Neighbors urged to be aware.
Recently there have been random break-ins in town. Residents need to
be extra cautious. Keep your doors and windows locked. Be aware of
strangers, unfamiliar cars canvasing neighborhoods or parked for
extended periods of time that would be out of normal daily activity.
Thursday, July 11th., the New Castle Police released the
following:
The New Castle City Police are now investigating six burglaries that
occurred in the early morning hours between July 7th, 2013 and this date on
the blocks of E. 2nd Street, W. 4th Street, E5th Street and E. 3rd Streets.
The unknown suspect(s) were believed to have entered the residences
through unsecured doors and windows and took purses and other
miscellaneous items. Detectives are following leads and continuing to investigate. The New Castle
City Police are urging all residents to ensure that their doors and windows are locked at all
times, particularly during the evening/early morning hours and to set home security alarms.
Residents are also being asked any suspicious activity be reported to RECOM at 9-1-1. If anyone feels uncomfortable calling the emergency reporting numberthey can call 573-2800 the non-emergency number at RECOM. ▶ Action News Link

Tips
✓ Keep your car keys next to your
bed and hit the panic button--the
noise may very well scare off the
robber since they don't want to
attract any attention to themselves
and the noise will also alert those
around you. ✓ Another good noise maker is a
fog horn. They can be had on
amazon.com for under $20.

✓ A favorite: after calling 9/11 and
if the noise of the panic alarm or fog
horn doesn't scare them off and the
door handle on your bedroom door
is turning, you still have one more
option, especially if you lock your
bedroom door so they can't get in
immediately: Yell loudly: "Get the
hell out of here, you son of a bitch. I
have a gun and I'm not afraid to use
it!" Desperate times call for
desperate measures.

Mix the ground turkey with the garlic, ginger, teriyaki sauce and
pepper. Roll into very small (1/2 inch or so) balls and then flatten
slightly. The size of the balls will depend on the size of your basil
leaves. Wrap each ball in a basil leaf, starting with the tip of the
leaf, and then spear 5-6 balls onto skewers. Preheat grill to high,
then brush grill with oil. Brush skewers with extra teriyaki sauce
and grill 2-4 minutes, flip skewers and grill other side 2-4 minutes
until done. Serve with extra teriyaki sauce for dipping.

Many hot dog historians chafe at the
suggestion that today's hot dog on a bun
was introduced during the St. Louis
"Louisiana Purchase Exposition" in 1904
by Bavarian concessionaire, Anton
Feuchtwanger. As the story goes, he loaned
white gloves to his patrons to hold his piping hot
sausages and as most of the gloves were not returned, the
supply began running low. He reportedly asked his brother-inlaw, a baker, for help. The baker improvised long soft rolls that fit the
meat - thus inventing the hot dog bun. Kraig says everyone wants to
claim the hot dog bun as their own invention, but the most likely
scenario is the practice was handed down by German immigrants and
gradually became widespread in American culture.
Another story that riles serious hot dog historians is how term "hot
dog" came about. Some say the word was coined in 1901 at the New
York Polo Grounds on a cold April day. Vendors were hawking hot
dogs from portable hot water tanks shouting "They're red hot! Get
your dachshund sausages while they're red hot!" A New York
Journal sports cartoonist, Tad (Thomas Aloysius Dorgan) Dorgan,
observed the scene and hastily drew a cartoon of barking dachshund
sausages nestled warmly in rolls. Not sure how to
spell "dachshund" he simply wrote "hot dog!" The
cartoon is said to have been a sensation, thus
coining the term "hot dog." However, historians
have been unable to find this cartoon, despite
Dorgan's enormous body of work and his
popularity.
A Man Named
It was almost a century ago in 1916 when
an employee of Charles Feltman, Nathan
Handwerker, left his employ and, with his
wife Ida, started Nathan's Famous, Inc.,
which now calls itself the world's greatest
hot dog purveyor. He opened his stand in
Coney Island near the corner of Surf and
Stillwell Avenues and called it Nathan's.
Handwerker sold his hot dogs for five cents
each. He used two spice suppliers to keep his hot dog recipe secret. To
counteract the rumors of his cut-price hot dogs being less than palatable,
he offered free hot dogs to the doctors and nurses at Coney Island
Hospital. When questioned in later years about his love for his own food
(hot dogs), Nathan bragged, "I'll gladly wrassle anyone who's been living
on caviar and champagne for thirty-nine years."
It is said that a local
singing waiter, Eddie
Cantor, comic actor
and singer, and his
prominent piano
accompanist, Jimmy
Durante, comedian, piano player, and singer, resented the fact that the
prospering Charles Feltman had raised the price on his "franks" to a dime.
They suggested to Nathan Handwerker that instead of working for Feltman,
that he go into competition with him, selling franks for half the price. Some
historians suggest that Nathan Handwerker borrowed $320 from
entertainers Cantor and Durante to start the business.
To assist in serving his customers, Nathan hired a redheaded teenager,
Clara Bowtiinelli, who later was discovered while working there and
became the famous actress Clara Bow, the "It Girl" of the 1920's silent films
