MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRWOMAN
OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The Company’s Operating Results
> Allow me, first of all to officially inform you,
with profound sadness, of the demise of the late
Khun Chukiat Utakapan, our highly respected Chairman
of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer
in December 2002.
In 1976 Khun Chukiat and a few close associates
founded Amarin as a small and modest publishing
house that owned a magazine called Baan Lae Suan.
Now, nearly 30 years later, Amarin has not only got
through several storms and crisis but has also
proudly become one of Thailand’s most respected
publishers and printers. This is, not least thanks to
Khun Chukiat’s foresight, determination and
perseverance and, no less significant,
to our personnel’s love and respect for their work,
without which Amarin’s success would be simply
out of the question.
Throughout these 27 long years,
Khun Chukiat’s standard, philosophy and principle
have left a lasting imprint on our hearts and minds.
This, I wholeheartedly believe, will be a guiding light
and moral support for all of us to work hard
and dedicate ourselves to the continued strength
and growth of Amarin while not forsaking our social
responsibility and contribution.
I should like to take this opportunity to assure
you that Amarin’s personnel at every level will
continue to follow in the footsteps of Khun Chukiat,
that is to say adhering to his vision and principle
while opening to new challenges and ventures.
In so doing, I am confident that Amarin’s business
and operating results will not only achieve their goals
but also continue to grow and prosper to the
satisfaction of our shareholders.
It is now my pleasure to report to you the operating
results of Amarin Printing and Publishing Public
Company Limited in 2002 and our business undertakings
for 2003.
> As forecasted in last year’s annual report,
the Company’s income from all sources of main
revenues namely advertising, printing and sales
of magazines and other publications were expected
to increase significantly in 2002. Now the actual
operating results and figures have indeed lived up to
our expectations. The growth rates of all main revenues
were 14.65%, 16.41%, 29.12% and 6.6% for advertising,
printing and sales of magazines and other publications
respectively. Besides, the revenues from other sources
were also reported a notable increase.
Taking into account all our undertakings,
the Company’s total income in 2002 was reported
at Baht 1,013.60 million, an increase of Baht 138.27
million from that of the previous year or equivalent
to 15.80% growth. Meanwhile, the total expenses were
amounted to Baht 606.95 million, equivalent to Baht
37.16 million increase or a 6.52 % year-on-year
increase. Consequently, this year’s net profit
was reported at Baht 193.20 million or 19.06 %
of the total income. When compared to
last year’s net profit of Baht 114.18 million or 13.04 %
of the total income, the growth in net profit in 2002
thus rose by 69.20 % over the previous year and
the net earning per share was also up from Baht 6.01
to Baht 10.17.
I would like to point out that the remarkable
increase in the revenues from printing, advertising and
sales of magazines and other publications was in part
attributed to the clear sign of economic recovery
in the manufacturing and other real sectors in Thailand.
This improved sentiment and positive outlook have not
only boosted the confidence of both local and foreign
investors but have also given rise to the perception
that Thai economy was not as depressed as previously
predicted. When taken into consideration the increase
in the sales of magazines and books in particular,

it can be said that Thai society has become much
more aware of the importance of learning and reading.
In the meanwhile, it has also reflected the hard work,
dedication and perseverance on the part of Amarin’s
personnel for which I have always been grateful and
without which we would never be able to weather
the crisis and proudly become a key player in this
business. Last but not least, I would also like to
express my thanks and appreciation to all our clients
and readers for their continued support and trust.
Throughout the past decade, Amarin has developed
an interesting income structure. The revenue from
advertising once constituted the Company’s main
income now has to compete with those of printing
and sales of magazines and other publications,
which have increased markedly. Such being the case,
the revenues from these three main sources have now
been in a relatively close proportion and thus making
it possible for the Company to diversify its investments
and generate income more evenly in each channel.
Our Undertakings in 2003
B
Publishing Business: Our 4 flagship magazines
have still maintained leading positions in their market
segments, while the other two newly published
magazines namely Health & Cuisine and National
Geographic (Thai Edition) launched in February and
August 2001 respectively have not only enjoyed
the growing readership and subscription but have
also been very well received by advertising agents
and advertisers alike. Health & Cuisine, a magazine
that presents knowledge and information on foods and
healthcare in various fascinating styles and formats
has become a popular handbook on modern cuisine –

> As mentioned in last year’s annual report, the year
2003 will be the final phase of our three years business
development plan started in 2000, which has focused on
both human resource and technology developments.

in 2002 and strategies in 2003.

Thai as well as international – and a companion to
healthy lifestyle. As for the Thai language edition of
National Geographic, the world’s all-time number
one feature magazine, Amarin has successfully
acquired its translation license from the prestigious
National Geographic Society – hoping to provide
Thai readers with a long-awaited opportunity to explore
the boundless world of knowledge simultaneously
with people in the U.S. and many other countries.
It should be noted here as well that the publication
of National Geographic (Thai Edition) has not had
any adverse effects on other local feature magazines
but has, in fact helped boosted the sales and growth
in this market segment. Most recently in March 2003,
Amarin has launched its 7th magazine, room,
a magazine for home décor enthusiasts and new
generation twenty-somethings, who have their own
accommodation. In 2003, we will continue to work hard
to expand the market, maintain our leadership,
and increase the circulation and number of
advertisements for the existing 6 flagship magazines.
In 2003, all our eleven imprints will
continue to diversify their publications focusing in
particular on the quality of each title rather than
the number of books published. In the meantime,
other income generating activities such as art and
culture tours to domestic and regional destinations and
short training courses will be promoted and diversified
to suit the needs of our readers and the general
public. As for Amarin’s two grand events of the year
2003, the 4th Baan Lae Suan Fair will change its
venue from Queen Sirikit National Convention Center
to Bangkok International Trade & Exhibition Center
(BITEC). Not only will the exhibition areas be largely
expanded to cater for more exhibitioners and visitors
but the Fair will also cover a wide range of
home & gardening merchandise and services and
health & lifestyle products as well. This year will also
witness the 2nd Amarin Book Fair, in which visitors
and bookworms from all walks of life will have
a long-awaited opportunity to buy good books at
a special discount price and meet with editors of

Amarin’s seven magazines and eleven imprints.
Printing Business: Amarin’s printing business has
long been recognized as one of Thailand’s a few
leading printers both in terms of the cutting-edge
printing-related technologies and the greatest number
of high-quality books and other publications it has
produced. In 2002, we have replaced all the existing
six full-color printing presses that were in service
for nearly 10 years with the state-of-the-art machines,
which also include the fully-computerized printing
management system. We have also undergone several
structural and internal improvement schemes such as
expanding the inventory and customer reception areas,
providing our personnel with continual skill development
and training to keep them abreast of the new work-flow
and changing technologies, introducing the intensely
monitored quality control system, implementing
the effective cost reduction program and adding more
value to prepress materials and data.
Distinguished Shareholders,
> Let me assure you that we at Amarin will keep on
working hard and doing our utmost to make our three
major business undertakings continue to grow and
prosper in today’s modern world of business.
My colleagues and I have always been determined to
create and bring good quality and wholesome reading
materials to the Thai society. In the meanwhile,
we will also endeavor to expand the publication
market and transform our business into a
“content-based business” with tremendous potential
for other value-added products and services.
I am confident that Amarin will continue to flourish
and prosper alongside the Thai society as reflected in
the words of Khun Chukiat Utakapan, Amarin’s founder,
“WE WORK FOR HAPPINESS AND PROSPERITY
OF OUR SOCIETY,” as we, too, are part of this
society.
Thank you,

Annual Report 2002:
Distribution Business: Amarin Book Center Co., Ltd.
– Amarin’s subsidiary set up to take care of the
distribution of Amarin’s own magazines and publications
as well as provide distribution services to external
publishers – secured the net sales of Baht 730.48
million in 2002. A solid increase of 5-10 % has been
predicted in 2003. The Company will continue to focus
on the building up of strong and efficient management
teams and expanding the retail network i.e. Nai Indra
Bookstore. By the end of 2003, the number of these
retail outlets – both Company’s own and franchised –
will reach 65.
In response to the Company’s continued growth
and business expansion in all three lines of business,
Amarin recently acquired a 20-rai plot of land adjacent
to our Taling Chan printing factory. This newly
purchased land will accommodate not only the
extension of the printing house but also a new office
building for all Amarin’s publishing business personnel,
currently based at our Arun-amarin head office.
The construction project, Amarin Corporate Park
has been very well underway and expected to
complete by the end of 2003, when Amarin’s
employees from all lines of business will have a much
more spacious working area and enjoy working
in one of Thailand’s finest “corporate parks.”
Thanks to our rock-solid financial status and satisfactory
operating results in previous years, we have been
able to fund this project almost entirely relying
on our own savings with minimal bank loan and thus
following the policy of “Sufficiency Economy”.

Printing Business
> From our modest inception as a small in-house printing factory and throughout 25 years of experience involving
all aspects of high-quality printing, Amarin’s Printing Business Division has proudly become one of Thailand’s leading
printers. Having been equipped with a fully computerized and state-of-the-art printing technologies, we offer complete
and full-range printing services from pre-press, which include editorial assistance, photographing, typesetting, proofreading
and layout design to press and finishing. At present, half of our production capacity has been reserved for Amarin’s
own publishing business (i.e. flagship magazines and affiliate imprints), whereas the other half has been made available
for external customers from within and outside Thailand.
We have prided ourselves on being able to blend the ever-changing printing technologies with art and beauty,
which lie at the heart of any printing production. In addition, we have also taken an utmost care and made efforts to
ensure that every imagination, creativity as well as individual needs of our customers could be perfectly rendered into
a high quality printed matter. Thanks to our highly structured organization, tailor-made management system, cutting edge
technologies and above all, our staffs’ dedication and professionalism at every level, Amarin’s Printing Business Division
has become the first printing factory in Thailand to be awarded with ISO 9002 : 2000.
During 2001 and 2002, Amarin’s Printing Business Division has undergone major internal restructuring and
operational improvement. For example, all the existing six full-color printing machines, which were in service for nearly
10 years have been traded for newer machines with much more advanced technologies and another fully computerized
binding system has also been installed. As far as the infrastructure and basic facilities are concerned, an adjacent plot
of land has been purchased to expand the inventory and customer reception areas. Last but not least, not only has
the workflow system been improved in terms of effectiveness and speed but the production’s work schedule has also
been split into three shifts around-the-clock and 7 days a week.
All the above-mentioned undertakings, we strongly believe, will very well prepare us for the increasing demand
in high-quality printing services and the clear sign of growth in this sector from the middle of 2003 onwards.
The satisfactory operating results, long-time reputation and credibility of our Printing Business Division have never
failed to please the Company’s shareholders. In the meanwhile, we have also been very proud to be able to provide
our personnel with work security, favorable working environment and condition and good governance as clearly stated
in our philosophy: “We work for happiness and prosperity of our society”.

Most recently in 2002, His Majesty the King

Until now, the two titles which were very well received and widely praised by Thai readers nationwide have been
reprinted many times with the combined sales of over 250,000 copies–undoubtedly the country’s all-time best-selling
record for hard-cover translated books.
On the auspicious occasion of His Majesty’s Fiftieth Anniversary Celebrations (Golden Jubilee) of Accession to the
Throne in 1996, Amarin was honored and privileged to be able to serve His Majesty again in the publication of another
significant Royal Literary Work, The Story of Mahajanaka. The Royal Masterpiece, originally taken from the Holy
Tripitaka (the Pali Canon) with some modifications to suit today’s society, retells the ancient legend of Prince Mahajanaka
who was the embodiment and paragon of the virtues of endurance and perseverance.
The Story of Mahajanaka, a bi-lingual and beautifully illustrated book has been reprinted several times and made
available in various formats including large and small editions, hardcover as well as paperback. Very Importantly still,
His Majesty also granted His permission for the casting of the Mahajanka Medallion for distribution together with the
first large-sized and subsequent small hardcover editions.
Until present, The Story of Mahajanaka has proudly boasted the country’s largest total print run ever and record
sales of over 600,000 copies generating for His Majesty’s numerous charitable projects proceeds worth more than
one billion Baht.
nd
In 1999, the year Thai people joyously celebrated His Majesty’s 72
Birthday Anniversary, His Majesty the King
graciously stipulated that The Story of Mahajanaka be published in cartoon version. Chai Rachawat, Thailand’s renowned
cartoonist, was commissioned to do the illustration. This version was printed in black and white and on local paper.
Hence, the book could be affordably prized at Baht 35 so that the general public especially children and young
people would be able to own a copy. This explains why nearly 3,000,000 copies of The Story of Mahajanaka,
the cartoon version have already been sold.
Later in 2000, His Majesty the King graciously commissioned the Company to publish another cartoon version of
The Story of Mahajanaka ; this time in full-color based on the watercolor illustrations by Chai Rachawat. Moreover,
Amarin was also granted the Royal Permission to produce 1,000 sets of coffee mugs with selected cartoon designs from
The Story of Mahajanaka especially for sale to the public. So far, nearly 200,000 copies of the full-color version
have been sold.
Most recently in 2002, the Thai public was overjoyed to have leaned of His Majesty’s latest Literary Work,
The Story of Tongdaeng (Biography of a Pet Dog) also published and distributed by Amarin. The book, launched and
put on sale on November 26, 2002 has been in its tenth edition in January 2003 with the total print runs of 700,000 copies.
Besides those four great Royal Literary Works, the Company was also authorized by His Majesty the King to
publish the series of Royal Speeches. These are the transcripts of His Majesty’s Speeches given on various occasions
including the Royal Birthday Anniversaries, the texts of which were meticulously edited, revised and translated into
English by His Majesty Himself. The book was published in a not-too-thick paperback format with unique cover design
featuring the Royal Initials stamped in gold above the blue title on the white background. The 17 x 24 cm-sized book,
which was bound by saddle stitch, also contained some full-color photographs. His Majesty has sponsored the publication
of this series and used them at His disposal. Some were given to public schools and other government agencies for
26
educational
and official use; others were made available for the public at the affordable cover price of Baht 120.
The first book in the Royal Speeches series, published in 1994 was entitled Royal Speech given to the audience
of well-wishers on the occasion of the Royal Birthday Anniversary on December 4, 1993. Since then, His Majesty has,
on the annual basis, granted the Royal Speeches’ manuscripts to the Company for publication. The latest one was the
Royal Speech on the occasion of His Majesty’s Birthday Anniversary in 1999, which was published in December 2001.
In 1999, the Company was entrusted by the Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Foundation to produce a CD-ROM
entitled Cycles of Life, Cycles of Development: Royal Speeches given to the audience of well-wishers on the occasions
of the Royal Birthday Anniversaries 1993-1998 both in Thai and English editions for sale to the public. This was
the first time that His Majesty the King’s Speeches were compiled and published in an electronically stored
format (i.e. CD-ROM).
Having been grateful to His Majesty the King for continuously entrusting the Company with the publication and

> In 2002, His Majesty the King graciously granted His permission

“...Tongdaeng is a common dog who is uncommon. She is quite
widely known. Many accounts about Tongdaeng were published,
but regrettably, there were many departures from the truth; at the
sametime, they also lacked many important details, particularly
Tongdaeng’s gratefulness and respect to “Mae Mali”, which His
Majesty praises as being ‘different from many others who,
after having become an important personality, might treat with
contempt someone of lower status who, in fact, should be
the object of gratitude.’ ”
Consequently, anyone who has read The Story of Tongdaeng
will surely get to know Tongdaeng very closely and accurately.
In The Story of Tongdaeng, His Majesty begins the narrative
with the story of “Mae Daeng”, Tongdaeng’s mother and her siblings
right until the day Tongdaeng was presented to her Royal Master.
His Majesty then fondly describes Tongdaeng’s characteristics,
personality, and intelligence–all of which can hardly be found in
any other dogs. In addition, some other outstanding qualities of
Tongdaeng such as here loyalty, gratefulness, ability to teach her
puppies, good manners, and special talents were also described.
His Majesty backs up his observations by tangible examples
and colorful illustrations (many of which are photographs taken
by His Majesty Himself).
Besides the biography of Tongdaeng, His Majesty also includes
the accounts of some other dogs such as Mae Mali, Tongdam,
Tongtae, and Tonglarng, who are, in some ways related to Tongdaeng
The Story of Tongdaeng was a bi-lingual book as His Majesty
had translated the Thai texts into English Himself. The eighty-fourpage-long hardcover book (dimensions: 17 x 26 cm) was printed on
105 gsm. premium quality glossy art paper with an affordable cover
price of Baht 299. It also contained over one hundred full-color
photographs and drawings. All the 100,000 copies of the initial
print-run, which had been on sale since November 26, 2002 were
very well received by the Thai public and completely sold out in
no time. Until January 2003, the book has been in its tenth edition
with the combined print-runs of 700,000 copies.

the Foundation entrusted Amarin with the printing of
Yam Daen Mangkorn (Treading the Dragon Land),
the first of Her Royal Highness’ travelogue series.
For over two decades since then, the Company has
granted the honor of being the printer of this highly
acclaimed, lively and informative travelogue series.

of the transcript of Her Royal Highness’ lecture on her
visit to France in May 1980 and the photographs she
took in six European countries–was first published by
the Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Foundation and
Siam Commercial Bank in April 1981 to raise fund for
the Foundation’s charitable projects. Later in October
2002, Her Royal Highness graciously authorized the
reprinting of this title as a memento of the royally
sponsored cremation of the late Professor Emeritus
Dr. Uraisri Warasarin, committee member of the
Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Foundation. Shortly
afterwards in November 2002, the Foundation, also
under Her Royal Highness’ permission, published the
third edition for sale to the public.
Since 1995, the Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn
Foundation, as publisher of Her Royal Highness’
literary works has appointed the Company’s subsidiary,
Amarin Book Center Co., Ltd. sole distributor of
HRH’s travelogue series and other titles.
More recently, the Foundation also entrusted Amarin
with the development of a web-based E-commerce system
to promote and distribute all Her Royal Highness’ literary
works on the Internet. The beautifully designed website:
www.amarin.com/princessbook was launched on July 25,
2000 and has been in operation since then.
The above-mentioned project to promote and distribute
Her Royal Highness’ literary works via E-commerce on the
Internet has not only increased the books distribution
efficiency and extended the marketing range to cover all
consumer sectors, but has also provided all book lovers,
students and the public at large with a new media “vessel”
for taking “a journey through the world of knowledge” with
Her Royal Highness’ literary works as well as with an
opportunity to support the many charitable projects of the
Foundation by purchasing Her Royal Highness’ works at
their own convenience and from any part of the world,
inside and outside Thailand. As far as Amarin Printing and
Publishing PCL is concerned, our participation in the
development of this project is both a great honor and a
proud achievement. In addition, it marked the beginning of
the company’s new business venture into the borderless
cyber world and commitment to the E-business on the
Internet, as remarked by Mr. Chukiat Utakapan, the late
Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of Amarin
Printing and Publishing PCL at the official launch of the
E-commerce system for Her Royal Highness’ literary works:
“Amarin proudly considers this day a milestone in the
development of our E-business on the Internet.
Our E-commerce transactions and activities will be based
on our deeply rooted Thai wisdom and cultural foundation
as well as on the international standard and practice,
which we believe will most benefit our Thai society.”
Most recently in February 2002, Her Royal Highness
Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn graciously commissioned
the Withayalai Nai Wang Ying (Royal Women Vocational
College) to publish a book entitled Ka-nom Luk Luk
Khun Tongdaeng (Tongdaeng’s Puppies Named after
Nine Different Thai Sweets) and designated Amarin
as printer and distributor of this title. The book not only
introduced to the Thai readers Tongdaeng, His Majesty
the King’s favorite pet dog, which has recently become
very popular but also contained Tongdaeng’s photographs
taken by His Majesty Himself and those of her nine puppies
complete with individual biographies. In addition, it also
included the recipe and photographs of nine different
Thai traditional sweets, the individual name of which
(all beginning with Tong or “gold”) had been given to each
of Tongdaeng’s nine puppies. This colorful book was printed
in a handy paperback format (dimensions: 14.50 x 21.00 cm;
24 pages) with the affordable cover price of only Baht 30.
Until now, it has been reprinted six times with the
combined print runs of 380,000 copies.

set the country’s highest record for the number of printed paperback at 500,000 copies.
Since then, the Company has been commissioned to print several other literary works of Her Royal Highness,
which include one of her first titles in the travelogue series, Than Arayatham Chin (The Stream of Chinese Civilization)
published in 1988, followed by such titles as Bhutan: Green Island on Land (1989), Turkey: Land of the Roman

Coats-of-Arms, Family’s Coats-of-Arms, Royal Initials and Initials (1995), and Prince Mahidol and Art (1995).
Following the demise and royal cremation of the late Princess Mother, Her Royal Highness Princess Srinagarindra
Boromarajajonani in 1995, Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana graciously granted her permission to the
Company to print two special and reference-worthy books in memory of her Royal Mother. These were Popular
Chronicle from the Press: The Demise of the Princess Mother and Song Sadet Somdet Ya (A Valediction to
HRH the Princess Mother), the two large-sized books Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana toiling over by
collecting daily news clippings on the demise and royal cremation of the late Princess Mother from several local
newspapers for many days. Her Royal Highness also wrote some additional notes and remarks by herself.
Apart from printing, the Company was also greatly honored and gratified to have received Her Royal Highness’
authorization to distribute some of her literary works since February 1996.

which was later televised on TV Channel 3 on

Geographic Championship 2002” was Ms. Ngamjitr
Saengchanreung, a brilliant student from Wat Singh
Matayomsuksa School in Bangkok. Ngamjitr received
the scholarship worth Baht 100,000 with the certificate,
whereas her school also got a prize-money of Baht
50,000 together with the testimonial plaque.
The second prize-comprising Baht 50,000 scholarship
and a certificate-had gone to Ms. Netikan Ruepngam,
a representative of Boonyawat Withayalai in Lampang
Province. Netikan’s school also received Baht 30,000
with the testimonial plaque.

were also entitled to honorable mention awards, which
comprised Baht 20,000 scholarship and a certificate
for each student and another Baht 15,000 together
with a testimonial plaque for his or her school.
> Amarin fervently hoped that the “National
Geographic Championship 2002” will be a steppingstone and gateway for outstanding Thai students to
take part in the international “National Geographic
Olympiad” organized by the National Geographic
Society in the near future.

entertaining activities for the general public as well as
students. In 2002, the Magazine, with official endorsement
from the Ministry of Education, held a knowledge-based,
national level Q&A competition called, “National Geographic
Championship 2002”. The Project, which was aimed at
promoting studying activities for young people and making
Thai society a genuine “learning society”, covered every
area of academic field from science, social sciences and
humanities to geography, history and culture.
> The competition was divided into three rounds.
To begin with, all participating students had taken a
nation-wide examination held simultaneously in August
2002, after which 50 highest scores makers were selected.
These 50 semi-finalists then took part in a “geographic

an increase of Baht 138.27 million from that of 2001 or
equivalent to 15.80 % rise year-on-year. As a result,

Y
Annual Report 2002:
50%
> The Company’s total income in 2002 can be analyzed
based on the following revenue structure:
46
Printing Services Revenue: In 2002, the total
revenue from Amarin’s printing business was reported
at Baht 295.50 million, an increase of 16.41 % from
that of the previous year. Such an impressive
increase was very much owing to the replacement
of all the existing full-color printing presses with much
more modern and state-of-the-art machines with
a fully computerized printing management system.
The installation of these new printing presses – started
in the middle of 2001 – has completed in the first
quarter of 2002. To increase the overall capacity of
our production, another automatic binding machine and
its supporting system has also been purchased and
installed. Thanks to the increased capacity and more
advanced technologies, Amarin’s printing business was
in a much better position to receive and handle more
printing jobs. As a result, the revenue from printing
services in 2002 – both from Amarin’s publishing
business i.e. magazines and other publications and
external customers – increased markedly compared to
that of the last year. Importantly still, in the fourth
quarter of 2002, Amarin has been greatly honored
and privileged to receive His Majesty’s the King’s
Permission to print and distribute His latest Literary
Work, The Story of Tongdaeng, of which the total
print-run has, until early 2003 reached 700,000 copies.
Such a large-scale publication has also considerably
contributed to the increase in this year’s revenue from
printing services.

Advertising Revenue: In 2002, the total revenue from
advertising sales – generated by the Company’s six
flagship magazines namely Praew, Sudsapda, Baan
Lae Suan, Cheewajit, Health & Cuisine and National
Geographic (Thai-Edition) – was reported at Baht
327.52 million, an increase of 14.65 % compared with
the figure of the previous year. The steady increase
in the advertising revenue over the past four
consecutive years has reflected the promising sign of
economic recovery in Thailand. Despite the September
11th incident, the advertising revenue in the fourth
quarter of 2001 was slightly below the target but still
higher when compared to that of the same period in
2000. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our
strong and efficient advertising sales teams, who have
very well managed to keep the long-term customers
and constantly looked for prospective clients,
our advertising revenue in 2002 have thus increased
markedly.
Cost and Expenses: The total sales-related cost and
expenses in 2002 were reported at Baht 606.95 million,
a 6.52 % rise from those of the previous year. Such an
increase was proportional to the growing revenues from
the Company’s three main lines of business undertakings.
Sales-related Cost and Administration Expenses:
The Company’s total sales-related cost and other administration
expenses amounted to Baht 150.07 million or equivalent to
7.06 % increase from 2001’s figures. The relatively modest
increase was due to the effective cost cutting and expense
control measures.
Interest Expenses: The Company’s financial obligation
arising from interest expenses has been markedly low
during 2001 - 2002, not least thanks to the considerable
surplus cash flow and the effective risk management policy.
The Company has also been very careful about its major
investments choosing to rely on its savings rather than
borrowing from the financial institutions and thus minimizing
the possible burden of interest expenses.
Revenue from Magazines and Publications Sales:
In 2002, the sales of the Company’s 6 flagship
magazines and other publications from our 11 affiliate
imprints amounted to Baht 317.86 million or
17.03 % up from the previous year. Such an increase
was in part attributed to a number of best-selling
pocketbook titles that have been reprinted several
times.
Net Profit: The Company’s net profit in 2002 was reported
at Baht 193.02 million, a sharp increase of 69.20 % when
compared to Baht 114.18 million of the previous year.
As a result, this year’s net earning per share was up
from Baht 6.01 in 2001 to Baht 10.17. Such satisfactory
operating results and remarkable financial status were
undoubtedly attributed to the Company’s good and highly
effective governance.

3. Risk Factors
There are 2 risk factors that may affect the company’s operations. Namely, Industry Risk
and Corporate Risk.
> 1. Industry Risk: The essential raw material for the printing business is paper. The price of paper fluctuates
depending on the world market and the economic situation, as well as the government’s policies and measures.
For instance, the government’s decision to float the Baht had adverse effect on the business especially when
the price of paper has consistently gone up.
Risk Management Measures
Printing Business: If the price of paper fluctuates significantly, then it is necessary for the company to place
purchase order for paper 3 - 6 months in advance. This is to minimize the risk associated with the unstable
price. If the price fluctuation is minimal, the company will only purchase paper sufficient for current requirement.
In regard to sources, the company has appointed a Source Identification Committee to identify and select
reliable sources. Usually, the company will maintain a list of major distributors to ensure supplies are available
when needed.
In regard to competition, the company has continuously invested in the development
of its printing technology in order to maintain quality and the lead in the industry.

To minimize the payment risk factor, the company has implemented measures on credit line and credit
term, with specific procedures for individual customers/debtors where necessary. Customer/debtors are also
required to pay up before new service can be acquired. Collection is also being closely managed and
monitored to ensure effectiveness.

> 2. Corporate Risk: The major risk element is the ability of the company’s debtors to make timely payment
for services provided. The company, however, has in place preventive measures to ensure debtors’ payment.
Such measures include screening customers, securing financial guarantee from new customers, effective debt
collection procedures, and regular calls to customer.
Annual Report 2002:
Publication Business: There is also a risk factor regarding competition in magazine and pocket book publication.
In order to keep competitors at bay. The company has emphasized content quality and consistent improvement
in designs and looks. This applies to both magazine and pocketbooks.
In regard to copy rights, the company has secured a number of quality writers that create quality materials
for the company’s magazines. Also, the company has retained many freelance writers who produce fine literary
works regularly or periodically. In order to maintain quality writters, the company ensures appropriate
compensation is provided. As a result, the company has been entrusted by many quality writers to publish
and distribute their works.

3. Financial Risk: The Company manages its financial risks through appropriate financial instruments
to minimize the risk of held portfolio, not for speculation.
3.1 Interest Rate Risk
Due to volatility of interest market, the Company is exposed to interest rate risk as a portion of the
Company’s current assets and liabilities will be used as deposit and loan to facilitate the Company’s financial
function. However, when considering our better-than-market return yields and loan rates, and cautious investment
with possible use of our saving fund, the Company believes that we are exposed to this kind of risk at the
acceptable level.
3.2 Exchange Rate Risk
Currently, equipment purchases in foreign currency are the main sources of exchange rate risk exposure.
The Company manages the exchange rate risk by buying forward contracts to cover the risk.
