Thank you CCW for helping others!
CCW’s Adopt-A-Family program assisted
21 St. Petronille Christian
Service families in addition
to numerous other families
in the community by
providing Christmas gifts to
families who otherwise
might not have them. On the first Friday night in
December, parishioners who have adopted a family
drop off their gifts at St. Petronille. The program is
very extensive and starts months in advance. By
the end of the weekend, my office isn’t
recognizable because of all the generously donated
gifts!
Recipients start coming to pick up their
gifts on the following Monday and a small additional area is
set up for people to choose from items that have also been
donated to Christian Service throughout the year. Kathy
Driscoll is instrumental in helping to arrange the items and
assisting people through the process of shopping and
picking up their Adopt-A-Family gift. Thank you to all who
were a part of the program, CCW, and Kathy Driscoll!

Our first Coat Drive
The coat drive went well! Valerie DellaPenna and
Mary Miller had their youth
groups decorate the boxes to
collect the donated coats. On
Sunday, December 6, Christine
Balaty and I collected the coats
and organized them according to
size for our parishioners in need.
Our parishioners who were in need
of a coat took over half the donated coats and there were
lots of smiles of appreciation! Valerie and Mary will take
the rest of the coats to St. Vincent de Paul. Thank you to all
the parishioners who donated a coat to this event and helped
others in need!
Atria Assisted Living spreading holiday cheer!
Advent is a time of reflection and preparation.
Sometimes it is hard not to get caught up in the busyness of
the additional things that
need to be done during
the season. On Dec. 9,
Atria Assisted Living
helped remind us to slow
down and enjoy the
season. Director Mary
Shafer brought several of
their residents on a bus to sing Christmas carols, hand out
candy canes, eat some coffee cake, and enjoy a small
Christmas tree! A handful of us were able to go on the bus
and enjoy the carols and holiday cheer! Thank you for the
wonderful surprise and gracious gifts!

Making plans for Spring Break Yet?
Make them with St. Pet’s Youth Ministry for the Spring

cook our own meals and enjoy the Two Medicine River,
hike the Buffalo Jumps (weather permitting), and spend
time in the quiet. Applications available in Youth

Students in Grades 6 through 8 celebrated the
Feast of our Lady of Guadalupe in a special
way. During one of their Spanish classes
leading up to December 12, students had the
opportunity to join in a fiesta in Our Lady’s
honor. Students brought in and shared such
delicious treats as pastelitos de guayaba,
churros, and chips and dips of many kinds such
as quesos, salsas and guacamoles. Fiestas are a
wonderful way to help students take a glimpse
into the culture
of our brothers
and sisters of
other lands; and
the
activities
surrounding the
Feast of Our
Lady of Guadalupe proved
to be a wonderful way to
lift up the name of the
Patroness of the Americas,
Patroness of the Unborn,
and the Patroness of the
World Language Department of St. Petronille School.

Youth Ministry
St. Petronille Parish
Transforming Adolescent Catechesis
Our Brainstorming Workshop on Nov. 5,
focused on enhancing our approach to ministry
with youth, was a BIG success! We had a
diverse age group of about 30 men and women
there who were highly engaged and ready to work. Our
session was 2 hours, but we could have easily gone longer
with the creative energy that was in the room!
We truly appreciated everyone who came out that
evening to support our efforts with their enthusiasm, input
and ideas. Since that night, we've received a number of emails
and calls from people who were unable to attend, but
expressed interest in helping as well. We will be getting a
hold of you soon.
Our next step is to use your ideas to develop practical
goals and action plans that address our gaps and support the
things that are going well. A group of teens and adults
attended the National Catholic Youth Conference in
Indianapolis and returned with great ideas, inspiration and
resources that we will also use in that process. We will be
looking to YOU and other interested people for help as ideas
begin to take shape.
Thank you all for investing in our youth!
If you're interested in future involvement, please
email: [email protected].

Christian Service is affected by the
Lack of an Illinois State Budget
A couple of weeks ago, a woman with two
children came into my office in need of rental assistance
because she fractured her ankle. Despite a doctor’s note,
which said she could not work for a couple of months,
she learned that there was no aid available to her on the
state level. She was very overwhelmed and did not know
where to turn for help.
Usually, when someone comes in for assistance, I
try to collaborate with federal and state agencies as well
as other private agencies in order to help offset the entire
cost of the person’s request. The issues with the economy
have led to the stoppage of the majority of social service
programs and the discontinuation of some others. Private
agencies are seeing the rippling effects and are struggling
to assist those in need, especially senior citizens, children,
and the disabled.
St. Petronille parishioners have always graciously
assisted others by donating to The Share Fund. Due to
your kindness, we were able to help this woman and her
children despite the economy. With the coming of the
New Year, it is my hope the state passes the budget.
I am humbled at the support and love our parish gives to
the endless needs of others. You are the faces of Jesus!
Thank you for all that you do and may the kindness you
give to others come back to you!
