It looks like spring has finally arrived. Our fourth and final quarter of the year is upon us. Believe
it or not this time will go fast. Help us remind your child to stay focused as we move into the home
stretch. I noticed that tardies have gone up a bit- meaning students are arriving late to class. As
you know, it’s important that students get to class on time so that they don’t miss any instruction.
Grades will come out in the next day or two. Please make sure that you are checking Infinite Campus, so that you help your child stay on top of their grades. I know I’ve mentioned this several
times before, but one more time won’t hurt. If your child is struggling in a course please contact
their teacher and/or counselor so that we can make sure we get them the support they need to
succeed. Their counselor can also remind them of the various after school tutoring sites. We
have 10 weeks left until the end of the school year. Let’s help our students finish strong!
As always, if I can be of some assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me. I can be reached
at 204-1617 or via email at [email protected].
With Warm Regards,
Mikki Smith

It is time for some good news. There is a great deal of information out there about the struggles
MMSD and East are experiencing in regards to behavior. The best way to discuss these issues is
through data.
By looking at the data up to March 28, 2014, four years ago we had 2,334 minor events compared to this year 968 (1,366 less or a 58% reduction).
Last year we had 1,429 (461 less or a 32% reduction).
The best piece of data is the amount of Out-of-School suspensions. Last year we had 450 suspensions compared to this year - we have had 267. That is a decrease of 183 suspensions (a
41% reduction).
Major events have also fallen for the first time in four years. I am hoping that we can keep that
trending downward.
There are many wonderful things happening here at East and staff are working so incredibly hard
to keep students engaged and in school.

Salutations East Juniors and Parents,
I hope this finds all of you well. We are quickly approaching Spring Break -.just two weeks away! We can
all use some free time to hopefully enjoy some warmer and sunny weather - this sure has been a brutal
Winter!
EPAS /ACT testing finishes up April 1st with the make up day. I'm so proud of my Juniors and how well
they did on the test - they came in prepared and took things seriously. Kudos! They will be rewarded with
their high test scores. Everyone should have their test results back within a month, if not, please feel free
to give me a call.
Thinking ahead, Prom is May 10 at the Monona Terrace. The theme is Casino Royale! Watch for more
Prom and Post Prom news soon.
On March 31st Juniors had the opportunity to watch a presentation by three area women all affected by
drunk drivers. Each told a poignant story about the perils of drinking and driving, which I hope our young
people took seriously to heart.
In closing, I hope you all enjoy this lovely Spring weather and have a wonderful, safe and renewing Spring
Break!
Best Regards,
Beatriz Bonet

Seniors: FINISH STRONG
Seniors, you are getting close to the big day. To make certain that there are no surprises before June 13, be sure
you’re checking grades in IC and double, triple, and quadruple checking with your counselor to guarantee that your
credits are all counted. Senioritis might be tugging at your sleeve, but the rest of you should keep getting to class
and getting there on time between now and the end of year. You’ve worked hard to get this far and you owe it to
yourselves to finish strong.
This week, more than 240 Seniors voted and chose the following for their 2014 graduation ceremony:
Honor Marshalls:
Bill Gibson, teacher
Sarah Motl, teacher
Marlon Anderson, security
Paul DuVair, teacher
Guest Speaker:
Kevin Attaway, teacher
Name Readers:
Evan Gnam
Erin Parker
Class Song:
“Send me on my Way,” by Rusted Root.
Class Motto:
“I don’t want to end up simply having visited this world.”
Families/Guardians:
The Board of Education requires 22 credits to graduate, from the following areas: 4 English, 3 Social Studies, 2
physical education (.5 health), 2 math, 2 science, and 9 elective credits. Credit requirements may vary if the Senior
is a transfer student.
If a student is deficient in credits but is able to make them up during summer school, he or she will be allowed to
participate in the June 13th graduation ceremony, with their diploma held until after summer session, when credits
are completed. Be sure to check the third quarter report card and fourth quarter progress report. If your Senior received a D or F in a course and may be in jeopardy of failing a class, or if you have any other questions about credits or graduation, please contact your child’s counselor immediately at 204-1638.
This is a reminder that graduation ceremony begins at 5:00 p.m. on June 13, at the Kohl Center. Look for details in
this newsletter and those that follow, as well as school mailings which will go out between now and the end of the
year. If you are interested in volunteering for the Senior party on June 7 contact Jeneene Olson-McConley at 2041558, Thanks for your continued support as we watch our Seniors get to their graduation ceremonies and on with
their plans. We are proud of each and every one of them!

On Thursday April 3rd, a team of six East sophomores will compete against other teams from throughout
the midwest in the ninth annual Euro Challenge Chicago Regional Competition.
This year the team consists of Isaia Ben-Ami, Shelby Brendler (alternate), Henry Gaylord, Joshua Graham,
Kyra Raines and Elize Steinhoff.
There are currently 28 member states in the European Union (EU), 18 of which belong to the Eurozone those who use the euro currency. The competition asks teams to study European economics in order to
address a real-life challenge currently faced by one of the Eurozone countries. The "challenges" fall into
one of ten categories, ranging from "aging populations" to "living with a single monetary policy." This year,
the East team has been examining globalization in Germany. The students have been working since October to familiarize themselves with economic, social and political trends throughout both the Eurozone as
a whole and Germany specifically, and to formulate a feasible solution to the issue of integrating immigrants into Germany’s highly-specialized, highly-technical labor market.
On competition day, the team will present their problem and solution to an esteemed panel of judges, including professors, bankers, economists and directors and liaisons from European embassies in Chicago.
Following the presentation, the team will take part in a Q&A with the panel, in which the judges will ask
students to display the breadth and depth of their knowledge base.
Should the team uphold East High School Euro Challenge tradition and advance through the regional
competition, they will compete again on a national stage in New York City on April 30th.

ImPACT TESTING
T
I
Concussion safety is an important aspect of high school athletics. The ImPACT© test is a computerized testing program that assists medical doctors, training staff, and other health professionals to better understand when it is safe for athletes to return to participate in sports. The
test is administered on a computer to each student-athlete and measures brain functions like
memory, reaction time, and attention span.
C
The ImPACT test provides an individualized baseline record of brain functioning that is used to
assess where a concussed athlete is in the recovery process and how quickly they can make a
safe return to the sport. As concussions can have a variety of effects on different people, having individualized baseline knowledge of a student-athlete’s brain function allows medical staff
to understand a concussion’s effects on that particular student.
s
Madison East High School currently offers FREE team-wide testing at the beginning of the season for each of the following sports:
Football, Soccer, Wrestling, Basketball, Hockey, Gymnastics, Softball, Baseball, Track
The ImPACT test is also available at NO COST to any other East High School athletes that wish
to take the test. Please contact athletic director Dave Kapp ([email protected]) or
athletic trainer Mandy Louderback ([email protected]) for more information on the
testing procedure.

1) Madison East High School
held it's first ever tax clinics during February. Over 30 students
came in after school to bring in
their W2's and learn how to fill
out a 1040EZ. Personal Finance
Teacher David Kruchten helped
students learn how to fill out
their own federal return and
send it in. Overall students received over $5,000 in refunds!
The highlight was one student
who did not know he could or
should file, and ended up filing
federal, state and back filing last
years federal to get an $1,100
refund which he plans to use to
pay off his car. Plans for next
year include bringing in a tax
professional to work on more
complicated issues and utilizing
e-filing.

2) Students in the Personal Finance class at East for the first
time took the W!SE Financial Literacy Test. 85% of students
passed this National test and
received a certification they can
use on resumes, college applications and job applications!
3) East business students participated at Mini Business World at
the American Family Insurance
Headquarters. Students formed
teams where they created a
business, designed a logo, motto
and advertisement and had to
develop the finances for the
business. Students also worked
with business leaders to learn
about how a company is run.
4) Twenty five East students
competed at the DECA district
competition and twenty more
competed at a make up competition at East High School. DECA
allows students to pick an area
such as Fashion Marketing,
Business Law and Ethics or Restaurant Marketing where they
complete a test and participate
in two role plays with judges. The
following students excelled and
qualified to compete at the DECA state competition in Lake Geneva in March! Carolyn Lynch,
Haley Watson, Haley Havens,
Miles Buob, Douglas
Riedemann, Sam Marten, Gilly

McClintock, Josef Klafka, Joshua Spitzer-Resnick, and Christian Cuevas for this independent weekend effort. Judging continues through April. https://m3challenge.siam.org/
THANK YOU!
The combined efforts of several math teachers and Philanthropy Club raised $1500.05 in a February penny drive. $ 750.05 will go to the UW-Madison Chapter of Engineers without Borders. The UW Chapter’s
latest project involves protecting a natural spring that serves the small town of Pujuya, Guatemala, piping
water to a storage tank in town, and then piping water from the tank to 48 individual homes. Diversion
and treatment of wastewater, a bridge and pipeline to connect people with fresh water, and health and
sanitation education were the three objectives of a recently-completed UW-EWB project requested by the
communities of La Granja and Nuevo Ferrocarril in El Salvador. More information about the work of EWBUW can be found at http://www.ewbuw.org/.

New Standards for Math and Science
In Wisconsin, high school students graduating at the end of the 2016-2017 school year will need more
math and science credits in order to graduate.
Governor Scott Walker signed a bill on December 11 that increases the number of science and math
credits from two to three for both subject areas. For the 2013 graduating classes in the district, 18 percent of district graduates only took the minimum two credits each of science and math. This means that
approximately one out of five Madison high school students may need to take more math and science
than originally planned.
The measure would give schools flexibility to award math and science credits to students who are in career and technical education programs.
This bill’s adoption aligns with Common Core State Standards currently being implemented in all public
schools. Surrounding states already have these same math and science requirements.
If you or your child has any questions about these additional credits, please contact your high school
counselor.

Fitness Warm-up: Daily expectation! BEST EFFORT!!! This portion of class is an extremely important aspect of the Physical Education
Curriculum. Credit is earned on performance and effort.
****No Participation days: Five (5) points will be deducted for the first no participation day,, 10 points for the second, 15 points for the
third…and so on. The 7th no participation day is an automatic failure and removal from the class.
Participation (Attendance/Tardy):
Unexcused absence = Five (5) point deduction for each absence. Unexcused absences must be cleared in Infinite Campus within 3 days of
the absence.
It is YOUR RESP0NSIBILITY to ensure that excused absences are recorded as such.
Second attendance is taken at the end of class. If you are not in attendance, it will be recorded as an unexcused absence.
First tardy = One (1) point deduction; subsequent tardies = two (2) point deduction each.
Make-ups:
It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to request any “work” missed, due to an excused absence, immediately upon your return.
Failure to complete make-up “work” may result in 1) lowered grade, 2) reduced credit, 3) forfeiture of credit, 4) failing grade.
Excused absence: Allowed four (4) per quarter. Above and beyond it is encouraged that you arrange make-up time with your teacher.
Unexcused absence: Cannot be made up. Any “work” will be forfeited.

The Parent Portal is a confidential and secure
website where you can get current information
about your child's school attendance and grades.
Pa r en t P o rta l
Do you use the Portal? Have you
established access to this information? If not, here’s why you
should and how you can get access.
NOTE: You can sign up for Infinite
Campus in person in Room 1023
(The Freshman Office) at East
High School and must show a valid driver’s license or state ID. If
you have questions or issues after the initial set-up, we can verify your identity over the phone
and assist with issues.
What is Infinite Campus?
Today, all K-12 school districts
use some sort of database system for managing student information and maintaining their
records. Infinite Campus is a district-wide student information
system designed to manage attendance, grades, schedules,
test scores, and other information about the students in
the MMSD. In 2007-08, Infinite
Campus replaced another system the MMSD had used since
the late 1980's.
What is the Infinite Campus Parent Portal?
The Parent Portal is a confidential and secure website where
parents and guardians can get
current information about their
child's school attendance and
grades.
What information is included in
the Portal? What do I use it for?
When you, as a parent or guardian, log-in, you have access to information about all of the students for which you are associated. Class schedules, assignments
and grades can be viewed. E-mail
hyperlinks facilitate communication with classroom teachers. In
addition, schools post important
information on the home page,
such as events, notices, etc. Attendance information is also
available. The Parent Portal allows report cards to be viewed
online and printed.
Through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal, MMSD provides an
online communication tool which
can help you as a parent or
guardian stay current with your
student's progress. From an Internet connection at home, the
workplace or any public library,
you can view up-to-date infor-
mation about your student's
attendance and grades.
How do I first use the Infinite
Campus Parent Portal?
You must set up a user account
in order to use the Portal. Your
child's school provides you with
a Parent Portal activation code.
By using this code and following
the instructions in the Parent
Portal User Setup Guide, you
can setup your own user account for the Parent Portal.
The Infinite Campus Parent Portal
is
located
at:
http://infosvcweb.madison.k12.
wi.us/ic/entry_public. We recommend you "bookmark" this
location after you get your account enabled. After you go
through the process of creating
your user name and password,
write them down and keep
them in a place where you can
refer to them at a later date.
The user name and password
will allow you to see student
information, but only for those
children for whom you are a
parent or guardian.
Download the Infinite Campus mobile app to your iPhone or iPad and have mobile access. View the tutorial at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjW6rloXrIs. Once the app is downloaded, enter our District URL hbtvtv.

TELEPHONE MESSAGES
FOR STUDENTS
Telephone messages
received from parents
for their child can become a very big
problem for school office staff and teachers alike. Each time a
parent calls to leave
a message for a student, office staff must
answer
the
telephone, write up the
message, and leave
the office to take the
message to a classroom. This procedure
is very disruptive to
the classroom learning process. Parents
can assist by confining their requests to
EMERGENCY situations
only. Proper planning
and communication
would be greatly appreciated.
PERMISSION
TO
LEAVE SCHOOL
Parents! Remember
that students may
not leave school
without a pass from
their grade level office. If your student
has an appointment,
he or she must
check
out
and
check back in to
their grade level office. If your student is
ill, he or she MUST go
to the nurses’ office.
Proper parent notification and check
out will happen at
that time. Students
who leave school
without a pass will
be marked unexcused.
propriate number to
the left or send a
note with their child
the day before the
absence, if possible.
Students then go to
their grade level office to pick up a
blue pass excusing
them from class early. Students coming
in late should have
been called in or
have a note from a
parent, doctor, or
dentist.

Students: Are you thinking about getting a job? If you’re hired for
employment, here is what you need:
If you are under 18 years of age, the State of Wisconsin’s Department of Workforce Development
Equal Rights Division requires you to obtain a Work Permit for each employer.
To obtain a Work Permit you must have originals of the following documents—photocopies
are not accepted:
Proof of age - Birth Certificate, Baptismal Record, Driver’s License, or State issued Identification
Card. Birth records may be obtained from the register of deeds in the county of birth. Baptismal
records may be secured from the pastor of the church in which the baptism took place.
Letter from the employer stating the intent to employ the minor along with the job duties, hours of
work and time of day the minor will be working.
Letter from the minor’s parent, guardian or court-ordered foster parent while the minor is under
their care and supervision consenting to the employment. As an alternative, the parent, guardian
or foster parent may countersign the employer’s letter.
The minor’s social security card. If you apply for a new/replacement social security card, we will
accept the printout from Social Security with the student’s name and social security number.
Statutory permit fee is $10.00. The employer is required to pay the permit fee. If the minor advances the fee, the employer shall reimburse the minor not later than the minor’s first paycheck.
When/where, can a student obtain a work permit?
Between the hours of 7:45am—3:45pm, East High has a permit officer in the main office-room
1037 for students to obtain a work permit. A work permit will not be issued if the student does
not have all of the above items.
For information on other locations in your area to obtain a
work permit, please call the State of Wisconsin’s Department of Workforce Development Equal
Rights Division at (608) 266-6860.
A work permit will be revoked if the student does not attend school on a regular basis, is working
in a prohibited employment, or is employed while underage for that employment.
