Would you be interested in a joint project with the Humane Society?
Cheryl-Harley Volz wants to know if anyone is interested in pursuing the idea of a joint project with the
Wickenburg Humane Society. It could take the shape of a juried exhibition/sale with the theme of
animals. Entry to the show would be a bag of dog or cat food, or kitty litter. The Humane Society could
also bring animals for adoption. There are many possibilities in this idea – if you are interested, are a petlover or like to include animals as subjects in your artworks, please contact Cheryl to work on this idea!
Call her at 719-784-4285.
Two critical WAC Chairs are empty
The WAC Board has identified a critical need for Chairs of Hospitality and Publicity. These are fun jobs,
and if you haven’t already chosen your area of volunteering at WAC, please consider these opportunities.
More details will be forthcoming at our January 11th General Meeting, or call Fred Fleck at 928-232-0232
for more information.
News for Artists
From Sharon Pearson: I just learned of a website called www.etsy.com. "Your place to sell all
things handmade". A number of friends ordered things for them and they get shipped direct to the giftee.
I've looked at it and there are wonderful categories to search for one of a kind gifts. I've looked for
one of my favorite artists and she is not there unfortunately. I see they have a seller's guide too. Some
categories I looked at are "watercolor, oil, sculpture, clothing, jewelry" to name just a few.
Maybe some our artists would like to be on that site.
There is information on the website on how to list and sell your goods on Etsy. Click here to follow the link.

At the Desert Caballeros Western Museum
Follow the Thread: Quilts from the Museum's Permanent Collection
Lemoyne Star
Lost Ships
Don't miss the Museum's new exhibition, "Follow the Thread: Quilts from the
Permanent Collection," beginning January 9 and on display through December
31, 2016.
The collection includes seldom-seen quilts that have been collected by the Museum over the years.
Nearly 30 quilts will be displayed on a rotating basis throughout the year in the Cultural Crossroads
Learning Center. Stitched by women from 1850-1950, these quilts tell a unique history of life in the
Southwest and offer a glimpse into the lives of the women who used quilting as a means of
expression. Recent research from the Arizona Quilt Documentation Project sheds light on the makers
and techniques represented in the wide variety of quilts that made their way to Wickenburg. From
examples of everyday quilts to some of major significance, this collection is not to be missed!
Attend the "Desert Stars" Wickenburg Quilt Show, Saturday, January 29th and 30th, 9 a.m. to 4
p.m., at the Wickenburg Community Center, and gain free admittance to the Learning Center the
same day to see the quilts!
Hassayampa Lecture Series
Join us Thursday, January 21 as Gail Van Horsen, Kathie VanWinkle, and Hartley Bennett share their
insights on the first rotation of quilts on display as well as modern quilting techniques.
This lecture takes place at noon in the Cultural Crossroads Learning Center and is free to the public.
Gail will expound upon the first rotation of quilts on display.Kathie will speak on quilting today. Hartley
will share her beautiful flower pounding method and how she uses this in her quilts.
Wayne Norton's still life photography exhibition, "Desert Relations," is now on
view in the Museum's Changing Art Gallery.
Roaming the deserts of the American Southwest for the last 30 years, Norton has come into contact
with an abundance of discarded man-made items and natural relics. He uses these found objects,
many of which will also be on display, to invent new stories that express his views and concerns
regarding the ethical and environmental matters facing the desert today.
All the images in the series were made with a single strobe light, and in some cases at least one
reflector was added to create shadow detail or tonal separation in crucial areas of the scene, thus
utilizing distinct shadows and highlights as key compositional components. Images are captured with
a Hasselblad 39ms medium format digital camera. Color files are then converted to grayscale and
optimized in Photoshop with a slight sepia duotone color tint to compliment the rustic subject matter.
Final prints are limited edition, archival pigment.
The exhibition will be on view until February 28, 2016.
Tuesday Talks
The Museum's free public Tuesday Talk, at noon on January 12, features Wayne Norton discussing
his process and exhibition. The event takes place in the Cultural Crossroads Learning Center.

Quilt historians Lenna DeMarco and Anne Hodgkins moderate Carolyn Davis's Desert Trader:
The Life and Quilts of Goldie Tracy Richmond
February 5, 2016.
Discussion begins at noon in the cultural crossroads learning
Center and is
free to the public. Book available for purchase in the Museum
stores.
Lenna DeMarco has been working closely with museum
volunteers to restore the over 30 quilts in the Museum's
permanent collection and get them ready for display in the
exhibit opening January 9.
"Goldie Tracy Richmond, 1896-1972, came to the southern
Arizona desert in 1927 where she and her husband
prospected for gold and ran traplines; and when a bobcat
attached her husband, Goldie strangled it with her bare
hands. At 6'4" and 345 pounds, Goldie was a big woman with
an even bigger heart--through her generosity and compassion she became known as the Angel of the Desert.
Goldie lived in a remote spot in the desert for 40 years where she operated Tracy's Tracing Post, learned the
Tohono O'odham language, and earned a reputation as the most respected trader on the reservation. Goldie
also made original appliqué quilts depicting scenes of daily life of her O'odham neighbors and the Sonoran
Desert. Stories of Goldie's life have become Arizona legends."
Carolyn O'Bagy Davis, a fourth-generation descendant of Utah pioneers, has written fourteen books on the
history of archaeology, quilting, and western history. She earned her B.A. degree in Anthropology from the
University of Arizona in 1971. Carolyn lectures extensively to history, archaeology, and quilting groups around
the country, and has curated many traveling museum exhibits.
