INTRODUCTION
Unlike most of Bankura District which is composed of red laterite soil, Joypur Block lies
in an alluvial zone. In this region the soil is deep, texturally medium fine, mostly acidic in soil
reaction and moderately well drained. Major part of the region harvests more than one crop
utilizing canal irrigation as well as ground water. Important river is Amodor (not Damodor). The
origin of this river is from a fountain at Kuchiakole. This has a great impact on agriculture and
thus on local economy. A good portion of Joypur is covered by dense forest.
Joypur Development Block consists of rural areas with 9(nine) Gram Panchayats viz. Gelia,
Salda, Shyamnagar, Hetia, Routhkhanda, Moynapur, Kuchiakole, Jagannathpur and Uttarbar.
Joypur Police Station serves their block. Headquarter of this block is in Joypur. Block is under
256-Kotulpur (SC) Assembly Constituency. A part of this Assembly Constituency falls under
Kotulpur Block. There is a total 81 nos. of polling stations of this A.C. under Joypur Block. But
after rationalisation no. of polling stations will be 149 under Joypur Block.
