In Our Temple Family
Dear Congregants,
The Union For Reform Judaism (URJ)
Biennial and the Women of Reform
Judaism (WRJ) Assembly will take
place in sunny San Diego, December
11-15, 2013. This will be the largest Jewish gathering in North America and both will celebrate the
WRJ’s Centennial Anniversary.
Many Temple Members enjoyed the 2011 Biennial in
Washington, DC and are looking forward to this
year’s Biennial. I encourage you to consider
attending with myself and Rabbi Moskovitz, who
will be one of the presenters.
Highlights for the 2013 Biennial will include the
largest Shabbat dinner in the world; inspiring Torah
study sessions; a wealth of learning sessions on
various topics; an evening of entertainment in San
Diego's historic Gaslamp Quarter; concerts by Josh
Nelson, Dan Nichols, Julie Silver, Rick Recht, Billy
Jonas and Neshama Carlebach; and an exhibit hall
with more than 150 vendors.
wide range of topics, the Biennial offers how-tos and
hands-on learning for all facets of congregational life
from membership and outreach to leadership development, from social justice to social media, and
everything in between.
While at the Biennial we're planning a Temple
Sholom group dinner, which will, of course, be a
great social event, but also will be an opportunity for
us to strengthen our bonds with each other as
members of the Temple Sholom family through the
shared experience of Biennial.
I can attest to the fact that you'll return home
spiritually refreshed, more Jewishly literate, deeply
connected to our Reform Movement (and to many of
the terrific people you'll meet in San Diego), and
with new and creative ideas for us to try here at
Temple Sholom.
Participants will hear from top-notch speakers
including Ruth Calderon, Member of the Knesset;
Rabbi Elka Abrahamson, President of the Wexner
Foundation; Jay Feinberg, Founder and CEO of the
Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation; and more to
be announced.
Visit urj.org/biennial13 for more information and to
register now. Early bird pricing ends on October 18.
For those seeking financial support for the Biennial
please contact Rabbi Moskovitz by October 10.
With learning sessions available on an exceedingly

- Continued from page 1 We have so many Temple Sholom customs including the chorus of shofars, and a big thank you to the
shofar blowers for their commanding wake-up calls.
Our building is safe as well as welcoming because of
our Safety and Security chair Steve Babins who
coordinates the roster of volunteer security and ushers’, these High Holy Day volunteers contribute to
making the atmosphere hamish.
Once again, our upstairs children’s programming
was relevant and meaningful. Thank you to Jenny
Glickman–Rynd and Lisa Pozin for coordinating
these child-minding and High Holy Day services
and to the child-minding staff including Tamara

work that we do.

o New Staff this year
o An inviting start to Sundays
We are pleased to welcome two new teachers to
our school:
Marci Hammer is teaching Pre-school. Marci
has been teaching with us as a sub for a number
of years and we are happy to have her join us
full-time.
Gillian Welford is teaching Kindergarten/
Grade 1. She is an experienced teacher and is
bringing her skills and enthusiasm to our
school.
We wish them both a successful year.
Those families who stayed for our opening day
activities are already aware of the talents of our
rabbis. They are bringing a fun, exuberant and
meaningful beginning to each Sunday morning.
Plan to join the children in the sanctuary each
week, for our Ruach Rally, and see for yourself.
Minyan follows.
o Consecration
On erev Simchat Torah, September 25, we
honoured our new students with our consecration ceremony. After a pizza dinner, everyone
joined in an exuberant celebration full of music
and movement.
o Sukkot
We celebrated Sukkot in various locations
around the city. The weather did not cooperate!! Nonetheless, we schmoozed, made picture
frames, waved the lulav and had a snack in
some very damp sukkahs. Despite the weather,
it was a warm and wonderful way to start the
year.
o Parent Manuals
The parent manual and the calendar are now
available on line. Follow the links on the
Temple Sholom website: www.templesholom.ca.
o Hebrew Clubs
October 6, our Hebrew Clubs will meet for the
first time. Exciting changes are planned. The
clubs will provide a warm environment for
learning. The program includes time for prayer,
practice, games and electronic support. In
addition, the grade 4-6 students will be able to
interact with their teachers and friends in an
informal environment.
NOTE: there will be no Hebrew Club on
October 13 or October 14.
o Al Shlosha Devarim
This annual course for Grade 7s and their
parents started September 29th . Over the
course of the autumn, Rabbi Moskovitz, Rabbi
Brown and Kathe Izen-Mondlak will lead sessions on Torah, Avodah and Gemilut Chasadim.

you donate a free golf game (or tennis game) and/or

“Memory in the Bible"
Dr. Robert A. Daum, Assoc. Prof. of
Rabbinic Literature & Jewish Thought
and Director, Iona Pacific, VST;
Faculty Member of Green College,
UBC; Advisor to the VP of Students
Office, UBC
January 9, 2014 at 7:30pm
An ancient Jewish source calls Genesis a "book of
memories." This description of the Bible is far more
significant than many people realize. How does the
Bible work as a "book of memories"? How and what
does the Bible "remember"? How and what does the
Bible "forget"? What can we learn about our own
memories and self-understanding from the way that
the Bible works as a "book of memories"?
"Memory in the Talmud"
Dr. Robert A. Daum
January 16, 2014 at 7:30pm
Like the Bible in some ways, but quite unlike the
Bible in other ways, The Talmud (including the
Mishnah) is a complex and fascinating anthology of
memories. How does this vast collection of
generations of wisdom, ethics, philosophy, stories,
biblical interpretations, and legal teachings "work"
www.templesholom.com.ca
as an anthology of cultural memories? How and
what does the Talmud "remember"? How and what
does the Talmud "forget"? What can we learn about
Jewish history and cultures from the Talmud's
nature as an anthology of memories?
“Archaeology and the Bible”
Dr. Gregg E. Gardner, The UBC
Diamond Chair in Jewish Law & Ethics
January 23, 2014 at 7:30pm
What is archaeology and how can it
help us understand the Bible and the
history of Jews and Judaism? This
two-part course will focus on the ways archaeological finds can and cannot help us understand the biblical world - from the ancient Israelites through the
earliest synagogues. These talks will include colorful
Power Point presentations of inscriptions, artifacts,
mosaics and other archaeological finds in Israel.
“Being Jewish Over A Thousand Years”
Chris Friedrichs, Professor of
History, University of British
Columbia
February 13, 20, 27 and
March 6, 2014 at 7:30pm
This four-part series will examine
some of the persistent challenges of being Jewish in
host societies over the last thousand years. An introductory class led by Dr. Chris Friedrichs will identify and describe some recurrent aspects, achievements and tensions of Jewish life during the last
millennium. Then the course will present three indepth case studies to explore how these themes
played out in three very different times and places:
Being Jewish in Medieval France led by Dr.
Rhoda Friedrichs, Being Jewish in 19th
Century Germany led by Chris Friedrichs, and
Being Jewish in Mid 20th Century Vancouver
led by David Schwartz and Debby Freiman.

there is always ample time for personal comment

sparking conversation since 1976. Lilith magazine
"charts Jewish women’s lives with exuberance,
rigor, affection, subversion and style." It is kind of
like a book group, but instead of discussing entire
books, we focus on one or two articles from Lilith.
Subscriptions to Lilith are $16 for the year.

Chanukah Gift Packs For Out of Town Post-Secondary Students
Are you a Temple member with a child (or grandchild) attending a
post-secondary institution away from home who will miss a Chanukah
celebration with family?
This year, the first candle is Wednesday, November 27.
Sisterhood will send a Chanukah Gift Pack to your student, upon request.
To put your child (or grandchild) on the list, please email:
Sisterhood at [email protected] and provide the
name and mailing address of the student together with your name and phone
number and your relationship to the student.
The deadline to provide this information is Monday, November 4.
Shabbat Greeters
Everyone is welcome at Temple Sholom, and we want to make sure that everyone who
comes in our doors on a Friday evening feels that warm welcome.
Glenda Guttman is helping Rabbi Moskovitz organize a team of Shabbat Greeters who
will sign up to serve as greeters, handing out sidduring, distributing name tags and
generally being a warm and welcoming presence on Friday nights. Its a great way to
fulfill the mitzvah of Hachnasat Orchim, welcoming visitors and a great way to meet
new people in the congregation.
If you are interested in joining our Shabbat Greeters Team please email Glenda at
[email protected] or call (604) 263-7156.
