What does Mom’s House
mean to me? Coming from the
perspective of a Board Member, I envision a loving circle
that Mom’s House is privileged
to be a part of.
At Mom’s House we are ProLife. We recognize the value
and potential of every person.
We have the opportunity to
work along side single parents
on their journey to success,
and we support them every
step of the way.
We have seen clients that at times seem very
defeated with the situation they find themselves
in. Our program, staff and volunteers provide
the love and support needed for our parents to
press on.
I have personally attended Mom’s House graduations – words can’t describe the smiles on the
graduates’ faces and the way they carry themselves. They feel good about themselves because they have done it – they have attained
their goal.
None of this would ever be possible if we did not
have our faithful Mom’s House supporters.
Your generosity with your donations and compassion for Mom’s House has made all of this
possible. We truly appreciate all of you.
To our staff at Mom’s House, we thank you for
your daily love, dedication and compassion for
the children as well as their parents.
This is why, as the President of the Board of
Mom’s House, I am committed to this organization and consider it a privilege to work with the
other board members, Executive Director, Office
Staff and our teachers and aides – With that, our
circle is complete.
Blessings ~ Cheri DeBlock, President of the
Board of Mom’s House
INTRODUCING CONSCIOUS DISCIPLINE
As you may remember in a previous newsletter, the announcement was made that Mom’s House would be implementing a Character Building program that
focused on the healthy social and emotional development of young children. This included reading materials, songs, play activities, etc. that communicated
positive character traits. Patience, honesty, kindness, forgiveness, thankfulness, responsibility are among the many behaviors our childcare center highlights
every year. This summer, the teachers and entire staff of Mom’s House participated in a nine series workshop called “Conscious Discipline”, created by Dr.
Becky Bailey, an internationally renowned expert in child developmental psychology. Conscious Discipline is built on the promise of developing discipline
within children rather than applying discipline to them. This is the next phase of our Healthy Social and Emotional focus.
The Conscious Discipline program teaches adults how to respond wisely to challenging behavior in the classroom with a set of goals in mind. Many adults
can unconsciously react from a set of preprogrammed skills that may or may not be effective or wise. It is really about a transformational change that asks
adults to:
• See misbehavior as a call for help instead of disrespect
• Understand that the only person we can truly make change is ourselves
• See conflict as a disruption to learning
• Understand that interdependence is the basis for problem-solving
• See children as capable of self-regulation instead of needing to be controlled. • Understand that internal state dictates external behavior
• See connection with a child as the most powerful motivating force in
• Understand that what you focus on, you get more of
achievement
This is a highly effective program that has been used in many schools to change a school’s culture into a positive family - school atmosphere. The results have
been happy, respectful, responsible children. We will also be conducting training for the parents in our program on Conscious Discipline starting with the
September parent workshop. Parents will be provided additional information and support as the year progresses.
We are excited to adopt the Conscious Discipline program here at Mom’s House as a consistent empathetic and effective way to handle challenging behavior
in the classrooms! ~ Laura Bowen, Mom’s House Executive Director

WE VALUE OUR VOLUNTEERS!
This year’s Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon was held on May 28 in recognition of our volunteers for their
kindness, dedication and unselfish service to Mom’s House.
Thank you for sharing your gifts and talents with Mom’s House and the families we serve!
2015 MOM’S HOUSE GRADUATES
Our 13 graduates all worked very
hard to accomplish their educational goals so that the doors of
opportunity would be opened to
them; we are very proud of their
perseverance in making their
dreams a reality. Through the
support of our generous donors,
these families are on the path to
success and financial stability.

Congratulations to our graduates!

A BIG SHOUT OUT . . . . .
A very special thank you to Niki Wales and Bonnie Coy for

Mom’s House an amazing “face-lift”. We are grateful to the

On August 23, a crew from Foresters donated their time and talent to spruce up the grounds of
Mom’s House. A grant from First Investors, a company of Foresters, provided the resources for
the landscaping and a new mail box. As you can see from the before and after pictures, a huge
transformation took place!! Thank you to all those involved for doing such a fabulous job!!
