First let me reiterate
what our auction chair, Patti
Burger said to all. Thank
you, thank you, and thank
you. The auction was a great
success thanks to all those
that attended (over 100 by the
way). We reached our goal
of raising $5000. I think it is
important for all Navy League
members to know that we
have less than a 1% overhead
to run this great organization.
So almost all of the money
raised will go to support our
core mission of supporting
our sea services. As I have stated before, we do this by
funding no dough dinners, flags for ship returns, college
scholarships for outstanding sea cadets and NJROTC,
swords for top naval student at JU, Recognizing top
sailors of the quarter and year and many other activities.
Of course none of this is free. That’s why our fund raising
activities are so important. So I say thank you again for
all of your generous support.
This brings me to another topic, our local Mayport
dues and national dues are separate. The local dues are
collected at a different time than the national. National
is usually collected on the anniversary of your joining
the organization and local is usually collected in the first
couple of months of the new year. Last year only 50%
paid their local dues. This put us in a difficult position
funding many of the items we were trying to do this year.
Please, when you get your local dues notice this next year,
please take the time to send in this money.
If you would like to get more involved, there are

a number of areas we are in desperate need.
We need someone to handle newsletter
duties (this will become much easier once
we transition to an electronic newsletter).
We also need help with the Sailor of the
Year committee, fund raising committee and
membership committee. If you have talents
in these areas or are interested in getting
more involved, please let me know. I would
love to get you plugged into the area you are
interested in.
I hope many of you will join us
for this month’s dinner. We will have a
Thanksgiving buffet at Surfside. Our speaker
is the CAPT Tillotson, the Commodore of
Destroyer Squadron 14 here in Mayport. It
should be a great event and I look forward to
seeing many of you there.
Finally, last month I indicated we
are going to an electronic newsletter soon.
I asked for email updates from everyone. I
have only received a few. So I am imploring
everyone, that if I do not have your email
(you will know this if you do not receive
regular email updates from me) to get me
your email so that you will continue to get
the newsletter. My email address is rick@

Our Annual Auction was a
tremendous success! Over 100 people
attended the evening at TPC Sawgrass and
enthusiastically bid on every auction item,
purchased raffle tickets, enjoyed delicious
food and the sounds of the Gary Starling Jazz
Band. Our first live auction was exciting and
the bidding was very competitive. We’re still
compiling the final numbers but we exceeded
our goals in every area.
A very special thank you to your
Auction Committee: Dottie and Jack Cernik,
Barbara and Bob Price and Jim Young. Thank
you, also, to John Vargo who served as our
wonderful (and humorous) auctioneer and to
Helen Weller for helping us with check-in,
selling raffle tickets and being wherever we
needed her to be the night of the auction.
We wouldn’t have been as successful
without the support of several Navy Leaguers
who helped to secure or donated auction
items: Jack and Dottie Cernik, Rick Costner,
Culhane’s Irish Pub, George Huchting,
Rosanne Jameson, Brian Kennedy, Bill
McLoughlin, Don Mooers Dennis Stokowski
and John Vargo. Thank you to all the
vendors who donated products or services.
Our outstanding Mayport Sea Cadets
provided the Color Guard and helped us to
recognize the winning bidders.
And most importantly, thank you
Mayport Navy League for being so extremely
generous. You have made it possible for our
Council to continue to support the men and
women of the Sea Services.

Salvation Army Bell Ringing “Ring the Bells for Mike”
Many of you will recall that VADM Mike Kalleres was an ardent supporter of the Salvation Army and got our
organizations involved with the bell ringing each Holiday Season at the Publix market, corner of Atlantic and
Hodges.
To carry on the tradition, The Mayport Navy league and the Naval Order will combine forces this year to
man both the east and the west Publix entrances.
We will ring the bells from 9:00 am till 6:00 pm on Saturday, December 6, 2014. If we get enough folks to
sign up, we hope to be able to have one hour shifts at each entrance. We need two people for each shift at
each station.
Contact Mike Manko 904-221-3186 or at [email protected] to reserve your time slot. You need to arrive
5 minutes prior to your sign up time. A watch list and instructions will be posted at each station.

In 2007, the Worcester family, along with veterans, and others who had helped with their annual Christmas
wreath ceremony in Arlington, formed Wreaths Across America™, to continue and expand this effort, and
support other groups around the country who wanted to do the same. This nonprofit organization continues the
Arlington tradition as part of its mission to Remember, Honor and teach.
In 2013, Wreaths Across America and our national network of volunteers laid over 420,000 memorial wreaths
at over 900 locations in the United States and beyond. We accomplished this with help from 1382 fundraising
groups, many corporate contributions, and donations of trucking, shipping, and thousands of helping hands.
Our annual pilgrimage from Harrington, Maine to Arlington National Cemetery is known as the world’s largest
veteran’s parade, stopping at schools, monuments, veteran’s homes and communities all along the way to
remind people how important it is to remember, honor and teach.
Proceeds place a wreath at one of the participating cemeteries; help support our fundraising partners,
educational and veteran’s services outreach. Please note that all sponsorships are sent directly to the location
and no wreaths are sent to the individuals purchasing sponsorships.
We welcome all to join us at any Wreaths Across America ceremony. If you would like to participate or help
bring sponsored wreaths to your local community, please contact us and we will help connect you with other
groups already working in your area.

Orlando all met Saturday morning, went to the NAS Galley
for lunch and then dispersed to attend the record crowd at the
2014 Air Show. Our biggest Challenge of the day was getting
170 cadets on cue for our group picture!
Our Mayport Sea Cadet Unit continues to grow. We are
now slightly over 50 cadets, we had 42 in attendance at the air show event.
The Mayport Sea Cadets will once again be selling wreaths as a fundraiser
for the Wreaths Across America event. The local event will be held on December 13th 2014 at the Jax National Cemetery. The wreaths cost $15 of which $5
goes back to support our Mayport Sea Cadet Unit. If you are interested in buying
a wreath and supporting our Mayport Sea Cadets, please look for a follow up
email or check our Mayport Navy League Website.

Corporate and Community Affiliate Membership - What’s is all about!
The Corporate Membership program is structured to help industry maintain a strategic position in front of key military, civilian defense, and
homeland security decision makers. From
Washington, DC programs to local events with
our Councils nationwide, the Navy League can
help enhance your company's brand and patriotic
reputation among industry and military leaders
alike.
Community Affiliate Memberships
demonstrates a company's commitment to the local
council and a desire to support and advance the
objective and purpose of the Navy League. This
membership is designed for companies whose
business is primarily local rather than national in
scope. Community Affiliate membership
demonstrates your desire to support young people
through our special youth
programs and scholarships.
Council activities range from special military installation visits and ship tours or cruises to a wide
variety of social events as luncheons or dinners during which members of the Sea Services are honored
or presented with awards. Council members work together to foster common local interest and to
promote maritime issues of national importance.
And along the way, we have a great time!
