Mission Statement
St. Luke’s Roman Catholic Church is a parish in the Diocese of
Scranton serving the greater Stroudsburg area by bringing
Christ, in Word and Sacrament, to a diverse community, while
inviting and drawing all into the unity of Christ.
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS His Word Today by Rev. William J. Reilly
Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
July 17, 2016
“Jesus entered a village where a woman whose
name was Martha welcomed him. She had a sister
named Mary who sat beside the Lord at his feet
listening to him speak. Martha burdened with much
serving, came to him and said. ‘Lord do you not
care that my sister has left me by myself to do the
serving? Tell her to help me.”
A mark of many religious communities is the gift of hospitality. Like Abraham, and the family of Bethany, being
a host was something special. In both cases, the
guests were truly special. The conversations became
more telling than the visit itself.
Perhaps the anxiety of receiving the Lord made Martha
nervous. Surely she wanted things to be nice for the
Lord and needed Mary’s help. As she complained, Jesus responded, praising the importance of Mary’s role
as listener.
How well do I listen to the needs of others. Someone
might be hurting and they need to vent. Someone
might be overjoyed at some good news, and by sharing
it they double it. Hospitality, the gift of receiving others
with their hopes and hurts, with their joys and sorrows, with their wants and needs, enables others to
find the Lord Himself. It is a gift that costs little, but has
great rewards.
Know a Marriage That Needs Help: Throw them a lifeline
and tell them about Retrouvaille, an international program
that helps couples who are experiencing marital difficulties.
This program is for all couples, at any stage of marriage that
needs help to communicate with each other in a more attentive and loving manner. The next program in the Scranton
Diocese begins August. 26-28, 2016, at The Ramada Inn,
Clarks Summit, PA. Please call 800-470-2230 for more information or to register or visit the website at
www.helpourmarriage.org.

The arborist from the Borough of Stroudsburg has passed
along some sad news. The American Elm that has stood in
front of The Church of Saint Luke for decades, will be
coming down sometime in July or August. Multiple
efforts were made by the Borough and by Fr. Tom
to extend the life of this tree. Unfortunately, this very old
tree is at the end of its life cycle.
To our Columbiettes for the beautiful railings which
they donated to our church. They look great and will be
put to great use. Thank you so much Columbiettes, for
all your hard work! May God bless you all.
Our Volunteers are already working hard and its only
the first week! The donations are coming in and the sorting has begun. Thank you to all our very dedicated
volunteers . This would not be possible without all your
hard work. Thank you to all those who have dropped off
items. We appreciate all your donations.
