Dear Friends in Christ,
On Friday, Pope Francis released an Apostolic
Exhortation (titled Amoris Laetitia or “The Joy
of Love”), on the subject of love within the
family. The document is available in English
at
http://w2.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/
apost_exhortations/documents/papafrancesco_esortazione-ap_20160319_amoris-laetitia.html.
If that is too long to type, go to http://w2.vatican.va/
content/vatican/en.html, and a pop-up window will make
it very easy to find (at least for the time being). FYI, the
table of contents is in the back, starting at page 257. As of
writing this letter, I have not yet been able to read it all
before this bulletin had to go to print.
Chances are, most of the mainstream media that will
be reporting on this have not read it all either. Some
people will be elated by what the media says the Pope
says and some will be dismayed. Please do not pay too
much heed to what you may hear from the media, family
members and friends. Past experience shows that they are
often wrong when interpreting Church documents, based
on a selective and distorted reading. I encourage you to
read it for yourself (they really are very short pages of
maybe 150 words each).
One thing to note is that such documents
(“Apostolic Exhortations” following a meeting of the Synod
of Bishops, such as the two recently held to consider the
situation of the family) do not have the weight of papal
infallibility. They are generally not doctrinal documents,
but pastoral documents (that is, they are not about what
we teach, but more on how we teach it and how we live
those teachings in contemporary society). What I have
read of the document clearly upholds what the Church has
always taught about the nature and purposes of marriage
(see my series of bulletin letters from last August and
September), while presenting some moving reflections on
the meaning and effect of familial love. Once I have
managed to read and understand Amoris Laetitia, I will
write more about it, including whatever gets made
controversial by the (often misguided) media. To conclude,
I propose the prayer with which Francis concludes his
letter:
Prayer to the Holy Family
Jesus, Mary and Joseph,
in you we contemplate
the splendour of true love;
to you we turn with trust.
Holy Family of Nazareth,
grant that our families too
may be places of communion and prayer,
authentic schools of the Gospel
and small domestic churches.
Holy Family of Nazareth,
may families never again experience
violence, rejection and division;
may all who have been hurt or scandalized
find ready comfort and healing.
Holy Family of Nazareth,
make us once more mindful
of the sacredness and inviolability of the family,
and its beauty in God’s plan.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph,
graciously hear our prayer. Amen.
Yours in Christ Jesus,
Fr. Marco

Today's Gospel reading reminds us that Scripture and the
Eucharist are given to us so that our acts of bearing
witness to Christ might be strengthened. (Just like love is
greatly strengthened between families who consistently
congregate, eat meals together and recall family
memories.)
In our program, the consistent weekly attendance of
students is but a small indication of their discipleship! That
is why we depend on parents to regularly gather at home
with their children, praying together, talking about their
faith, as well as frequenting the sacraments of
Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist. Jesus' attentiveness to
food and mealtimes raises the possibility that our meal
gatherings can be sacred times!
It has been statistically proven that families who spend a
lot of time together, have a stronger bond.
This Sunday, I hope you can join the Level 3 class and their
families as they sponsor the Sunday 11:15 Mass. Also, the
attendance of students in Levels 3 to 5 is very crucial this
Sunday and Monday as archdiocese assessments are being
conducted.

WORLDWIDE MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER: Think of how
tired, discouraged and frustrated the apostles must have
been in the Gospel reading today. Then Jesus shows up
and tells them to try one more time. Because they were
willing and obedient, Jesus blessed them abundantly. It
works the same way in our own lives today; if we trust in
Jesus and do what He tells us to do we will receive His
abundant blessings!
Allow the grace of God to
strengthen, renew and rekindle your marriage
relationship. The next Worldwide Marriage Encounter
Weekend is November 11-13, 2016, in Gaithersburg, MD.
