The Hardy family’s journey began in 1987 with the purchase of
the Nemacolin Resort property. It began with a vision: to create a
world-class resort unlike any other; to create a getaway designed
for couples, family and corporate gatherings – a “something for
everyone” destination.
Many years later, we’re proud to offer several lodging options ranging
from the luxurious Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five-Diamond Falling
Rock to the comfort of the Maggie Valley RV Park. We’re equally

HISTORY
In 1740, a trail was carved through the rugged Laurel Highlands
between what is now Cumberland, Maryland and Brownsville,
Pennsylvania. The trailblazer was a native Lenae Lenape Indian Chief
named Nemacolin. Assisted by frontiersman, Thomas Cresap, Chief
Nemacolin plotted what is still considered to be the most direct
route from East to West.
Nemacolin’s trail was later widened and used by Colonel George
Washington and General Edward Braddock during the French and
Indian War. Fort Necessity was constructed near the trail and
remains a nationally renowned point of interest today.
In the mid-1800s, Congress established the first National “Highway”
utilizing Nemacolin’s trail and extended it westward. Until the
railroads became prevalent some fifty years later, this highway was
the major means of East to West transportation. Today, this highway
is known as U.S. Route 40.
During the 19th century, the Laurel Highlands became a popular
and fashionable retreat for wealthy Pittsburgh industrialists and
merchants. Attracted to the natural beauty of the mountains, they
built vacation homes throughout the area. The Kaufmann family,
founders of the Pittsburgh department store, built the area’s most
popular home, Fallingwater, in the 1930s. Fallingwater, Frank Lloyd
Wright’s masterpiece, remains an outstanding example of Wright’s
genius and talent.
In 1968, Rockwell International decided to construct a
Tudor-style lodge along Route 40 to accommodate their vacationing
business associates and friends. Architect C. W. Balling of nearby
Fairchance, Pennsylvania, designed the building for Willard Rockwell,
his former college roommate. The original structure, with ten guest
rooms, quickly proved to be insufficient. Twenty-three additional
rooms were added and decorated by Mrs. Rockwell. The property,
then known as Nemacolin Trails Hunting Reserve, was stocked with
a variety of game birds and various breeds of imported and native
deer. Weekend hunting retreats were arranged for Mr. Rockwell’s
business colleagues. A trap shooting area and quail walk completed
the hunting reserve.

Since guests came to hunt primarily in the spring and fall, a golf
course and tennis courts were added for summer recreation. Lake
Louise and Lake Carol were built at the same time in honor of Mr.
Rockwell’s daughter and daughter-in-law. For convenience, an airstrip
was added. Off-property, Beaver Creek was being developed into
the excellent trout stream it remains today.
Mr. Rockwell sold the property in 1979 to Cordelia Mellon Scaife.
Ms. Scaife operated the Inn as a private conference center for two
years, then closed it in 1981. In 1982, Ms. Scaife sold the Inn to Kent
Rockwell, Willard Rockwell’s son.
Kent opened the Inn to the public as a conference center. He added
an outdoor swimming pool, the first restaurant, called Golden Trout,
and the Maples condominiums. After a financial reversal, the bank
took possession of the property in 1986. The Inn remained closed
until 1987, when it was placed on the auction block. Nemacolin
was sold at auction to Joseph A. Hardy III, the founder of 84
Lumber. From the date of purchase to present day, Mr. Hardy and
his daughter Maggie have been, and continue to be, committed to
evolving the property into a world-class destination.

JEEP® OFF-ROAD DRIVING ACADEMY
What could be more electrifying than taking the wheel of a Jeep®
Rubicon? Perhaps it might be plowing that Jeep® Rubicon through a
series of muddy ponds, rocky crossings, ruts, logs, steep climbs and
tricky vertical ledges. We are here to give you that chance. With
instruction on our challenging courses, drivers will navigate terrain
designed to test any skill level.
Off-Road Driving Instructional Trips
Take the wheel and get ready for a pure adrenaline rush! The trip
starts with “The Crater” – a seven-acre, mile-long course with
challenges from start to finish. Be ready to navigate ponds, climbs,
awkward descents and testy moguls. After that, head out onto the
off-road trails with 20 miles of terrain loaded with every obstacle
imaginable. We are talking muddy ponds, logs, precarious side slopes,
rock crossings, steep inclines and vertical ledges. Think you can
handle it? We are betting you can.
Off-Road Ride Alongs
Don’t want to take the wheel? Don’t worry. With our Off-Road
Ride Alongs, you can ride the vehicle around the off-road trails with
one of our instructors.
OHIOPYLE STATE PARK
Nemacolin is your gateway to some of the best river rafting,
kayaking, hiking and biking in the Eastern United States. Situated just
a scenic 10-minute ride from the gates of Nemacolin is Ohiopyle
State Park (www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/Parks/ohiopyle.aspx). The
Park encompasses 19,052 acres of rugged, natural beauty. The focal
point of the park is 14 miles of the Youghiogheny River that passes
through the heart of the park. For rafting, hiking and biking tours at

DOG SLEDDING
For the ultimate in unique, we invite you to climb aboard one of
our dogsleds. Yes, dog sledding at Nemacolin. Our team of sled
dogs are raring to pull sledders through the resort’s scenic acres
of wooded wonder. No need for snow, either. Providing the
temperature is below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, dogs can also pull a
four-wheeled Touri cart over bare ground. Either way, it’s a ride
like none other!

LAUTREC
Housing authentic lithographs of Post-Impressionist artist, Henri
de Toulouse-Lautrec, this Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five-Diamond
restaurant features European style cuisine made from the finest
ingredients found locally and internationally. The menu is a prix-fixe
format in which guests can create their own four course menu or
dine from the nine course Chef’s Tasting menu. A la carte dining
is not available. To properly complement your experience, our
resident sommelier is available to pair flights of wine for the menu
of your choosing and a selection of artisanal cheeses, loose-leaf tea
service and mignardises are offered to heighten the experience.
Children under the age of 12 may find our cuisine and style of service a
bit grown-up for their taste; however, a young adult menu is available upon
request. Proper attire is business casual.
AQUEOUS (Seasonal)
Dine in Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired style…with a panoramic view of
the spectacular Laurel Highlands. The property’s Forbes Four-Star and
AAA Four-Diamond restaurant, Aqueous is an upscale steakhouse
experience in a contemporary setting. Resort causal attire is acceptable.
AUTUMN
Warm, relaxed, casual. Located in the Lodge, Autumn’s dinner menu
favors a relaxed pace; a chance to enjoy a leisurely repast. With a
regional cuisine featuring the finest ingredients found on local farms
and with a focus on “sustainable seafood”, Autumn is a “green”
rated destination by the Green Restaurant Association. The menu
selections are designed to create a multiple course meal, with wine
suggestions for each course. Resort casual attire is acceptable.

Located near The Links Golf Course and the Adventure Center,
the CaddyShack, a BBQ Joint, is a casual fare restaurant serving
mouthwatering sandwiches and entrees.
THE TAVERN
Nemacolin’s version of a traditional English-style pub. Dine in
the bar or sidewalk café-style near the 8,500-gallon free standing
saltwater aquarium. Open year round, the Tavern features a variety
of sandwiches, salads, fish and chips and more. When the dishes are
cleared, why not shoot a game of billiards? (The Billiard Room is
