Mashpee Yesterday & Today
The town of Mashpee was originally an Indian village. Many areas were settled as towns
throughout Massachusetts beginning in the 17th century, but it was different in Mashpee. It was
an area set aside by the Plymouth Colony as a home for the Indians displaced by the new towns
being built on their ancestral lands. Mashpee was at first designated a Plantation but finally was
incorporated as a Town in 1870. For more information, call the Archives Building, 508-539-1438

Now the Town of Mashpee is administrated on a daily basis by an elected Board of Selectmen
and a Town Administrator, whose duties and fiscal responsibilities are determined by the old
fashioned New England town meeting form of government. The last decade has seen a
tremendous growth and Mashpee has become one of the fastest growing areas in the state. The
population is over 15,000 year-round and increases to over 35,000 during the summer. Along
with attracting vacationers, Mashpee is a great place to call home.
Mashpee’s Native American Culture
Indian Meeting House - Built in 1684 on Santuit Pond, the Meeting House was moved to its
present site on Route 28, and is the oldest church building on Cape Cod. The Mashpee tribe still
uses this site for worship, meetings and social activities. Memorials and religious services are
held at the Meeting House in the summer, some with Indian services indigenous to its history. By
appointment only, call 508-477-0208.
Annual Indian Powwow - At one time, mainly chiefs participated in the Pow Wow to discuss
problems and perform religious ceremonies; in the early 1800’s, this purpose was expanded. The
Pow Wow now involves tribes invited from all over the nation, as well as the local Wampanoag tribe,
who gather together to celebrate their heritage in full regalia. The celebration, which takes place the
Fourth of July weekend, includes dances, handicrafts, demonstrations, craft booths and
refreshments. There is a group supper on Saturday night and a Cape Cod clambake on Sunday. For

Late 1700’s Cemetery/Old Indian Burial Ground - A tiny plot by the side of the road, this
cemetery offers a fine example of headstones of the period. Many are inscribed with philosophical
or witty sayings, and are carved with scenes and symbols.
Mashpee Wampanoag Indian Museum - Located on Route 130, this building was erected
in the early 19th century by an ancestor of Richard Bourne, a missionary and minister to the
Mashpee Wampanoag Indians. The Wampanoag’s traditional baskets, tool and articles are on
display and another room is devoted to the colonial influence of the Wampanoag Indians. Call

Boys & Girls Club of Cape Cod
A place where young people can go to be challenged and to grow in a safe, supervised
atmosphere. Open 6 days a week, Monday-Friday, 2:00pm-8:00pm, Saturdays 10:00am4:00pm. The Club can accommodate 1200 children and offers various structured and
unstructured activities for ages 6 to 18. It’s the positive place for kids. 508-477-8845.

Mashpee Community Concert Committee
We proudly sponsor the 18th Annual Mashpee Night at The Pops on July 25th, 2009 at 7:00
pm at Mashpee Commons. Raindate July 26th. Each year the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra
delights thousands at this free outdoor concert followed by a spectacular fireworks show at
9:00 pm. The Donna Lynn Yanoff Memorial Scholarship is presented to a Mashpee High
School senior. Free parking nearby at Christ the King Church (after 6:00pm) and at the
Mashpee schools. Wheelchair accessible. Bring lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic and enjoy

Mashpee Kiwanis Club
Meets every Thursday from 7:30 am to 8:30 am for a breakfast meeting at Persey’s Place,
Route 28, Mashpee. Visiting Kiwanians and persons seeking membership are welcome.

Mashpee Historical Commission and Mashpee Archives
The purpose of the commission is to preserve, restore and maintain the historic features
of the town of Mashpee. The commission maintains the Mashpee Archives, which is a
research and reference library where artifacts relating to the town, the Wampanoag
Indians, and other Native American tribes of the Northeast can be found. 508-539-1438.

Mashpee Leisure Services
To meet the needs of the Mashpee community, Leisure Services promotes
quality programs and activities designed to enhance self-esteem and personal growth while
focusing on recreational, educational, socio-cultural and economic interests that influence
our health and well-being. Activities include recreational programs, child care, camps, adult

Mashpee Men’s Club
This organization meets the recreational needs of active male seniors in the area with organized
activities such as fishing, golfing, bowling, tours and more. Meetings are held the first and third
Tuesday of each month at the Carol Jacobson Senior Center. 508-477-7718.
Mashpee National Wildlife Refuge
Representing a new and unique partnership approach toward preserving wildlife habitat,
nine Partners joined together to establish the Refuge. There are 5,800 acres included within
its boundaries; approximately 3,000 acres are currently protected (not developable) and
steps are being taken to someday include the remainder of the land as protected areas. The
Refuge protects a diverse ecosystem that, until now, has not been represented nationally,

Mashpee Rotary Club
Rotary encourages and fosters the idea of service as a basis of worthy enterprise. It promotes high ethical standards in business and professions and encourages the advancement of international understanding and goodwill. Meets at 7:00 am every Wednesday at

Mashpee Women’s Club
The club meets for luncheon and program at noon on the third Tuesday of each month at
The New Seabury Country Club in Mashpee. The club is a non-profit organization whose
mission it is to bring women into a social environment providing educational and recreational

Conservation Area
The 329-acre freshwater pond is surrounded
by a 258 acre Town conservation area of active
cranberry bogs, 17 acre Moody Pond and over
4 miles of walking trails and bog roads.
Seasonal toilet facilities, picnic tables and grill.
Beach supervised by lifeguards in summer.
From the Mashpee Rotary, take Route 151 past
Falmouth town line to right turn onto Currier
Road (just past County Fairgrounds). Turn
right onto Hooppole Road; follow past
Ashumet Holly Res. 1.2 miles to stop sign at
end of road, then right onto Back Road
through the Otis Trailer Village/Campground
to Town Beach parking area at end of road.
Mashpee River Woodlands
More than 8 miles of maintained trails and
wood roads through 391 acres of conservation
land along the Mashpee River. With cool pine
forests, salt and fresh water marshes and abandoned cranberry bogs, this area is popular for
fishing, canoeing and bird watching. Canoe
access to the river is from the public landing at
the end of Mashpee Neck Road. For
Woodlands South: From the Mashpee rotary,
take Route 28 toward Hyannis. Take first right
onto Quinaquisset Avenue, then right onto
Mashpee Neck Road. South parking area is 1.1
miles on right at Conservation Area sign. For
Woodlands North: From the Mashpee rotary,
take Route 28 toward Hyannis and take first
right onto Quinaquisset Avenue. North parking area is off Quinaquisset Avenue on the
right. For Woodlands West: From the
Mashpee rotary, take Great Neck Road South
1.1 miles and turn left onto River Road. Park
at end of paved road.
South Mashpee Pine Barrens
Over 300 acres of rare pine barrens, Atlantic
White Cedar swamps, shrub swamps and
mixed forests, providing a unique nature
study. For access to the 3.8 miles of trails and
sand roads, take Great Neck Road South 1.5
miles from the Mashpee rotary. Turn right
onto the dirt road opposite Punkhorn Point
road and Old Dock Lane and park in open
area on left.
Lowell Holly Reservation
Located on a peninsula between Mashpee and
Wakeby Ponds with over two miles of shoreline and stands of American Beech, holly,
white pines and rhododendrons. Includes 1.5
miles of walking trails, picnic tables and small
swimming beach (no lifeguard). From Route
130, take S. Sandwich Road and follow to
Reservation parking areas on left. Old parking
area is at end of dirt road on left at Sandwich
town line; 0.7 miles (look for “carpe diem”
sign). New parking area is directly on S.
Sandwich Road 0.8 miles (look for “Trustees
of Reservations” sign).
Recreation 31
South Cape Beach State Park
In addition to its 3.5 miles of ocean and bay
beaches, sand dunes, coastal ponds and salt
marshes, the park maintains the 0.8 mile Great
Flat Pond Trail, extending through coastal
forests and marshes. Also over 3 miles of sand
roads for hiking. From the Mashpee rotary,
take Great Neck Road South to Great Oak
Road. Follow to State Park sign and turn left
into park. Meet at the Town Beach parking
area at end of paved road.
Jehu Pond Conservation Area
The majority of this 77.6 acre property was
bought in March, 1997 from the Bufflehead
Bay Nominee Trust at the same time an adjacent 280 acres were purchased by the U.S. Fish
& Wildlife Service as part of the Mashpee
Wildlife Refuge. The combined properties
include extensive pine/oak woodlands, salt and
freshwater marshes, two islands, a freshwater
stream, abandoned cranberry bogs, at least
one vernal pool and Atlantic white cedar
swamps crossed by 4.27 miles of woods roads
and walking trails. From the Mashpee rotary,
take Great neck Road South to Great Oak
Road. Follow 1.3 miles toward south Cape
Beach to Conservation area sign and parking
area on right.
Quashnet River Area
A number of Town and state agencies own a
total of 440 acres of conservation lands along
the Quashnet River between the new Mashpee
High School on Route 151 and Martin road,
just south of the town line in Falmouth. In
addition to 43/4 miles of old woods roads on
the property, a new 2.5 mile trail loop has
recently been completed along the river north
from Martin Road which offers an opportunity to view the fascinating trout stream restoration effort undertaken in recent years by the
local chapter of Trout Unlimited. Trout fishing
is catch-and-release only. From the Mashpee
rotary, take Route 28 toward Falmouth for 2.1
miles. Turn right onto Martin Road. Park ad
dirt road on right (please do not block the gate).
Childs River Conservation Area
From the Mashpee rotary, take Route 151 and
turn left onto Old Barnstable Road. Go 0.6
mile, past Leatherleaf Lane, to dirt road on left
at bottom of hill. Look for Conservation

BICYCLE PATHS
Cape Cod has many bicycle paths for you to
enjoy. Here are a few we recommend that
would make nice day trips for you and your
family.
Route 130 Bike Path, Mashpee
Starting at Heritage Park, this 2.4 mile bikeway
leads you by the Wampanoag Museum and
the Mashpee River herring run. It’s well-shaded for an easy ride, ending at
Mashpee/Barnstable town line at stoplights of
the Routes 28 & 130 intersection.
Shining Sea Bike Path, Falmouth
Scenic 3.5 mile level path from Falmouth to
Woods Hole. From Mashpee, follow Route 28
through downtown Falmouth. At the end of
Main Street, take a left onto Locust Street,
toward Woods Hole. Free bikeway parking
within 1 mile on right.
Cape Cod Canal
Sandwich Marina
A 6.5 mile level trail along the Cape Cod
Canal. Follow Route 130 to Route 6A in
Sandwich from Mashpee. Cross over Route 6A
onto Tupper Road. Follow signs to Cape Cod
Canal and Sandwich Marina (on right).
Cape Cod Rail Trail
Dennis to Wellfleet - Formerly the tracks of
the Penn Central Railroad, this 25 mile trail
takes you through Harwich, Brewster and
Orleans and connects to various other trails.
Follow the Mid-Cape Highway heading
toward Provincetown. Get off at Exit 9 and
bear right. The trailhead will be on the left at
Route 134 in S. Dennis.
