Dear Tribal Member:
I would like to share some morc of the
infonnation I received 011 the National
American Indian Leadership and Agriculture Conference that I allended in
Utah last April.
The following noles were given to
p3J1icipanls in a workshop on managing
siress. Tbe material was prepared for the
conference by Jeff and Belly Simons of
Indian 0.0.. Inc.
Maaqf-c Stnss
If you ha\'C stress in your life it is
b«au~ you choose to judge situations
and people in a way tMI fills you wilh
tension. Stress doesn't always "hap-
pen"
10
you nor were you born a
"stressful person."
Over~o'Ork doesn't cause stress - bul
over-worry. a feeling unneeded. and unimportant will give rise to stress.
Feeling unappreciated. doing repeti·
tive tasks. and perfonning non-crc:ativt
chores can cause you to quickly lose
self-respect and cause internal siren.
There are attitudes Ihat cre:Jte need·
less anxiety. Some oflhese uuitudes and
personality traits typical of a person
under stress are:
I. Unresolved relationlihips with a
friend. an ncquaintance. a !iPOU~. a
child. co·worker. etc. Also car·
rying a grudge.
2. Impatience - an internal stewin{!:
about the rcrformance of others and
never being at peace.
J. Inabilit)· to relax - constant
pushing vs. being OO\y.
4. ExplO!ii\'enelos and anger-contant
expending of neg:Hin energy.
5. Perfectionilom - to the point of
self-rejection at failure.
6. Excessive l'ompctition - always
making comparisons and compet·
ing with tithers.
7. ~ck of self·impor1an~ - belit·
tling own role and suffering an in·
neT contempt.
8. Rigidity - al\\'ays argumentive.
inOexible. fearful of change.
9. Lack of humor and enthusiasm seething inside. full ot self reo
proach. sour attitudes.
10. Resignation.

to remember.
• Use leisure activities to relieve

ph)'sically. or a (;umhination urlhe twu"!
How can you tell'!
• Practke worry l·onlrul - il can be
done!
• Ask yourself. "What's the worse
Ihal could h3ppcn'!"!t'1\ help pUlthings
in pc:rspcctive.
• Set priorities - ClojlCl:i01l1y if jug(!Iing many lasks in a day. Usc a list of
•• /\ ., prillfities which you do first •.. B"
Iisl- less urgent andlhe ''C'' list which
is Ihe least urgent. This gives you a feeling lit' (."ORlml.
• Sct aside sume self-indulgent time
every day - even if only liflcen minules! Personal time is as important a...
daily duties.
• Evaluale your OIt1itude toward the
"has..lcs" in your life. Identify situatiull!' lhal l'OIUSC you to fed uptight and
yuu may be able to emS(: the source of
suess by changing lhe way you view it.
• Analyze the way you successfully
coprd with a tense situation. Was it
change in your behavior"! In your atti·
tude'! Physicalliituation? Become aware
of your altematives.
• When slruggling with a problem.
Slale it out loud. Your unspoken reasons
may not always be the real reasons.
• Remind yourself that not everyone
has to like you. At times. it's important
to be able to do wilhout a good opinion
from others.
• Exercise regularly. The body's
physical condition determines it's abil·
ity to withstand stress. Worse situation:
An overweight smoker who exercises
very liule.
• If you suffer from anxiety. depression. frequent headaches. ele., consider
gelling outside help. professional
counseling, or psychiatric help from a
qualified recommended person through
social services or advisors.
• Above all else, love and respect
yourself al all times. Actually stress is
nothing more lhan a severe fonn of self
rejection. You then become a victim of
your own auitudes. People who success·
fully handle busy, demanding lives are
adepl at these principles. bUI also have a
generous dose of self-confidence. Most
people spend their entire lives trying to
generate. maintain it. or trying 10 regain
it. A great deal of se:lf<onfidence can
come from learning to conquer and man·
age stress in )'our life!
The above material is inlended to be
helpful 10 you. Practice understanding.

IT'S CHlLOCCO'S
LAST POW
WOW
By Sonya Colbel"l
Tulsa World Correspondent
The following anicle is being reo
prinlcd witl'llhe permission of the Tulsa
World.
Fortht pasl96 years, the pow wow at
Chilocco Indian School has been • spirited celebration.
The mood was different SlIturday
nighl. Chilocco Ilc:ld its lasl pow wow.
The federal government is closing the
school.
Present and fonner s(udents' reaclions range (rom bcwildermenl. 10 sadness, to anger.
"Every year, we'd hear they were
going to close Ihe school. Now, they've
done it," said Mrs. Medora Foudray.
81.of Arkansas City. Kan. The Pot'WI-
[omi Indian graduated from Chilocco in
1918. She says the school was aimasl
sclf·sufficienl then.
"We had a dairy whcn I went 10
school here. There were cherry and ap-
pie orchards. We had a large herd of beef
cattle. too:'
Disciplined students rose to a whistle
at 5:30 every morning and marched to
the cafeteria. Mrs. Foudray said girls
and boys were separated and weren't
allowed even to wave 10 each other.
Some fanner graduates contend that
recently softened rules have hun the Indian and consequently played a role in
Chilocco's end.
"The Bureau of Indian Affairs put a
clamp on how these kids could be disciplined:' said Jack Anquoe, a Kiowa
from Tulsa. "The kids became defiant,
and the teachers' hands were tied."
, Enrollment began to decline. Many
~'~felr- the'~~cfioof ~ystem' should
have bet:n overhauled rather than destroyed,
"The government has broken every
treaty they've made with us." said Anquae. "This closing is just anolher
broken treaty. "
Sammy Tonekei While, 3 Kiowa
from Oklahoma City, pUI it anolher way:
"It's a sublle approach 10 lndian gena. : ide."
While said closing Chilocco is just the
beginning: at least three other Indian
schools are likely to be closed soon.
A Ponca Indian said such school closings hun Indian culture. "We can never
be while people." said 74-year-old Carrie Tyndell of Ponca City. "You'll never change us. When the Indian schools
(Ire all gone, I don'l know what we'll
do."
A sludent gr.tdu3ting Ihis year, Paul
Whilehorn, said now ChiJocco is not
much differenl from public schools.
"Oul we study vocations like printing
and auto mechanics. It's Ihe only one
with vocation courses that Indians can
benefit from."
This year's Chilocco Indian princess.
IS-year-old Jeanne High Wolf said,
"This is one of the best schools I've ever
been to, and the campus is beautiful."
Noone knows what will happen to the
campus wilh its old stone buildings bordered by trees and clipped grass. But a
91·year-old Apache graduate of Ihe
school, who spent pan of his childhood
as a prisoner of war at Ft. Sill. had some
ideas.
.'They should tum the land back over
to the Indians." said HllIT)' Perico of
Arkansas City. Kan,

OUIATANON - This is the fonn 10
which lhe name of tile old French post on
the north side ofche Wabash, just below
Lafayeuc, finally scttled aflereltisting in
at least "57 varietics." The title of the
tribe of the Miamis. for which it was
named, ranged from Ouaouiatanonouek
to Ouias in the French. and from
Wawijachtenokes 10 Weas in English.
The pronunciation of the full name is
Wah'-we·ah'-tun·ong. It was the common Algonquian name of the Detroit
River, and of Detroit. Schooicraft derives il from "wa-w~-a, a round about
course: ah-tun, a channel: and ang, locality." Our tribe probably took its
name from the Delroit River, for, in
1687. Durantage speaks of "the Shawnees and Miamis, for a long time proprietors of the said country of the Detroit
River and Lake Eric. from which they
had retired for some time for their
greater ulility;" i.e .• 10 La Salle's
colony on Ihe Illinois. 1Rc name is probably not of Miami origin, for in their
language wah'-we-ah appears 10 be restricted to the meaning "round:' while
"curved" or "crooked" are denoted by
wah-kakwh': (hus the full moon is
