DO YOU KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS?
Introducing George Lewis
George was born and raised in Black River Falls, Wisconsin, the Ho Chunk Nation, and was the
youngest of 9 children. George loved playing sports with his classmates and friends at the Ho
Chunk Indian Mission School. As kids, they would go out on “safari’s” meaning he and his friends
hunted anything that moved and fished the Black river selling their bounty to the elders. As a teen
he would pick cherries and other crops raking in 25 cents a pail, carrying on the tradition that the Ho
Chunk people respected the land and took care to harvest only what they needed and never with
greed.
After vocational school, George was a welder assembling Chevy car frames in Milwaukee for a year
before joining the Army. After basic training George was to be stationed in Europe but heard about
a conflict in Vietnam and felt it was his Native American heritage to go where he would be most
useful. His initial request for a change in military occupation and destination was denied but coming
from a long history of warriors in their tribe and wanting to be in the middle of the action, he was
finally successful and re-assigned to Vietnam. After serving in the Army for 3 years and
experiencing the horror of Vietnam for 20 months, George decided he had fulfilled his military
commitment and returned home. With the shock of the war fresh in his mind, George recalls that he
was kind of a lost soul for a while, trying to understand the negative reaction of the American people
against the war and the nightmares from combat.
After driving a tractor trailer around the country, George settled for a steady job working for the
Jackson County Highway Department. At age 48, George earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Public
Administration and retired from the Highway Department at 55. With more time available, George
decided he had so much to offer and getting back to his roots, returned to make a difference as part
of the Ho Chunk Nation. George was a personnel director and former Legislator but always knew
his voice could best be heard as President. He knew something was wrong with the business side
of the Nation and used that as part of his campaign platform. George Lewis was sworn in as
President of the Ho Chunk Nation in July 2003 and automatically became a Tribal Elder when he
turned 60. A year later he fulfilled his campaign promise and hired an accounting firm to audit the
Nations books. The results were bleak and George centered on addressing the problematic areas.
George retired again after 4 years, this time for good.

One fateful day while working with the Highway Department, George met a beautiful woman named
Ruth, changing his life forever. Within a year they were married and embarked on a wonderful life
together, to date 25 years and counting. They loved to travel and after George retired they took a
memorable trip to Tel Dor Israel, experiencing first hand, an archeological dig. George credits Ruth
for doing all the hard work on the dig but does take credit for washing the pottery that she uncovered.
George also credits Ruth for asking, “Why do we live in Wisconsin?” which prompted an immediate
road trip to Florida. After a brief stay in Tallahassee, they traveled along the coastline in search of the
perfect area to retire, driving right by Point Brittany, which left a lasting impression. With the VA
hospital and reasonable housing prices, St. Petersburg seemed a great choice and they purchased a
condo in a community called Arbor Grove but the visions of Point Brittany never faded. In 2009 they
fulfilled their dream and purchased a condo in Building Six and love every minute of it! These days,
George can be found in the billiards room and placing a few pieces to the jigsaw puzzle in the library.
He is President of the local Lions Club, active in the community and enjoys spending time going to
various events with Ruth. Welcome to Point Brittany friend!

DO YOU HAVE A VIP CARD?
Point Brittany residents can save money from area businesses by purchasing a V.I.P. card. The
card is supported by more than 50 cooperative area businesses who offer a variety of discounts,
most of them 10 percent. The cost of the card is only $3 per year. A list of the participating
merchants with their addresses and telephone numbers are available at the Residents Club Office.
Card holders should check with the merchant prior to use to make sure they will honor it at the time
of service. They also should check at the Residents Club office periodically to receive an updated
merchant list. Residents may help by asking businesses if they would be interested in participating
in the program, and if so, contact the Residents Club Office.

AFTER THE STORM
Safety Tips and Recovery Assistance
After the storm, it's time to assess the damage. Keep your battery operated radio close by for news about
damage, road closures, power outages and other emergency instructions. With 3-14 days of uncertainty
depending on the storm, you will need to rely upon what you've stored for food, water, medications, and
entertainment. If the county is hit by a hurricane, it could be weeks or months before life gets back to
normal. Use the following safety steps during recovery:
Food Safety and Guidelines:
 Before the storm, take inventory of the items in your refrigerator and freezer. Put this list on the
refrigerator door so you know where everything is located.

Keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. Minimal freezer door openings can
keep frozen items safe for about two days.

Refrigerated foods should be safe if the power is out for no more than four to six hours. Discard any
food that has been above 40 degrees F' for two hours and any food that has an unusual odor, color or
texture.
Never taste food to determine safety!

If the power is off more than six hours, transfer refrigerated items to an insulated cooler filled with ice or
frozen gel packs. Keep a thermostat in the cooler to ensure the food stays at 40 degrees F' or below,
Restroom Facilities:
 When instructed, do not use or flush your toilet. Powered sewer lift stations may be out of order, which
could lead to sewage back-up in your condo.

Create an emergency toilet by using your toilet bowl or a five-gallon plastic bucket with a tight fitting lid.
Line the inside with a heavy duty trash can bag and use bleach as a disinfectant. If using your toilet
bowl, turn off the water to it first and flush one last time to empty before lining with a trash bag. Do not
use kitty litter in your emergency toilet.
Re-entering the County:
If you have evacuated out of area, returning home can have some challenges if a storm has done significant
damage to the county. Bridges and roads may be closed due to damage, flooding or debris.
Officials may have entire areas closed off to everyone, including residents. It is important to remember
that coming home is not a guarantee. So before heading home, be sure to watch or read the news to learn
the latest information about road conditions and damage reports for Pinellas County and surrounding areas.
