Punxsutawney Area High School
phs honors class of 2016
By Mallory Cameron
On Thursday, May 19 at
7:00 pm, the class of 2016,
along with their friends and
family members, filled the auditorium for the annual PAHS
Class Night.
To start off the night, class
secretary, Laurel Szymanski, welcomed everyone with
encouraging words. She was
followed by class treasurer,
Joseph Whitman, who led the
flag salute. Then, to kick off the
ceremony, Mr. London and Dr.
Frantz each said a few words
of wisdom to the senior class.
The top three students of
the Class of 2016 were then
announced. The 2016 Valedictorian was Carter Lellock,
followed by the Salutatorian,
Joseph Whitman, and Third
Honor Student, Alexis Smathers.
“It is an honor to be the
Valedictorian of the Class of
2016,” stated Lellock. “I’ve
worked hard to get here and I
am proud to be a part of this
class.”
Next came the distribution
of the class heart, which is
given to a senior whose kindness and good will earns them
the special award. This year,
the Class of 2016 voted and
awarded the heart to Joseph
Whitman.
“It was a huge honor being
given the class hearts award,”
said Whitman, “I was surprised to have been chosen,
but I am glad that the class of
2016 thought of me when seth

lecting who the honor should
go to.”
Following the class heart distribution came various awards
from the faculty and staff of
PHS, whom awarded students
for their excellence in both
core classes and electives.
After the presentation of the
school awards, was the distribution of scholarships. A voting panel from each scholarship chose the awards. There
were thousands of dollars in
scholarships and loans awarded to seniors to help aid their
post- secondary schooling.
“I think I can speak for the
entire class when I say that we
were so lucky to receive so
many generous scholarships,”
said Taylor Medger, who was
a recipient of the Brudnock
Memorial Scholarship, “I can’t
wait for graduation!”
The final day for the Class of
2016 is Friday, May 27th, with
commencement being held
that night at 7:00 at the Jack
LaMarca Stadium, or in the
PHS auditorium if inclement
weather.
Students, family, and friends
are able to watch commencement in the high school cafeteria if the event is inside, or
watch it from home on the
school district channel.

I doubt there are many people in
Punxsutawney who don’t think of Mr.
David London when they think of PAHS.
It’s easy to see the love he has for this
town, as well as the pride he carries for
our school. In fact, I doubt you could
find anyone with more Punxsy sports
apparel.
London has been working for the
Punxsutawney Area School District
for roughly 20 years. Sadly, he will be
leaving us after this year to become the
superintendent of the Smethport Area

PAHS Club Participants Enjoy 3rd Annual Field Day
By Meredith Gallina
PAHS Student Government
held their 3rd annual “Field
Day” on Friday, May 6 at the
Jack LaMarca Stadium.
Students who are enrolled
in a club and participate in at
least 70% of the club’s activities
were invited to enjoy the day
filled with games, music, and
prizes.
“We were thrilled to see high
numbers of participation this
year,” saidstudent government
advisor Mr. Andrew Tygert.
“Our goal is to encourage
students to get involved in the
great clubs and organizations
our school offers and then to
celebrate all they did at the end
of the year!”
The theme for this year’s
event was the Olympics. Each
club chose members to participate in different events in which
they could earn points. The club
with the most points at the end
of the day won a trophy.
“The students had a blast
playing crazy games!” said

PHS ART CLUB MEMBERS DESIGN SHOES FOR
VANS
CUSTOM
CULTURE
CONTEST
By Casey Washburn
Students in the PAHS Art
Club decided to participate in
the 2016 Vans Custom Culture
contest as a way to showcase
their creativity in a realistic and
modern way.
The students had from February
29th to April 8th to create a Vans
design that involved one of these
four themes: art, music, action
sports (i.e. skate boarding), and
local flavor.
Several students, including
Kaylee Cowan, Sadie Dixon,
Grace Aikens, John Buffington,
Dade Davenport, Ashaunti
Damore, and Hannah Duminske,
submitted sketches to the club
advisors.
“Participating in the Vans
Custom Culture Contest was a
great opportunity for our art
students,” said PHS art teacher
Mrs. Christina Young. “It gave
them a chance to explore their
creativity in the design industry.
Of the seven design submissions, four were selected to be
placed on the shoes and entered
into the competition, which
carries the goal of encouraging
young artists.
PHS Art Club members Kaylee Cowan, Sadie Dixon, Grace Aikens, John Buffington, Dade Davenport, Ashaunti Damore,

FHS provides many opportunities to
students at PAHS who are interested in
entering health related fields. Through the
club, students are exposed to a multitude of career possibilities and they get
the experience to participate in medical
related events and field trips.
Earlier in the year, the club chose to sell
cookie dough as a fundraiser to benefit the
Make-A-Wish Foundation. Through their
hard work, they were able to raise a total
of $1,422 for the organization.
“It felt good to know people in the MakeA-Wish foundation were thrilled to receive
the donations we collected for them!” said
President Jared Weber. “We were able to
reach our goal, while giving back to a great
cause.”
Make-A-Wish Regional Manager Lindsey
Herzing attended the meeting on May 22
to accept the check.
Club members Kellyanne Strawcutter
and Brianna O’Brien were the two club
members who sold the most amount of
cookie dough to help benefit the organization.

great organization,” said O’Brien “Joining
this club was very beneficial to me. I love
helping others and I would like to pursue a
career within the medical field.”
The club has helped students for years by
giving them the chance to explore future
career opportunities, while also giving
them a great way to give to those in need.
“My favorite part of being in the club is
helping out others in the community,” said
Brianna Roy “Learning more about all the
possible job opportunities in the medical
field helped me decide what I would like
to do after High school. I encourage more
students to join it next year to get the
experience and see what its all about!”
