State fair opens Thursday with new attractions
SYRACUSE — New attractions at the
2010 New York State Fair will let visitors
walk on water, fly through the air, gasp at
daredevil high divers and get up close and
personal with tigers, baboons, an elephant
and other wild animals.
“We want to make sure the fair is more
exciting and entertaining every year, and
we think fairgoers are going to love this
year’s additions,” fair Director Dan O’Hara
said. “We’re offering lots of new attractions, but people will still be able to enjoy
most of the traditional activities they are
accustomed to, like the butter sculpture
and other fair favorites.”
New attractions this year at the 12-day
fair, which opens Thursday, include:
 The Ejection Seat. This giant slingshot
acts like a reverse bungee jump, firing riders 155 feet into the sky, then letting them
bounce up and down above the Fairgrounds until they scream to a stop. The
attraction is one of only six of its kind traveling through the United States this summer. It will be located in the Adventure
Zone between the Horticulture Building
and the grandstand.
 Eurobubbles. This unique attraction
lets people climb inside giant transparent
balls, similar to those used by pet hamsters
and gerbils, and roll around on the surface
of a pool of water. It may be the closest
people can get to actually walking on water. It will be in the Adventure Zone.
 Wild About Monkeys. Also in the Adventure Zone, this is the only traveling animal exhibit in the world that features
trained baboons, including a ferocious-

SACKETS HARBOR
OPERA HOUSE EVENTS: Old-fashioned comedy play
slated this weekend; ‘blast’ with 2 bands on Sept. 4
EDWARDS — Booing, hissing and
cheering are encouraged as the Grasse
River Players present an old-fashioned
comedy melodrama, “‘Double Take at
Beatrice’s Boarding House’ or ‘Things Ain’t
Always What They Seem,’” in performances at 7:30 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday
at the Edwards Opera House, 161 Main St.
Beatrice, the young and beautiful (but
somewhat longwinded) owner of Beatrice’s Boarding House is in distress. If business doesn’t pick up soon, the honorable
establishment will have to close its doors
forever. If our poor heroine loses her
abode, she and her closest friends will find
themselves on the town’s streets. Luther
Swett, the cad, not only wants the boarding house, but has his eyes on the beautiful
Beatrice. Beatrice has a group of daffy
boarders — deaf, cranky, ugly — you
name it. To save the boarding house from
the clutches of Luther Swett, she decides to
put on a talent show.
Director Elaine Kuracina is this year’s recipient of the St Lawrence County Artist

Wind quintet plays Sunday in Sackets
WATERFRONT SERIES:
Season finale set Sept. 5
with deSantis big band
SACKETS HARBOR — The Finger Lakes
Wind Quintet will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday in this season’s 10th concert in the
Sackets Harbor Historical Society’s Concerts on
the Waterfront series.
The quintet, lauded
in April as part of the
Trinity Concert Series,
has performed widely
across the region since it
was formed two years
ago. Flute, clarinet, Maria deSantis
French horn, oboe and
bassoon blend in genres from waltzes to
ragtime, semi-classics to show tunes. All
classically trained musicians, the members of the quintet also play with larger
groups, including the Auburn Chamber
Orchestra, the Onondaga orchestra, the
Skaneateles Community Band and the
Lafayette Band.
The concert series concludes Sept. 5 as
it has for the past seven years: with the
Mario de Santis Orchestra and its signature big band sound.
Featuring vocals by Maria de Santis, Keith Condon and blues artist Israel Hagan,
the orchestra is in its 62nd year performing
in and around Syracuse. It has opened for
many big name performers and performs
at festivals, black-tie galas and Syracuse’s
many concert series.
The orchestra gave its first performance
at Lincoln Auditorium in Syracuse on May
22, 1947, and continues with its repertoire

of jazz to contemporary music. It features
special arrangements of big band, swing,
60’s and 70’s, jazz and current selections
that are custom written each year by Jay
Owen and Joe Riposo.
The deSantis Orchestra has provided 25
to 36 piece backups for national artists
such as Marvin Hamlisch, Bernadette Peters, Natalie Cole and Little Anthony.
Joining pianist-conductor Mario de
Santis, who has earned a Syracuse area
music award (SAMMY) for lifetime
achievement, are vocalist Keith Condon;
Mr. de Santis’s daughter Maria deSantis,
2005 SAMMY hall of fame winner; multiple SAMMY winner Israel Hagan; SAMMYwinning guitarist Mark Copani; bassist
Dave Welch and SAMMY winner Jimmy
Johns. The sax section features SAMMY
hall of famer Joe Riposo, Brian Scherer,
Dick Simiele and Paul Dipastena. Trumpeters include Steve Carney, Bull Crist and
Tony Godaoy. The trombonist is Bill
Palange; stage manager and sound engineer is Rob Cleland.
The Concerts on the Waterfront is a free
program of the Sackets Harbor Historical
Society. Major sponsors for the series are
the Watertown Savings Bank, the village of
Sackets Harbor and the Town of
Hounsfield Committee for the Advancement of Tourism. This event is made possible, in part, by the New York State Council
on the Arts Decentralization program, administered in Jefferson, Lewis and St.
Lawrence counties by the St. Lawrence
County Council on the Arts. Additional
support is from businesses and organizations throughout the north country, and
the tradition of “pass the hat.”
Concerts are held from 3 to 5 on Sunday
afternoons at the Battlefield State Park in
the village. The rain site is the United Presbyterian Church, 101 S. Broad St.

support is from businesses and organizations throughout the north country, and
the tradition of “pass the hat.”
Concerts are held from 3 to 5 on Sunday
afternoons at the Battlefield State Park in
the village. The rain site is the United Presbyterian Church, 101 S. Broad St.

SACKETS HARBOR
OPERA HOUSE EVENTS: Old-fashioned comedy play
slated this weekend; ‘blast’ with 2 bands on Sept. 4
EDWARDS — Booing, hissing and
cheering are encouraged as the Grasse
River Players present an old-fashioned
comedy melodrama, “‘Double Take at
Beatrice’s Boarding House’ or ‘Things Ain’t
Always What They Seem,’” in performances at 7:30 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday
at the Edwards Opera House, 161 Main St.
Beatrice, the young and beautiful (but
somewhat longwinded) owner of Beatrice’s Boarding House is in distress. If business doesn’t pick up soon, the honorable
establishment will have to close its doors
forever. If our poor heroine loses her
abode, she and her closest friends will find
themselves on the town’s streets. Luther
Swett, the cad, not only wants the boarding house, but has his eyes on the beautiful
Beatrice. Beatrice has a group of daffy
boarders — deaf, cranky, ugly — you
name it. To save the boarding house from
the clutches of Luther Swett, she decides to
put on a talent show.
Director Elaine Kuracina is this year’s recipient of the St Lawrence County Artist

State fair opens Thursday with new attractions
SYRACUSE — New attractions at the
2010 New York State Fair will let visitors
walk on water, fly through the air, gasp at
daredevil high divers and get up close and
personal with tigers, baboons, an elephant
and other wild animals.
“We want to make sure the fair is more
exciting and entertaining every year, and
we think fairgoers are going to love this
year’s additions,” fair Director Dan O’Hara
said. “We’re offering lots of new attractions, but people will still be able to enjoy
most of the traditional activities they are
accustomed to, like the butter sculpture
and other fair favorites.”
New attractions this year at the 12-day
fair, which opens Thursday, include:
 The Ejection Seat. This giant slingshot
acts like a reverse bungee jump, firing riders 155 feet into the sky, then letting them
bounce up and down above the Fairgrounds until they scream to a stop. The
attraction is one of only six of its kind traveling through the United States this summer. It will be located in the Adventure
Zone between the Horticulture Building
and the grandstand.
 Eurobubbles. This unique attraction
lets people climb inside giant transparent
balls, similar to those used by pet hamsters
and gerbils, and roll around on the surface
of a pool of water. It may be the closest
people can get to actually walking on water. It will be in the Adventure Zone.
 Wild About Monkeys. Also in the Adventure Zone, this is the only traveling animal exhibit in the world that features
trained baboons, including a ferocious-

Thursday in the first grandstand concert of
