How many of us have actually seen people who have
officially been declared saints? When Pope John Paul II
came to American in 1979, I was privileged to be at Shea
Stadium where he made an appearance. I am still in the
process of reading his biography by George
Weigel, Witness to Hope. Pope John Paul II was a learned
and zealous contributor to many of the documents of
Vatican II when he was a bishop. Once he became Pope
he wrote many letters and visited many countries. His gift
of intelligence combined with his strong faith enabled him
to see the Church, the world, and all the people in the world
through the eyes of faith. When Communist governments
fell, his concern was that the new found freedom would be
used as a means to a just and moral society, not freedom
that focused on limited, individual whims and desires. How
blessed we have been to have seen him canonized a saint
in our lifetime. Surely he is an inspiration to all of us who
seek to live our faith as the people of God, the Church, the
Body of Christ in the world. The stained glass window on
the east side of the lobby in the main entrance in our
church building depicts John Paul II.
Today we celebrate All Saints Day, a day when we
remember those who have been Catholic believers before
us and are now role models and intercessors in God’s
presence for us. The saint most of us pray to everyday is
Mary, the mother of Jesus. As He was dying on the cross,
John 19:26-27 tells us, “When Jesus then saw His mother,
and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said
to His mother, ‘Woman, behold, your son!’ Then He said to
the disciple, ‘Behold, your mother!’ From that hour the
disciple took her into his own household.” We express our
faith in Mary’s Motherhood for us every time we say a Hail
Mary or pray the rosary. Through the mysteries of the
rosary we turn our attention to Mary’s faith and the saving
events in the life of Jesus that took away everything that
separates us from God and one another. The Blessed
Virgin Mary, as Jesus, is an exemplar of faith and trust in
God at all times, the good and the bad, the joyful and the
sorrowful, the difficult and the easy. From having to reveal
to Joseph and her family that she was pregnant through the
power of the Holy Spirit, to seeing her newborn child
pursued by Herod’s murderous soldiers, to being present at
Jesus’ crucifixion, we see her complete trust in God and
His way. Her response to the angel Gabriel at the
Annunciation, Luke 1:38: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the
Lord. May it be done to me according to your word,” is a
preview to the words of Jesus in the Garden just before He
is arrested (Matthew 26:39): “He advanced a little and fell
prostrate in prayer, saying, ‘My Father, if it is possible, let
this cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you will.’”
You and I are called to be saints. We will probably not
be officially canonized by the Church, but we are invited to
be one with all God’s people in heaven. Everyday we
repeat the words of Jesus and Mary as we pray the Our
Father and say, “thy will be done on earth as it is in
heaven.” That prayer is answered by us who pray it. We do
the will of God every time our thoughts, words, and actions
give life to ourselves and others. Today’s Gospel is the
beginning of the Sermon on the Mount in chapters 5-7
in Matthew’ Gospel, where Jesus gives us the eight
Beatitudes. The Jewish people formulated 613 laws
after Moses received the Ten Commandments. From
that point on in the books of Exodus, Leviticus,
Numbers, and Deuteronomy we see these laws
stated. These laws covered many different situations
the Jewish people of that time faced. But as we know
as human beings, we never have every situation
covered. The unexpected happens and in those cases
where laws or rules are not promulgated or come to
mind, we have the treasure of the Beatitudes and the
Sermon on the Mount. What Jesus is sharing with us
is the vision of faith that comes from spending time in
prayer, reading the Bible and other spiritual books, and
being fed by Word and Sacrament at Mass.
Blessed are the poor in spirit. We are all born
needing love. Our presence makes the spirit of our
parents rich as they lovingly give and sacrifice of
themselves for us. We enrich ourselves and others
when our true purpose is to love without counting the
cost and to forgive no matter how great the hurt.
Blessed are they who mourn. We mourn not only
the death of those we love, but the evil that causes
pain and suffering to us, our loved ones, and all
people. This mourning leads to action to overcome evil.
Blessed are the meek. To be meek is not to be a
pushover or a wallflower, but to love and do good
simply to make the lives of others better. This attitude
is far more satisfying than looking for recognition and
gratitude.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for
righteousness. The struggle against injustice and evil
can seem overwhelming at times. But our efforts are
never in vain. All we have to do is keep the attitude of
Jesus on the cross in mind.
Blessed are the merciful, they will be shown
mercy. “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those
who trespass against us.” God’s mercy is pure,
healing, and renews both the forgiver and the forgiven.
Blessed are the pure of heart. That means we always
do the right thing for the right reason.
Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called
children of God. This is not peace at any cost or
compromise, but peace based on concern for God’s
truth and love.
Blessed are those persecuted for holiness’
sake. How courageous and life giving it is to stand up
for who we are as God’s children in the face of ridicule,
misunderstanding, dismissal, and rejection.
It is God’s love and presence that leads, sustains,
and guides us all on the road to sainthood.

Congratulations to our
2015 St. Agnes Medal Recipients:
Carol and Ron Tavis!
There are those parishioners who go out of their way in serving God and others in their
parishes and who do it year after year. That is certainly the case with Ron and Carol
Tavis, the 2015 St. Agnes Medal recipients from our parish. Each year, pastors from the
133 parishes in our diocese are asked to nominate lay people who unselfishly donate
their time and talent. Bishop William Murphy created the award in 2007, stating that:
“Honorees are lay people whose love of the Church has been shown through the
devotion to the Holy Father, to our diocese and to their parish. They are the unsung
heroes in our midst who build up our parish communities by extraordinary service in parish ministry, parish
administration or some significant volunteer role.”
Ron and Carol have played an active role in our parish in several capacities, perhaps most notably as
coordinators of our Pre-Cana Ministry for the past 17 years. Carol is also a member and past president of Holy
Mother Mary Columbiettes and Ron is an active member of the Knights of Columbus. Carol also served as a
catechist in our Religious Formation program for 17 years and both she and Ron have served as Eucharistic
Ministers.
. . . .also receiving awards. . .
Eight other St. Patrick parishioners also recently received Catechetical Service
Awards for their work in religious formation. Receiving the John R. McGann Award
were: Grace Kurkowski (for 40 years of service), and Virginia Schmidt and Maria
Lee (for 35 years of service). Receiving the Pope Pius X Award for ten years of
service were: Virginia Riccardi, Marie McLaughlin, Patricia Galietta, Jennifer
Crimmins and Diane Sarrocco. (Pictured at right is Grace Kurkowski receiving her
award.)
We are a People of Prayer
Please continue to say the following prayers each day
as we seek God’s guidance, strength and courage
Gracious God, we are your people embraced by your love. We thank you for your presence with us throughout all
time. Create us anew. Liberate us from that which keeps us from you. Enable us to recreate our world and restore
justice. Heal us from every form of sin and violence. Transform us to live your Word more profoundly. Reconcile us
so enemies become friends. Awaken us to the sacred; nurture our relationships; enliven our parishes; reunite our
families. Fill us with joy to celebrate the fullness of life. Empower us to be a community of love growing in your
likeness. Amen.
Thank you Father for the gift of life. Thank you for the gift of your Son, Jesus. May my gratitude inspire and sustain
me in doing everything I can to respect the lives of all people and to do all in my power to end abortion and
everything else that harms, abuses, or threatens human life. Give me the courage and strength to live in your image
each day. Amen.
Lord, the plight of our brothers and sisters is deep and the suffering of
Christians is severe and frightening. Therefore, we ask you Lord to spare
their lives to grant them patience and courage to continue their witness of
Christian values with trust and hope. Lord, peace is the foundation of life;
Grant us the peace and stability that will enable us to live with each other
without fear and anxiety, and with dignity and joy. Glory be to you forever.
The symbol to the right (the Arabic letter “N” for Nazarene) is being

There will be a Virtus Class offered Monday, November 9th in the Parish Center (the former Convent). The
class will begin at 7 PM and last approximately two hours. Please go to Virtus.org to register. Please create a

questions.
For the past seven years I have had the opportunity to help train more than 1,000 adults, in the Virtus
program. Evidence suggests that the Awareness Program, nationwide, has helped reduce the number of
incidents with regard to child abuse and molestation. Thank you for participating in this valuable cause. Many
parents who attend this feel it is timely and pertinent to those who volunteer to work with children and young
adults.

Saints and Martyrs:
"St.Thomas More and St. John Fisher, (are) martyrs who
laid down their lives rather than violate their consciences
or their sacred principles. Their courageous witness of
faith continues to stir the minds and hearts of people
yearning for authentic freedom, and specifically, for
religious freedom." Archbishop William Lori homily,
6/22/12
"We surely are not facing (in America) the dire brutality
that confronted St. John Fisher. But our Church and her
institutions do find themselves today in perilous waters."
The total number of Christians martyred in the early
church is unknown. It is known that persecution occurred
through stoning, crucifixion, burning at the stake or other
forms of torture. The period before Constantine (3rd
century) was the "Age of the Martyrs.” (religionfacts.com/
persecution; wikipedia.org)
Today we are seeing another "Age of the Martyrs" as tens
of thousands of Christians are violently killed every year.
Saints and Martyrs Today:
Religious persecution of Christians is rampant worldwide
where followers of Jesus are the targets of religious
cleansing. Pope Francis has repeatedly decried the
persecution and begged the world for help, but it has had
little impact. "Western leaders ... will be remembered for
their near silence as this human rights tragedy unfolds",
said author Kirsten Powers. (usatoday.com, 4/21/15)

LifeNet is a program offered by St. Patrick
Parish in Smithtown which was established to assist
and support those women and their families
experiencing an unplanned pregnancy.
LifeNet seeks to reveal that there are alternatives
to abortion, that women and families do not have to
face these alternatives alone, and that the
volunteers/helpers of LifeNet stand ready to help
them bring life to its term.
LifeNet’s trained volunteers/helpers reach out to
those in an unplanned or crisis pregnancy by
offering a safe, non-judgmental atmosphere in which
needs may be shared and support offered through
the nine months and beyond.

Vocation Awareness Week November 1st—7th
National Vocation Awareness Week (NVAW) is an annual week-long celebration of the Catholic
Church in the United States dedicated to promote vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and consecrated life through prayer and education, and to renew our prayers and support for those who
are considering one of these particular vocations.
We ask you to pray for these three soon-to-be ordained Deacons (on November 7th)
who will continue their spiritual journey and become Priests this coming June for the Diocese.
Please Pray for the increase in vocations!
For more information:
http://www.longislandpriest.com/
or
Contact Fr. Joe Fitzgerald at the Vocation Office

pray especially for the following priests from our diocese:
November 1st—Our Holy Father
November 2nd—All Deceased Priests
November 3rd—Rev. Thomas Maloney & Msgr Jeffrey Madley
November 4th—Rev. Vincent Richie SJ & Rev. Michael Duffy

November 6th—Rev. Marcellus Gorieku & Rev. Anselm Okeke
November 7th—Rev. Charles Ugwu & Msgr. Paul Rahilly
“To become a priest or a religious is not primarily our choice; it is our answer to a calling, a calling of love.”
- Pope Francis
Reflections on the Sunday Scriptures
November 8, 2015
Thirty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Readings: 1 Kings 17: 10-16; Hebrews 9: 24-28;
Mark 12: 38-44
Attention Level 2 Students—For your
convenience, copies of the cards on which you
write your gospel reflections will be included in the
Sunday bulletin. Feel free to use the form below
and to make copies. Your reflection may be
dropped into the collection basket as your gift to
our parish. (Please provide your first and last
name. Only first names will be used in the bulletin.)
In the course of his teaching Jesus said to the crowds,
"Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long
robes and accept greetings in the marketplaces, seats
of honor in synagogues, and places of honor at
banquets. They devour the houses of widows and, as
a pretext recite lengthy prayers. They will receive a
very severe condemnation." He sat down opposite the
treasury and observed how the crowd put money into
the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A
poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth
a few cents. Calling his disciples to himself, he said to
them, "Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more
than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they
have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she,
from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her
whole livelihood."
Focus Questions:
1.Share the story of someone whose trust in God
made all the difference in his/her life. What impact has
that person’s life had on you?
2. Lengthy prayers did not impress Jesus. Talk about
your prayer life. How do you try to keep it meaningful?
3. Describe a time in your life when you believed that
God was calling you to give from your want, not from
your excess.
Children and Family Reflections:
Talk about a special gift that you received. What
made it so special?
Sacred Heart
Prayer Group
The Sacred Heart Prayer group is a charismatic prayer
group that meets every Tuesday evening at 7:15 PM in
the Small Meeting Room of the Parish Center (old
convent). We are looking for new members, young and
old……All would be welcomed. We would especially like
to reach out to anyone who might like to join our music
ministry. If you play the guitar or sing, we would love for
you to join us! Please call Barbara Hall at 631-366-0252
with any questions.
Pilgrim Virgin Statue Visits
You are invited to arrange a visit of the
Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Our Lady of
Fatima in your home through our
Legion of Mary. Visits are for one
week, beginning on a Monday. The
purpose of the visitation is to aid
families in responding to the requests
made by the Blessed Mary during her
apparitions at Fatima. The essence of
her requests is threefold: Return to
God; Make reparation for sins; Pray
the Rosary for Peace. For information,
please call 631-234-2858.
Words of Wisdom from our Level 2 Students
Second grade students from our Religious Formation Program and our school are asked to read the “Children and
Family Reflection” column in the bulletin and write down their thoughts on cards provided for them. They then drop
the cards in the collection basket on Sunday as their contribution to our parish. Below are a few reflections on our
gospel reading by our second graders.
Gospel Reading: Mark 10: 46-52

On a hillside near the lake of Galilee, Jesus’s
disciples listened to his gentle and urgent voice;
as gentle as the landscape of Galilee itself,
as urgent as a call to choose between life and death,
between truth and falsehood. The Lord spoke words
of life that would echo for ever in the hearts of his
followers.

Why do so many expectant mothers choose St. Catherine?
Perhaps it’s our extraordinary reputation for compassionate
maternity care. Or advanced features like our Level II Neonatal
ICU, nursery and comfortable, private birthing suites. Or,
thoughtful innovations like our new, private postpartum unit. In
this peaceful setting, experienced nurses help you recover from
delivery in a warm, pampered and homelike atmosphere. After
all, as a new mom, you need a little babying, too.
