Message From The President
Happy June, Everyone!
Because of the lengthy time required to publish these newsletters, I’m required to write these
president’s letters about a month before they’re actually delivered. I’m gonna go out on a limb
and say, “Happy Summer,” perhaps presumptively because May weather hasn’t been quite the
show stopper we all hoped it would be, and it certainly didn’t feel like summer. It was kind of
gray and damp, and, well . . . good riddance. Let’s hope that June turns out to be everything
we want it to be.
So, if all went to plan, the community pool opened on Memorial Day weekend replete with
crisp new canopies, a freshly sanded pool surface, and a newly renovated ladies restroom.
This marks the second consecutive year that ClubCorp has made a meaningful contribution
toward improving Hamlet amenities. And . . . we have a new General Manager in place. Kris
Reinert is now running the golf club. We wish him the best of luck, and I look forward to
working with Kris to make even greater strides in the future.
Ya, so the wonderful folks at Verizon have gone on strike and they didn’t quite finish splicing
all the fiber optic connections before hitting the picket line. What does all this mean? God
only knows. We’ve had one delay after another, and we’re all disappointed by how long this
process has taken. We’ll have FIOS service eventually. Someday soon I hope. Keep your fingers
crossed or say a prayer.
I have not been altogether thrilled with the daily give-and-take communications between the
community and our management agent at Fairfield. Without getting into too much detail, the
tenor of the communications, both written and oral, were not in keeping with the friendly
tone the board wishes to project. Effective immediately, Virginia Manning will be taking over
as the Hamlet’s management relationship agent, replacing Suz Landi.
I look forward to seeing all of you at the open meeting at the end of this month. As the
community ages, it faces new challenges. I look forward to reporting to you and receiving
your input in our annual forum.
Have a great month.

National Flag Day is when Americans celebrate the meaning of their nation’s flag, honor the traditions associated with its
care, and educate those around them to its significance. The Flag of the United States is to be honored and carries with it both
history and tradition. On June 14, 1777 the Flag Resolution was signed, making the current stars and stripes the National
Flag of the United States of America. On May 30, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson called for the nation-wide observance
of Flag Day. In 1949, President Harry S. Truman signed congress’ decree, making June 14th of each year National Flag Day.

SOCIAL ACTIVITY
Isabella Kelter ([email protected]/630-0835)
“Only true friends will leave footprints in your heart.”
The Mother’s Day brunch was well attended. Many people
from outside the community attended as well as our own
Hamletonians. The food was good. Everyone was happy to
stay locally and celebrate with their families.
The Welcome Back buffet was great. Most of the snowbirds
have returned. It was like Old Home Week. As always, the
salad bar and dessert bar were favorites. The new general
manager of ClubCorp made an appearance. We are hoping
for some positive changes.
Several of the May events have not taken place yet, so I will
report on them next month.
The Children’s Luncheon will take place on Sunday, June
12th from 12-3. We are very excited to have an event geared
toward the kids in the development. If you haven’t done so
already, please drop off your check to Roseann Pommerehne
at 143 Windwatch Drive. Fun activities are planned including
a magic show, face painting, balloon animals and so much
more! We have lowered the price to encourage more people
to bring their children, grandchildren, and friends to make
it more of a fun-filled day!
The FALL PREVENTION PRESENTATION presented by the
Department of Health is on Monday, June 13th from 10-12
in the clubhouse. Falls are the leading cause of injury-related
deaths, hospitalizations and emergency room visits among
adults over 65. Falls are not accidents, but predictable and
avoidable. It is FREE OF CHARGE. The course came highly
recommended. Please e-mail [email protected] or
call 631 630-0835 if you would like to attend. Please leave a
message if there is no answer.
The Tiki hut is stocking up on tropical drinks and food for
our annual summer party on Saturday, June 25th! The DJ is
ready, willing, and able to play some awesome tunes so we
can dance the night away. Weather permitting, the cocktail
hour will be outside on the terrace and in the terrace room,
and the buffet and dancing will be in the ballroom. POP
bracelets for alcoholic beverages will be available for those
who want them but not mandatory. Drinks will also be sold
individually.
Vendors have been calling to assure their space at the Ladies
Luncheon. Be there or be square. This event is always a
favorite!
The comedians are booked for the comedy night in
September.
Water Zumba will begin shortly. Watch for e-mails with the
date and time. Hopefully summer will treat us well so we
can start soon. This season, classes will be held on Sunday
mornings. Lisa is a wonderful instructor with lots of energy.
She stresses moving at your own pace.
Yoga is very relaxing on Tuesday nights.
Summer activities will be announced by e-mail as they are
planned.
Below is the tentative calendar for the rest of the year.

• “Father’s Day” is not a modern concept. It was first celebrated by a Babylonian youth named
Elmesu, who carved a Father’s Day card out of clay around 4,000 years ago. His special card was
to wish his father good health and long life.
• Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd (now known as “the mother of Father’s Day”), whose father was a single
parent and raised his six children, first proposed a national day to recognize fathers in the US.
She conceived the idea of celebrating Father’s Day while she was listening to a Mother’s Day
sermon in 1909. The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910.
• In the year 1916, US president Woodrow Wilson approved the idea of observing an annual Father’s
Day. And in the year 1924, President Calvin Coolidge made Father’s Day a national event.
• After a couple of decades, President Lyndon Johnson designated the third Sunday in June as
Father’s Day and issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers in the year 1966.
Then in the year 1972 President Richard Nixon signed the public law that made the Father’s Day
celebration permanent. Since then, this day is celebrated each year.
• Around 72% of Americans celebrate and acknowledge Father’s Day.
• Do you know Father’s Day acquired fourth position last year as the most popular card-sending
holiday, with an estimated $100 million sales figure? Nearly 95 million Father’s Day cards were
given last year in the United States.
• According to a survey, sons and daughters send 50% of the Father’s Day cards to their dads; 20%
of Father’s Day cards are purchased by wives for their husbands; and that leaves 30% percent of
the cards, which go to grandfathers, sons, brothers, uncles and “someone special.”

are so confident in our process we offer an unsurpassable
Guarantee:
summertime safety!
• Check weather reports for local UV index – the higher the number, the greater your
exposure to skin-harming UV rays. Take extra precautions when index is eight or higher.
• Cosmetic products containing sunscreen are effective. Use an SPF of at least 15 on sunexposed skin. Remember to reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours, even when cloudy.
Walking on the beach can be relaxing and help keep you in shape. But before
you take that stroll and remove those flip-flops/sneakers remember these
tips:
• Keep your flip-flops on when walking around pool area and bathrooms to avoid athlete’s
foot or other infections.
• Remember to apply sunscreen to the tops of your feet and your ankles.
• People with diabetes should avoid walking barefoot. You should always wear socks and
shoes to protect your feet, even at the beach.
SUMMER SOLSTICE
• The Summer Solstice marks the beginning of the summer season in the Northern Hemisphere. On this day, the North
Pole is tilted towards the Sun at the highest degree of angle.
• Places in the Northern Hemisphere experience the longest hours of sunlight throughout the year on this day. The
history of the Summer Solstice is rooted in both ancient mysticism and nature. This day takes place somewhere
around June 20th or 21st each year.
• On the Summer Solstice, the North Pole receives 24 hours of daylight, and the South Pole receives 24 hours of
darkness.
• Solstice comes from the Latin words for “Sun” and “to stop.”
• Many Native American tribes celebrated the Summer Solstice by holding “sun dances”.
• On the summer solstice, the Earth’s axis is tilted the most, up to 26°.

• Close the car windows. Most windshields protect against UV rays, but side and rear
windows do not block UVA rays. Be sure to apply sunscreen and wear long sleeves, even
while in the car.

World Oceans Day serves as a celebration of our oceans, which generate most of the oxygen that we breathe, feed us and
regulates the planet’s climate. The day also serves to promote the oceans’ contribution life and the need to protect it from
harmful pollution, overexploitation, destructive fishing and climate change. Unfortunately, as a result of human pollution
and exploitation, the world’s oceans are becoming increasingly delicate.
In 1992, the Government of Canada proposed World Oceans Day at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. By 2002, the Ocean
Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to conservation of the planet’s oceans, began to promote and coordinate the
event on a global scale. Finally, in December of 2008, the United Nations General Assembly officially proclaimed June 8th
as World Oceans Day. • The theme for World Oceans Day in 2016 is Healthy Ocean, Healthy Planet.
• It is estimated that 50-80% of all life forms on Earth is found under the oceans’ surfaces. Oceans consist of 99% of all
living space on the planet.
• If all of the Earth’s ice melted, the oceans would rise about 216.5ft. and flood all low-lying ground.
• The lowest point on the plant is located in Marianas Trench in the western Pacific. The point, known as Challenger Deep,
is 6.9 miles deep. (Mt. Everest is only 5.4 miles tall).
“We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, we are going back to whence we came.”

Travel tips for 3-day weekends
BRIAN’S
DOOR-TO-DOOR
The arrival of warm weather
signals the season of three-day
weekends and more people are using
that time to travel. Whether it's three
glorious days off due to a holiday,
summer office hours or simply cashing
in on precious PTO time, weekend
warriors are taking advantage.

DRY CLEANERS
Delivering Quality & Convenience
This weekend travel trend may be
attributed to more people "working to
live" rather than "living to work." In
fact, 68 percent of Americans would
rather embark on a bucket-list trip
than get a big promotion, according to
a Hampton by Hilton survey.
These trips don't have to break the
bank, especially when flying isn't
always essential for a memorable
adventure. Hopping in the car this
summer is a cost-effective, easy way to
jumpstart your vacation. According to
AAA's 2016 Your Driving Costs study,
gas prices in the U.S. are at a record
low. With that in mind, this summer is
the ideal season for road trips.
pick a destination you can access in
four hours or fewer. Following this
rule ensures you have as much time
as possible to enjoy your destination.
Plus, if you travel with kids, they'll be
much more mellow and you'll avoid
those "Are we there yet?" moments.
if you do. For long weekends, select
one main activity you want to do such as a tourist stop, museum visit or
day at the beach - and leave the rest of
the time open for casual exploration.
Spontaneity often inspires the best
adventures.
Select an
accommodating hotel
Stay on budget and eat
well
"You don't need a full week to enjoy a
vacation. Many of the best times I've
had with my family have happened
on three-day travel adventures," says
Kristen Hewitt, sports reporter and
blogger at www.MommyInSports.com.
Choose a hotel with a variety of
locations so you'll be close to the
action and attractions. With more than
2,100 properties globally, Hampton by
Hilton is ideal for weekend wanderers.
This weekend mindset has inspired
a new travel segment known as the
Seekender. Seekenders are bold
adventurers who take advantage of
the weekend to pursue their passions.
Sound like you? Check out Hewitt's
favorite travel tips to get the most out
of every moment of your next threeday trip:
Resist the temptation to over-pack by
packing for versatility. Don't forget to
add a few accessories that transform
outfits quickly, such as statement
jewelry and summer hats. A simple
packing trick to get the most out
of the space in your carry-on is to
roll clothing. You'll fit more in and
eliminate wrinkles!
Target the four-hour
mark
Free up the itinerary
You don't want to spend two days of
your three-day vacation traveling, so
26 hamlet wind watch | june 2016
Pack right, pack light
It's tempting to pack as much as
possible into three days, but you'll end
up stressed and exhausted by the end
If you can cut down on your food
bill, your entire trip will be more
affordable. Look for a hotel that offers
free breakfast so you can start your
day with a full belly. For example,
Hampton by Hilton guests enjoy hot
breakfast and freshly brewed hazelnut
coffee at no extra cost. When out
and about, never underestimate the
appeal of a picnic in a park - a more
affordable alternative to restaurant
dining.
Indulge your wanderlust and begin
planning your next three-day
weekend trip. For inspiration, follow
Hewitt's Seekender adventures on
HamptonSeekender.com and join
the conversation on social media at
#WeGoTogether.
