News and Views October 2014
October 2014 FROM THE PASTOR Passing on the Vision—Walking into the Future Recently driving to work I noticed the leaves are turning from their summer green to a palette of autumn colors, a sprinkling of orange amid the dazzling yellow and red of the sugar maples, the oak contributing a touch of dark rust hue. The season is changing, quickly moving into my favorite time of year. In every aspect of life, change arrives, hopefully on an orderly basis, allowing us to accommodate ourselves to new schedules, priorities, preparation, and eventual enjoyment. With change in mind, the Stewardship Team (composed of Jill Ryder—chairperson, Chuck Peters, Melissa Randall, Andy Aalderks, Heidi Kiser, and Don Tyne) is introducing a new understanding of stewardship. Instead of using the S-word only when money is incorporated in the same sentence, we are appealing to a broader understanding of stewardship, along with a new implementation procedure. We believe our tradition, faith, and the Bible directs us to see stewardship as encompassing all of life, not just money. With that in mind we have partitioned First Presbyterian’s stewardship focus into quarterly segments, each featuring a distinct emphasis. The first quarter of each year will remind us of our responsibility to be faithful stewards of our personal assets—from keeping the yard mowed to spending less on unneeded Christmas gifts, to saving more for our retirement. The second quarter will accent the stewardship of our environment; the third quarter will focus attention on being good steward of our physical bodies: exercise, intellectual pursuits, hobbies, etc. The fourth quarter, which we are presently beginning, will bring to the fore our stewardship to our congregation, with the motif of the “Annual Appeal.” Hopefully, presenting stewardship as a dynamic affecting every aspect of the Christian life, will make us keenly aware that stewardship is not something we do to get something, but because we have already received far more than we either need or can share. With this in mind, this year’s Annual Appeal has adopted the theme, “Passing on the Vision—Walking Into the Future.” Within the next few weeks you will receive a letter detailing the dates of our campaign. Briefly, our Annual Appeal Sunday—the date assigned to turn in your pledge cards, will be Sunday, October 26th. Information concerning when you will receive your pledge cards, including answers to many of the questions you might have, will be in the aforementioned letter. “Passing on the Vision—Walking Into the Future,” is not simply another nice slogan—it is a reality at First Presbyterian. The Pastor Nominating Committee is meeting each week, preparing to gather information concerning the present status of our congregation’s ministries, including congregants vision for the future; and what they believe is the potential of First Presbyterian as a beacon for Jesus Christ in the downtown area and beyond. Potential pastors, applying for the position of Head of Staff, are attracted to a congregation that is moving forward, instead of simply waiting until a new pastor arrives. I am confident that more than the color of the leaves are changing—we are changing, preparing for a new day in the life of our congregation. I have great faith that we will meet the challenge before us. ~The Stewardship Team Special Sunday Schedule - October 5 World Communion Sunday October 5, 2014 One Worship Service 11:00am On October 5th, the Especially For You Race Against Breast Cancer will be run through the downtown area and finish in Greene Square Park. Because the roads around the church will be blockaded for runners/walkers we will not be holding the 9:00AM worship service nor Sunday School and Forum that morning. However, the roads and our lot will be open at 10:00AM, so we can all worship together at 11:00AM. There are also several opportunities for you to be involved in the morning. Run or walk in the race. Each year we have numerous First Pres members who run or walk in support of mothers and grandmothers, daughters, sisters, aunts and friends. This year you can make a morning of it, enjoying the walk and finishing up at FPC for worship with your church family. Burritos for mission Because of the disruption of our morning schedule, the Especially For You folk have reserved the space out in front of our church and are erecting a tent and tables for us to set up a breakfast burrito stand. We'll be selling burritos with all proceeds going to support the many local and international missions we help. If you would like to help with burrito prep that morning or with the creation of several displays for our "shop" highlighting our missions, please contact Pastor Heather. Communion and Blessing Also that morning as a ministry to all those who are walking, we will be offering communion and a blessing to all those walkers who would like to partake on the steps of our church. We will need a few elders to serve at our outdoor stations from 8-10am and a whole host of elders to help serve at our 11:00 worship. If you are an elder and would like to serve on that morning, please contact Laura Behrens. Hope you can join us for this exciting morning as a church "in the heart of the city" Page 4 Session Notes from the Stated Session Meeting First Presbyterian Church Cedar Rapids, Iowa 7:00PM Board Room - Sept. 16, 2014 Opening devotions by Andy Aalderks. October 2014 Page 5 October 2014 Wednesday, Oct 8th: Mission Supper The Mission Committee is sponsoring a soup supper on Wednesday, October 8th to provide an update on the work of the Presbyterian schools in Pakistan. The supper will be served at 5:30 in the Gathering Space and will conclude in time for members to attend the Faith and Life film discussion class or choir rehearsal. Please let the church office know by Monday, October 6th if you plan to attend. DO YOU LIKE TO COOK? Could you give 1-2 hours of time on a Sunday afternoon for our SEMP program? We are looking for people who can assist the cook with food preparation. Minor kitchen skills are all that is needed. Please contact Karen Monroe ([email protected] or 319-362-4415) if you are interested in helping. Margy Trimble, from Friends of the Presbyterian Education Board-Pakistan (PEB), will speak. Margy lived in Pakistan for five years and served there on the Executive Committee of the Presbyterian Education Board. A free will offering will be received. Contributions in excess of the meal cost will go to Pasrur school sponsorships. Our congregation has funded several sponsorships for girls attending the Pasrur School and Christian Girls Boarding House in Pakistan. The sponsorships cover the full cost of tuition, room Friday, October 3 11:45AM - 1:00PM and board, books and uniform and make it possible First Presbyterian Church 310 Fifth Street SE, Cedar Rapids for girls from impoverished, rural families to receive an excellent education. An annual CHALLENGES IN HIGHER EDUCATION sponsorship for a girl up through grade 10 costs Sally Mason, President $450, and for a student in 11th or 12th grade costs The University of Iowa $750. Education for girls is one of the most costJoin President Sally Mason of the University of Iowa in effective investments for development. Founding and funding schools was a focus of early Presbyterian missionaries in Pakistan, work that is still needed. Pakistan has the world’s second highest number of children out of school, with children as young as 5 working long days as brick makers. Women’s illiteracy rate is high and the Taliban are fiercely opposed to educating girls. In 2012 when the Taliban attacked 15-year-old Malala Yousafzai for attending school, it drew worldwide attention. After recovering from a severe head wound, Malala addressed the UN on the goal of universal education. She concluded, “…let us pick up our books and pens. They are our most powerful weapons. One child, one teacher, one pen and one book can change the world. Education is the only solution. Education First.” Page 6 a conversation on the challenges facing higher education, its students now and in the near future, and solutions to those challenges. $10 per person (payable at the door). Make your reservations for Intersections by Tuesday, September 30. Email [email protected] or call 319.364.6148. If you make a reservation and are unable to attend, payment for your reservation is appreciated if you do not cancel by the Tuesday deadline. Who else should be attending Intersections? We want Intersections to reach more people in the greater Cedar Rapids area. And, we need your help! Please consider inviting a couple of friends (or more!) to attend Intersections with you. Make sure you give us their names when you make your reservation. Thank you for your help! Intersections is a monthly gathering of the Interfaith Alliance of Iowa in Cedar Rapids. An opportunity to learn, to participate in civil dialogue, and to discuss issues at the intersection of religion and politics. October 2014 CROP Hunger Walk Please help us feed the hungry by walking or sponsoring our walkers in the 42nd annual 5K CROP Hunger Walk on Sunday, October 12th, starting from Thomas Park in Marion. Registration begins at 1:00 and the walk starts at 1:30. Twenty-five percent of the funds raised are divided among the Linn Community Food Bank, Green Square Meals and Churches of Marion Pantry. The rest of the funds support the work of Church World Service (CWS) in international poverty-focused development and refugee resettlement. CWS helps communities achieve sustainable solutions to drought and famine. CWS teaches water harvesting techniques like sand dams, rock water troughs, roof catchments and runoff harvesting. They help villagers acquire seeds for drought tolerant crops and provide training in efficient irrigation methods. All of these make communities less vulnerable to seasonal droughts. Both our Sunday Evening Meals Program and the Linn Community Food Bank are serving increasing numbers of guests. Last year the Food Bank served 30 percent more households than it had the year before, while obtaining considerably less food from the HACAP food reservoir. This year the food bank ceased providing cash vouchers for milk and produce. And last year Congress cut funding for the federal SNAP (food stamp) program, while wages continue to stagnate. We have many hungry neighbors. Our CROP Hunger Walk funds are sorely needed. Senior Luncheon Don’t miss the next Senior Luncheon, Sunday, October 26, at 12:10PM. You don’t have to be a senior to come! Dave Davidson, our chef, will be making another delicious meal. You won’t go away hungry! Please sign up in the gathering space after services or call the church office to make your reservations. ~The Deacons Page 7 All Church Fall Festival 19 Gehring’s Barn 10600 Hawks Haven Rd From Cedar Rapids I-380 go 4.3 mi Take exit #25 -
