Mount Sinai Medical Center stands as a
beacon of hope for thousands of patients
who rely on our lifesaving, innovative
treatments. We are always evolving, always
striving to provide outstanding care for
every patient. Very soon, we will take a
significant step in Mount Sinai’s evolution
with the expansion of our infrastructure
to meet the ever-changing needs of our
patients and community. Our planned
expansion includes building a new
patient care tower with all private
rooms and technologically
advanced operating rooms, as

well as replacing our existing Emergency
Department with 43,000 square feet of new
and renovated space.
Mount Sinai is known for providing the
area’s top cardiac care, including the best
heart attack and heart surgery survival
rates in Florida among hospitals performing
the most cases. Our planned construction
will make it possible to offer patients
the caliber of facilities that match our
expertise.
With all private rooms, many offering
scenic views of Biscayne Bay, the new
tower will enhance our patients’ overall
experience. Our new operating rooms
will feature the latest technology and
surgical options – from minimally invasive
to robotic procedures – in a setting that
is conducive to the outstanding surgical
outcomes patients have come to expect
from Mount Sinai.
In addition, our plans to replace
our existing Emergency Department
will ensure that we are able to
meet the increasing demand of our
growing population and visitors to
our community. Built in 1972, the
Emergency Department opened at a
time when there were four hospitals
on Miami Beach. Mount Sinai now
stands as the city’s sole medical

center, and we are taking steps to ensure
that we can meet the challenges that arise
in emergencies or unforeseen disasters that
might befall our community.
As we plan for new construction on our
main campus, we also remain committed to
bringing our services closer to where many
of our patients live and work. This issue of
Mount Sinai Life illustrates that commitment
with a feature on our plans to open a new
satellite center in Sunny Isles Beach this
fall. Mount Sinai Primary & Specialty Care
Sunny Isles Beach will be our sixth satellite
center in Miami-Dade County, making it
easier and more convenient for our patients
to access the excellent physicians in our
medical network.
Our plans for construction and expansion
follow the blueprint of our mission to
provide high quality health care to our
diverse community enhanced through
teaching, research, charity care and
financial responsibility. In the weeks and
months ahead, we will share more about our
plans for growth and expansion. Thank you
for embracing our mission and for helping
us to ensure a bright future for our medical
center and our community for generations
to come. We will continue to do all that we
can to earn your trust and support.
TOGETHER, WE ARE MAKING A
DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY

APRIL/MAY 2014
As the new president of the Mount Sinai
Medical Center Foundation, I am pleased
to be part of such an outstanding family
of philanthropists who share a common
commitment to the health and well-being
of our community. It is because of your
generosity that Mount Sinai is able to
provide lifesaving care to so many people –
now and in the future.
Like many people, I am always inspired
by those who give unselfishly to make a
difference in the lives of others. Shirley
Harris is among those who understand that
by giving back, we actually are enriching
our own lives in immeasurable ways. She
is featured in this issue of Mount Sinai
Life with a spotlight on her life and her
longstanding generosity to Mount Sinai and
other charities that she holds dear.
Shirley was among the many donors who
attended our 2013 Founders Celebration in
December at the beautiful Fontainebleau
Miami Beach. We are so grateful to everyone
at the Fontainebleau for their kindness,
generosity and support in helping us
plan such a grand evening. The Founders
Celebration included an inspiring speech
by Board of Trustees Chairman Wayne E.
Chaplin, who shared information about
plans for Mount Sinai’s new patient
tower, operating rooms and Emergency
Department. The evening culminated with
performances by the legendary Gloria
Gaynor and The Spinners. A gallery of
photos from the celebration is included in
this issue of Mount Sinai Life.
This issue also spotlights our
participation in Key to the Cure, a
charitable initiative hosted by Saks Fifth
Avenue Bal Harbour to fight women’s
cancers. This is the second year that we
have participated in Key to the Cure. Once

again, the Mount Sinai Comprehensive
Cancer Center was the beneficiary of a
percentage of the proceeds from sales at
Saks Fifth Avenue Bal Harbour during
this event, as well as sales of the limited
edition Key to the Cure T-shirt, and we are
extremely grateful.
Saks Fifth Avenue, the Fontainebleau
and Shirley Harris are prime examples of
community conscious organizations
and individuals extending
themselves in a way that
benefits our medical center.
I look forward to working
with all of our friends and
supporters throughout my
tenure as Foundation
president. Together,

“The rehab staff was so wonderful to
Nathan,” she says. “They treated him so
well. My plaque reads that I dedicated the
waiting room so that when people came
there, they would be treated nicely, and my
husband dedicated his plaque to me.”
Shirley, who officially retired in 1983
and became a full-time Miami Beach
resident in September 2012, is a member of
the Founders of Mount Sinai, the Society
of Mount Sinai and the Legacy Circle. A
self-made businesswoman, she earned a
bachelor’s degree at Hunter College and a
law degree at New York University. In the
1960s, she and her first husband owned a
chain of women’s clothing stores.
In 1954, Shirley discovered she had a
knack for playing the stock market. After
taking a few classes, she developed an
eye for selecting companies that showed
potential for long-term growth. She is now
considered a mutual fund unto herself
and offers counsel to a few special friends
at no charge. As Shirley’s fortunes grew,

APRIL/MAY 2014
Shirley Harris has the kind of wit and
wisdom that comes with age and years of
hard-won experience. “I’ve been around
the block,” she declares with a smile. “Not
once, but a few times.”
At her age, she calls it the way she
sees it, even when describing her own
circumstances. “Old age is a rough, rough
game,” she once told a reporter. “But that’s
life.” And, Shirley’s is a life well lived. She’s
a generous philanthropist, who counts
Mount Sinai Medical Center Foundation
among the organizations that she supports.
A native New Yorker, Shirley has been
a member of Mount Sinai’s philanthropic
family since 1997. At the time, she and her
late husband, Nathan Goldwasser, were
winter residents. Nathan had knee surgery
at Mount Sinai, and they were so pleased
with the outcome that they made a gift to
the hospital and had each of their Founders
plaques placed in the rehabilitation waiting
room.
so did her charitable endeavors. Over the
years, she has been a devoted supporter of
many civic and philanthropic associations,
such as the Diabetes Research Foundation;
New York-Presbyterian Hospital; Harvard
University; Yale University; the Dartmouth
Club; Miami Children’s Hospital; Miami
Jewish Health Systems; and many others.
Earlier this year, Mount Sinai created a
dedication wall in the first floor lobby of
the Simon Medical Office Building in honor
of Shirley’s most recent gift to the hospital.
“Shirley is an amazing woman with a
generous heart,” said Steven D. Sonenreich,
president and chief executive officer of
Mount Sinai. “She truly is an inspiration.”
As successful as she is today, Shirley
has endured her share of rough patches
and heartbreak, and she’s done so with
characteristic tenacity and grace. She
was faced with tragedy when her first
husband, Jack Harris, died leaving her to
raise their 1-year-old son alone. She sold
their business and opened her own office
as a representative for Allied Department
Stores of Georgia. Shirley also put her son
through Harvard University and Harvard
Law by adhering to a dedicated program of
self-sacrifice.
“I struggled,” she says, sharing that she
would make a can of tuna last for two days’
worth of lunches. “And things were cheaper
then.”
She says her desire to help others grew
out of the many struggles she’s endured
in her own life, including the death of her
son, Jay David Harris, at age 31 and the loss
of her brother in a train crash on the eve of
Thanksgiving in 1950.
“I survived these losses, and it made
me stronger and more understanding,” she
says.
Shirley didn’t just survive, she flourished
and she continues to find purpose in her
life through the groups that she supports.
She loves being in the company of friends
and attending events hosted by her favorite
charities, noting with that ever-present
smile, “I enjoy a good party.”
THE FOUNDERS CELEBRATION
Philanthropic supporters of Mount Sinai Medical Center enjoyed a
magical evening at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach on Saturday,
December 14. Board of Trustees Chairman Wayne E. Chaplin
inspired the crowd with a rousing keynote address, and everyone
sampled a sumptuous buffet with cocktails provided by Southern
Wine & Spirits. Later, they danced the night away to performances
by Gloria Gaynor and The Spinners. Special thanks to Philip
Goldfarb, vice president and general manager of the Fontainebleau,
and his team: Scott Flexman, Jeffrey Klein, Roberta Annis, Ivette
Rosales and Danny Benn.

now under construction. The center will
occupy the sixth floor of the new building
and offer primary care services, led by Dr.

urology services. Steven D. Sonenreich,
president and chief executive officer of
Mount Sinai, was among the speakers
during a ceremony in December to celebrate
the construction of the new building.
“All of us at Mount Sinai congratulate the
city of Sunny Isles Beach on its continued

CHOOSING A HEALTH CLUB?
NO SWEAT!
What to
check when
looking
for a place
to get in
shape
•SERVICES. Ask to see a schedule of
classes. How many free training sessions
come with a membership, and how much
do additional ones cost? Are an initial
evaluation and a custom-designed
workout prepared for you? Is child care
available?
You want to look trimmer and firmer. But
when you join a health club and begin an
exercise routine, you’ll also be cutting
your risk of heart attack and stroke,
reducing stress, strengthening your
bones, sharpening your mind, boosting
your energy, flexibility and stamina and
improving your mood.
So where will you huff and puff? You can
find options in the phone book, online or
get them from friends. Many clubs offer a
free trial period – this gives you a chance
to take a class, ask other members about
their experience and determine whether
the club is right for you. Before you start
shopping around, get clearance from your
doctor to begin a regular exercise routine.
Once you have your doctor’s blessings, the
next step is to select the club that’s right
for you, using the following considerations
as your guide:
•CONVENIENCE. Select a facility
with plenty of parking that’s near
your home or office. If it’s a hassle to
get to your club, it will be too easy to
find excuses not to go. And remember,
experts say, you must exercise at least
three times a week for a minimum of 20
minutes. Otherwise, you won’t get the
full benefits.
•FACILITIES. Visit health clubs at
the time of day when you’re most likely
to use them, and consider your needs. Is
a swimming pool essential? Treadmills
that display calories burned? Make sure
locker rooms and showers are clean and
pleasant. Check what exercise equipment
is available, how well it’s maintained and
whether there’s a waiting line to use it.
•STAFF. Is there a personal trainer
on the floor at all times to answer
questions? It’s important to pick a gym
with fitness instructors who know about
exercise physiology. They’ll help you use
the right equipment for your needs in a
safe, effective way.
•COSTS...and your comfort level. Be
realistic about what you can spend.
Month-to-month memberships may be
available, but you’ll probably get a lower
rate if you make a year-long commitment
to have dues automatically charged to a
credit card. Be clear on what’s included
– such as towel and locker use. Is there
a money-back guarantee if, after a time,
you’re not satisfied? Or an escape clause
if you move?
You should make a realistic assessment
of your fitness level. If you’re 55 and out of
shape, you might not feel comfortable in a
gym that caters mostly to 25-year-olds who
are training to be Olympians.
Your careful choice can be the beginning
of a new commitment to fitness that will
pay off handsomely. Once you’ve chosen a
facility, use it!
