Bluegrass Birthday Benefit Concert
for Pitt Kinsolving
Tuesday, September 22, 8PM
at The Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena!
with
“Witcher, Recupido, Levitt, and Witcher”
Witcher, Recupido, Levitt & Witcher are the brand new 2015 edition of the long popular
Witcher Brothers, considered one of Southern California’s premier bluegrass bands since 1985.
They will be performing at the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena on Tuesday, September 22 at
8:00 PM. Gabe Witcher and his brother, dobro player Michael Witcher started performing as kids,
but now both have left the area and gained fame in the bluegrass and progressive acoustic music
world on their own, so they are now rarely able to play with the group. In the new configuration,
their father, Dennis Witcher (mandolin & vocals) and another brother, Loren Witcher (bass and
vocals) are teamed with longtime member from the Brothers’ days, Tony Recupido (guitar & vocals) and brand new member Dan Levitt (banjo). Dennis is a fine vocalist and mandolin player,
who is equally well known for his witty and folksy introductions at bluegrass festivals and shows,
anything where bluegrass is involved. He also writes songs with singer and flatpick guitarist,
Tony Recupido, and they have turned out some great music and performances over the years.
Loren Witcher’s main career is working with children, and also as a graphic artist, but you don’t
grow up in this family and not become an accomplished musician. Dan Levitt is a veteran banjo
player, performer, and luthier, maker of some of the fanciest banjos you’ll ever see. We are eager
to hear this ensemble perform.
The Coffee Gallery Backstage is located at 2029 North Lake Avenue in Altadena. Reservations
(highly recommended) and information are available by calling (626) 791-4583. Do not call the
Coffee Gallery direct. Tickets are $20 (children are $10) and all receipts will go to assisting musician and folk music organizer Pitt Kinsolving who is celebrating his 83rd birthday on this day and
has been battling cancer.
Pitt Kinsolving has long been an important behind-the-scenes presence in the Southern California folk music community for well over thirty years. Pitt’s volunteer involvement and expertise
were a crucial link in keeping the Caltech Folk Music Society (now the Pasadena Folk Music Society) going when founder, Brian Toby, left Caltech In more recent years, he’s had a big hand in
making the Topanga Banjo Fiddle Contest & Folk Festival happen.
This show is an attempt by some of his friends to help Pitt, who is back home, following a recent hospitalization and rehabilitation stay. We want to celebrate his 83rd birthday in style while
he’s feeling pretty well, with friends and, of course, some great music. All money raised by ticket
sales and contributions will go directly to Pitt to help him in his battle against cancer.
Bob Stane, of the Coffee Gallery Backstage, has very generously agreed to allow the use of his
fine venue at no charge to us. Coffee, non-alcoholic drinks, snacks, even Panini sandwiches, will
be available for sale in the front coffeehouse. This is an excellent venue for live music, and it will
be an exciting night of live music.

Bluegrass Night at Viva Cantina: On the third Monday of every month,
we provide a showcase for Southern California’s best bluegrass bands
(and an occasional traveling band) at this great Burbank restaurant.
Admission is free and Viva Cantina serves up some of the best American and Mexican food around, and at reasonable prices.

jams, gigs, and festivals with our unique eNewsletter. The eNewsletter
goes out each month to all our members and friends via email and
Facebook.

scene and meet a lot of nice folks, as well. Bring your talents, energy,
and dreams, and help us make it happen.
