Student Art Gallery
Buffalo Grove High School is excited to announce that we will be opening an Art Gallery
at the start of the 2015-2016 school year. Art teachers Michelle Price and Jordie Field
received a $10,000 grant this past January to be used toward the construction of a
student-run art gallery. This Art Gallery opportunity for our students mirrors real life
experiences they would have in the art world. It offers true project based learning in
that our gallery will be a student led, teacher facilitated space. We believe that this
gallery allows students to move beyond producing art to constructing new knowledge
as they develop the skills to effectively display and discuss art. Students will learn
to design exhibitions, research and critique exhibitions, engage an audience in
discussions about art, and collaborate with others as they do these things. They will
also have unique opportunities to plan a gallery calendar and experience the work that
it entails. Additionally they will have opportunities to work across the curriculum with
students in courses such as marketing, fashion design, geometry and construction,
entrepreneurship, creative writing, and journalism as they sustain and promote the
gallery and its events.
Part of our excitement generates from the potential opportunities for our students.
Our desire is for our student curators to engage with the community through shows
featuring BGHS alumni artists and artists from the local community. This would offer
the opportunity for students to make connections with fine artists, photojournalists, and
commercial photographers. We hope to serve our school and community by supporting
interdisciplinary endeavors such as our forums on the Harlem Renaissance and the
Holocaust. To enrich their learning experiences, we welcome adult mentors, whether
teachers, alumni or community members, who will help prepare our students for real
world experiences such as how to curate an exhibit. We look forward to student art
shows that will showcase the tremendous talents of our students.
The BGHS Art Gallery will be housed in our Theater Foyer. The gallery will be open
throughout the day and also made available to the public at many of our Fine Arts
evening events. Students in the Art Department will act as curators at evening events,
able to showcase the gallery to the public, answer questions, and encourage feedback
from guests. We expect our gallery to offer a plethora of ways to engage students and
our community. We hope that people will make
time to stop in and see the new BGHS Art Gallery
next fall when we kick off a new school year.
We are extremely excited about creating an art
gallery space at Buffalo Grove High School.
Our students can hardly wait to get started, and
we feel the same way. This Art Gallery will be a
significant part of our Fine Arts area and offers
great ways to enliven our building with all kinds of
art experiences for students. Whether we exhibit

we believe this space provides a unique place to
increase appreciation for the visual arts.
Dear Bison Family,
I am very excited to announce that all Buffalo Grove High School students will have
District-issued iPads for the upcoming 2015-2016 school year!!
This means that we will have one-to-one technology that allows us to continue to
deliver relevant, innovative curriculum to all of our students from 9th to 12th grade. I am
honored to be working in a district that is willing to make the commitment to invest
in our school by investing in devices for all students. While sound teaching and
learning is the core of student achievement, I believe that providing our students
access to current technology tools is one of the best ways to prepare them for
their future. I have seen first-hand the transformational way that this technology
is changing and improving student learning, engagement, and growth.
The one-to-one implementation follows six years of innovation on the part of
hundreds of staff members across High School District 214, who empowered
a teacher-led process to bring iPads into our
classrooms, developing new instructional materials,
and identifying ways to transform learning. Elk
Grove High School will also implement one-to-one
technology for the 2015-2016 school year, and
by August 2016 all District 214 students will have
District-issued iPads.
For our teachers, ongoing professional development opportunities have been
offered to support thoughtful and innovative approaches to integration of
technology into each subject area. Teachers will use a wide variety of platforms
and applications for assignments and for communication with students and
parents, including Schoology, iTunes U, iBooks, Google Classroom, blogs, and
Google Sites. Likewise, students will be able to use a range of iPad apps and web
tools to create, conduct research, and complete assignments.
1:1 iPad implementation supports increased communication between teachers and students, and increased
student choice and autonomy over their own learning. Faculty are working with students so that they are thoughtful
and aware of their digital footprints and can make excellent choices in sharing content that will enhance their
digital reputation. We believe that having all
students equipped with an iPad will motivate
them, support autonomous engagement, and
strengthen the multidisciplinary learning that
defines BGHS.
Respectfully yours,
Jeff Wardle

Classes
Student S
We hope you and your students had a relaxing Spring Break. During that week, you should have received
a listing of the courses requested by your student for the 2015-2016 school year. If there is an error, please
contact the Student Services Office at 847-718-4022 or the counselor directly. If your student is an incoming
freshman and you have a question about placement, please contact Division Head Chris Marks at 847-7184131 about a math or science placement, Division Head Sandy Beguin at 847-718-4073 about an English
placement, or Division Head Rob Lindgren at 847-718-4088 about a world language or social science
placement. All changes must be made by April 15.
The master schedule will be completed in May. You will receive 2015-2016 schedules during this summer.
PLEASE NOTE THAT ONCE SCHOOL STARTS, STUDENTS WHO DROP A COURSE WILL BE PLACED
IN A CLOSED STUDY HALL. A student may have a maximum of one study hall per semester.
Counselors will be checking credits and reclassifying students not progressing towards graduation. Students
must earn the following minimum number of credits to be classified into the next grade:
Sophomores - 5 credits
Juniors - 10 credits
Seniors - 15 credits
If your child will be classified to a lower grade, the new grade will be indicated on the schedule your student
receives in August.
Summer School
Summer School registration began March 30 online. Students who failed a required course should plan to
make it up in summer school. All registration for summer school is done online, except for Driver Education,
which takes place in the CTE/PE office. Summer school will be held at Buffalo Grove and Rolling Meadows
High Schools this summer.
Student
Guidance
Students at all levels will be participating in the Developmental Core Counseling Program this spring. All
students will be learning how to use Naviance, our computerized college/career program. For freshmen,
counselors reviewed graduation requirements and worked with students to develop individualized academic
and career plans. At the sophomore level, students are exposed to career and personality inventories to
better prepare them for the post-secondary options. Juniors began learning about the college application
and admissions process.
Class of 2015
Information
May 8 is the date teachers must inform counselors if seniors are in danger of failing a class they need for
graduation. If your senior is in this situation, please encourage him or her to complete all work in order
to graduate on May 31. According to School Board policy, students must have completed all graduation
requirements in order to participate in the graduation ceremony.

The Class of 2015 Commencement will be held at 1:00pm on
Sunday, May 31, in the Buffalo Grove High School gymnasium.
To attend as a spectator, every
person in the gym must have a
ticket. Each graduating senior will
receive four tickets at rehearsal on
Friday morning, May 29. Tickets
will not be issued to students with
outstanding financial obligations to
the school until all fees have been
paid.
GradImagesTM will take a professional picture of the moment
each graduate is awarded his or her diploma. Approximately
one week later, families will receive a full-color proof in the
mail. Several photo packages are available, however there
is no obligation to purchase. GradImagesTM guarantees
complete satisfaction or a full refund with no questions
asked. GradTrak® by GradImagesTM is offering $5 off any
order over $25 if you register your email address prior to
graduation. Go to www.gradimages.com/index.cfm and

Where is parking? Is handicapped parking available?
Attendants will be available to assist with parking in the
school parking lot. The lot can be accessed from Arlington
Heights Road or Dundee Road. There will be no parking in
the front circle drive. Attendants will assist with handicapped
parking in the bus lanes close to the entrance to the
gymnasium. Overflow parking is available at Longfellow
School (located at 501 S. Arlington Heights Road).
When will the 2015 graduates get their cap and gown?
NEW THIS YEAR, caps, gowns, and tassels will be
distributed during all lunch periods on WEDNESDAY, MAY
20, in the cafeteria. Extra caps and gowns will be on hand
for students who did not fill out an order form in December.
A gown can be exchanged for a different size at graduation
rehearsal on Friday, May 29. Please contact Sindi Smith,
graduation sponsor, at [email protected] if there is any
problem with the fit of the gown.
Is special seating available for handicapped persons? How
many family members can sit with them? Chairs and first
row bleacher seats have been reserved for handicapped
individuals and one additional person. This seating is
located on the east side of the gymnasium (closest to the
Natatorium). A staff member inside the gym will be available
to assist with seating. Persons sitting in the handicapped
area will still need a ticket to enter the gym.
When is graduation rehearsal? Graduation rehearsal is
mandatory and will be held on Friday, May 29. Students
are expected to arrive at school by 7:15am so that rehearsal
can begin promptly at 7:30am in the BGHS gymnasium. All
graduates are required to attend. At rehearsal, graduates
will receive their tickets (assuming that financial obligations
have been met), and, if applicable, honors medallions and
stoles.
Can I get up to take pictures as my child walks across
the stage? Please remain seated throughout the entire
ceremony out of respect for other spectators. Students walk
across the stage quickly and we want every family member
and friend to have a clear view of their graduate. Official
pictures of each graduate are available for purchase through
GradImagesTM. Please do not stand or move to the main
floor to take pictures.
What time should graduates arrive for the graduation on
May 31? Graduates must report to the Fieldhouse no later
than 12:30pm on Sunday.
How many graduation tickets will my family get? What
if I need more tickets? Due to seating limitations in the
school gymnasium, each graduate will only receive 4
tickets. Tickets will be given to graduates during the
rehearsal provided they have met all financial obligations.
No additional or replacement tickets are available. Please
do not call the school to ask for more tickets
How long does the ceremony last? The entire ceremony
should take between 60-80 minutes.
Is there a dress code for the 2015 graduates? Yes. Please
refer to the Graduation website for specific requirements.
Are tickets also required to view the graduation ceremony
live on closed circuit television in the cafeteria or theater?
No tickets are required to watch graduation from the
cafeteria or theater. There is no limit to the number of guests
you may bring to view in these alternative locations.
Is there a reception in the school following the ceremony?
No. Families typically prefer private family celebrations
offsite. You are welcome to take pictures outside the school
and in the foyer before departing.

This notice is to inform and clarify information about the start
date for the new Meningococcal Vaccine Requirements.
House Bill 3190 was signed into law as Public Act 0980480 to become effective in January 1, 2014; however,
the new law allows that the requirement would not be
implemented until at least six months after the Department
established administrative rules for implementing the law.
It is anticipated the meningococcal requirement will be
implemented for the 2015-2016 school year.
In accordance with current requirements of Public Act
90-0607, the State Board of Health is required to conduct
three public hearings whenever there are any proposed
changes to the administrative rules regarding immunization
of children against vaccine preventable communicable
diseases. Given the timeframes for conducting the public
hearings during 2014, completing additional public comment
periods and administrative review periods, and ensuring a
period of a minimum of six months after the administrative
rules are adopted to notify schools, parents, and health
care providers of the new requirements, it is expected that
the meningococcal requirement will be implemented for the
2015-2016 school year.
The new law will require students, upon entering the
sixth and the twelfth grade of any public, private, or
parochial school, to receive an immunization containing
meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV4) in accordance
with the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control
Senior Activity Day
Practices (ACIP). The immunization requirement consists
of one dose of the MCV4 vaccine for 6th grade entrance
and 2 doses for 12th grade entrance, unless the first dose
was administered to a child who was 16 years of age or
older, in which case only one dose would be required at
12th grade entrance.
Seniors, Class of 2015, Mark your calendar!!
Senior Activity Day will be
Starting with our Senior Breakfast at 8:30!
The entire day will be dedicated to
Senior activities including breakfast, Senior Slide
Show, and the Senior Activity!
More details will be coming soon.
Even though the meningococcal
requirement will not go into effect
until the 2015 school year, we
encourage providers to vaccinate
against meningococcal according
to ACIP recommendations, which
are available at http://www.cdc.
gov/vaccines/hcp/acip-recs/vaccspecific/mening.html.
Please remember that according to federal
law and school board policy, there is to be

your cooperation.

Online Food Service Prepay
There is a biological basis to this process. Research has
shown that simply petting a dog can stimulate the release of
oxytocin, a hormone associated with bonding and affection
in both the dog and human. Oxytocin decreases levels of
cortisol, a stress hormone secreted when we are under
perceived physical or psychological stress. Petting a dog
can regulate breathing, lower blood pressure, decrease
symptoms of anxiety, and increase prosocial behaviors such
as trust and feelings of connectedness with other people.

Buffalo Grove High School
National Honor Society
Every year, parents and students ask questions about the
procedure our school uses for inducting new members into
the National Honor Society. This explanation of our process
should answer many questions and help assure that as
many students as possible can demonstrate that they are
worthy candidates for inclusion in that society.
In addition, each candidate will be asked to put together a
comprehensive résumé detailing leadership roles they have
held and community service they have performed during
their high school tenure. This portion of the application
for inclusion in N.H.S. All of the activities listed must
information need to be listed with each item. It is the job of
the applicant to provide detailed information in the areas of
leadership and service. If an item or reference is not listed,

that each inductee has shown all four of those qualities.

these two pillars. Finally, all applicants will be asked to write
several short essays explaining their commitment to the
four pillars of the National Honor Society and their vision
for the future.
Those candidates highly demonstrating all four qualities

on their academic achievement and inviting them to begin
the application and induction process for National Honor
Society. These letters are received in September and
sent to the student via their school email account and are
sent only to the student, not parents. Students will receive
packets with information regarding the application process
at a special mandatory meeting in mid-September. Please
note, the emailed letter is only to notify students that they
are eligible to apply for National Honor Society. If eligible
students are interested in applying, then they must attend
the mandatory application meeting as indicated in the
letter. Students who do not attend the mandatory meeting

seriously and festive enough so that the inductees feel they
went through a celebration.
If you have questions about the process, please contact
Mrs. Elizabeth Bennett, the N.H.S. faculty advisor, at 847718-4047 (email: [email protected]). Students
are encouraged to contact Mrs. Bennett with their questions

Attention all CURRENT
A reminder to all current National Honor Society members
that in order to remain in good standing with N.H.S. you must

you may be removed from the organization. Remember to
Once fully completed applications are turned in, a list of
eligible students is sent to the entire Buffalo Grove High
School faculty. Faculty members are asked to indicate to
the N.H.S. advisor, Elizabeth Bennett, if they are aware
of any students on the list whose character they question.
Faculty members are also invited to praise the character of
any student on the list based on personal and classroom
experiences. On a case-by-case basis, Mrs. Bennett follows
up on those individuals brought to her attention based on
cause for concern. When warranted, the advisor will seek
the advice of the faculty advisory committee and other listed
references on the N.H.S. application before a student is not
admitted into N.H.S. on the basis of character.

Drivers are prohibited from using a cell phone while driving unless using a hands-free device. This is in addition
to the prohibition against using any electronic device to compose, send, or read a cell phone text. A “hands
free” device would include headsets (bluetooth), hands-free systems (speaker phone), or voice operated
commands. The only exemptions would be for drivers reporting emergencies and drivers using electronic
devices while parked on the shoulder of a roadway. Fines for violating the law range from $75 to $150 per
license.
The law for those under 19 remains the same and they are prohibited from using a
cellular device or any type of hand-held communication device while operating a motor
vehicle.
Want to keep your license? Keep your hands free while driving!

STUDENT DRESS CODE
Buffalo Grove High School expects students to come to
school groomed and clothed in a modest and appropriate
manner that is not disruptive to the learning environment.
B.G.H.S. accepts and fully recognizes that the basic
responsibility for dress rests with the student and his/her
parents, but experience has demonstrated the need for
certain guidelines.
The Buffalo Grove High School Parent Association has
established a scholarship program to recognize and honor
well rounded students who have made the most of their high
school years. The number of scholarships awarded each
year and their amounts may vary due to the available funds
from the B.G.P.A. treasury and the number of applicants.
Awards Assembly in May.

Plan For A Productive Summer
If your teen wants to do more than "hang out" this summer,
it's time for him to start looking for work. Summer jobs are
great because they can:
• Become a top priority. Unlike during the school year, your
teen can put in extra hours if he'd like - and make extra
money.
• Focus on fun. For example, your teen could work at a
pool, camp, or amusement park.
SUMMER INTERNSHIPS
No job this summer? What about earning CREDIT instead
through a summer internship? For committed, punctual,
reliable students, District 214 provides a non-paying
summer internship program wherein students earn credit
while they experience hands-on learning and become more
knowledgeable in a career area of their choice. These
opportunities are for students entering either their JUNIOR
or SENIOR year, and the student must be available 20
hours a week for both summer semesters.
Not sure where to job hunt? Have him ask his guidance
counselor for suggestions.

to College: A Student's Guide to Getting the Most Out of
High School, ISBN: 0-87447-335-7 (College Board Publications,

The application is available on the D214.org website under
“Educational Services” or your students may pick one up
in the College Career Center (next to Student Services).
Application deadline is April 1, 2015.
Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work
a day in your life.

When a student needs the TEMPORARY use of an elevator key due to a medical condition, the student MUST
request an elevator key from Ms. Stacy Wodka, our school nurse, at 847-718-4171. Ms. Wodka will issue an
the elevator key on the due date. Failure to return the elevator key or if the key is lost, the deposit will be forfeited.
It is our hope that you will cooperate with us in as far as returning the elevator keys. Please keep in mind that
when keys are not returned, students or staff members who have medical conditions preventing them from using

SPRING MUSICAL
Summer Reading 2015 is almost upon us. We at Buffalo
Grove High School believe that learning is a year round
activity. Consequently, we encourage students to read
for pleasure both during the year and in the summer. The
intent of the reading requirement is to encourage students
to read, to help students understand that reading and
learning is a life-long experience, to expose students to
different cultures and beliefs, and to enhance their world
views. We know that many of the stories we read often
address issues and events taking place in the world beyond
our classrooms. World issues and events are reflected in
both the nonfiction our students may read and discuss
and can also be found in literature where a character is in
conflict with larger societal issues. Each year we seek ways
to connect our summer reading to significant issues. The
books for Summer Reading are always selected with the
intent to augment and enrich the course experiences for
which the book was chosen.
The Buffalo Grove High School Theater Arts Program
presents Avenue Q: School Edition.
Avenue Q: School Edition is a puppet-filled comedy that
follows a group of 20-somethings seeking their purpose in
big-city life. The laugh-out-loud musical tells the timeless
story of a recent college grad named Princeton who moves
into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue
Q. He soon discovers that although the residents seem
Together, Princeton and his new-found friends struggle
to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life.
Filled with gut-busting humor and a delightfully catchy
score, not to mention puppets, Avenue Q: School Edition is
a truly unique show that has quickly become a favorite for
audiences everywhere. Performances will be:
Furthermore, studies show that reading increases and
expands vocabulary, improves writing skills, and can
increase important critical thinking skills such as analysis,
synthesis, and evaluation. Students who read extensively
also tend to perform better in their classes and on
standardized tests. To that end, it is important that all of
our students read the required book for their level and
are prepared for the fall assessment that will take place in
English classes within the first two weeks of school.
