Many Voices,
UF encourages students to move beyond what is
familiar and connect with the world. This is done by
bringing the world to UF and by sending our students
out into the world. UF believes it is essential to create
and sustain a campus that is sensitive to inclusion and
respectful of diversity. We are privileged that students
from every possible background, from throughout the
state, nation and world, choose to call the University of
Florida home. Our Office of Admissions actively seeks
academically talented students of diverse backgrounds.

Multicultural & Diversity
Affairs promotes an inclusive
campus community by creating
environments in which students
learn about themselves and diverse
others, engage in meaningful
intercultural dialogue, and enhance
their leadership and commitment
to social justice. Programs
like Café Cultural, exhale, and
FRIENDS are designed to teach
us about ourselves as well as those
that we come into contact with in
an environment where it’s SAFE
to ask questions and be REAL.

The UF Admissions Office
sponsors two Outstanding High

summer to invite academically
talented students to visit and
learn more about the university.

Office will notify you with a decision
on February 10, 2012. Applicants
who apply after November 1 will be
considered for admission on a spaceavailable basis only and may expect
decisions by April 1, 2012.
How to Apply by November 1, 2011:
• Apply online at
www.admissions.ufl.edu.
• Submit the $30 application fee.
• Ask your high school to send your
transcripts to UF.
• Arrange to have official ACT
and/or SAT scores sent directly to
UF from the testing service.
• Your ACT scores must include the Writing portion.
14
2011-12 General Information
We know how important this application
Gators are
process is to you, so we review your
application thoroughly and completely.
Admission to the University of Florida
is highly selective because the number
of qualified applicants far exceeds
the number of spaces available in the
freshman class. Your application will
be reviewed in relation to the size and
strength of the entire applicant pool.
The Admissions Review Committee
comprehensively reviews academic and
non-academic credentials, which includes the
following: your high school record (grades, strength
of curriculum, progression over time, senior-year
schedule, educational objectives, and your SAT or
ACT scores), your submitted essay, extracurricular
activities, personal background and experiences.
All of these factors have contributed to your
individuality and serve as important information in
your admissions application.
15
Freshman Admission
Tentative Admission
All offers of admission are tentative. The Office of
Admissions determines final admission after it receives
your final high school and/or college transcripts.
Freshman Tuition Deposit
After you are admitted to UF, you must confirm your
intention to enroll and submit a $200 tuition deposit no
later than May 1, 2012. This deposit will be credited to
your account and applied directly to your tuition and
fees. Students with financial need may qualify to make
arrangements with the Office of Admissions to waive this
tuition deposit.
Preview
The University of Florida wants you to have a smooth
transition as you join our college community. Preview,
our orientation program, is designed to acquaint
students and their families with university resources,
policies and facilities. All admitted students must attend
Preview and will receive their invitation in March 2012.
Refer to www.dso.ufl.edu/nsp/.
Transfer Admission
If you will not attend the University of Florida as a
freshman, consider attending as a junior-level transfer.
Junior-level entry can be an excellent way to continue
the pursuit of your bachelor’s degree. Refer to
www.admissions.ufl.edu/ugrad/applytransfer.html.
Freshman- or Sophomore-Level Transfer
A freshman or sophomore transfer applicant has graduated
from high school and has 13-59 transferable semester
college hours. Due to space limitations, UF currently is not
accepting lower-division transfer students. Prospective
transfer applicants are encouraged to remain at or to
transfer to a Florida community college until the AA degree
is completed.
Junior- or Senior-Level Transfer
A junior- or senior-level transfer applicant has 60 or
more transferable semester hours and/or the Associate of
Arts degree from a regionally accredited institution. The
applicant’s college and major make the final admission
decision. Applicants should contact the college that offers
their major to ensure they meet all of the requirements
and to learn of the application deadlines. Refer to
www.admissions.ufl.edu/ugrad/trappdates.html
International Admission
International students offer a cultural perspective that enriches
the entire campus community as they join our diverse student
body of high achievers. UF welcomes applications from
international students, and we currently host 4,700 students
who are seeking a UF education that will be recognized all
over the world. All freshman and transfer applicants to UF

complete the same application. All official documents including
transcripts, examination certificates and diplomas in the
native language should be mailed to the Office of Admissions.
An official certified English translation must be attached to
documents not issued in English. Refer to the information in
this publication on criteria for freshman and transfer admission.
Additional information is available at www.admissions.ufl.
edu/intl/admissioninfo.html.
The International Student Services Office (ISS) in UF’s
International Center is committed to ensuring the integration of
international students and families into the life of the campus and
community. ISS assists students with the visa process and
immigration-related issues. Students are required to complete and
submit the Certificate of Financial Responsibility upon request from
the UF International Center to document proof of financial support.
Refer to www.ufic.ufl.edu/iss.htm.
Financial Assistance
Many students at UF receive some form of financial assistance.
To determine your eligibility for federally funded aid, you must
complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA),
available at most high school and college guidance offices, and
online. To receive aid at UF, apply for financial aid as soon as
possible after January 1 by completing the FAFSA. Do not wait
to be admitted to UF to apply. The earlier you apply, the better
chance you will have of being considered for all aid programs,
including the Florida Opportunity Scholarship Program. A
student’s FAFSA information is evaluated to determine eligibility
for this and other university based aid. Students interested in
state financial aid programs such as Florida Student Assistance
Grants and Florida Bright Futures Scholarships should contact
their high school guidance office or the Florida Department of
Education in Tallahassee (888-827-2004) in the fall or early spring
for information and forms.
Students who are not citizens of the United States should
visit UF’s International Center site at www.ufic.ufl.edu/
issresources/financialaid.htm for information about the
availability of financial assistance.
Scholarships
The university awards National Merit and National
Achievement scholarships to students who are named finalists
by the National Merit Corporation and designate UF as their
first-choice school for enrollment. Other scholarships also
exist for Florida and non-Florida residents. Scholarships
are administered by the Office of Student Financial Affairs,
the Office of Admissions, UF colleges and departments, the
UF Foundation and private organizations. Numerous grant
programs are available, including Federal Pell Grants, Federal
Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants, Florida Student
Assistance Grants and Turner Grants. These grants vary in
eligibility requirements, value and duration. They do not have
to be repaid. www.sfa.ufl.edu
www.fafsa.ed.gov
Campus Resources
Housing
UF houses 7,500 students in a variety of building and room types
in 27 residence halls located on campus. An average of 75 percent
of freshmen live on campus. Housing is assigned on a first-come,
first-served basis determined by a student’s housing application
date. Incoming students are encouraged to apply for housing soon
after receiving correspondence from UF Housing and Residence
Education, which is sent approximately one week after the UF
application is completed. Students can choose from apartment,
suite, and traditional-style communities. More information on
room styles, floor plans, dimensions, housing rates and photos are
available online. While living on campus, students will meet and
interact with their peers, live as a part of a community, get involved
in building and campus activities, and feel more connected to the
UF community all while living on campus close to their classes.
Students who live in campus housing are, on average, more likely
to get higher grades, be involved in leadership positions, and
graduate in four years. Learn more at www.housing.ufl.edu.
Dining
The Gator Dining Service is the official food service provider for
the University of Florida. There are more than 40 dining options
on campus, including two residential dining facilities and several
national franchises. Gator Dining offers two types of dining
programs: 1) Meal Plans or 2) The Declining Balance Account.
Refer to www.bsd.ufl.edu/dining.
Safety
With the lives and well-being of more than 50,000 students
at stake, we take the responsibility of safety very seriously. The
UF Police Department is a state and nationally accredited law
enforcement agency with more than 80 law enforcement officers
who provide 24-hour daily patrol and protection of campus.
UF has developed extensive response plans to many different
types of safety concerns and has a successful collaboration
with law enforcement agencies throughout the state, Alachua
County and the city of Gainesville. Our safety communication
plan combines mass simultaneous e-mail notification, UF home
page postings, text messaging and media alerts to disseminate
emergency information quickly and comprehensively. UFPD is
the second largest accredited university police department in
the United States. www.police.ufl.edu
