Zu dieser CD
Die vorliegende CD enthält 18 Jazzstandards in ihren Originalkompositionen, besser gesagt,
Songs aus Musicals oder Filmen, die durch eine früh einsetzende Praxis im Jazz, Strophen
wegzulassen, um sich musikalisch ganz auf den Refrain, den jeder kennt, zu konzentrieren und
diesen möglichst kunstvoll zu variieren, erst zu Jazz-Standards geworden sind. Als eines Tages
im 'Realbook' sämtliche dieser gekürzten Songs erschienen, konnten weltweit Musiker miteinander musizieren, denn alle besaßen das gleiche Songbook. Die Kehrseite ist allerdings, daß viele
Musiker gar nicht mehr wissen, daß es da noch Strophen gibt, die die Songs reicher und farbenfroher machen, wogegen der simple Refrain auf Dauer doch flach erscheint. Wobei ein Refrain
auch andere als sinnstiftende Aufgaben hat. So bleibt nur die Wahl, ihn entweder reich zu variieren
oder lieber gar nicht zu singen. Viele Jazzgruppen verzichten am ehesten auf den Gesang. Die
ganze Geschichte, zu der eben Strophen und Refrain gehören, vorzustellen, ist die eigentliche
Aufgabe dieser CD, also eine dokumentarische. Der Gesang ist gewiß verbesserungswürdig, die
Begleitung und Gestaltung durch Paul Amrod jedoch, den diese Songs seit seiner Kindheit
begleiten, die er in New York gründlich studierte und mit Jazzgrößen wie Maceo Parker, Chick
Chorea praktizierte, ist absolut authentisch und meisterhaft.
