spirit of excellence • Richard Wolf News 03/09 Success factor "customer satisfaction" excellenc spirit of RICHARD WOLF GmbH customer magazine e Editorial / Contents 3 Miscellaneous 1st International Laparoscopy Congress in Shiraz, Iran Advanced Laparoscopy Workshop in Teheran, Iran Stone Therapy OR Course in Riyadh Dear business associates, "Customer satisfaction at a high when the economic situation is at a low" is currently the prime concern of every business. This goes for Richard Wolf as well. "Even closer to our customers and marketing partners" is now written big on the Richard Wolf flag. Because consistent customer orientation today and in future will be the key to our success and continued profitable growth. Particularly in times of economic challenges, we want to do everything to see the crisis as an opportunity to achieve even greater customer orientation, service orientation and quality orientation. Today's situation forces companies to develop only products and systems that improve the productivity of medical personnel and nursing staff and those that not only serve their medical purpose but also represent cost effectiveness. Worldwide, the name of Richard Wolf stands for quality, innovation and a service-oriented expert partner in medical engineering. Satisfied customers mean further decisions to purchase – customer satisfaction is therefore a decisive competitive factor. At the end of the first six months, the order books improved. A wind of change seems to be in the air. With the personal commitment of everyone involved, we have a good basis on which to achieve our goals for 2009. We have established a new training centre in Berlin to present our "core OR concept" and integrated several workstations for training courses as of July 2009. We wish you all enjoyable, refreshing and event-filled holidays and hope you come back ready for a good, vigorous start to continue the successful work through the last few months of the year. 126th Congress of the German Society for Surgery 4 Stone Centre Special Product Specialist Training Successful PiezoLith 3000 Installation in Portugal MegaPulse Demonstration and Workshop MegaPulse Service Training MegaPulse Stone Laser for Bulgaria 6 Miscellaneous Workshop for Arthroscopy of the Hand and Endoscopically Assisted Decompression of the Ulnar Nerve Continuous further Development of the core OR 7 New Products TECAM-3-USB Staff News FRAMELESS The CYCLOPE 8 Ingo Priebe PM gynaecology Meeting Points Congresses / Workshops 2009 P 3000 at the AUA / Chicago Interview: Web Presence With best regards Standards Alfons Notheis Managing Director 2 Beatrice Roth MPB area Berlin 2 8 Editorial Imprint Miscellaneous "Meet the expert" "We believe in flow" 1st International Laparoscopy Congress in Shiraz, Iran Stone Therapy OR Course in Riyadh Along with three guest physicians (Dr. Lang, Dr. Mallwany, Prof. Manncke), Richard Wolf took part in the 1st International Laparoscopy Congress in Shiraz (Iran) as one of the main sponsors. The speakers were able to share personal experience with local colleagues relating to laparoscopic applications in the areas of surgery, gynaecology and urology and to point out the advantages of Richard Wolf products in these areas. This was followed by a "meet-the-expert" session with the guest physicians answering questions from the auditorium. The event was comple- "We believe in flow" – this could have been the motto of the live OR in the King Fahd Hospital in Saudi Arabia held with the excellent support of Dr. Lahme. In these climes with temperatures up to 60°C, urinary stones are a major problem. This means that demand for modern stone therapy with the highest possible stone-free rates is extremely high. Dr. Lahme demonstrated the mini-perc technique and flexible uretero renoscopy using the stone laser. Here, our new flexible URS "the COBRA" was put into PD Dr. Lahme action with its flow characteristics the like of which have never been seen before. Thanks to a new concept, users themselves can decide whether to irrigate through both equal-size working channels or to use continuous irrigation with irrigation and aspiration. With this choice, the user has ideal endoscopic images even in difficult conditions and this is clearly reflected in the quality of the intervention. A special mechanism also allows a laser fibre to remain in the working channel during the entire operation without damaging the channel or diminishing the irrigation capacity. All the participants agreed that you can't beat flow. Especially when the instrument is as user-friendly as our "COBRA". Stefan Gillé ted by a Live OR programme during which Prof. Manncke along with interested Iranian surgeons performed a laparoscopic fundoplication. Stefan Heffner Advanced training for physicians Advanced Laparoscopy Workshop in Teheran, Iran Richard Wolf is committed to supporting advanced training programmes for physicians in the area of laparoscopic surgery. In Teheran (Iran), our agent Aryan Tandorost runs a modern training centre that offers a wide range of training programmes. One particular highlight at the last course made possible by Richard Wolf was a guest paper by Prof. Manncke on the topics of "fundoplication" and "advanced adrenalectomy". Along with participants, the theory could be put into practice in the wet lab using training and animal models. Stefan Heffner Motto of the congress "Humanity through technology" 126th Congress of the German Society for Surgery The 126th Congress of the German Society for Surgery was held this year in Munich under the motto "Humanity through technology". One question raised by the congress president Prof. Schumpelick was "which new developments benefit the patient?". Among the prime concerns of Richard Wolf when developing new products or refining existing ones are the reduction of invasiveness and improvement of the ergonomics for the user. Combined with innovative technology, our products are a major factor in a successful intervention. Once again, this congress showed that our customers like to use this platform to establish personal contact and to learn about new products at the booth. This year, it was pleasing to greet a lot of young surgeons many of whom were particularly interested in the ERAGON compact, our new monopolar instrument series. Stefan Heffner 3 Stone Centre Special Responsibility MegaPulse stone laser Product specialist Maik Bareis is responsible for worldwide sales, marketing and service of our MegaPulse stone laser. After complete renovation of the urological department in recent months, we were the first company to be given access to the new rooms to install our new PiezoLith 3000. The speciality of the system is that the PiezoLith 3000 is equipped with a remote control system that allows personnel to operate the PiezoLith from a separate specially constructed control room. This control room means that personnel are no longer exposed to the usual X-ray radiation. Doctors Bruno Paiva and Sérgio Pereira were happy with the performance Dr. Paiva (left), Dr. Pereira (right) and handling of the PiezoLith 3000 system. During the first commissioning, 3 kidney and 2 ureteric stones were treated successfully. Maik Bareis Training agencies in handling the MegaPulse Product Specialist Training During the product specialist training from June 11 - 15, 2009 in the Richard Wolf "Prima Vista" Academy, one of the main topics was the MegaPulse stone laser. In a detailed presentation, the advantages of the laser were compared with other methods of stone fragmentation. Our participants from Belgium, Brazil, The Czech Republic, Norway, Kazakhstan and England were able to get a feeling for the handling and performance of the MegaPulse laser in "HANDS ON" training in the workshop with our product managers Mrs. Huber and Mr. Becker constantly on hand to give help and advice. Maik Bareis 4 MegaPulse Demonstrations and Workshops During recent months, numerous demonstrations and workshops have been carried out abroad, all of which were successful and reflected the excellent performance of the MegaPulse laser. Demonstrations were arranged in Turkey, Spain, Italy, Portugal and many other countries with the cooperation of our agencies. During these demonstrations, our agen- cies were instructed how to handle the laser. Sales, service and application training was also part of the package. The absolute MegaPulse highlights were our workshops in Greece, Venezuela, Spain and Morocco each of which lasted several days. We will certainly be expanding our laser activities further in the second half of the year. Maik Bareis First basic training in the Prima Vista Academy MegaPulse Service Training On June 25, 2009 we welcomed 6 agencies (Turkey, Morocco, Syria, South Africa, Slovakia and Lebanon) and a Richard Wolf subsidiary (Richard Wolf Belgium) to the first MegaPulse basic training course in the Richard Wolf "Prima Vista" Academy. After a detailed product presentation, the programme also included instruction on the safe use of laser radiation, matching of optical components and troubleshooting. The participants all decided that they wanted to take part in the next advanced training. Maik Bareis Stone Centre Special Top hospital in Sofia installs the new MegaPulse MegaPulse StoneLaser for Bulgaria Our agency Medical Technics Engineering Ltd. in Sofia has achieved a successful introduction of our MegaPulse stone laser in Bulgaria. With the "Hillclinic", we were also able to win an absolutely top hospital that has specialized in VIP clients. The hospital was only opened on June 29, 2009 and has 2 ORs equipped with the latest technology and 8 VIP rooms that stand up to comparison with a 5-star hotel. After its installation and the introductory phase, the physicians Dr. Kalchev and Dr. Botsevsky were extremely happy with the handling and performance of the MegaPulse laser. This training course was supported by Prof. Dr. Peter Hahn (Vulpius hospital, Bad Rappenau) and his team. The first day was devoted solely to arthroscopy of the hand first in theory and then in practice with exercises on specimens. On the second day, the participants had the chance of training in the new endoscopic technique of decompression of the ulnar nerve. After carpal tunnel syndrome, decompression of the ulnar nerve is the second most common nerve compression. With our new set, such nerve disease can be eliminated simply and quickly with a small incision at the elbow. In contrast to open operating methods, the incision at the elbow is only approximately 2 cm long. Starting from this, decompression is performed along the upper arm and lower arm entirely endoscopically. This results in a short rehabilitation time for patients and minimum scarring. Due to the increasing demand for this endoscopic operating method, two courses are planned for the coming year. Nadina Krauß / Dirk Göthel New functions improve the core OR system Continuous further Development of the core OR In view of the constantly growing demands on medical engineering and the increasing standards required of an integrated OR, new functions and further integration of individual devices are continuously in development at Richard Wolf. Years of experience and close cooperation with surgeons have contributed to making our integrated OR system even more ergonomic and efficient to meet exacting customer expectations. With the further development of the core integration module for serial devices, OR lighting and cameras from Trumpf, Berchtold, Dräger, KLS Martin and Maquet can now be integrated in the core OR. Integration of the HF unit from Erbe 6 (type VIO 300D) is also now possible thanks to a core integration module for CAN devices. Both modules allow voice and touchscreen-controlled operation of the individual components. The user interface of the touchscreen monitor has also undergone a complete graphic redesign. The addition of new operator elements makes it easier and faster to select the ever increasing range of device functions. The status area has also been fully revised and now offers the user a clearer overview of the most important device parameters. This guarantees smooth adaptation to the relevant OR situation. New user interface of the touchscreen monitor These requirements also mean adaptations to and updating of the "core.software". The latest version, Release 4.0, is now available. Axel Keller New Products Preview: FRAMELESS – biopsy system without stereotactic frame In cases of lesions in the head, a biopsy is often taken from the patient prior to surgery to be able to define the stage of the disease in advance and to allow planning of the therapy options. Such intracranial biopsies were performed previously with a very complicated procedure involving a stereotactic frame. This procedure is very unpleasant for the patient and takes a long time to perform. With the new Richard Wolf FRAMELESS biopsy system, such intracranial biopsies are possible in conjunction with any neurosurgical navigation system without the use of a stereotactic frame. The surgeon has various biopsy forceps and suction biopsy needles available to take the biopsy. A special catheter guide allows the subsequent insertion of a catheter for drainage or application of medication. The new FRAMELESS instrument set will be available throughout Germany as of September 2009. Nadina Krauss / Dirk Göthel TECAM-3-USB / Why laborious when simple works as well? Industrial customers require compact solutions and demand high quality – at the same time, they also want the results available on a PC or on the Internet immediately. The Richard Wolf technoscope business area has put the market demands into practice and in May presented the technical endo-camera TECAM-3 at CONTROL in Stuttgart, the largest quality trade fair in Europe. At first sight, the innovative camera looks little different from a traditional camera head. But the new camera no longer needs a separate controller: there is space in the head for the entire camera electronics and an additional USB converter. There are three buttons on the head with which the essential functions brightness, remote and white balance can be controlled. The trick: The TECAM-3 operates without an additional power supply directly from the USB port of almost any PC which then serves as an inexpensive monitor and storage unit. The simple display software with expanded camera function that proved itself with the compact VIPAQ videoscope (manual brightness, mirroring, gamma correction etc.) is also compatible with the TECAM-3. If classic methods are preferred – the TECAM-3 also supplies S-video pictures for display on any traditional monitor - and even in the opinion of our video developer, they are every bit as good as with a 5512. And the best to finish: Doing without a separate controller with its own housing makes the TECAM-3 significantly cheaper. Three customer benefits in one - compactness, direct USB mode and cost savings. It makes no surprise that even with the serious crisis in the automobile and engineering industries the first product batch of the TECAM-3 had already been snapped up even before it had gone to final assembly. Dr. W. Ohnesorge "The Cyclops" the extremely stable and compatible optical grasping forceps for pneumology Pneumology (examination of the lung) and oesophagoscopy (endoscopy of the oesophagus) make high demands on both physicians and the instrument set, especially when tissue, foreign bodies and secretions need to be extracted or stents placed in position. For such situations, Richard Wolf has now introduced the optical grasping forceps 3XL "The Cyclops" onto the market. With the stable, rigid forceps, surgeons can grasp, manipulate and extract objects in the bronchi or oesophagus under optical control. The many years of experience of Dr. Günther Reichle of the Lung Hospital Hemer contributed significantly to the development. Because the forceps is extremely stable, it has advantages over flexible and thinner instruments. The centrally located 5.5 mm telescope allows a extremely good and precise view and provides convincing mechanical stability. This is supported by the "wrap technology" with an internal telescope patented by Richard Wolf. And last but not least, "the Cyclops" is also highly compatible, both with established telescopes as well as all bronchoscope, tracheoscope and oesophagoscope tubes with a minimum diameter of 10.6 mm and a total length under 435 mm.
