2015 Business Expo & Career Fair
This year’s Business Expo is incorporating a very important theme to area businesses and individuals:
career opportunities.
The 2015 Business Expo & Career Fair will be held Friday, October 16, 2015 in the Williams Conference
Center at Lewis-Clark State College from 10AM-4PM. Local businesses will showcase their company
and services at their booth, promoting to area students and the general public who may, or may not,
be looking for career opportunities. Businesses are encouraged, but not required, to accept resumes
for potential hiring, internships, or volunteer opportunities. There will also be various seminars and
classes throughout the day presenting on topics such as: resume help, interviewing tips & tricks,
Workplace Wellness, combating turnover, establishing goals, and more. These seminars will benefit
both employees and employers.
Due to limited vendor spaces, there will be a limit on the number of businesses allowed to represent
a specific category, so get your applications in today! Applications are due to the Chamber no later
than October 2, 2015. Sponsorship opportunities are also available if you or your business would like
to help support this unique Business Expo & Career Fair.
If your business would like to participate in the 2015 Business Expo & Career Fair, please contact the
Chamber at 509.758.7712 or [email protected] for an application.

Leadership LC Valley Retreat
I was lucky enough to have spent the weekend of August 21st to the 23rd at Palouse Divide Lodge with a very special
group of people. We were there for the opening retreat of Leadership LC Valley #1, or LLCV1. What an amazing
group of visionary, hopeful, dedicated, committed leaders, and future leaders of our Valley! This group includes
professionals from city government, leaders of non-profits, small business owners, health care professionals,
engineers, winery owners, employees from manufacturing, human resources professionals, professionals from
transportation, insurance professionals, architects, and professionals from media and advertising. The diversity
of thought and opinion was compelling, but the key unifying thread that tied the group together the entire
weekend was an overwhelming desire to make our Valley the best: the best place to start a business; the best
place to raise a family; the best place to find quality health care; the best place to get a quality education.
SCOTT CORBITT
Chairman, Lewis Clark
Valley Chamber
Sr. HR Manager,
Clearwater Paper
The LLCV1 retreat was a mix of learning, networking, communicating, planning, and enjoying each other,
not to mention eating some of the best sweet potato biscuits we have ever experienced! This team learned
about each other’s strengths and weaknesses, passions and dreams, and looked to the future of the Valley
with an eye on continuous improvement. The environment was safe, yet challenging; professional, yet
relaxing. While a little smoky at the Lodge, greeter dogs Max and Dozer made sure we always found our
way back to the front porch. As I was driving home from the retreat, I realized that the weight and skepticism
of the daily grind that I may have carried on my shoulders leading up to the retreat had been replaced
by excitement and inspiration for both the future of the Valley and for the potential of the Leadership LC
Valley program. With this group, these plank owners of the program, leading the way, and amazing classes
to follow in the coming years, the future of our great home just might look a little brighter. Hopefully the
members of LLCV1 can also see the benefit to themselves and to their employers/businesses to being involved,
connected, and informed. Truly an amazing start to this program.
And to my friends at LLCV 1, there is little doubt that a Journey of 377 steps always leads to Bacon. Thanks for a
great start. -Scott

Idaho Foodbank Breaks Ground
On Wednesday, August 26, the Lewis Clark Valley Chamber of
Commerce staff, Board Members, and Ambassadors, along with
many supporting individuals and businesses in the LC Valley, helped
congratulate the Idaho Foodbank with their groundbreaking ceremony
at the site of their new Lewiston facility. Scheduled to open Spring
2016, the much-needed facility will increase dry, cold, and freezer
space, accommodate commercial trucks and trailers with loading
docks and bays, increase distribution access and speeds, and increase
community engagement opportunities. Cari Miller, Branch Manager
for North Central Idaho Foodbank here in Lewiston, explained the
inner-workings of the Idaho Foodbank and how they rely on hundreds
of volunteers to accomplish everything they do. The Idaho Foodbank
also relies on the donations from individuals, organizations, and
foundations to support its mission.
Thank you to everyone who contributes to the Idaho Foodbank in one
way or another. We are so excited for this fresh approach to feeding
our neighbors in need in North Central Idaho.

Support Alzheimer’s Through Wine
Do you like wine? Games? Supporting a good cause?
September marks World Alzheimer’s Month, and the Alzheimer’s
Association will be holding its annual “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” in
the Lewis-Clark Valley for the first time on September 26.
To help raise funds for Alzheimer’s research, Wedgewood Terrace
Assisted Living will be conducting a new funding event: a “Wine
Walk,” modeled after the traditional cake walks.
Ticket holders will walk around a numbered path during musical
interludes, and when the music stops, a number will be drawn. The
person standing on that numbered square will win a bottle of wine.
Numerous bottles of wine will be given away during the Wine Walk.
Tickets are $15 a piece and are limited in number. To purchase or
reserve your tickets, stop in or call Wedgewood Terrace at (208) 7434545.
To help support Alzheimer’s research, Wedgewood Terrace is also
accepting cash donations as well as bottles of wine for the event.
KLEW-TV weatherman Keith Havens will serve as the musical DJ and
master of ceremonies for the event.
The Wine Walk will occur on Tuesday, September 15, starting at
7PM. It will take place at New Bridges Community Church at 2101
8th Street, across from Wedgewood Terrace. Light refreshments will
be served.

Even in towns and cities, the pace of life is gentler there; people
stop to chat in the streets, they are happy to give directions to
tourists, they are glad you have come and they are sorry to see you
go. Ireland has much to offer everyone. From storybook castles to
magnificent gardens, wide open spaces to the bustle of international
cities, breathtaking natural scenery to man-made megalithic
structures, Ireland opens her arms and welcomes you to explore her
ancient sites, traverse her green fields and discover her treasures.
The scenery is gorgeous, the weather is mild (though changeable),
there is a rich cultural heritage to discover, and a wealth of music
and stories to share. But the real joy of Ireland lies in the friendliness
of the people, the warmth of their welcome, and the ease with which
they make you feel at home.
Enjoy highlights such as Muckrose House, Cliffs of Moher, St.
Patricks Catherdral, Wicklow National Park, Adare Village, Blarney
Castle, Trinity College, Book of Kells, Old James Whiskey Distillery,
and more!
“This is truly an amazing opportunity to discover all that Ireland has
to offer. We at the Lewis Clark Valley Chamber of Commerce are
so happy to be able to offer these extraordinary trips,” said Kristin
Kemak, President/CEO. For more information, please contact the
Chamber at 509.758.7712.

What's Happening with the LCYP
Here is a look ahead at LC Young Professionals events coming up
over the next few months…and a few other things of interest.
For now, we’re sticking with our same schedule of doing a coffee
meet-up on the first Wednesday morning, and the networking meeting on the third Wednesday evening of each month.
Everyone seems to be running in so many different directions over
the summer, so we lighten the load over those few months.

Volunteers Needed!
The Emerich Playground, known as “Castle Park” to area children,
is a community park, located on the grounds of McGhee Elementary
School in Lewiston, Idaho. It is utilized as a school playground
during the school day, but is heavily used by the entire community at
other times. It was built over 20 years ago by a group of committed
volunteers, with support of the City of Lewiston, the McGhee PTA,
and the Lewiston School District. Because of its age and subsequent
safety issues, this wonderful facility must be replaced.
Thanks to incredible support from individuals, organizations, and
businesses, we are close to our fundraising goal, and have scheduled
the complete rebuild of the magnificent facility this fall. We are
asking for your help.
The success of this project depends on volunteer support from our
community. In fact, we need over 400 volunteers to make this vision
a reality! We will be building from 8:00 to 9:00 PM September 30
- October 4. All ages (over 10) and skill levels are welcome. We’d
love to have entire families, business groups, or organizations help
us leave a lasting legacy for thousands of local youth. You can help
for a few hours or a few days. Meals and childcare will be provided,
in a fun, energetic, and safe working environment. We also are seeking donations of tools, such as power drills, ladders,
tape measures, etc. All tools will be returned in the same, or better,
condition.
Wouldn’t you like to tell your children and grandchildren that you
helped build their new favorite playground?

American Insurance Agents Provide
Employee Health Coverage Options
Local agents with American Insurance in Lewiston can help area
business owners find qualified individual health insurance coverage
for their employees, spouses and dependents to meet health care
mandates.
“We provide free quotes and free enrollment assistance in
Washington and Idaho for business owners and their employees,
including providing multiple options for their consideration,” said
Dave Root, Certified Insurance Counselor with American Insurance.
“We can also explain the differences between each one, investigate
cost sharing possibilities that are available and we also offer
enrollment assistant to complete the process and get the insurance
coverage that your employees need to have.”
Agents can share details about all the options that are available,
whether an employer chooses a company sponsored group medical
plan or to have an agent make a presentation to employees so each
one can sign up for an individual or family insurance plan.
Certified health insurance agents can also help employees find
lower cost options with the use of Advanced Premium Tax Credits
through the exchanges in Idaho and Washington. The Agency has
a relationship with many health care companies, including Regence
BlueShield of Idaho, Premera Blue Cross, and Blue Cross of Idaho.
“All Affordable Care Act plans are guaranteed regardless of health
conditions, so we can find a personalized plan to meet their specific
household needs,” Root added. “In the end, we can provide your
employees with adequate coverage to protect themselves and
their family members, while also eliminating penalties for being
uninsured.”

medical plans at www.americaninsuranceid.com.

4 Pillars of Communication
I am often asked, “How do I better communicate with people?”
Personally, I have found it to be most effective to listen closely and
then be very direct, say what I mean, mean what I say, and to get
to the point as quickly as possible, allowing the other person to use
the information given in whatever way they choose. I did my part,
now it’s up to them.
I believe that so often folks communicate poorly, avoiding extreme
clarity for fear of being wrong. Another possibility is they are
completely unaware of their ramblings; they are so caught up in
making sure they are being heard that they just keep going on and
on. A verbal dance ensues that has no point, goes nowhere, and
produces no results.
To assist those who when asked “What time is it” and are compelled
to explain how to build the watch instead of just stating the time,
here are some tried and true “Pillars of Communication” that I put
together to help you self-check and see if your really communicating
or just doing a verbal dance.
Pillar 1: Concise – Clear and Direct with an Expected Outcome. Before
saying what’s on your mind, make sure you understand why you
are even saying anything in the first place. What is the purpose of
speaking? Are you sharing information that will be of use to the
listener? Are you answering a question, requesting something, or
just sharing unnecessary information that will go nowhere, serve no
one, and change nothing? You have heard the saying “Talking just
to hear oneself speak.”
Pillar 2: Pertinent – Does the Person You’re Communicating with
NEED to Know….. Or is it just “Reply All” attitude. Often details
are shared with individuals who have no need for the information.
You know what I am talking about. You too have been the victim
of the “Reply All” emails. Where one mass email goes out, and
a conversation ensues that has nothing to do with anyone except
2 people out of 20! Make sure that the information that you are
sharing is pertinent to the individual whose time you are taking up.
Otherwise, you could fall prey to the glassy eyed look of distraction
from the listener.
SEPTEMBER 2015
LEWIS CLARK VALLEY CHAMBER CONNECTION
Pillar 3: Direct and Organized – Can the Information Shared be
Followed Up On or Convey Your Opinion? At meetings, whether it is
staff, committee, or even board meetings, sometimes folks raise their
hand and regale us for several minutes about a thought they are
having. And when done, I think to myself, as I am sure others are…
..”Was there a point to all that? Or was that person just compelled to
“hear themselves speak?” They not only had no point, but repeated
the same dialog five different ways. Make sure when you put your
thoughts together to share information that you have a reason.
Pillar 4 – Listen – Listening is Truly a Lost Art. The really good
communicators are actually silent most of the time. You will be
amazed at what you actually hear if you quiet down a bit. Then
communication on your part is really quite easy. Hear what is
being said, ask the right questions, and proceed to follow-up or
to dialog with pertinent information that will add to the situation,
instead of stealing the proverbial ball and running with it, leaving
the person who began the conversation in the dust. You’ve had those
conversations; you walk in an office, with a very clear request in
mind, and leave 20 minutes later feeling as if you’ve been hit in
the head with a verbal whiffle ball and….the request was never
addressed at all. Oops, now you have to go back in again.
So folks, here’s the deal. Communication is the cornerstone of….
well, everything…..and the most abused. Make a personal
commitment to be more concise, pertinent, direct, and organized in
your communications and most of all, commit to opening your mouth
less and opening your ears more. What’s that old saying? God gave
us two ears and one mouth for a reason.

Marketing Matters
DELIVERING YOUR BRAND
Since ancient times owners of livestock have branded their cattle
with a permanent mark to show their distinct ownership. The brand
helps the public identify to which ranch the cattle belongs. The brand
is original, distinctive, and proprietary.
In the modern marketplace, businesses have a brand, too. It isn’t an
iron brand, heated and stamped onto their products; it is more like
a distinct image, feeling, or sense about what makes that company
original, distinctive, and proprietary.
Although business branding doesn’t require long, hot, and dusty
cattle drives, branding irons and burning cow hides, it does require
understanding the core values of your business, diligence in staying
true to your message, and consistency in your marketing efforts.
A good brand that is respected and valued reflects well on your
business and is prized by your customers.
For more information on building your company brand, please
contact me.
Your brand says a lot about your business and what a consumer
can expect when dealing with you. Your brand is your company
personality. At every touch point, the customer is exposed to your
persona. Your brand involves not just your logo, but also the feeling
prospects get when entering your store or office, speaking to your
staff in person, on the telephone, or via email. It involves how you
communicate through your radio or video ads; how you project
visually on your website, billboards, print or social media. Your
brand gives the public a sense of who you are as a company.
Written by Judy Broumley, Marketing Specialist
Do you know what your brand is saying? Are you delivering a clear,
consistent, reliable message? If you are not sure, it’s time to examine
the core values of your company. Begin by asking yourself what
it is your business is passionate about? In running your business,
what means so much to you that you would never give it up? Once
you know your core values, you can formulate how you wish to
be perceived in the marketplace. From here, you build all of your
customer touchpoints to be consistent with your values. Then when
people think of your business, they will instantly know what you are
about. Successful marketing is delivering your brand to the masses
and instilling in them a desire to get to know you better.

Volunteer for the Lewiston Roundup
The Lewiston Roundup Association, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit
organization and has several opportunities available for volunteers.
This year we will be celebrating our 81st year as part of the Lewis Clark
Valley. Our organization not only produces the only professional
sporting event in the area, the Lewiston Roundup, but also maintains
a full equestrian facility year round. We host many events for local
4H groups, high school rodeo clubs, and other youth and equestrian
organizations. Along with these activities, we support many local,
nonprofit organizations such as the Gina Quesenberry Foundation,
Light A Candle, Lion’s Clubs, Lewiston Clarkston Service League, to
name a few. Throughout the year, we provide financial assistance
to support these organizations in achieving their community service
mission.
Our annual Roundup is always held the week after Labor Day, this
year it is September 9th through 12th. This is, by far, our largest
event and where our need for volunteers is highest. Our volunteer
needs typically include ticket sellers, token sellers, merchandise
sellers, and money and token counters. The only requirements
needed are general math skills. There will be a LRA Director or
support staff on hand for questions and instructions.

Be Cautious with
Business Financial Information
You've probably been hearing a lot lately about tax identity
theft. News organizations report these events when thieves steal
the personal information of customers or employees from large
businesses or government entities. But tax identity theft happens on
a smaller scale too — and your business could be a target.
Be cautious with your EIN. Use IRS "Form 8822-B, Change of
Address or Responsible Party," to keep current your business mailing
address, location, and identity of responsible parties such as officers
and partners. If you receive a CP148B notice from the IRS regarding
a change of address, verify the change is correct.
Here are two ways your company, and your company's reputation,
can be hurt by this crime.
Contact us whenever you have concerns about personal or business
identity theft. We'll help you assess the risk and work out a plan for
recovering from the fraud.
•Your credit. Your federal employer identification number or EIN
is analogous to a social security number. Thieves can use your
EIN for similar purposes, including opening business credit cards,
establishing bank or merchant processing accounts, or applying
for credit lines with suppliers.

•Bogus tax liability. You' re required to use your EIN as an identifying
number on payroll reports such as Forms W-2. Criminals can use a
stolen EIN to create fake returns that report non-existent salaries
to the IRS or your state department of revenue. The result? The
thief gets fraudulent tax refunds and you get notices stating that
you've underpaid your payroll tax liabilities.
