CRC report
Hello,
Welcome to the March edition of the Sturt Pea. Throughout the month of February the
Community Resource Centre restarted the Wednesday morning weekly Story and
Rhyme Time program, hosted the Teddy Bears Picnic (Page 13) for the 0-5 year old
children and the first monthly Seniors Morning Tea for 2016. Thankyou to everyone
who participated in these programs and events. We would love to welcome some new
faces to these programs.
Throughout March the CRC will be delivering 3 Filipino cooking classes (pages
14,15,16) with Julieta Best. These will be from 6:00pm to accommodate workers and
will be held in the Shire Hall kitchen. Unfortunately there will be limited numbers
available for these classes so please RSVP to the Community Resource centre ASAP on
(08) 9031 1800.
The March Seniors Morning Tea will be held on Thursday 31st March at 10am. All
Seniors are welcome to attend and enjoy morning tea, bingo, trivia and we might just
have a couple of Birthday’s to celebrate this month……
The Laverton Community Resource Centre is now on FACEBOOK! Please like our page
and keep up to date with upcoming programs and events.
The Community Resource Centre will be closed Good Friday 25th March and Easter
Monday 28th March. The staff all wish you a Happy and Safe Easter Break.
Enjoy the read,

Teddy bears picnic
On Wednesday 24th February the Laverton Community Resource Centre hosted the
2016 Teddy Bear’s Picnic for children aged 0-5 years. Thankyou to all the parents and
carers who brought their children to the morning, without your efforts it would not be
viable for the CRC to host events such as this.
All who attended enjoyed a morning of fun including face painting, rhymes, music,
stories, a picnic lunch and of course lots of cuddly colourful teddy bears!

Recipe
Hot Cross Muffins
Ingredients

135g dried cranberries

1 cup (150g) currants

2 1/2 cups (375g) self-raising flour

1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

2/3 cup (165ml) sunflower oil

1 cup (250ml) buttermilk

2 eggs

200g caster sugar, plus extra 2

tablespoons

80g icing sugar

1 teaspoon lemon juice
Method
1. Preheat oven to 200°C. Grease a 12-hole muffin tray and line with paper
cases.
2. Soak dried fruit in just enough boiling water to cover for 10 minutes.
Drain well, then pat dry with paper towel.
3. Sift the flour, soda and spices into a large bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk
together the oil, buttermilk, eggs and sugar until combined. Add to the dry
ingredients and stir to combine. Gently stir in the fruit. Divide the mixture
among muffin cases, then bake for 20-25 minutes until lightly browned
and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Cool completely on a
wire rack.
4. Meanwhile, place the extra 2 tablespoons sugar in a pan with 2 tablespoons water and simmer over low heat, stirring, until sugar dissolves.
Brush the glaze over the muffins.
5. Sift icing sugar into a bowl. Add lemon juice and just enough hot water
to make a thick, pipe-able icing. Use a piping bag or drizzle from a spoon
to draw a cross on each muffin, then serve.

Poetry
What is Easter?
It’s not about the eggs to hunt
It’s not about a bunny
It’s not about brand new
clothes
Or candy as sweet as honey
On this day, many years ago,
A man named Jesus Christ
Upon a cross for you and me
Gladly gave his life.
Not for sins that he had done
But that’s not the end of
Jesus Christ
They put him in a grave
But three days later, he rose
again
Our sin debt had finally been
paid.
So this Easter as you hunt for
eggs
Dressed up in brand new
clothes
Or crimes he must repay
Don’t think about the Easter
bunny
He did it all for you and me
Think about why Christ arose.
For our sins, he died that day.
