St. Mark’s Mission Statement
As a family of God’s people, our mission is:
to CELEBRATE Christ, to HEAR His Word,
to GROW in faith,
to REACH OUT to all with His love.
Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy: To the church of the Thessalonians in
God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace.
We always give thanks to God for all of you and mention you in
our prayers, constantly remembering before our God and Father your
work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord
Jesus Christ. (1 Thessalonians 1:1-3)
So begins the oldest preserved Christian writing. To me it is
ironic that these very first words express thanks to God for the
church. We always give thanks to God for you.
Thanks be to God for the part of the 21st century church
known as St Mark’s Lutheran Church. I continue to marvel at
the many ways in which we live out our faith here. Thanks be to
God for you who lead worship, you who are faithful in attending
worship, and you who cannot attend worship but hold the
people in your prayers. Thanks be to God for you who respond
on a moment’s notice when there is a need. Thanks be to God
for you who serve on the committees that organize
opportunities for the congregation to do ministry.
Sometimes it is easy to under-appreciate the effort needed to
make ministry happen. For instance the seemingly simple task of
having a Harvest Fellowship Meal requires months of planning
and imagination in developing new activities and attending to all
the details. The seemingly simply task of gathering food for the
Birdsboro Food Bank requires weeks of publicity and careful
handling of the donations so that the food arrives at the bank in
a usable form. The seemingly simple task of putting this
newsletter into your hands requires many hours of writing and
editing and distribution.
So I invite you to follow the leadership of Paul and give
thanks to God for the many and varied ways in which we are
called and respond to serve God and witness to the love of
Jesus Christ. Let the people say, “Thanks be to God!”
Blessings,
2

Tim and I would like to thank you for the Harvest Home meals.
The food was excellent!

November 2014
Worship With Us
All worships include
the celebration of Holy Communion
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 1ST—Worship: 6:30 pm
Full communion, spoken liturgy, without hymns.
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 2ND —All Saints Sunday
Readings: Revelation 7:9–17; Psalm 34:1–10, 22;
1 John 3:1–3; Matthew 5:1–12
All Saints celebrates the baptized people of God, living and dead,
who are the body of Christ. As November heralds the dying of
the landscape in many northern regions, the readings and
liturgy for this Sunday call us to remember all who have
died in Christ and whose baptism is complete.
Worship: 9am | SCS: 10:30-11:30am
Growing in Christ through Learning following worship
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 9TH - Twenty-Second Sunday after
Pentecost — Rev. Luther Routte, Presiding Minister
Readings: Amos 5:18–24; Psalm 70;
1 Thessalonians 4:13–18; Matthew 25:1–13
On this Sunday the prophet Amos calls for justice to roll down like
waters. Paul urges us to encourage one another with the promised
coming of the Lord. Jesus tells the parable of the wise and foolish
bridesmaids. Surrounded by the faithful of every time and place, we
celebrate Christ's coming in our midst in the word of life and the
feast of victory—the marriage feast of the lamb.
Worship: 9am | SCS: 10:30-11:30am
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 16TH - Twenty-Third Sunday after Pentecost
Readings: Zephaniah 1:7, 12–18; Psalm 90:1–8;
1 Thessalonians 5:1–11; Matthew 25:14–30
Our readings during November speak of the end times. Zephaniah
proclaims that the coming day of the Lord will be filled with wrath
7
St. Mark’s Lutheran Church
and distress. Paul says it will come like a thief in the night and urges
us to be awake and sober. Jesus tells the parable of the talents,
calling us to use our gifts, while we still have time, for the greater and
common good. In a world filled with violence and despair, we gather
around signs of hope—word, water, bread and wine—eager to
welcome the good news of Christ's coming among us.
Worship: 9am | SCS: 10:30-11:30am
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 23TH - Twenty-Fourth Sunday After Pentecost
Readings: Deuteronomy 8:7–18; Psalm 65;
2 Corinthians 9:6–15; Luke 17:11–19
On this Sunday we stray from the appointed “Christ the King” texts
and celebrate Thanksgiving. At harvest time we join the psalmist in
offering thanksgiving to God: "You crown the year with your
goodness, and your paths overflow with plenty." We are grateful for
the abundance of the good things of God's creation. Paul reminds us
that our thanksgiving overflows into generosity. As the body of Christ
in the world, we give ourselves away as bread for the hungry.
Worship: 9am | SCS: 10:30-11:30am
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 26TH, 7:00pm
- Community Thanksgiving EveService that will be held at Immaculate Conception Church.
Pr. Bob Kramer will be preaching. (More info. on pg. 18)
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 30TH - First Sunday of Advent
Readings: Isaiah 64:1–9; Psalm 80:1–7, 17–19;
1 Corinthians 1:3–9; Mark 13:24–37
Stir up your power, and come! The psalmist's plea in Psalm 80:2 has
become familiar to us in the Advent prayers. Isaiah wants God to rip
the heavens open. Both cry out for an apparently distant, angry God
to show up, to save, to restore. When we hear Jesus describing the
coming of the Son of Man with stars falling from heaven, it can
sound dire and horrible, not like anything we would ever hope for.
But when we really look at the suffering of people God loves, we can
share the hope that God would tear open the heavens and come.

November 2014
October Church Council Meeting Highlights
1. Work was done on the budget to be presented at the
Congregational Meeting next month. It will be ready for a
final review at the November Council meeting.
2. Russ McClellan of LOVE INC. will be attending our
November Council Meeting to discuss possible ways that
the parsonage may be used for the benefit of the
community.
3. The Annual Congregational Meeting will be held on
November 23rd immediately following the 9AM service.
The meeting will be held in the church. There will be light
refreshments available in the narthex. Sunday School will
still be held at its usual time of 10.30 A.M. on that day but it
will be a group session.
4. We are in a need of a few more volunteers to help with
the Finance committee. It is at this time of the year that we
think of them the most but really we need an active Finance
committee all year round. If you have a financial background
or just a love of numbers, please prayerfully consider if you
can volunteer your time in this service.
5. Pastor Bob will be preaching at the Community
Thanksgiving Eve Service which this year will be hosted
by Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church.
6. Looking ahead, a Healing Service has been scheduled for
1/25/15. The Bishop will be visiting to worship with us on
that day as well.

PROPERTY COMMITTEE NEEDS VOLUNTEERS
A grounds cleaning day is planned for Saturday, Nov 1.
Volunteers are needed to help with a variety of activities:

and rakes and a friend to help pick up the trimmings);

—a number of light bulbs inside the sanctuary must be replaced
(strong arms are needed to maneuver the ladders to do this);
—the rain gutters are severely clogged;
—general branch pick up is needed;
—a dead pine tree needs to come down and be cut up.
These activities are an important part of keeping our grounds
looking good. We ask your help to come out and give a hand.

First Holy Communion a few weeks ago was a great celebration
for our young people. It was great to see families participating
in the Eucharist with their children who made the bread for the
service. It was good to see so many people at church that day.
Thank you to Carol Seidel and Kristy Lopuski for having
refreshments following the service for a time of fellowship
after the service. —Della Drey
