3. PELTERET FAMILY ORIGINS
The name Pelteret derives from the Old French for "fellmonger………furrier………dresser of
pelts or animal skins" and is rare.
Names of similar origin include Pelletier, Peltier, Pelter, Pilter, Pelzer (French),
van Pelt (German), Pellitteri, Pillitteri, Impellitteri, Impelizzeri (Italian).
Crests for many of these and other similar names are well documented (J B Rietstap).
The Pelteret family appears to have been Protestant-Huguenot and originates from the
Champagne, Lorraine and Cote d’Or districts of France. It has been postulated that
members of the family migrated at the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes on 18 October
1685 to the state of Brandenburg, Prussia and may have been in the retinue of George I
of Hanover when he journeyed to take the English throne in 1714. Correspondence with
Royal Archive, Windsor tends to discount the latter. The family name appears in the
archives in Den Hague, Brandenburg, Berlin and in parish registers in central London,
England.
On the other hand, records exist suggesting that the name may have reached England far
earlier. William le Peleter (unpublished Assize Roll, Yorkshire: 1219), Adam le Peletur
(Subsidy Rolls, Sussex 1296), Henry le Pelter (41st Annual Report [1880] of Deputy
Keeper of Public Records in London, 1301). In the Assize Roll of 1309 (Société
Jersiaise 1903 No.18) the name le Pelletier appears and is thought to be of NormanFrench origin having arrived in Jersey and Guernsey during the reign of King John
(1167-1216), when the islands were attached to the English crown.
It is reputed that the name traveled to The Americas in the 1860's. To-date, only two
records, one dating from the 1600’s and the other the 1800’s, have been found.
The name arrived in South Africa when, in 1833, a certain George Pelteret was taken in
by the Children's Friend Society, London and shipped aboard the Charles Kerr from
Cowes, captained by a Mr. Brodie (departure 21 January 1833, arrived Cape Town 11 May
1833) to become a house servant to one R W Eaton.
Richard Webber Eaton (1781-1861) arrived the Cape Town aboard the Garland on 26
September 1818. He went into partnership with his brother-in-law J B Ebden (Ebden and
Eaton, Merchants) in the Heerengracht (1819) and later Berg Street (1820). In March
1822, he was the founder of the Commercial Exchange, the forerunner of the Cape Town
Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and went on to be prominent in Cape Town commercial
society. He had two children, wife unknown, Mary Theophila ~ 12 May 1819 and Francis
James ~ 14 December 1821.
The Children's Friend Society was founded in London in 1830, as "The Society for the
Suppression of Juvenile Vagrancy through the reformation and emigration of children".
The first group of children was sent to the Cape Colony in South Africa and the Swan
River Colony in Australia in 1832 and in August 1833, 230 children were shipped to
Toronto and New Brunswick, Canada (Ref: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Home_Children; The

Emma Johanna Sawyer (EJS) / Williams / Pelteret
A De Lunatico Inquirendo was brought against EJS by her adopted daughter (and a midwife of Wynberg), Ivy Emma
Sawyer, her care-giver.
The matter arose in the following way : EJS was married to one, Samuel Thomas Williams. A son, Leger George
Williams married to Fredericka Elis née TRAUTMANN (FET) was said to have died intestate on 8 March 1917.
Buried Plumstead Cemetery. In fact his will is available, dated 16 January 1916 and quite specific in its
instructions. MOOC 13/1/3979.139
He owned land and 4 cottages in Rutland Street, Claremont which it was “purported” he intended leaving to his
mother, and which, on the death of EJS was to devolve to his wife. Being married in community of property, an
undivided half was transferred to his wife, FET, on 11 February 1933.
The wife at no time derived revenue from or had access to the property; and by the time this case was
brought, FET claimed that debts in the form of rates and taxes were accruing, rentals were not being paid,
and the properties were falling into a state of disrepair.
The assessed value of the properties was £880.
FET demanded : * A true and full accounting as of 8 March 1917, her husband’s date of death * A right to
debate (interrogate)the account. * Payment of outstanding accumulated revenues owing to her * The costs of
bringing the case
EJS was interviewed by Verner Gilbert Russell on 30 June 1935 and Dr John Alexander Currie on 14 May and 2
July 1935, both of whom found her frail and infirm (being over 80 years of age), incapable of understanding
the matter at hand and unable to manage her own affairs.
The order was granted on 14 August 1935. John Seton Delbridge was appointed by Mr. Justice Fischer as a
Curator Bonis.
Leger Sydney Thomas Williams went on to marry Annette Dorothy JAMES at St. Luke’s, Woodstock on 10 November
1924, witnesses being F E Williams and J Williams. They were divorced on 19 June 1931. Offspring 2 daughters
bc. 1925 and 1927. CSC 2/1/1/1200.112

The book "The Durban Light Infantry" Volume II, 1935 to 1960, by Lieutenant-Colonel AC Martin, published in
1969, on page 463 has this entry :
South African Engineers Coy attached to Royal Durban Light Infantry Roll of Honour Sapper Pelteret, E.J.,
[sic] Commonwealth, Killed in Action, 29 May 1942. On page 107, it says Sapper E G Pelteret was badly injured
... and died as a POW.
However, EG Pelteret does not in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Register or on the Durban Light
Infantry Roll of Honour for he did not die. He was captured at Gazala and sent as a P.O.W. to Northern
Italy. Whilst there, he was badly wounded and repatriated to the Union in a P.O.W. exchange in 1943.
The book is an excellent reference and it contains information taken from the Regimental War Diaries.
Because the Regiment heard nothing more from Pelteret it was probably assumed that he had died and somebody
entered this information as such, which then became lore.
The military record supplied by the South African National Defence Force in brief reads as follows:
12509 Pelteret, Edward George b. 24.9.09, a Woodworking Machinist was attested to the 2nd Field Coy, SA
Engineering Corp; missing in action May 1942; injured – fractured pelvis - whilst P.O.W; repatriated in
prisoner exchange Apr 1943; demobilised medically unfit Sept 1945; to a position of Storeman in the SAR&H.
For services during WW II he war awarded1939-45 Star and Africa Star
