, there
are links to the TOTAL eStore, Swab school and over a dozen technical
articles. Finally, under the Distributor tab, you can find every Kleenmold
distributor and agent by country with contact information. Review your
information for accuracy and let us know via email of any changes.
We look forward to seeing everyone soon!

Distributor Spotlight:
You win, I win, Allwin!
by Robin Luo
Managing Director, Shanghai Allwin
Trade & Development Co. Ltd.
16 years, 20 times.
From 10 to 200 plants,
from 15 to 300 tons.
Everyone is wondering
how it happens for
Kleenmold in China.
“We have been so lucky to have a top product in a big and fast growing
market. Of course, we’ve done our work efficiently,” said Robin Luo,
Managing Director of Shanghai Allwin Trade & Development Co. Ltd.
After working seven years for a state-owned company, with experience
in different businesses including import/export, enterprise management
and the stock exchange, Luo began working for Elf Lubricants in 1995,
first as a Kleenmold sales manager in the Guangzhou office and then
assigned to establish the Shanghai office in 1997 for Lubmarine, with
responsibilities in sales and marketing, logistics and human resources.
His outstanding management ability and communication skills were well
recognized by the company and customers.

Jim Zelko – Technical Manager

In 2002, when TOTAL merged with Elf, Luo resigned from Elf to set up his
own company: Shanghai Allwin, the distributor of Kleenmold and agent
of Lubmarine for TOTAL Lubricants Hong Kong Ltd. “This was my chance
to start my own business and at the same time, the company would have
a reliable agent, and the customer would have the same service. That’s
really a win-win situation,” said Luo. “That’s why I named my company
Allwin. And, I am sincerely thankful to my former bosses and colleagues.”
Spring | Summer 2012
The Chinese economy keeps booming
and the glass industry is growing
silently. As Kleenmold develops as a
leader of foreign swabbing compound,
Allwin has been enjoying a prosperous
period. “The new plants will come to
us even before we find them,” said Luo.
“This is because of the quality of all
Kleenmold products and our focus on
customer service.”
Customer service includes
troubleshooting the problem in client
application, whether lubrication quality
or a swabbing issue and timeliness
and safe delivery, whether it is 20 km
or 4,000 km away. Allwin offers
customers flexible payment terms,
on-site visits and giveaways including
a swab school DVD, swab master
poster, and Kleenmold calendars,
knives and flashlights.
“We have 200 plants, more than 70%
of the market share,” explained Luo.
“We still have more room to grow
in shear lubricants and scoop oil,
and 40% more potential for swab
compound in terms of total usage.
But on the other hand, we’re
facing more and more challenges.
More Foreign brands are coming
on board, while dozens of local
brands are competing in price,
some even declaring they are
duplicates of Kleenmold.”
“Luckily we’re the real Kleenmold,”
he added, confident for the products
as well as his efficient team. “We’re
not afraid of any fair competition. We
believe that our integrity will keep us
ahead of the competition.”
While the business is continuing to
grow, Luo can spend more time with
his family including his wife Wendy,
another busy manager with the largest
online travel company, Ctrip.com., son
Alex, who is talented in piano and golf
and his mother.
Luo feels grateful for all he has in his
life — his job, customers, his family,
as well as to the country. “When I
graduated from the university, my
biggest dream was to have my own
cell phone or motorcycle,” Luo
commented. “I could not imagine how
much my family and I have and the fact
that our generation is benefiting most
from our country’s freedom.”

Kleenmold Drum
The color of a Kleenmold drum is something very familiar to you
and your customers. But did you know that Kleenmold drums are
sold in two colors?
Our new
Going back to the days of Specialty Products and Millmaster Onyx, Kleenmold
in the USA and Canada has always been packaged in a blue drum (Specialty
Products). In all other countries, Kleenmold has been packaged into a green
and white drum (Millmaster Onyx). Because everyone was so familiar with
Kleenmold being delivered in these color packages, we decided to maintain this
practice when the business was consolidated under the TOTAL Lubricants brand.
Regardless of the color of the drum, you can rely on the fact that for almost 75
years, we have delivered consistent, quality products in each and every drum.
We remain 100% committed to do the same in the future.

When Kleenmold was first acquired by TOTAL, we wanted to reinforce the fact
that we were part of a large, global organization and the “TOTAL” name was
added to the Kleenmold drum. Now that this is clear to everyone, we have
decided to return to our brand name of “Kleenmold.” Our new drums will now
feature both the “Kleenmold” and “TOTAL” logos.
Of course, all relevant health and safety
information is still available on the label.
Most importantly, the color will stay the same!

Delivery Coatings
Kleenmold Base 10 vs.
Kleenmold Base 26
Kleenmold’s product line includes two of the world’s most popular delivery
coatings: Kleenmold Base 10 and Kleenmold Base 26. Both products are based
on a TWO component, epoxy system utilizing graphite as the lubricant. Both work
well for coating the delivery equipment: scoops, troughs and deflectors.
The main advantages of Kleenmold Base 26 are described in the chart below:
Pot Life (minutes)
Life on Machine (weeks)
8
Base 10
Base 26
30
1 to 3
90
3 to 6
The life on the machine depends
on the size and speed of the gob.
The larger the gob and the faster
the speed – the shorter the coating
life. But all things being equal, the
Base 26 will outperform the Base 10.
Gob speed, cleanliness, and other
aspects of performance are the same.
Chemically, Base 26 contains a
high temperature epoxy and a large
particle size, flake graphite. These
characteristics lead to longer life on
the machine.
For both products (as with all
coatings), the application is very
important. Proper application will
result in better performance and
longer life on the machine.
Spring | Summer 2012
Application procedure for both products:
SURFACE PREPARATION
Clean and degrease the surface
Oil, rust, grease, loose particles or other materials should be thoroughly
removed from all surfaces to be coated. It is recommended that the surface be
sandblasted and degreased prior to application. Avoid finger marks and further
contamination of cleaned surfaces before coating.
MIXING
Thoroughly mix the epoxy resin and then epoxy resin/catalyst mixture
The Kleenmold Base 10 or 26 and Catalyst (epoxy resin component) should be
thoroughly mixed to a uniform paste to suspend any settled material. To the
thoroughly mixed Base 10 or 26 component, add the Catalyst while stirring until
a uniform, smooth mixture is obtained. This may require stirring for two to four
minutes. Wooden spatulas are provided with each case.
APPLICATION PROCEDURE
Use a 2 inch (5 cm) paint brush to apply smooth, even coating
After mixing, the Kleenmold Base 10 or 26 and Catalyst mixture is ready for
application and should be applied before the material gets too thick (Base 10:
30 min; Base 26: 90 min). Curing begins with mixing, with an exothermic reaction
(gives off heat), and the mixture will continue to thicken as time progresses.
The Kleenmold Base 26 and Catalyst mixture has a consistency to allow brush
coating. Experience indicates that a two-inch paintbrush with the bristle length
cut in half can be used to evenly paint the mixture onto the delivery system
components. It is not necessary to brush out the coating excessively since brush
marks and slight variations in thickness are acceptable. Experience shows that a
1 to 2 mm coating of the product will achieve optimal performance.
As usual, sample and technical
assistance on the proper use of
these products is available upon
request from your local Kleenmold
representative. You can find your
representative’s contact information
at www.Kleenmold.com.
Curing time and procedure
• Air-cures at 22°C (72°F) in more than 20 hours
• Oven-cures at 66°C (151°F) in 1 hour
COATING REMOVAL
Pass through the lehr (temp > 300°C) and then sandblast*
The Kleenmold Base 26 and Catalyst coating can be removed as required by
passing the delivery system components through the lehr or other heating
device. The coating can also be removed by placing the coated equipment in an
oven at any temperature greater than 300°C for 15 to 20 minutes. Both the lehr
and oven method will deteriorate the coating so that steel wool or glass bead
blasting will readily remove it.
*Check all local environmental regulations as laws vary from country to country.

Training Tips:
Proper Swabbing
Makes All the Difference
in Bottle Production
With all the new technology that has come to the
IS machine, such as electric timing, temperature
control and equipment, swabbing has remained
the same for generations. The swab is still the
tool of choice, and the operator is the only one
controlling that variable. Accuracy, timing and
quantity are a must in good bottle production.
Here are some important training
tips for swabbing:
Quantity is a must when it comes to swabbing
Too much swabbing causes buildup and the need
for more frequent equipment changes. A dry swab
more often is better than a wet swab less often.
A “dry swab” can be defined as “the least amount
of compound on the swab that still runs the job at
percentage pack.”
Each side of the equipment must be swabbed
the same for accuracy. Uneven swabbing leads
to uneven heat extraction and defects, such as light
sides and swung baffles.
Timing is very important.
When setting the swab cycle, always try not to
deviate from the cycle. If deviation occurs, the blanks
temperature can change when not swabbed on time,
and hotter blanks will change the makeup of the
bottle. To recover, get the temperature back down.
This step takes time, IF you can get it back to
operating temperature.

Ulrike Mueller, TOTAL Glass Lubricants GmbH
“Millions and millions
of glass containers are
produced every single
day, and all need our
Kleenmold products to
aid in the process.”
I joined the TOTAL Glass Lubricants Europe GmbH (at that time called
“Elna”) in the summer of 1997. I found a small office situated in the
countryside on the outskirts of Cologne / Bonn with only a few
staff members. I was given a hearty welcome by my colleagues and
immediately felt familiar and part of a great team.
Over time, I got more involved with personnel from our main office in the
USA, as well as our distributors and agents around Europe. My feelings
towards the company and the people I had to work with did not change
at all over time, and our relationships strengthened when I met the
individuals personally.
I first thought our company was very small, but quickly realized that
(ELNA) TOTAL Glass Lubricants Europe GmbH, together with TOTAL
Lubricants USA, were working world wide and this made my job even
more interesting. Meeting people from all over Europe, and from
Australia to Mexico, at meetings and exhibitions is exciting, and develops
not only business relationships, but friendships as well.
12
Spring | Summer 2012
My job is very diverse, from creating purchase and sales orders with all customer
requirements, to checking warehouses to ensure that we always have enough
trading stocks to fulfill customer orders. I am responsible for ensuring that only
full 40-foot containers are ordered. As they take six to eight weeks to arrive
from the USA, I need to ensure that they are ordered on time, allow sufficient
time at sea, as well as have then cleared through customs with all the correct
documentation. I then liaise with freight forwarders and the warehouses to
ensure the safe arrival at various warehouses ready for sale.
Our customers rely on TGLE to always have enough products in stock to supply
their needs. From time to time, when customers have forgotten to order, we have
to make arrangements for urgent deliveries. Providing customer service, both
technically and commercially, allows us to develop good relationships with our
customers. My Italian language skills enable me to assist my Italian colleague for
the Italian market as well.
Additionally, we have to think about safety items. We must offer our Material
Safety Data Sheets in nine different languages for the European countries we
are selling our products to. Developing these requires contact with our safety
consultant as well as our vendors, customers and distributors. REACH has
become a big issue over the past few years, ensuring that all Safety Data Sheets,
as well all other safety aspects, are handled carefully and in compliance with
the law. Technical Data Sheets are given to our customers based on what was
received from TOTAL Lubricants USA.
Furthermore, I am responsible for organizing the biggest glass exhibition
worldwide, which takes place in Germany every two years. At this event, TOTAL
distributors and agents from all over the world come to Germany and I handle
meetings and hotel accommodations. With respect to our agents, contracts as
well as commissions need to be handled and coordinated with our lawyers.
Internally in TOTAL Glass Lubricants Europe GmbH, I am responsible for employee
affairs and support the Corporate Officer with administrative and technical
issues.
When I visited my first glass plant, I was very surprised by the technique involved
and the speed the glass bottles were produced. The speed of the gob being
distributed down the scoop is amazingly fast, and I realized just how easily
mistakes can be made that effect production. I was surprised to learn just how
many parts of the machine need to be swabbed and sprayed to facilitate smooth
glass production, and the way glass is colored through a dyed furnace and a
feeder. Glass container production is a science itself, and no one can just jump
into the job without knowledge and a lot of experience. Millions and millions
of glass containers are produced every single day, and all need our Kleenmold
products to aid in the process. I am proud to be a member of the TOTAL Glass
Lubricants GmbH team and to be part of the system involved in creating a
finished glass bottle.
