Why do we call them
porch dresses?

We have a store in Ocean Grove, New Jersey.
It is in every way an old fashioned town with
Victorian buildings and wrap around porches.
Our customers started coming into the shop
and asking—‘where are your cotton porch
dresses?’ They were talking about our 1940s
inspired house dresses. Originating in a time
when women put on a dress in the morning,
an apron at lunch and hung the laundry in the
breeze in the afternoon. They represent an image of everyday beauty that I find captivating.
These are dresses I remembered my mother
wearing—simple, and confident with pretty
florals and calicos—and big pockets for small
toys, hankies, a precious recipe—or a phone!
So—that’s why we call them porch dresses—
because that’s what you told us they were.

I looked around and saw all kinds of different people.

It was on Canal Street in Manhattan in 1976. I bought my
first piece of treasured Victoriana with the goal of making
something similar. It was an old Victorian blouse in near
perfect condition. An eyelet hem, a pleated bodice, tiny mother
of pearl buttons, fine stitching, detailed shaping on the back—
I loved the piece.
It had the soft hand of history, balanced between grace and
modesty. I chose the gracefulness, but the modest aspect has
inserted itself too. You see how the past influences us?

Provence is in the South of France. Far
from sophisticated Paris lies a region famous for its color. Do you know that I had
never been to Provence until last summer,
even though I had designed linens in the
Provencal palette for 40 years? I had never
felt its yellow sun or brilliant blue sky,
but somehow, when I combined blue and
yellow, the word Provence just came to
me. Another way to say Provence is:
yellow sun, blue sky. And now the love
affair continues.
