Hearth Addition
Overview of remodel
After purchasing a second home in New Gretna, Sue and Alan
Erickson considered their long-term plans for the house – a retirement
home in the future. Their top priorities were adding a zone heating
source and turning a “charmless” house with bare walls into a
“charming” house with a beautiful fireplace. Once the decision
to enhance their living room with a new fireplace was made, the
selection process – which included long-range-planning, began.
They knew that once they retired to their new home, they wanted the
comfort and ambience of a woodburning fireplace. But, only able to
make brief weekend trips to their pine country home before retiring, a
woodburner was not convenient.
“The fireplace made our
getaway home and changed
the atmosphere of the
entire house. It went from
charmless to charming.”
- Alan Erickson
“We are only there a few hours at a time and don’t want to worry
about whether or not the fire is out,” she explained. So, they
compromised, and had Coastal Fireplaces design a woodburning
fireplace equipped with gas logs that can be removed and the line
capped once they move in permanently.
Timeframe
In seven days, Coastal Fireplaces staff built the 18-foot high 2-foot
deep floor-to-ceiling fireplace and chimney addition complete with a
Cultured Stone southern ledge stone facing.
Product Description
Because they wanted a fireplace with a large opening, they went with
the Heatilator Icon 60 woodburning fireplace with Eiklor gas logs.
Before
“It was a collaborative effort,” said Sue Erickson. “I told Vince
(Coastal Fireplace) what I envisioned and he knew what to do right
away. It was important to me that the gas logs looked very realistic
and he knew exactly where to find them.”
Estimated Cost of the Remodel
$12,000.00
Comments about the experience
“Working with Coastal Fireplaces was wonderful. Vince graciously
agreed to install the mantel that Alan made out of an old ship hatch
cover that I had given him for his birthday in the 1970’s. We had
originally used the hatch cover as a dining table when we were
newlyweds, but resurrected it from storage to add something personal
and sentimental to our new getaway. I think it is a great compliment
to Vince’s wonderful work.”
The Erickson’s were also aware of Coastal Fireplaces’ fire safety
background and NFI-Certified, which they said was important.
