13th Annual Tommy Alverson Family Gathering at the edge of Joe Pool Lake.

Halloween Street & Treat

Taco Bell To Open on Main
A new Taco Bell is under construction on the
north side of Main Street in downtown Grand
Prairie just west of the Belt Line Road bridge. The
2,855-square-foot restaurant is estimated to open in
fall 2010.

The railroad crossing at West 14th
Street between Main and Jefferson
is permanently closed due to State
Highway 161 construction. A detour
is marked for south bound (north of
Main) traffic to use NW 19th Street to
cross the railroad tracks. North bound
traffic (south of Jefferson) is instructed
to use Carrier, SW 19th or SW 23rd to
cross the tracks until the new at-grade
crossings at the SH 161 frontage roads
open in May 2012.
Fall Indie Fest

Fall Indie Fest is a celebration
of independent film and music coming to downtown Grand Prairie. The
event will serve as a competition to
both recognize and reward independent filmmakers and musicians from
throughout Texas. The three day
festival will include screenings of fulllength and short films and concerts
by artists from all genres. Screenings
and concerts will begin Friday, Oct. 8.
The festival will culminate on Oct. 10
with a reception and announcement of
winners at the city’s historic Uptown

The city of Grand Prairie’s Fall 2010 edition of its quarterly magazine, Life
is Grand, is now available online and at various city facilities around town. Life
is Grand contains the parks and recreation class guide and special events, as

you a star in GobFest 2010, Gobs of Talent Variety Show!
We're looking for unique talent—Singers, Musicians, Dancers, Magic Acts, Juggling, Comedy Acts, Acrobats … anything
goes! Solo acts up to groups of 10. Participants must be at
least five years old. Performers from both inside and outside of

Church Marks
140 Years
The entire community is invited to
join the members of West Fork Presbyterian Church in celebrating its 140th
anniversary on Sunday, Oct. 17, from

Presbyterian is the oldest church in
Grand Prairie.
There will be a program and singing of traditional hymns and celebratory music. Historical documents,

The historic Uptown Theater in downtown Grand Prairie, 120 E. Main St.,
has lined up an outstanding array of shows for its 2010-2011 Art Series. Season

A Cinderella Story
Our story begins on July 26 when a concerned
Grand Prairie resident made an emergency call to
Grand Prairie Animal Services for a stray sick animal.
Rookie Animal Services Officer Charles Munoz went
out to collect the dog that would later be named “Miss
Baxter.”
Miss Baxter was brought to the shelter and vaccinated for kennel cough, distemper and parvo and
placed in a kennel with food and water. The next day,
while visiting the shelter to look for a dog to adopt,
Grand Prairie resident Tammy Thoman discovered
Miss Baxter and was so moved by her desperate appearance that she offered to pay for the cost of grooming and any veterinary care that
Miss Baxter might need. Miss Baxter was adopted three days later by Kim K.
another loving Grand Prairie resident.
We’d like to offer our sincere thanks to Dr. Mark Sheets’s office, All Breeds’
Groomers, the City of Grand Prairie Animal Services Staff and most of all, to
the caring and generous citizens of Grand Prairie and particularly to Ms. Thoman who has so richly blessed Miss Baxter.
Prairie Paws receives, vaccinates and houses more than 5,000 animals per
year and currently has a staff of nine people. Volunteers and fosters are always
welcome and appreciated! They also gratefully accept donations that provide
for medical care for foster animals, spaying and neutering for Petco adoptions
and grooming for special needs animals such as Miss Baxter.
