During the Centenary Year (2011-2012) celebration of our
absolutely beautiful church, our Parish family came home for
Mass and we remembered one another with the flowers that
adorn the Altar, with the candles that light up the Sanctuary, with
the bread and wine that is offered, and of course in the way par
excellence, we remembered one another in the Priest’s Mass
Intention that is lifted up with the help of all of our other
remembrances! Thank you for coming home and remembering
one another! Thank you for coming home and remembering Him

 A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR 
12 JULY 2015
CAN THE FIRST SMILE LAST?
Ever since my arrival on 25 June 2008 as the Parish of Our Holy Redeemer’s tenth Pastor,
(by the way: “I would like to thank all of you who helped me commemorate my seventh anniversary
on 25 June 2015 with an increase of 25 Cents More in your weekly Offering. That 25 Cents is making a
difference)
we have regularly prayed for an increase in Vocations to the Priesthood. Over these years, those prayers have
brought us more than just 25 Cents More a Week and the many things that it pays for; those prayers have
brought us Seminarians who went on to be Priests, Priests who went on for further studies in Rome, and Bishops
who went home to God. Never before the arrival of Father Alessandro however, have our prayers for an
increase in Vocations to the Priesthood during that time, brought a newly Ordained Priest home to Our Holy
Redeemer! Here’s how the Most Reverend William F. Murphy, Bishop of Rockville Centre put it in a letter he
wrote to Father Alessandro five days before ordaining him a Priest:
“It is my pleasure to appoint you as Associate Pastor at the Church of Our Holy Redeemer in
Freeport where Reverend Douglas Arcoleo is the Pastor. This assignment commences on
Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at twelve o’clock noon, through June 2020.”
Father Alessandro’s first assignment commenced on 24 June 2015 just as Bishop Murphy
said it would. And since then he has said his first Mass at Our Holy Redeemer, heard his
first Confession at Our Holy Redeemer, Anointed his first dying person at Our Holy
Redeemer, spent his first day “on Duty” at Our Holy Redeemer, and made his first
appearance as a Priest of Our Holy Redeemer on the Nautical Mile. In all of these things
and more, our newly Ordained Priest has given our Parish a “lift” (and so have many
others as you can see from the following page).
Please pray that the joy of being a Priest will remain with him long after he celebrates all
his “firsts”, and that the smile with which he has begun his service will last.

The Family - 6. The Elderly
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Good morning!
Today’s catechesis and next Wednesday’s will be dedicated to the elderly, who in the family are the
grandparents, aunts and uncles. Today we will reflect on the current problematic condition of the elderly,
and next time, that is, next Wednesday, on a more positive note, on the vocation pertaining to this stage of
life.
Thanks to the progress of medicine life-spans have increased: but society has not “expanded” to life! The
number of elderly has multiplied, but our societies are not organized well enough to make room for them,
with proper respect and practical consideration for their frailty and their dignity. While we are young, we
are led to ignore old age, as if it were a disease to keep away from; then when we become old, especially if
we are poor, if we are sick and alone, we experience the shortcomings of a society programmed for
efficiency, which consequently ignores its elderly. And the elderly are a wealth not to be ignored.
Benedict XVI, visiting a home for the elderly, used clear and prophetic words, saying in this way: “The quality
of a society, I mean of a civilization, is also judged by how it treats elderly people and by the place it gives
them in community life” (12 November 2012). It’s true, attention to the elderly makes the difference in a
civilization. Is there attention to the elderly in a civilization? Is there room for the elderly? This civilization
will move forward if it knows how to respect wisdom, the wisdom of the elderly. In a civilization in which
there is no room for the elderly or where they are thrown away because they create problems, this society
carries with it the virus of death.
In the West, scientists present the current century as the aging century: children are diminishing, the elderly
are increasing. This imbalance challenges us, indeed, it is a great challenge for contemporary society. Yet a
culture of profit insists on casting off the old like a “weight”. Not only do they not produce — this culture
thinks — but they are a burden: in short, what is the outcome of thinking like this? They are thrown away.
It’s brutal to see how the elderly are thrown away, it is a brutal thing, it is a sin! No one dares to say it
openly, but it’s done! There is something vile in this adherence to the throw-away culture. But we are
accustomed to throwing people away. We want to remove our growing fear of weakness and vulnerability;
but by doing so we increase in the elderly the anxiety of being poorly tolerated and neglected.
During my ministry in Buenos Aires I was in direct contact with this reality and its problems: “The elderly are
abandoned, and not only in material instability. They are abandoned out of a selfish incapacity to accept
their limitations that reflect our own limitations, because of the numerous difficulties that must be overcome
in order to survive in a society that does not allow them to participate, to have their say, or be referents in
the consumer model of ‘only the young can be useful and enjoy’. These elderly persons throughout society
ought to be a reservoir of wisdom for our people. The elderly are the reservoir of wisdom for our people!
How easily the conscience falls dormant when there is no love!” (Solo l’amore ci può salvare, Vatican City,
2013, p. 83).
And it happens like that. I remember, when I was visiting a retirement home, I spoke with each person and I
frequently heard this: “How are you? And your children? Well, well. How many do you have? Many. And do
they come to visit you?. Oh sure, yes, always, yes, they come. When was the last time they came?” I
remember an elderly woman who said to me: “Mmm, for Christmas”. It was August! Eight months without
being visited by her children, abandoned for eight months! This is called mortal sin, understand? Once as a
child, a grandmother told us the story of an old grandfather who got dirty while eating because he couldn't
easily bring the spoonful of soup to his mouth. And his son, that is, the father of the family, had decided to
move him from the dinner table and set up a little table in the kitchen to eat alone, so he couldn’t be seen.
In this way he wouldn’t make a bad impression when friends came over to lunch or dinner. A few days later,
he came home and found his youngest child playing with some wood and a hammer and nails, he was
making something there, he said: “What are you making? — I’m making a table, papa. — A table, why? — To
have one for when you grow old, so that you can eat there”. Children are more aware than we are!
In the tradition of the Church there is a wealth of wisdom that has always supported a culture of closeness to
the elderly, a disposition of warm and supportive companionship in this final phase of life. This tradition is
rooted in Sacred Scripture, as these passages from the Book of Sirach attest: “Do not disregard the discourse
of the aged, for they themselves learned from their fathers; because from them you will gain understanding
and learn how to give an answer in time of need” (Sir 8:9).
The Church cannot and does not want to conform to a mentality of impatience, and much less of
indifference and contempt, towards old age. We must reawaken the collective sense of gratitude, of
appreciation, of hospitality, which makes the elder feel like a living part of his community.
Our elders are men and women, fathers and mothers, who came before us on our own road, in our own
house, in our daily battle for a worthy life. They are men and women from whom we have received so much.
The elder is not an alien. We are that elder: in the near or far future, but inevitably, even if we don’t think it.
And if we don’t learn how to treat the elder better, that is how we will be treated.
We old people are all a little fragile. Some, however, are particularly weak, many are alone, and stricken by
illness. Some depend on the indispensable care and attention of others. Are we going to take a step back?
Abandon them to their fate? A society without proximity, where gratuity and affection without
compensation— between strangers as well — is disappearing, is a perverse society. The Church, faithful to
the Word of God, cannot tolerate such degeneration. A Christian community in which proximity and gratuity
are no longer considered indispensable is a society which would lose her soul. Where there is no honour for
elders, there is no future for the young.

?
Shortly before Christmas 2014, Our Holy Redeemer's
outdoor lift became inoperable. And while it could be
repaired (again) at a cost of a few thousand dollars, I
have decided, after going “up and down” that route a
few times before, that Our Holy Redeemer has spent
enough money on repairs and that it makes more
(dollars and) sense to replace it an estimated cost
(based on the figures of three proposals) of
$40,000.00. In order to help offset that cost, the Parish
has reached out to (and is waiting to hear from) Nassau
County, the Village of Freeport, and private charitable organizations that grant funds
for services that assist the elderly and disabled. Any assistance you can provide will
literally give us a lift!
The following people have begun to lift us up:
Arnold Gallo, William Gallo, The Village of Freeport, the Friends of
Angie Cullin, Alan and Cathy Richartz, John Anzovino, Margaret
Nyland, Diana Gibson, Our Holy Redeemer Parishioners who
participate in the “Oceanside Christopher Federal Credit Union Parish
Revenue Sharing Program”, Mr. & Mrs. Walter Shorak, Gloria Di
Brizzi, Gloria Cintorino, Barbara and Raymond Burkart, Carol Sparaco,
Ann Kelly, Doreen and Donald Smith, Angela and Donald Valone,

With their help we raised nearly $15,000! And with help from you, people on the lift will soon be raised up too!

NEWS FROM THE DE LA SALLE SCHOOL
(516) 379-8660
Because of the generosity of the folks associated with the Old Westbury Summer Camp ten of
our students just concluded two weeks of swimming and other activities on the grounds of
Holy Child Academy in Old Westbury. Transportation costs were covered due to the
contributions made by those who attended our Gala and donated to procure “Camp
Balloons”. Thanks to all who enabled our young men to enrich their summer with this
experience. Each of our students was grateful for this special summer adventure.
In addition, because of the kindness of the owners of Mailbu Beach Club in Lido Beach three of our young men
are participating in their special sleep away program for a week.
It is a special blessing for these thirteen students of The De La Salle School to have the chance to enjoy the
experiences and the change of venue and change of pace that these summer camp opportunities provide for
them.

Scripture Reflection
“Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two” (See Mark 6:7-13).
In today’s readings we find one of the most moving statements from the Old Testament.
The prophet Amos is rejected and asked to leave and prophesy elsewhere. His reply? “I
was a shepherd and a dresser of sycamores. The Lord took me from following the flock,
and said to me, Go, prophesy to my people Israel.” (See Amos 7:12-15) Amos obeyed God.
Our Blessed Mother, Mary, did likewise, when asked by God to bear His Son, she replied:
“I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” God calls
us from wherever we are, it doesn’t matter how unworthy we may feel, or what our
profession is. He says to us, “Go, prophesy to my people,” and we must. Do you have a
friend, an acquaintance, a family member, a companion at work going in the wrong
direction? Then, you know what God expects you to do. Be like Amos. Obey like Mary.

FAITH AND THE ROMAN MISSAL
PRAYERS FROM THE ROMAN MISSAL THAT YOU MAY NEVER HEAR
(WITH HELP FROM POPE SAINT JOHN PAUL II)
“2. In their journey towards the "mountain of God, Christ the Lord" (Roman Missal, Opening Prayer of the Mass in
honour of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, 16 July), the various generations of Carmel, from the beginning until today,
have sought to model their lives on Mary's example. In Carmel therefore and in every soul moved by tender affection
for the Blessed Virgin and Mother, there has thrived a contemplation of her, who from the beginning knew how to
open herself to hearing God's Word
and to obeying His will (Lk 2: 19, 51).
For Mary, taught and formed by the
Spirit (cf. Lk 2: 44-50), was able by
faith to understand her own history (cf.
Lk 1: 46-55) and, docile to the Divine
promptings,
"advanced
in
her
pilgrimage of faith, and faithfully
persevered in her union with her Son
unto the cross, where she stood, in
keeping with the Divine plan (cf. Jn
19: 25), enduring with her Onlybegotten Son the intensity of His
suffering and associating herself with
His sacrifice in her mother's heart"
(Lumen gentium, n. 58).
3. Contemplation of the Virgin presents
her Son growing up in Nazareth (cf. Lk
Palestine, helps Him at the wedding at
the Cross, becomes the Mother
to all people when Jesus Himself
(cf. Jn 19: 26). As Mother of the
the disciples in "constant prayer" (Acts
anticipates in herself what will one day
enjoyment of Trinitarian life, she is
spreads the protective mantle of her
pilgrimage to the holy mountain of
her to us as a loving Mother who sees
2: 40, 52), follows Him on the roads of
Cana (cf. Jn 2: 5) and, at the foot of
associated with His offering and given
entrusts her to His beloved disciple
Church, the Blessed Virgin is one with
1: 14); as the new Woman who
come to pass for us all in the full
taken up into Heaven from where she
mercy over her children on their
glory.
Such a contemplative attitude of mind and heart prompts admiration for the Virgin's experience of faith and love; she
already lives in herself all that every believer desires and hopes to attain in the mystery of Christ and the Church
(cf. Sacrosanctum Concilium, n. 103; Lumen gentium, n. 53).”

Wade no resolvió

Mientras somos
jóvenes, somos propensos a ignorar la vejez, como si fuese una enfermedad que hay que mantener alejada;
estamos acostumbrados a descartar gente.
hijos? −Bien, bien. −¿Cuántos hijos tiene? −Muchos. − ¿Y vienen a visitarla?

“Yo
soy . . . pastor y cultivador de higos. El Señor me sacó de junto al rebaño y me dijo: ‘Ve y
profetiza a mi pueblo Israel.’” (Vea Amós 7, 12-15) Amós obedeció a Dios.

SENDING
THEM
TWO BY TWO
Jesus summoned the Twelve
and began to send them out
two by two and gave them
authority over unclean
spirits. He instructed them
to take nothing for the
journey but a walking stick
… and to wear sandals but
not a second tunic. He said
to them, “Whenever you
enter a house, stay there
until you leave. Whatever
place does not welcome you
or listen to you, leave there
and shake the dust off your
feet in testimony against
them.” So they went off
and preached repentance.
