in Poland
• There are many beautiful traditions and
customs in Poland. We live in a region called
Kurpie, but in Mazowsze there is also a group
Łowiczanie. They are characterized by longstanding cultural material such as music. They
have excellent folk music performers whose
diversified cultural life is crucial for the
region.

Music
• It shows many similarities to the folk music
of other Slavic countries: Czech Republic,
Slovakia, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia as well as to
the music of Western Europe, especially
ballads, or in the composition of instrumental
ensembles.
• Folk music was created by amateur singers
and instrumentalists, playing in bands for
weddings and other ceremonial situations and
at parties or during grazing animals (here
music was used as a function of distance
communication).
Kurpie- ethnographic group of Polish population living in the
area of two Mazovian forests: The Green
(Kurpiowska/Zagajnica) Forest and The White Forest (Kurpie).
The border between those two forests divides them into regions
called Kurpie Zielone (Green Kurpie) and Kurpie Białe (White
Kurpie). The name Kurp derives from the shoes (kurpsi) worn by
the local population made of linden bast. Initially it was the
nickname given by the local population, which called themselves
Puszczakami. The main centres of Kurpian folk customs in the
Green Forest are Kadzidło, Łyse and Myszyniec.
Costumes
• The traditional Kurpian outfit, used during cultural
events, folklore performances, church ceremonies,
such as the Corpus Christi procession, Easter and
Palm Sunday, is a very important element connected
with folk music. The residents of Myszyniec and
nearby villages, who attend to the Holy Trinity
Church in Myszyniec, every first Sunday of the month
prepare the setting for the mass to add splendor and
importance to it.

Łowiczanie
• Łowiczane play a very importany part in Polish folk
customs. They are characterized by extremely
colourful folk art, dynamic dance and lively music.
Cut-outs (‘wycinanki’) are a kind of an unique craft of
that region. Nowadays Łowickie motives are very
popular and have become a product of commercial
application.
• Łowickie costumes, in comparison with other
regions, are known of colourful diversity.
Uniforms (skirts, aprons, trousers) are
decorated with multi-colored stripes
distributed mostly in green, orange or red
background.
