This holiday season is
usually a festive occasion
for families
with its gift
giving, parties
and decorations.
But for
one family, this is a time to mourn
the loss of a mother, a daughter
and sister.
Last August, Chantel
Rothmiller relocated to Charlotte,
North Carolina, to get a new start
on life and living for her daughter, 15, and son, 8.
On December 5th, she was
found dead at work on the first day
on her new job. She was 41.
“She did have some health
problems,” said her mother, Ms.
Annise Rothmiller, who added that
the cause of her daughter’s death
has not been determined.
However, Ms. Rothmiller says
her daughter recently underwent
surgery in which most of her small
intestines were removed.
Now, the family is faced with
a financial dilemma. Ms.
Rothmiller had no insurance.

home here in Philadelphia.

followed by services.

for each other.

crime and other problems, we pray
for a better new year. With God on

Christmas In The N’hood

This is the time of year when the whole
neighborhood opens up its heart to you.
Much of this community's good will
during this season of giving can be seen in
this issue of the Westside Weekly.
At top right, Officer Michael Davis
and our men and women in blue hosted a
Christmas party for some 140 children
from the Huey and Hamilton Schools at
the 18th Police District, 55th and Pine
Streets.
The children were entertained by a
magician, Mr. Fantasy, and a visit by Santa.
However, one officer doing his duty
mistakenly ticketed Santa's non-reindeer
sleigh.
But all is well since Captain Hugh
Lynch announced that he will have the
ticket rectified. The children cheered.
Then in the middle picture is our Councilwoman, Jannie Blackwell, who oversees one of the biggest holiday parties in
the city.
Several thousand children, many of
whom are homeless, were treated to a meal
and gifts at the city's Convention Center.
And, the picture below shows the one
place that greets strangers with the most
warm, hearty welcome. It's the 5800 Block
of Montrose Street.
In the spirit of Christmas - and the light
that guided the shepherds to the Christ
child - Montrose Street will dazzle your
eyes with its sparkling lights and pleasing
displays.
“We’ve been doing this for 15, 16
years,” said Ms. Josie Johnson, Montrose’s
block captain, who added that all but two
neighbors set up light displays.
It’s an example of neighborhood cooperation that has become a tradition that
no other block in the area has yet to match,
but should strive for.
Ms. Johnson said some 100 to 250
vehicles a night visit the street.
The cars are lined up on 58th Street
from here to as far as Baltimore Avenue,
she said.
Neighbors turn on the display at the
beginning of dusk around 4:30 PM and it
lasts until midnight.
However, on Christmas Eve and
Christmas, the displays will be shining for
24 hours each day. The lights are turned
off after New Years Day.
From now until Christmas Eve, Santa
will be handing out candy canes and stuffed
animals to children - 4 years and under starting at 6 PM til 9 PM.

Blue Horizon Preserving Philly’s Boxing Legacy

What’s a night in Philadelphia when you have some
of the professional fighters
that gave their all in the heyday of their boxing careers?
What is it like to reach
back into yesteryear and see
the great ones of the Philadelphia boxing scene being
honored and remembered for
their great accomplishments,
blood, sweat and tears?
It’s called preserving
Philadelphia’s Boxing History so that the fighters of
today can appreciate the history of those fighters who
represented the boxing capital of the world and their storied “Ring Wars”.
Last week, the Legendary Blue Horizon and it’s
CEO Ms. Vernoca Michael
announced that they will begin to preserve boxing history for Philadelphia fighters
during their Night of Legends which showcased Philly
fighters and world champions that fought at the Blue
Horizon.
“Well, for 15 years, I’ve
been interested in having a
museum here,” said Ms.
Michael. “Simply because
many of the younger fighters
did not know who fought here
prior to them coming. So, it’s
been my dream to be able to
kick this off. And we’re a
part of Preservation Alliance
and other organizations that
are definitely into developing museums here in the city.

She’s bringing the older fighters back to the Blue Horizon
so that they’ll still be there in
the public eye and bringing
them out of the closet like.”

have made a mark in the Blue
Horizon and in the Philadelphia area,” said former Middleweight Champ Buster Drayton
about the honor. “Also, this
right here can be handed down
to young guys coming up. I go
in gyms and I hand these young
guys things they’ve never seen
to enlighten them and maybe
they could be better than we
were.”

Philadelphians share while
watching fights at the world’s

“My Tribute To A Dear
Friend,
Linda Denise Gates”

Folks I would like to share
with you a tribute that I am
giving to my late dear friend,
Linda Denise Gates, who died
one year ago on December
18, 2008.
I
first met
Linda at
T h e
United
States
Federal
Government’s Defense Industrial Supply Center
(where I had began my federal government career) in
December 1980.
Linda was a caring, elegant, lovely lady who had a
quiet nature, along with a
beautiful personality.
Although she had a quiet
spirit, Linda was the ultimate
professional when it came to
performing her job.
Now, before I write another word, let tell me a little
more about Linda Denise
Gates.
Linda was born on February 7, 1955 in Birmingham,
Alabama, the daughter of the
late Rev. Richard L. Gates
and Mrs. Louise Gates. She
was raised in a family that
included her sister, Patricia
Osby and three brothers Richard L. Gates Jr., Joseph
Garcia Gates and Dale Gates.
Linda completed all of
her education in Jacksonville,
Florida., and when she graduated in 1973, she joined the
Army where she served four
and a half years being honorably discharged at he rank of
sergeant.
In 1977, when she became an employee of the federal government. She started
off as a mail clerk in The
Dept. of The Navy and
worked her way up to an Inventory Management Specialist Specialist for The Defense
Industrial Supply Center of
Philadelphia until her death.
My dear friend loved to
travel and take pictures of all
the different places that she
visited. There was a special
place in her heart for the
mountains and she was an
avid hiker, in addition to being a great outdoors woman.
Now folks, I can’t tell you
when I didn’t see Linda walking in the coldest weather in a
blazer and saying, “It’s feels
really good out here.” She

Conditions of Sheriff’s Sale for
JUDICIAL/FORECLOSURE SALE
Ten percent of the highest bid for each property auctioned off shall be deposited in cash,
certified check, attorney’s check or money
order with the Sheriff by each bidder when his
bid is registered, provided that in no case shall
less than Six Hundred Dollars ($600.00) be
deposited, otherwise upon failure or refusal to
make such deposit, the bidder shall lose all
benefit of his bid and the property may be
immediately offered again and sold unless a
second bid has been registered, then, the second highest bidder will take the property at the
highest bid price.
Additionally,
where there is active bidding, the highest
bidder, and the second highest bidder, if any
must post the entire amount of the cost of the
distribution policy for the property at the
time of sale by cash, certified check,
attorney’s check or money order with the
Sheriff.
The balance of the purchase money must be deposited in cash, certified check, attorney’s check or money order
together with a Deed poll for execution by the
highest bidder to the Sheriff at his office within
30 days from the time of the sale. An extension
of time for an additional 30 days may be
granted at the discretion of the Sheriff upon
receipt of written request from the buyer
requesting the same, except when a second
bidder has been duly registered. Also, if the
first bidder does not complete settlement with
the Sheriff within the thirty (30) day time limit
and a second bid was registered at the sale, the
second bidder shall be granted the same thirty
(30) day time limit to make settlement with the
Sheriff on his second bid. Thereafter, the Sheriff shall be at liberty to return the writ to court.
A second bid must be registered on any property immediately after it is sold. The second
bidder must present the same amount of deposit that the highest bidder delivers to the
Sheriff at the sale. An extension of time under
no circumstances will be granted or honored
by the Sheriff whenever a second bid is registered on a property at the sale.
The first bid or opening bid on each property
shall be a sum sufficient to pay all Sheriff’s
costs including advertising, all taxes, water
rents and municipal claims due to the City of
Philadelphia. If there is no other bid price
above the opening bid price, the property shall
be sold by the auctioneer to the attorney on the
writ at that price.
The deposit by any bidder who fails to comply
with the above conditions of sale shall be
forfeited and the funds will be applied to the
Sheriff’s cost, then to any municipal claims
that the City of Philadelphia has on the property. Finally, if a balance still remains, a
Sheriff’s Distribution Policy will be ordered
and the money will be distributed accordingly.
No personal checks, drafts or promises to pay
will be accepted in lieu of cash, certified
checks, attorney’s checks or money orders
made payable to the Sheriff of Philadelphia
County.
The Sheriff reserves the right to grant further
extensions of time to settle and further reserves the right to refuse bids from bidders
who have failed to enter deposits on their bids,
failed to make settlement, or make fraudulent
bids, or any other behavior which causes disruption of the Sheriff Sale. Said bidders shall be
so refused for the sale in which said behavior
occurred and for said further period of time as
the Sheriff in his discretion shall determine.
The Sheriff will not acknowledge a deed poll to
any individual or entity using an unregistered
fictitious name and may, at his discretion,
require proof of identity of the purchaser or
the registration of fictitious names. The bid of
an unregistered fictitious name shall be forfeited as if the bidder failed to meet the terms
of sale.
All bidders are advised to remain at the sale
until after the last property is sold. The Sheriff
reserves the right to re-sell any property at
any time before the end of the sale, upon the
successful bidders’ failure to tender the required deposit. The Sheriff reserves the right to
postpone or stay the sale of any property in
which the attorney on the writ has not appeared and is not present at the sale.
