(L-R) Area Co-ordinator, Helen Peverley, joins Cheryl Jones from the Business Investment Team and Chair of the West Area Committee, Councillor Peter Gibson, to
help promote the West Shopping Support Project
Shopping for ideas
LOCAL BUSINESSES are being
asked to help lead the next
phase of revitalising Pallion
Shopping Centre.
To build upon the environmental
improvements to St Luke’s Terrace, the
West Area Committee is now looking at
ways of supporting shops to increase trade
and attract more, regular customers into
the area.
The West Shopping Support Project will
ask every shop in the area for their views,
opinions and suggestions on the kind of
practical help and support they would like
to see provided to achieve this.
This might include anything from helping to
set up a local traders’ association or local loyalty
card, to organising promotional events or
combined marketing campaigns to encourage
more people to visit St Luke’s Terrace.
A team from the West Area Committee
and the City Council’s Business Investment
Team will visit every shop in the area to
explain the aims of the project, describe
the practical help and advice available, and
ask every business if and how they would
like to become involved in continuing to
improve the shopping centre.
Chair of the West Area Committee, Councillor
Peter Gibson said: “We want to ask local
shops what kind of help and support they
would need to attract more customers,
and then work together to see what we
can provide.
“The shopping centre has a vital part to
play in any community, the success of local
shops helps boost the local economy and
creates more local jobs and investment
opportunities.
“A lot has already been achieved in terms of
environmental improvements and we hope
this next phase of business improvements
will help re-establish St Luke’s Terrace as
local people’s main shopping destination.”
Harry Collinson, from Sunderland City Centre
Traders’ Association added: “Businesses
working together with the community is
the best way to achieve success.
City Centre parking boost
Drivers using Sunderland City Council car parks in the run up to Christmas get free
parking after 3pm on Thursdays and Fridays and all day on Saturdays and Sundays.
The scheme has been developed by the City Council and the City Centre Traders
Association, to encourage more people to use city centre shops, bars, restaurants
and attractions to support local businesses.
There are nearly 2,000 spaces in council car parks and on-street parking sites across
Sunderland city centre.
The scheme began on Thursday 14 November and runs until Friday 3 January.
We need to encourage more people to visit
their local shops to see what they have to
offer, and then hopefully become more
regular customers.
“The growth of small business is vital, money
spent locally helps locally by creating jobs
and a better community for us all to live in
with more choice and more facilities.”

Community News - November 2013 - Sunderland West I 01
FOND FAREWELL
Grindon is bidding a fond farewell to Helen Stephenson who has spent the
last ten years working to help improve people’s lives.
Based at Grindon United Reformed
Church as a Church Related Community
Worker, Helen has worked closely with other
denominational local churches, community
groups and ward councillors to help local
families.
Helen said: “When I started here over a
decade ago, my remit was to engage the
church more into the local community
and I hope I have helped to achieve this.
“From being in such a bad state of repair
from vandalism that people thought the
church was derelict, we have re-estabished
the buildings as a resource for the
community to use.
“We built closer links with local youth
groups and community projects, listened
New page for
library services
Story-telling sessions in a local
supermarket and new Books at
Home service are among the
plans for Sunderland’s new library
service launched last month.
People will also be able to borrow
books from a number of community
book collection points under
plans to expand library services
to what families told us was needed in
the area and worked together to try and
provide it.”
That partnership approach started
a Thursday night youth club as a pilot
project two years ago, which now attracts 50 young people every week. It
also established the Grindon Family Zone,
and the community garden hidden to the
rear of the building which has raised beds
growing vegetables, an orchard and wildlife
area with a lawn and patio available for the
whole community to enjoy.
Helen said: “I’d like to think that the help
and support we’ve provided to local families
has improved life in the community and
I’m sure that will continue.
“My work was never about getting people
into church, but getting the church out
to local people.”
Ward councillor for Sandhill, Councillor
Debra Waller said: “People like Helen
make a massive difference to life in our
community, and I’d like to thank her for all
her hard work over the years.”
into communities at the same
time as reducing the number of
static libraries from 20 to 11.
The new service centres around
extending library services into
schools, children’s centres,
community centres and other
community venues, alongside a
smaller number of more traditional
library settings.

in January.
Sessions in the West run at a number of venues,
including Thorney Close Action and Enterprise Centre,
Highfield Community Primary School, Pennywell Early
Years Centre and New Silksworth Infant School.
Don’t forget about the toy libraries too, why buy when

Community led improvements
Work is almost complete to remove the
trees and undergrowth on land adjoining

attracting fly-tipping and anti-social
behaviour.
ownership of the land previously
between their back garden fence and
the perimeter fence of cemetery.
Boundary fences built between each
property and extending down to the
cemetery have not only secured the
whole site, but also given each property
the option of extending their back gardens
into this stretch of land if they choose to.
Residents on Hadleigh Road were
concerned about problems to the back
of their properties, a stretch of 46
owner-occupier, social housing and
rented homes, and asked their ward
councillors to help.
Ward councillor and Portfolio Holder
for Responsive Local Services and
Customer Care, Councillor Cecilia
Gofton said: “There have been issues
about this stretch of land for a number
of years, and now hopefully working
with people living in Hadleigh Road
we can resolve them.
Following visits to people’s homes by
Pallion ward councillors and the City
Council’s Responsive Local Services
team, solutions to these problems were
agreed upon.
Funding from the West Area Committee
allowed environmental improvements
to be made along the corridor of land
immediately bordering the cemetery,
while discussions were held with residents
including Home Housing about what they
would like to see happen to that land.
(l-r) Ward councillors Amy Wilson and Cecilia Gofton with

Area Responsive Local Services Team
involved in this process, and we look
forward to working with the residents to
provide them with continuing help and
support.”
“We visited people, listened to what
they were telling us about problems
on the land between the back of their
homes and the cemetery, and their
suggestions on how we could work
together to do something about them.
It was agreed that people living in Hadleigh
Road should have the option of taking

A STOCKPILE of 15,000 tonnes of salt was
laid down for Sunderland City Council’s
winter maintenance programme.
The council has 16 gritters as part of
its winter service which is provided
from Trimdon Street, Sunderland, and
Market Place, Houghton.
During periods of severe winter weather
the council runs a 24-hour treatment
programme for main commuter routes,
such as the A690 and A1231 and staff
are also diverted to snow and ice
clearing duties.
Salt stocks at Trimdon Street are used
in Sunderland and parts of the Washington
area. The depot at Market Place,
Houghton, serves as a base for operations
in the Coalfield area and the remainder
of Washington.

Big changes to benefits
Universal Credit are you ready?
Recipe for success
More than £70,000 from the
West Area Committee is
funding a number of community
based initiatives to improve
local people’s job prospects.
Universal Credit is the next
major benefit change to be
introduced. It will be
introduced in stages across
the country until 2017.
The latest development is ‘Work Clubs’ which
are based at voluntary sector groups to
provide people of all ages looking for
work, with the kind of practical help and
advice they need to find it. The community
based Work Clubs can provide a more
individual, tailored approach to meeting
people’s needs than the Job Centre.
It is a means tested benefit which will
replace Income based Jobseeker’s
Allowance, Income based Employment
and Support Allowance, Income Support,
Housing Benefit, Working Tax Credit and
Child Tax Credit for people of working age.
The community led Work Clubs can also
help the Job Centre, by identifying what
kind of training or help people are asking
for so they can target future resources to
meet demand.
It is a single monthly payment which will
be paid directly into your bank account.
It is expected to be introduced in
Sunderland no earlier than March 2014
and to start with it will only affect newly
unemployed single people. It will then
be implemented in stages after that
for both new claimants and for those
already getting the above benefits.
Make sure you are ready:
Get a bank account. Universal Credit will be paid directly into your bank account, if you don’t have one already, you need to sign up to receive electronic payments with a bank, building society or credit union.
Keep checking www.sunderland.gov.uk/
benefitchanges which will be updated
with more details when they are available.
Stay informed, plan ahead
The Work Club based at Pallion Action
Group has used this individual, tailored
approach to help 30 year old Greg Butler
not only to achieve his ambition but also
to set up his own business.
After working in sales and customer service
and losing his job with BT last year, Greg
was struggling to find work and became a
regular visitor to the Work Club.
Talking to the team he mentioned how
the self-taught culinary talents he had
developed as a teenager, had taken him
to the quarter finals of BBC Master Chef
in 2010.
The Bridges…
your community bank
Bringing together a number of
existing credit unions, including
Wearside First, the Bridges Community
bank was formed in 2012. It currently has
over 9,000 adult members and more than
1,400 child savers and is the largest credit
union in the North East and Cumbria.
Offering savings accounts and affordable
loans, it is guaranteed by the Financial
Services compensation scheme.

(l-r) Greg Butler with members of one of the West
Area Job Clubs.
With the encouragement and support of the
Work Club, and the free legal and financial
advice provided by voluntary sector partners
at FISCUS and Hendon based Sustainable
Enterprise Strategies, Greg has set up his
own corporate catering business.
Greg said: “I was a dad at 19 and
although I enjoyed cooking and had a
talent for it, l always had other priorities
and never had either the thought or the
opportunity of pursuing it as a career.
“The Work Club encouraged me to consider
it, and then helped me get the food hygiene
and first aid certificates I needed to take
it further. With free advice on setting
up a business plan and preparing a loan
application, I’m now using my skills to set
up my own business.

possible”
