ENDOWMENT FUND ANNUAL REPORT
(revised 6/07)
For January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2006
The St. Olaf Choir
THE MISSION
The F. Melius Christiansen Endowment Fund was established in 1996 by the
American Choral Directors Association of Minnesota (ACDA-MN) to guarantee
a vibrant future for exemplary choral music in the state of Minnesota. Its mission
is to provide active Minnesota choral conductors with professional development
opportunities and to encourage talented young musicians to pursue choral
conducting as a career.
The Gustavus Choir
THE IMPACT
The F. Melius Christiansen Endowment Fund offers grants in four categories for Minnesota conductors studying at the
undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as conductors actively leading choirs in schools, communities, and houses of worship.
ACDA-MN Summer Dialogue Grants
Grants to attend this four-day conference are available to conductors with up to two years of experience and conductors of any
experience level who have never attended Summer Dialogue. Recipients of Summer Dialogue grants in 2006 are:
Chad Felton
Amy Jacobson
Dwight Jilek
Rebekah Kleinsasser
Joseph Osowski
Cathy Penning
Renee Ryden
ACDA Convention Grants
THE INSPIRATION
The Endowment Fund’s namesake, F. Melius Christiansen, was a Norwegian immigrant who
is considered to be the father of a cappella choral singing in America. Christiansen founded
The St. Olaf Choir in Northfield, Minnesota, and shaped it into arguably the best-known
college choir in the world. For nearly thirty years he used an ethic of hard work to achieve
perfect intonation, seamless blend and crisp diction. The F. Melius Christiansen Endowment
Fund recognizes and sustains the legacy of Christiansen’s inspirational contributions to the
choral art.
Grants to attend ACDA division or national conventions are awarded annually to undergraduate junior or senior vocal music
education majors or graduate students in choral conducting who are student members of ACDA-MN. Recipients of grants to
attend the North Central ACDA Division Convention in Omaha, Nebraska in 2006 are:
Elisabeth Asleson
On November 19, 2006 an extraordinary choral music event celebrating the 135th birthday
of F. Melius Christiansen was held at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis. For the first time in
their distinguished histories, the choirs of Augsburg College, Concordia College –
Moorhead, Concordia University – St. Paul, Gustavus Adolphus College, and St. Olaf
College, performed in two sold-out festival concerts. The combined grand finale performance
of F. Melius Christiansen’s beloved arrangement of “Beautiful Savior” was conducted by
Dr. Kenneth Jennings, professor emeritus and former conductor of The St. Olaf Choir.
Heather Mitchell
Graduate Study Grants
Grants to study choral conducting part-time or full-time in reputable graduate schools across the country are available to
conductors who have completed a minimum of two years of choral conducting in Minnesota and who are current members of
ACDA-MN. Recipients of graduate study grants in 2006 are:
Steven Mick

World Symposium on Choral Music Grants
The International Federation for Choral Music sponsors a World Symposium on Choral Music (WSCM) every three years,
with the next symposium to be held in Denmark in 2008. A grant to attend the symposium is offered to a current member of
ACDA-MN with a minimum of five years of active membership. The WSCM grant was not awarded in 2006.
