The Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
August 16, 2015
Celebrating the Human Body…
Feast of the Assumption, August 15th
Our translation of the Pentecost sequence puts it this way: “Light
most blessed, shine on the hearts of your faithful – even in their
darkest corners; for without your aid we can do nothing good, and
everything is sinful.”
The Solemnity of the Assumption is the oldest and greatest feast
of Mary. Orthodox Christians call August 15, the Dormition
(“falling asleep”) of Mary.
Vows…
She who sheltered the Divine Word in her breast was to be lodged
in the dwelling place of her Son,” says Saint John Damascene,
describing his belief that after Mary’s death, her body was raised
to live with God forever. That Mary’s body – not just her soul –
is in God’s presence is a sign of the holiness of creation. The
human body is not evil – it is good. Death is not the end of
creation. It is the beginning of eternal life. In our day, when
violence can desecrate the human body, the sign of Mary’s
assumption gains new import.
For most people, the word vow conjures up the phrase “For
better, for worse, in sickness and health, till death do us part.”
Unlike a contract, which specifies exactly what is expected – I
will fix your roof by a certain date; you will pay me a certain
amount of money – a vow is an absolute commitment, a sign that
you have entered into a special kind of relationship called a
“covenant.” When a couple marries, each one vows to be faithful
to the other no matter what circumstances arise. The decision is
made. They have only to live by it. It sounds simple, but the
community of parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends
witnesses to the fact that it is not easy – but it is worth it.
The New Testament reading for this feast calls Jesus the firstfruits
of those who have died, to be followed by the harvest of all who
hope for him. As Mary, the model believer and sign of the
Church, is gathered in, we hope that we too will one day be part
of this harvest. We surround Mary’s statue at church and at home
with brilliant clusters of flowers, herbs, and fruits - -the first
harvest of our gardens.
When we celebrate the sacrament of baptism, we forsake all
others – Satan, his empty works, his empty promises – and
profess faith, that is, we commit ourselves to live in covenant
with one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, for now and for
always, no matter what comes. Saint Paul says that nothing can
separate us baptized from the love of Christ: not trial, distress,
persecution, hunger, nakedness or danger, not even death
(Romans 8: 37 -39). Being faithful is not always easy, but the
saints, martyrs and all the blessed ones who have gone before us
and the ones who walk among us attest that it is worth it. And we
know that God will always be faithful to the covenant, as
promised to Noah when God spread the first rainbow over the
earth and vowed never again would all be lost (Genesis 9: 14).
Oil…A Return to Baptismal Symbols
“You’re engine’s frozen up,” the guy in the overalls said.
“What do you mean, ’frozen’?” the kid exclaimed with a mixture
of surprise and sarcasm. “It’s 95 degrees out!”
The older guy answered patiently, “You’ve got a bad oil leak.
There’s nothing left to lubricate the engine. Without the oil, the
moving parts got too hot and they expanded. They couldn’t move
anymore. Your engine is all locked up, jammed up, frozen up.
This car isn’t going anywhere.”
At our baptism our parents made promises for us or we ourselves
promised that we would be like Christ and take on the persona of
Christ for the world. We would live the values of the Gospel and
we would, in fact, love our enemies, forgive 7 X 70 times, and we
would turn the other cheek. When we fail to live the promise, the
vows, we need to be reconciled and we need to return to the
baptismal font to be renewed once again to live those promises.
Remember that the next time you dip your hand into the
baptismal font coming into or leaving our church.
When we are baptized and confirmed, we are anointed on our
heads with Chrism, a fragrant oil. Monarchs and priests are also
anointed, as are altars and churches when they are consecrated for
their sacred purposes. Remember our liturgical customs emanate
from the Mediterranean culture where Olive trees were very
prevalent. Folks cooked with olive oil, poured it on wounds, and
put it on their skin for protection. Italy and Greece would literally
collapse without olive oil. In every case, the meaning of oil is the
same: We call upon the Holy Spirit to be present and active in
this person’s life, through this person’s ministry, and in this
sacred place. Oil is used because it is an ancient custom, a
sacramental sign that has many symbolic meanings. But perhaps
for us car-dependent folks the clearest meaning is this: Without
the Holy Spirit, we are all locked up, jammed up, and frozen up.
We won’t be going anywhere.
I have never lost my love to baptize and I love the use of oil in the
Catholic baptismal ceremony. The Church loves to use the things
of earth to help us touch and understand the things of heaven, to
help us make connections and find God. The use of oil, both the
Oil of Catechumens, which is a rite of exorcism protecting, as
much as humanly possible, this person from all harm, sin and evil
at the hands of the “evil one,” and Chrism, a symbol of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. At St. Peter we use the oil liberally,
too, especially the Chrism. It is not like Brylcreem where “a little
dab will do ya.” We love to literally pour the perfumed oil on the
head of the newly baptized so you can smell the anointment for
weeks and let it sink in. Fill this person, Lord, with the power
and the energy of your Holy Spirit!
“School bells ringing, children singing, it’s back to Robert
Hall again. Mother knows for better clothes, it’s back to
Robert Hall again!” I used to hate that little jingle during the
month of August when I was a kid in Chicago because I knew
that school was fast approaching and summer would end
soon. Well, those school bells will be ringing this Tuesday at
St. Peter School promptly at 8:00 in the morning. Here we go
again for the 152nd time at St. Peter…opening another school
year! May God bless this new school year of grace called
2015-2016 and may it be a rich time of learning and
discovering more of God’s creation and God’s presence in our
lives. May God’s fullest blessings be upon our teachers, our
parents and our students as we begin this new school year!
I’ll see you in church!

RCIA - RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS
RCIA SESSIONS BEGIN:
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13 at 10 AM in Ursuline Hall.
WHAT IS THE RCIA? RCIA is the Rite of Christian Initiation
of Adults, a process (often called a “journey of faith”) aimed at
welcoming others into our Catholic family through reflection on
the experiences of their lives, the messages of sacred Scripture,
and the teachings and doctrines of the Catholic Church.
American Heritage Girls will be holding registration for
this year's troop!
Who: All girls in the parish ages 5-18 years old.
When: Tues. Aug. 25th from 7-8 pm.
WHO TAKES THIS “FAITH JOURNEY”?
 An unbaptized person interested in learning about the
Catholic faith.
 Persons baptized in other Christian faiths, who are seeking to learn more about the Catholic Church and feel
God calling them to become Catholic.
 Catholics, who are baptized, but did not complete their
sacraments of initiation (Eucharist and Confirmation).
Where: St. Peter school gym.

PSR ENROLLMENT 2015-16!
Enrollment for 2015-16 is currently underway
online for parish families. Please access the
enrollment site through this link:
WHAT IF I AM NOT SURE I WANT TO BECOME
CATHOLIC BUT WANT TO LEARN ABOUT CATHOLIC
TEACHINGS AND PRACTICES? The RCIA journey respects
each participant’s faith experience and their individual faith development timetable. Those “inquiring” into the Catholic faith
meet with other inquirers, faith community members, and RICA
team members, at informal sessions. Friends and family members
are also welcome to attend.
http://stpkirkwood.psrenroll.com/Home.aspx
Non-parish families, please contact PSR Principal Mrs. Jan Hartmann prior to enrollment. Space is limited.
Special welcome to first grade families and new families!
For information contact Principal Jan Hartmann:
[email protected] 314-821-0460 Ex. 4208
WHAT DO YOU “STUDY”? RCIA is MORE ABOUT FAITH
“FORMATION” than information. Resource materials are provided, videos are used where applicable, but the “heart” of RCIA
is developing a relationship with Jesus and conversion. It is more
about how we change from behaviors and attitudes that are selfcentered, to actions and choices which come from forming a relationship with a compassionate and loving God and Savior.
NEED CONFIRMATION?
(INCOMING 8TH GRADERS ONLY!)
Confirmation preparation begins in early Fall of
2015 for Confirmation reception on Thursday, May
5, 2016. If you are a St. Peter Parish 8 th grader attending a private Catholic school, please contact Jan
Hartmann, Coordinator of Faith Formation, [email protected]. You will be added to the list of
Confirmation candidates. Students attending St. Peter School
and PSR will receive information through their programs.
WHAT DO YOU LEARN ABOUT IN RCIA SESSIONS?
Sessions include topics such as Jesus Christ, the Trinity, Sacred
Scripture and Tradition, the seven Sacraments, our Catholic
Mass, how we pray, the Church calendar, the Virgin Mary, moral
decision making and the Social Teachings of the Catholic Church.
HOW/WHERE DO I BEGIN THE RCIA PROCESS? You begin the process by contacting Linda Doyle at 314-822-1347 or at
[email protected].
CHILDCARE NEEDED FOR RCIA
RCIA is in need of an Adult or a High School Junior or Senior to

ST. GERARD COUPLES BRIDGE CLUB
The St. Gerard couples bridge club is now
forming for the 2015-2016 year. We play once
a month from September to May on the 2nd
Friday evening of the month. Each couple
hosts up to two times in their home. Any interested couple should call Steve or Geri
Baumgart at 314.599.2251 for information.
Did you miss out on tickets for Matthew Kelly?
It is likely that a few tickets will become available in October, as
some ticket holders may not be able to attend at the last minute. We are keeping a "wait list" of those who would be interested in purchasing one of these tickets. Call: Ursuline Hall
Office @ 314-822-1347, x3002.
We will need dozens of volunteers to warmly welcome the
Dynamic Catholic team and hundreds of guests to St. Peter
Parish. "Stay tuned" for more details!
Also, any couples interested in being added to our substitute list
should contact Geri Baumgart at [email protected].

“Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you!.”
1 Kings 19:7
Jesus knew that the stewardship journey would be difficult, so He
gave us the nourishment of the Eucharist. When we take time to
join our sacrifices with the sacrifice of the Mass, we find the
strength to give and joy in our giving.
