In the case of engraving and lithography, and particularly
for Maribel Mas work, reading key probably lies in the
passion for the use of different printing processes, the
selection of paper and the good combination with each
ink: to serve the artist and his creation in the best way.
Whether stone lithography on aluminum plates, woodcut,
intaglio: it is needed a time to find the balance between
the work of the artist and the selected way of expression.
In addition, etching and lithography, offer a very special
relationship with the moment of creation. Kant sees
nothing higher than the beauty of nature and the artist
ultimate try is to approach the nature... For Bergson, the need for “Elan Vital” explains the evolution and
development of living entities, and pushing the thinking
to arts, this approach can then lead to a certain
“momentum of arts”, necessary for creativity.
In the case of printing processes, in a way similarly
to photography, there is this unique moment where
the artist discover the work. In the case of painting or
sculpture, the passage of the blank canvas, or the stone
block is a slow transition, with the particular kinetic of
each artist, who decides alone the completion. Bonnard,
true perfectionist, could not avoid to modify his paintings,
even after they were bought or exhibited in a museum...
The engraving or lithography appears in a certain
moment of “revelation.” This “thaumaturgic’ side gives
these techniques a special dimension, somewhere
between hard work and magic. It must be the
combination of artistic design (poiesis), with the craft
project and with expert practice (praxis). The work
appears to the artist, and can not be changed
anymore, except for the “enhancement”, reinforcing the
“uniqueness” of the work. The piece of art appears in the
same way in the eyes of the art lover, who discovers the
work completed.
The workshop of Maribel Mas in Barcelona since
2005, “Taller Esquina”, weaves constantly new links,
discovering areas to explore. Thus, the workshop
invests in education through partnerships in Leipzig
with printmaker workshops and projects in Barcelona
with the Picasso Museum, the Museu Moli Paperer
Capellades, UB Barcelona University, Llotja and Massana
Art Schools.
Finally, beyond the aesthetic relationship with the
guest artists of the workshop, Taller Esquina has
developed technical partnerships, including the japanese
papermakers of Ganpi, Mitsumata Kouzo developed
in their family workshops in Aoya, and in the project
Kanyain with Tatsuya Mitani, through courses and
information on paper and japanese woodcut. For 10
years, this collaboration between these two cultures can
share another approach to the paper, its production
techniques, and its specificities.

The gesture distinguish Maribel Mas. Sometimes a red
soft trace, a bloods echo. Decision and impetus other
times. Here are reunited beauty and pain. Maribel Mas is
a traditional lithography master, who distillates from the
stones a ineffable subtleness.
Alex Mitrani, art critic and curator, Barcelona
The lithographic traces that Maribel Mas left on the paper
are restrained and subdued, as if the artist purposefully
prevents the figure to escape from the crevasses of the
paper and the lithographic plate.
泡泡, Pao Pao, Yonghe Art Exhibition Hall, Beijing
The work of Maribel Mas repeatedly investigates the
fascination and significance of traditional printmaking
techniques in the digital age. A meticulous illustrator and
a graphic artist with a penchant for experimentation, her
specialty and passion are lines. These, to her, are not
contours but have a quality all of their own.
Maribel Mas is obviously well aware of the creative
energy of repetition, a cardinal feature of the conceptual
avant-garde. The artist interrupts the regularity of her
serial structure, because, as she says, “random is an
inestimable source of possibilities”.
