There were no injuries in a Monday morning accident at the CVS at 713 S. Washington St. Todd
Huckstep of the Crawfordsville Police Department told The Paper that an elderly woman drove a
silver 2007 Pontiac through the entrance to CVS at 9:07 a.m. “We have no reason to belief it was
anything other than driver error,” Huckstep said. CVS was open at the time of the accident.
Rocky start heading to smooth finish
He was a senior from Wabash
with long hair and a longer attitude
sitting in front of the football-coachturned-mayor.
It was a job interview that
might’ve resembled the maiden
voyage of the Titanic.
“I remember walking into his
office – he looked at me and said,
‘do you think you can do this job?’
I said ‘you called me.’ ”

“It was back in the old coaching
days. You had a requirement for
your players. I asked him if he was
going to cut his hair and beard. He
said no.”

“I wasn’t that serious about it. I
was in my senior year and got a call
from Bill Doemel. He had gotten
a call from the city about the job
so I went in to talk. I wasn’t going

It’s official, the Crawfordsville
Municipal Golf Course is now
under the control of the Department of Parks and Recreation. After discussion from the
Crawfordsville Common Council
and Bud Arnold from the Golf
Course Authority, the ordinance
transferring control passed unanimously.
Councilman Mike Reidy
served as chairman of the
Ordinances and Petitions Committee in Dan Guard’s absence.
During the second reading of
the ordinance, Councilman Scott
Molin asked what discussions had
taken place between golf course
members and the park board or
the mayor’s office. Concern for
the views of local golfers was a
theme throughout the meeting.
“I feel like we have listened
to every side of this issue and we
are trying to find some balance
that preserves the golf course and
moves it forward but is fiscally
responsible as well. We currently
sit at a deficit and we just cannot
continue on that path,” Mayor
Barton said.

Fire Station #2, one step closer

Monday night Crawfordsville’s Fire Station #2 came another step closer to
reality. A preliminary resolution to issue bonds for construction passed the
Common Council unanimously. Keep reading The Paper for more updates.

During the audience
discussion, Arnold talked about the golf course
history and finances up to
this point.
“There needs to be a link
between the player and the
city,” Arnold said. “I think
that’s important. However
you staff (the golf course)
you need to remember that
the customer is the boss.
Your boss is the taxpayer.”
Arnold went on to stress
his belief that the golf
course is important to the
community.
Before the transfer was
passed, Molin suggested
golfers speak to council
members to give feedback
and let them know what
they think.
In other action
Both Andy Biddle and
Mike Reidy took a few
moments to speak about
the lockdown incident at
Wabash College last week.
Both expressed pride and
gratitude to local law enforcement in their handling
of the situation.

“I said, OK,” the football-coach-turned-mayor
said. “We brought him in
and he did a hell of a job.”
Iceberg avoided.
And that’s how former
Crawfordsville Mayor
Glenn Knecht and former
City Planner Tim Gagen
got started back in 1976 .
. . 40 years ago and both
men still smile about it.
“He was a go-getter,”
the now-82-year-old
Knecht said. “He was
consistent, which helped
him. In that type of job if
there’s a chink in your armor they’ll tear you apart.
He was consistent.”
Gagen was indeed. He
spent eight years with
Knecht and a group both
called “a great team.”
“There was Tim and Fred
Davis, Carlos Goode, Jim
Harper, Rita Hamm . . . “
Knecht said. “I had a good
group. We were young but
the city of Crawfordsville
needed a change.”
After eight years on the
team Gagen was ready for
a change. He moved north
to Lowell and took over
as the town manager. That
began a series of career
moves that eventually
landed him in Breckenridge, Colo. as town
manager.
That was 16 years ago
and now he’s ready for at
least one more change. In
May, the 62-year-old will
retire.
“It’s time,” he said.
“I’m looking forward to
it.”
Gagen and the former
Ann Schneider (they got
married when they lived in
Crawfordsville) are keeping their eyes on the future
instead of the past.
“Ann and I are looking
at an RV,” Gagen said.
“There are lots of places
we haven’t been to yet.”
They’ll still come back
to Crawfordsville from
time to time, both for
Ann’s family and Wabash
visits.
“Ann’s had a couple of
bouts with cancer,” Gagen
said. “She’s OK now but
we decided the time was
right.”
When not traveling,
they plan on staying in
Breckenridge. Gagen,
who spent his youth in
New Jersey before moving
to South Bend (his dad
worked for United Way),
says the western lifestyle
suits him.
“I do a lot of skiing and
biking,” he said. “We’ve
taken lots of ski trips; Canada, the U.S., Europe.”
He was active back in
the day in Crawfordsville
as well – especially in softball. That’s how attorney
Dan Taylor got to know
him.
“He came by the (Beta
Theta Pi) house and was
looking for some guys
to play,” Taylor remembered. “His team was
really diverse. He looked
at everybody on their own
merits. That’s really valuable. He was just a good
leader.”
Gagen will be back in
Crawfordsville shortly
after he retires. He said
the memories from here
are good ones.
“I’m very thankful of
my time (there). “Lots
of good people. I was
able to get a great background for what I ended
up doing. I want to thank
Glenn Knecht for hiring a
shaggy-haired bearded kid
from Wabash.”
It sounds like a move no
one regretted.

Jack L. Heuss
Virginia Frances Johnston
Jack L. Heuss, 83, Crawfordsville, passed away Friday,
February 19, 2016 at St. Vincent Hospital
in Indianapolis.
He was born June 27, 1932 in Union
City to Walter F. and Blanche A. (Thomas) Heuss.
He attended Wayne Township and
Green Township Schools graduating as
Salutatorian. He served his country as
a U.S. Army Sergeant from 952-1954,
Heuss
spending most of his time in Korea.
He then went on to graduate from
Ball State University in 1957. He
was employed by R. R. Donnelly’s
from 1957 to 1992 with most of
his career spent in the controller’s
department.
His hobbies included working
with stained glass, gardening (especially strawberries), spending time
with family, walking his grand dog,
antiquing and IU basketball.
He was a member of the Lion’s Club, Crawfordsville
Country Club and attended First Christian Church.
He married Rita Gilmore. She survives.
Additional Survivors include his children, Jerilyn
Yerkes, Crawfordsville, Jeanine (Scott) Long, Strongville,
Ohio and Annelies (Henk) Kerkum, Ridderkerk, Holland;
two grandchildren, Alexander M. and Chelsea T. Long;
and three step grandchildren, Aaron (Kari) Yerkes, Ryan
Yerkes and Amy (Ryan) Stewart.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son,
Jeffrey.
Services is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28 at
First Christian Church. The family will greet friends
following the service Sunday in the church. Burial will
follow at 10 a.m. Monday at Oak Hill Cemetery South.

away Sunday, February 21, 2016 at her
residence.
She was born May 10, 1938 in Noblesville to the late John and Jane (Henin)
Cobert.
On February 6, 1956 in Danville, Ind.
she married the love of her life, Robert
Clinton Jr. He survives.
She was a loving wife, mother,

She enjoyed fishing, cooking, traveling,
NASCAR, and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her husband, Robert Johnston Jr.,
Roachdale, children; Bobby (Trudy) Johnston III, Rick
(Cammie) Johnston, Debbie (Allan) Mehl, Roberta
(Daniel) Wessel, Diana Lawhorn, fourteen grandchildren,
twelve great-grandchildren, and one sister Evelyn Tibbs.
She was preceded in death by her parents, stepmother,
Eva Cobert, and son; William Johnston.
Friends and family may pay their respects from 4-8
p.m., Wednesday at Roachdale Christian Church, 1 N.
Walnut St. Roachdale the church and from 10 a.m. to
12:30 p.m. Thursday. Funeral service will be held at
12:30 p.m. Thursday at the church with Pastors Mike
Thurmond and Wally Beam officiating. Burial will follow
at New Maysville Cemetery.

discuss what they wanted the park to look like
and what amenities they
thought it should provide.
Among the most desired
amenities were permanent restrooms, a performance stage for events,
appropriate seating and

green spaces. The overall
goal of the park would be
to create an aesthetic that
serves to beautify the city
and further revitalize the
downtown as part of the
Stellar project, as well as
fostering a more open,

Dr. Mary Grace Del Torto Ludwig, 89, passed away
peacefully in her home on Sunday, February 21, 2016. Family and friends were
by her side.
She was born to Nicholas and Elizabeth (Turso) Del Torto on September 3,
1926 in Harrison, N.Y. She grew up in
the neighboring town of Port Chester in
a close knit Italian family. She graduated

ary, 1944 and enrolled in the College of
New Rochelle that same month. After
graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1947,
she quickly found work in a chemistry lab at Memorial Hospital in New York City. She then worked at
Sloan-Kettering Institute in cancer research.
Her work led her to the University of Virginia where
she attended medical school and met her husband and
fellow classmate, Paul Ludwig. They were married on
June 15, 1957 and graduated medical school together the
following year.
From there she went to Kansas City for and internship
in pediatrics and worked at Children’s Mercy Hospital.
Eventually the couple moved to Crawfordsville where
Paul began practice as an ophthalmologist and Mary began her career as a pediatrician for the Well Baby Clinic,
volunteering her services for the community’s families in
need.
“Dr. Mary” as she was affectionately known by her
patients, received many awards for her years of service.
She was named Montgomery County citizen of the year
in 1972, Rotary International Fellow in 1981, Indiana
Jefferson award in 1983, an Honorary Doctor of Human Letters from Wabash College in 1984, a Sagamore
of the Wabash in 2007 and State of Indiana Resolution
52 honoring Dr. Mary Grace Ludwig for her selfless
devotion to making her community a better place to live.
She served on many boards including the Youth Service
Bureau, The Family Crisis Shelter, and Christian Nursing Service to name a few. She was an active member
in P.E.O chapter BE and a member of St. Bernard’s
Catholic Church.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Dr. Paul
Ludwig; her four children, son Will (Kay) Ludwig of
Franklin, and three daughters, Julie (Dan) Berfors of
Crawfordsville, Wendy (Kevin) Brogioli of Wareham,
MA, and Amy (John) McCormick of Columbus, Ind.
and eleven grandchildren: Noah Ludwig, Amy (Sean)
Mussey, Nick, Sam, and Mary Grace Brogioli, Michael,
Madeline and Maria Demeter, Jacqueline, Sara and Julia
Vanderkolk. She was preceded in death by her sister
Madeline Reilly and a grandson Matthew Demeter.
Family and friends may pay their respects from 4-8
p.m. Friday at Hunt & Son Funeral Home. A funeral
mass will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Bernard’s
Catholic Church.
Memorial donations may be made to MCCF Free
Clinic or St. Bernard’s Catholic Church.

The North Montgomery Chargers gymnastics
team was coming into
the County meet after
having tied the school
team record of 94.6.
Not only did they sprint
away with the County
championship but they
also broke the record
that they set earlier this
year with a team score of
95.7.
“They had a great
night,” Charger coach
Alyce Myers said. “They
all worked really hard
and keep continuing to
improve.”
Sophomore Rhiannon
Harpel cleaned up in
each event with four
firsts, ending with an allaround County victory of
33.45.
“She is getting more
consistent each time,”
Myers praised. “She is
cleaning up her gymnastics and is a very talented
gymnast. I am expecting
great things from her in
the next couple of years,
looking into Sectionals
and beyond.”

came in a close second
for three of the four
events on her way to
a second place in allaround at 32. South’s
Hailey France came in
third all-around (30) with
two third places, a fourth

“They were a lot
cleaner,” Zachary said of
the France sisters. “They
both stuck landings on
the vault so I think that
showed in the score.”
Crawfordsville rounded out the County
schools with a third place
at 75.8. Athenian Emily
West had the highest
placement with a fourth
in beam.

gymnastics on Saturday,” she said.

year Monday.
“Hopefully we can
have good practices this
week and end the season
at Sectionals on a good
note,” Zachary concluded.
